England National Cricket Selectors have named the following 16-man squad for the tour of New Zealand starting in March.

England Test squad

Joe Root (Yorkshire) captain
Moeen Ali (Worcestershire)
James Anderson (Lancashire)
Jonny Bairstow (Yorkshire)
Stuart Broad (Nottinghamshire)
Alastair Cook (Essex)
Mason Crane (Hampshire)
Ben Foakes (Surrey)
Liam Livingstone (Lancashire)
Dawid Malan (Middlesex)
Craig Overton (Somerset)
Ben Stokes (Durham)
Mark Stoneman (Surrey)
James Vince (Hampshire)
Chris Woakes (Warwickshire)
Mark Wood (Durham)

The 24-year-old Lancashire right-hand batsman Liam Livingstone has been included in the squad for the first time.

Commenting on the selection of Livingstone, National Selector James Whitaker, said:

“Liam has been a player that we have been impressed with for quite some time, having performed well in the county system with Lancashire and over the past couple of years with the England Lions.

“He is a very talented and tough cricketer who has the ideal qualities and character to be successful in the Test arena.

“During the recent Lions tour of Australia, he was a standout performer and showed a lot of maturity in his attitude and put in some strong performances. We are particularly impressed with the way he bats against spin and is equally adept against the seamers. Liam is also highly regarded at his county Lancashire and will captain the side in the Specsavers County Championship during the 2018 campaign.”

Selectors have also recalled Durham seamer Mark Wood, who returns to the Test squad for the first time since last year.

“After a frustrating period with injuries, Mark is now back to full fitness and is looking forward to being part of our Test plans. He will play a significant part in our forthcoming ODI tour of Australia and we will be paying close attention to his efforts over the next few weeks.”

Ben Stokes is included, though his involvement remains subject to any relevant legal or disciplinary developments in relation to the incident in Bristol in September. Should the ECB Board receive formal confirmation that Stokes has either been charged or that he will face no charges, they would convene within 48 hours to make a decision on his availability for the team at that stage.

From the recent Ashes Test squad, Yorkshire batsman Gary Ballance, Nottinghamshire seamer Jake Ball and Surrey all-rounder Tom Curran all miss out.

“All three players (Gary Ballance, Jake Ball, Tom Curran) have worked hard on the recent Ashes tour,” said Whitaker.

“Unfortunately, they miss out on selection for New Zealand. All three will return to county cricket and will be looking to start the season well with a view to staking their claim to get back into selection reckoning. They are talented players and I am sure their time will come again.”

James Vince AGAIN!!!

You always hear that playing the game makes you a more qualified pundit, broadcaster/commentator. Partial justification for why tv broadcast industry is almost exclusively ex players, who are usually painful to listen to.

But if the management thinks that a guy who averaged 30 in county cricket, then averaged 26 in Tests during his second term in the team over 5 Tests should be included for another series?

They don't understand basic maths or common sense.

They retained alot of the players that failed against Aus. Surprised that Moeen and Vince are there but why is Curran out. Ben Stokes has been bought in which is also unexpected.

Aside from the obvious, I'd have rested Moeen and Broad, dropped Craig Overton who's a trundler and should never have been in the squad.

Might as well try out some younger bowlers and given a performing county batsman a go.

Would liked to have seen Hameed selected. In NZ conditions this bowling attack is more suited.

Batting is still a problem. Vince has serious temperamental issues , Stoneman still has some work to do. Livingstone is untested but has potential.

Should be a good series.

Indeed, selctors have a lot to answer for. Vince doesn't have enough discipline outside off, he plays away from his body too much which is asking for trouble in NZ conditions where the ball is expected to swing.

4 make-or-break knocks coming up for Vince - if he finally gets that elusive first ton then he will be retained, otherwise he will be on the sidelines for quite some time.

I think this series will go 1-0 either way.

Poor Ballance. Didn't play. Sent home, though his test record is much better than that of Vince.

