England tour of South Africa 2019/2020 Thread

If Root misses a big Test Match and England do well / win, it could be a blessing in disguise and good for us in the long run.

England fans can rarely agree on anything, but one proposition that I am finding strong (albeit not universal) agreement upon at the moment is that most of us would like Root to step down from the captaincy and concentrate purely on his batting.

+1

apparently archer will miss out for wood.
and woakes will replace curran.

don't think that's a good idea, curran has proven himself with the ball and should open the bowling instead of woakes.

wood and archer have to bowl in tandem. this is the only oppurtunity to bowl both in the same match, next time this can happen is only during the ashes 2 years later in australia

I read that Wood is going to play, opening with Broad, and that Curran is fine so Archer (not fully fit) and Woakes miss out.

hate watching matches when teams miss their best players. Makes the win less credible.

Test matches are boringgggggg unless they go to the fifth day and the chasing team wins while chasing a huge target 9/10 matches finish in 3 days with the match being one sided

really? me I absolutely enjoy watching brutal bouncers. I love that stuff. Especially when bowlers can take batsmen out of the game or just make them bleed. test cricket is the best. Most brutal carnal form of cricket.

I like it when batsmen smash bouncers all over the park too. That's pretty awesome.
I love the amount of variations utilized by top bowlers.

agreed. love it when teams chase down a second innings total. I love those closely fought games.

Makes sense. South Africa can’t just keep sending out the same XI to get walloped by England. Might as well try out some new talent - it may or may not change the result, but at least they will be looking to the future.

CRICKET SOUTH AFRICA (CSA) and the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) have agreed that the two one-day matches at Paarl ahead of the Momentum One-Day International Series between England and the SA Invitation XI will be played as friendly matches, not being List A, to allow for full squad participation for the touring side.

CSA name De Kock as Proteas ODI captain & announce ODI squad to play England

Tuesday, 21 January 2020

Cricket South Africa (CSA) is pleased to name Quinton de Kock as the new Standard Bank Proteas One-Day International captain.

He made his international debut in December 2012 after an impressive showing at that year’s ICC U19 Cricket World Cup in Australia and was called up into the ODI squad just a short month later.

The 27-year-old wicket-keeper batsman boasts 115 ODI caps with 4 907 runs. An exciting talent from the beginning, De Kock has been one of South Africa’s standout and most consistent batsmen for several seasons with an ODI average of 45.01, 14 centuries, 24 half-centuries and a high score of 178 (off 113 balls, 16x4, 11x6s) which he made against Australia at SuperSport Park in September 2016.

CSA Acting Director of Cricket Graeme Smith commented;

“We all know the quality of the player that Quinton de Kock has grown to become. Over the years, we have watched him grow in confidence and become one of the top ODI wicket-keeper batsmen in the world. He has a unique outlook and manner in which he goes about his business and is tactically very street smart. We are confident that the new leadership role will bring out the best in him as a cricketer and that he can take the team forward into the future and produce results that South Africans the world over can be very proud of. We wish him the very best in this new role and look forward to watching him make his mark in this series against the World Cup Champions.”

With two weeks to go until the start of the ODI series against the reigning ICC World Cup Champions, CSA is delighted to also announce the following players who will make up the 15-man squad:

Quinton de Kock (captain, Momentum Multiply Titans), Reeza Hendricks (Imperial Lions), Temba Bavuma (Imperial Lions), Rassie van der Dussen (Imperial Lions), David Miller (Hollywoodbets Dolphins), Jon Jon Smuts (Warriors), Andile Phehlukwayo (Hollywoodbets Dolphins), Lutho Sipamla (Warriors), Lungi Ngidi (Momentum Multiply Titans), Tabraiz Shamsi (Momentum Multiply Titans), Sisanda Magala (Warriors), Bjorn Fortuin (Imperial Lions), Beuran Hendricks (Imperial Lions), Janneman Malan (World Sports Betting Cape Cobras), Kyle Verreynne (World Sports Betting Cape Cobras).

It is a young and exciting squad that boasts the cream of the South African domestic set-up’s crop. It is with great pride that the selectors have identified five players who are receiving an ODI call-up for the very first time, they are; Lutho Sipamla, Sisanda Magala, Bjorn Fortuin, Janneman Malan and Kyle Verreynne. CSA endeavours to reward consistently good performances and saw this series as an opportunity to reward youngsters who have excelled in the domestic structures for some time, while giving senior members of the Proteas team a rest in the heavily scheduled international season that faces them.