On a positive note, the English FM array should do much better in NZ.

How does Vince keep getting selected? He was mostly poor in the Ashes.

Also,is Liam Livingstone an opener?

Livingstone is middle order player.
Vince is gifted player but always nicks behind after scoring 20 or 30 runs.

A problem in English cricket is that the management doesn't want people to do jobs that the teams needs and instead don't want to hurt the confidence of players.

Last I checked, the players weren't in charge of which responsibilities they want.

Give the gloves to Foakes, force Root to bat at 3 so the rookies don't have to, and have Bairstow or Jimmy lead. Root can return to captaincy when he can start scoring the hundreds that the team desperately needs.

Bairstow will feel secure without gloves if he captains, and the physical exertion of being in the field will dramatically be reduced for him, so he has the energy for longer innings at 4.

I almost never hope that a team I support has players who don't perform, but in Vince's case, I don't want him to score a hundred and get even two more series on that basis.

Vince is the English Umar Akmal so has the "talented" tag.

Also the coach prioritises AGGRESSIVE players no matter how many times they nick off after making a start they should convert.

Due to his talent lol. He has the strokes. It's his mental game which seems to be the problem.

If he doesn't score in this series, he'll be dropped for the Pakistan series.

They should play Malan at #3, Bairstow at #5, Stokes at #6 and Moeen at #7. Have three frontline pacers in Anderson, Broad and Woakes + Stokes as back-up. Which then gives them the ability to play Crane as the specialist spinner + Ali as back-up.

Four seamers should only be played against the Asian teams.

^ However, I really hope they only figure out that this is their best team AFTER Pakistan beat them. Would love to see Stoneman, Vince and an over the hill Cook face up to Amir and Hassan in a couple of months.

England National Cricket Selectors have named the following 15-man squad for the five-match ODI series against New Zealand.

Ben Stokes's involvement is subject to any court obligations in relation to the incident in Bristol in September and his travel arrangements are yet to be confirmed.

Chairman of Selectors James Whitaker, said:

“On behalf of the England Selectors I'd like to congratulate head coach Trevor Bayliss and captain Eoin Morgan on their victory in the Gillette ODI series over Australia.

"Our ODI side has made excellent progress over the last three years and it's encouraging to see with the 2019 World Cup on the horizon.

"We're sure to encounter strong opposition in New Zealand but it's another opportunity for the team to test themselves and to continue playing entertaining cricket.

“I would like to wish everyone involved in the squad the best of luck."

Poms LO squad is very settled. They are clear on what there combination is and there turn around since last WC has been amazing.

England have called up Craig Overton to replace the injured Liam Plunkett for the one-day international series against New Zealand.

Yorkshire bowler Plunkett was ruled out with a hamstring injury suffered in last Tuesday's T20 defeat to New Zealand and will miss the five-match ODI series against the Black Caps.

Overton made his Test debut during the Ashes series defeat in Australia, but fractured his rib in the third Test at the WACA in December.

However, the 23-year-old has now made a full recovery and joins all-rounder Ben Stokes in the squad.

Stokes has not played for England since September but following an appearance in court on a charge of affray, which he denies, is available to make his England return against the Black Caps in Hamilton on February 25.

However, England coach Trevor Bayliss says Stokes will need to be assessed closely this week before a decision is made on whether to pick him for Sunday's opening game of the series.

"Ben has fitted right back in and it only seems like yesterday that he went away," said Bayliss. "It will take a while for him to get up to speed and we will have to make a decision [based on] nets.

"I think [the first ODI] might be a bit early for him - and as we won our last series 4-1 [against Australia] there might not be a spot for him!

"We are just going to have to play it by ear."

This will be an interesting series. The ODI series especially will be very entertaining. The smaller boundaries and batsman from both sides will try to score big.

Poor Ballance. Didn't play. Sent home, though his test record is much better than that of Vince.

Just as rubbish as vince to be honest and should never be selected again.

The way both kiwis at home and england are so aggressive in ODIs and such small grounds i can see some 400+ totals being score in some ODI game. Hopefully this series will be as exciting as last ODI series played between the two sides (played in england).

I think England will win the ODI series. The test series should be competitive as NZ are always strong at home and England batting line up being vulnerable.

Sodhi named in ODI squad

Ish Sodhi will be part of an extended 14-man squad for the BLACKCAPS opening two ODIs against England in Hamilton and Mount Maunganui.

The BLACKCAPS have added the third spin option to an otherwise unchanged squad from the one that took on Pakistan last month. Sodhi comes in with good form, while also considering both Mitchell Santner and Todd Astle have missed games though injury recently.

BLACKCAPS ODI squad

Kane Williamson (c) - Northern Districts
Todd Astle - Canterbury
Trent Boult - Northern Districts
Lockie Ferguson - Auckland
Colin de Grandhomme - Auckland
Martin Guptill - Auckland
Matt Henry - Canterbury
Tom Latham - Canterbury
Colin Munro - Auckland
Henry Nicholls - Canterbury
Mitchell Santner - Northern Districts
Ish Sodhi – Northern Districts
Tim Southee - Northern Districts
Ross Taylor - Central Districts

BLACKCAPS Setector Gavin Larsen said the ODI team had been settled so far this summer.

“Both Mitchell and Todd have had injury concerns recently, so having Ish travel with us gives further options in the spin department,” said Larsen.

“Having won the previous eight matches, we’ve been able to keep good consistency in selection with our ODI squad.

“We still have a number of guys pushing their case in domestic cricket and that’s pleasing, but this is the squad for the first two matches of the series."

The BLACKCAPS head to Hamilton today ahead of their first match on Sunday at Seddon Park.

Ashes pressure off of Joe now... expecting him to kill it this series

New Zealand cricket captain Kane Williamson is nursing a hamstring injury ahead of the second one-day international against England tomorrow in his home town of Tauranga.

Mark Chapman has been brought into the squad as cover, with Tim Southee set to lead if Williamson is deemed unfit to play.

Coach Mike Hesson described the injury as "mild" and said Williamson would have to prove his fitness to "make sure he's 100 per cent ready to go".

Hesson surmised part of the problem had been that the ground was "quite soft" during the first ODI of the series at Hamilton's Seddon Park.

"The guys found it heavy on the legs, so you can get the odd niggle.

"It's a big blow … but you've got to have confidence in the squad.

"Throughout the year we've been able to put in performances without Kane, so that won't be an excuse. He's a world-class player and quality leader, but our side's got to be good enough to cope."

Hesson said Central Districts' George Worker had been the first player considered as a replacement, but ruled himself out after standing on a ball during the Ford Trophy final at New Plymouth on the weekend.

Southee was considered the best option as stand-in skipper, despite Tom Latham leading the team during the Ireland-Bangladesh tri-series last May.

Southee and Williamson were involved in the Indian Premier League at the time.

"Tom's got plenty on his plate at the moment, keeping and changing to batting in the middle order," Hesson said.

"Tim obviously did it [the captaincy] in the T20s earlier this summer, and did a good job."
Chapman's List A form had propelled him into the selection mix.

His Ford Trophy average of 80 was the highest for any player who batted more than three times. He had a strike rate of 103 from eight innings and was the only batsman to score two centuries during the tournament.

Chapman also helped guide Auckland to victory in the final against CD at Pukekura Park, scoring 47 from 36 balls and taking his best 50-over figures - three for 41 from eight overs of left-arm orthodox spin.

BLACKCAPS injury updates

Ross Taylor update

The precautionary scan on Taylor's quadricep showed no serious damage, though he will still be required to undergo further assessment at the BLACKCAPS training session tomorrow. His availability for Saturday’s third ODI against England is yet to be determined.

Kane Williamson update

Williamson will be further assessed at BLACKCAPS training tomorrow. His availability for Saturday’s match is also yet to be determined.

Mark Chapman will remain with the squad as cover.

Watling returns for historic Test series

Wicketkeeper BJ Watling has returned to the BLACKCAPS Test side for their two match series against England, which will see New Zealand host its first Day-Night Test.

Watling missed the series against West Indies earlier this season due to a hip injury. He’ll attend a training camp in Tauranga this week, as the BLACKCAPS prepare for the first Test at Eden Park starting 22 March.

A 12 man squad had been named initially, with Mitchell Santner ruled out for the series with a knee injury. Another release will be sent about this injury at approximately 7am this morning.

The second Test and final match of the home summer begins March 30 at Hagley Oval in Christchurch.

BLACKCAPS Selector Gavin Larsen said it was a boost to the side to have Watling available again.

“BJ is a proven performer at Test level for us and brings a lot to the group both on and off the field,” said Larsen.

“We’ve monitored BJ’s progress over the past few months and it’s great to see him back with the gloves for Northern Districts. Tom Blundell did a great job in BJ’s absence and we’ll keep working with him going forward."

Larsen added that having someone of Astle’s quality coming in helped lessen the blow of Santner’s injury.

“Having another spin bowling allrounder in Todd is of real benefit for us and he’ll be looking forward to his opportunity.

“Being involved in the first Day-Night Test in New Zealand is really exciting and there’s always something special about playing England. They have match winners throughout their squad so we expect a challenging series."

The BLACKCAPS players not involved in the warm-ups will head to Tauranga for a camp on Thursday.

Another fantastic series ahead.

Santner to undergo surgery | Changes to New Zealand XI side

Mitchell Santner has been ruled out of cricket for six to nine months with a knee injury.

Santner experienced discomfort in his right knee in the recent short format series against England and Australia and a scan at the time showed a bone defect.

A further scan in recent days has shown that the defect had deteriorated further and will require surgery to be fixed. Santner will be operated on later this week, before beginning an extensive rehabilitation.

BLACKCAPS Coach Mike Hesson said it was tough news for Santner.

“On a personal level everyone feels for Mitchell. He’s a popular guy in the changing room and he’s well respected for the work he puts in for the side,” said Hesson.

"Mitchell is a key player in all three formats for us, so we’ll certainly miss him in the upcoming series. It’s important though that he gets this fixed and we have him back for what is a big next 18 months for us.”

There have been a number of changes to the New Zealand XI sides to face England in a pair of two day matches against England in Hamilton.

Central Stags spinner Ajaz Patel has been added to the side for both matches and Martin Guptill will now be involved in both matches.

Ish Sodhi will no longer play in Hamilton and will instead return to the Plunket Shield, while George Worker has been ruled out with a hamstring injury. Ross Taylor will also not play the second match, but is expected to be available for the first Test.

Mason Crane has a stress fracture in his lower back and will return home early from England’s ongoing tour of New Zealand. Jack Leach, the left-arm spinner, will take Crane’s place in the touring party.

Crane, the 20-year-old leg-spinner, has played just the one Test, against Australia in Sydney earlier this year when he returned 1/193 from 48 overs as Australia won by an innings and 123 runs. He was picked in the first two-day tour match against New Zealand XI earlier this week but bowled just the one over, a maiden.

He underwent scans after the game, which revealed a partial stress fracture.

Leach, the 26-year-old Somerset man, has received his first senior England call-up as a result and will reach Auckland in time for the first of two Tests, starting on March 22.

One of the stalwarts in the English domestic circuit in recent times, Leach has picked up 116 wickets in the last two County Championship seasons, the best by a spinner in the competition, and has a total of 185 wickets from 54 first-class matches.

Leach and Crane were both part of the recent England Lions tour of the Caribbean, where Crane had a largely unsuccessful time, picking up just one first-class wicket. Leach, meanwhile, carried forward his strong domestic form, and even claimed the best first-class match figures by an England Lions spinner when he took 8/110 against Windies A in Jamaica, topping Graeme Swann's 8/156 against Zimbabwe in 1999.

NZC MEDIA RELEASE

Guptill added to BLACKCAPS Test squad

Batsman Martin Guptill has been added to the BLACKCAPS Test side to complete the squad of 13 ahead of the first Test against England on Thursday.

BLACKCAPS Selector Gavin Larsen said Guptill gave the squad more depth, while also providing an update on Ross Taylor.

“We opted for extra batting cover for that final spot and with Martin having been playing in the middle-order recently, he can cover a number of positions for us,” said Larsen.

“Ross is progressing nicely and is expected to take a full part in training tomorrow. The team are looking forward to what will be a special match beginning on Thursday."

The match will be New Zealand’s first Day-Night Test, with the first ball scheduled for 2pm on Thursday.

New Zealand received a boost on Wednesday (March 21), the eve of the first Test against England at Auckland’s Eden Park, with confirmation that Ross Taylor, the star batsman and former captain, is fit to play.

Taylor, who has a Test average of 48.04, had been battling a groin injury and a stomach bug but Kane Williamson, the captain, said he had completed a full training session without problem.

“He’s good to go, so that’s great news for us,” Williamson said. “Roscoe has played beautifully every time he’s walked out to the crease, the calmness at the crease, the confidence.

“It’s reflected in how much success he’s had this year. It’s important for us as a team that he’s there.”
The clash will be the ninth day-night Test and the first to be played in New Zealand.
Williamson described it as a “slightly unique and an exciting opportunity”, but did not want to over-think the possible pitfalls of heading into the unknown.

“There is probably a danger of over-complicating some of the finer parts of the pink-ball game,” he said, pointing to variable characteristics at different stages of the ball, times of day and in different climates.

“There’s definitely some unknowns. There’s a lot of talk about the evening session and the condition of the ball in that time.
“There’s heaps of different stats but there’s still unknowns. The sample size of pink-ball cricket is fairly small but it’s important that you adapt as a change of conditions may happen coming into different stages of the day.”

New Zealand are likely to make two changes from their last Test, against Windies.

Williamson said Todd Astle would replace Mitchell Santner as the spinner in the side and BJ Watling would return as wicketkeeper.

Watling has recovered from the hip injury which sidelined him from the Windies Tests in December.

New Zealand have played one day-night Test when they lost the inaugural match under lights against Australia in 2015.
England have played twice with the pink ball, winning at home against Windies last August and losing to Australia at the Adelaide Oval in early December.

Moeen Ali's 50th test match coming up. What an impactful player he has been for England. Some were saying he wouldn't survive past the last Ashes series in Englnd and he's done much more than that.

Hope he plays 50 more.

Astle ruled out of Test | Sodhi called into squad

Todd Astle has been ruled out of the BLACKCAPS final Test of the summer against England after suffering a side-strain in the opening encounter at Eden Park.

The 31-year-old was injured while bowling and a subsequent scan confirmed he would not be ready for the Test at Hagley beginning on Friday.

BLACKCAPS Coach Mike Hesson said it was a piece of unfortunate timing for Astle.

“Through some incredibly hard work, Todd’s already overcome some injuries this summer, so for this to happen now is a cruel blow,” said Hesson.

“Todd played a major role in helping us win the game at Eden Park, so it’s disappointing for Todd and the team that he’s forced to the sideline ahead of Friday.”

Ish Sodhi, who took career best figures of 12-62 for Northern Districts in the most recent round of the Plunket Shield, will join the squad as Astle’s replacement in Christchurch today.

Yeah, just noticed. Overton will play then. Batting will be thin. Where are England's upcoming bustling fast bowlers ? Newcomers aren't that pacy, be it the Overtons or the Currans.

So that means leach will debut.
Final chance for lord vince to show off his elegance.