Four of the named players’ selection is dependent on their passing a fitness test as they work in the CSA Centre of Excellence in Pretoria to be match ready by the time the team meets in Cape Town on 31 January. Those players are Lungi Ngidi (who is making a comeback from injury), Sisanda Magala, Tabraiz Shamsi and Jon Jon Smuts.

CSA Independent Selector Linda Zondi said;

“We are really pleased with the squad we have selected, it is a good indication of the depth that we have in the country. The road towards the 2023 Cricket World Cup starts now and we want players doing well in our domestic structures to see the rewards of the hard work that they have put in. The pool that we build going forward is going to be vital in the selection of that 2023 World Cup squad but also without looking too far ahead, we are confident that we have players that will make South Africa proud in this ODI series against a confident England team.”

Mr Zondi will be available for interviews over the phone for the remainder of the day until 18:00 on +27 71 869 7510.

England captain Joe Root says Jofra Archer "is a big part of our dressing room" after Kevin Pietersen questioned the pace bowler's treatment.

Archer, 24, played in the first-Test defeat by South Africa but missed the next two Tests, which England won.

Ex-England batsman Pietersen said in a newspaper interview: "Archer is copping it at the moment, and probably because he's from the Caribbean."

"He [Archer] is desperate to do well in Test cricket," said Root.

"He's desperate to learn and to develop. He loves the game and he loves the environment.

"We want to keep making sure that that's a place he wants to keep being involved in."

England in South Africa: Jofra Archer on track for fourth Test return
Barbados-born Archer took six wickets - including 5-102 in the second innings - in the opening Test of the series and, after missing the last two, could return from an elbow injury for the fourth and final Test in Johannesburg.

"It's been a very frustrating tour for him for a number of reasons with his injury," added Root.

"Also, someone at the start of his career coming to South Africa and taking a five-for and having to miss out on the next couple of games, is never an easy thing to take as a young player.

"There have been a number of learnings for him so far on this tour.

"We are very keen on making sure that we try to get the best out of Jofra - keep creating an environment where he can learn, develop and not stand still as a player and keep growing in Test cricket."

Archer could play in the fourth Test along with fellow pace bowler Mark Wood as Root considers his starting line-up.

"It would be nice to see how they go together," said Root.

"I think they would be a relentless barrage of pace which is exciting, especially on a surface such as you typically get here at the Wanderers."

Root's proudest moment?
Root captained England to a series win in Sri Lanka in 2018 but believes winning in South Africa would be his proudest moment as his country's captain.

"I think it probably would be, yes, because of the different things we've had to manage throughout this tour," said Root.

"It would be a very big achievement for this group.

"It's been a tour that has thrown everything at us and I think collectively as a squad, not just the players but the coaching staff, have worked tirelessly to make sure we stayed calm and as much in control as we can."

CSA NAME SA INVITATION XI SQUAD TO PLAY ENGLAND

Tuesday, 28 January 2020

Cricket South Africa (CSA) today named the SA Invitation XI squad to play England in two one-day tour matches at Eurolux Boland Park, Paarl, on Friday and Saturday of this week.

The team consists of senior provincial players as franchise players are involved in Momentum One-Day Cup matches which start this weekend.

The Momentum One-Day International Series between England and the Standard Bank Proteas starts at Newlands next Tuesday, February 4.

SA Invitation XI squad: Jacques Snyman (Northern Cape), Sizwe Masondo (Easterns), Kabelo Sekhukhune (Easterns), Jean du Plessis (SWD), Qaasim Adams (WP), Jesse Christensen (WP), Beyers Swanepoel (Northern Cape), Garnett Tarr (Northern Cape), Andile Mokgakane (KZN), Imraan Manack (Easterns), Smangaliso Nhlebela (KZN), Stefan Tait (SWD), Justin Dill (WP).

England fast bowler Jofra Archer has been ruled out of the three-match IT20 series against South Africa starting next month.

Archer returned to the UK on Tuesday evening and will focus his time on getting fit after sustaining soreness to his right elbow, which forced him out of the last three Tests against the Proteas.

The right-arm quick managed one appearance on the red-ball leg of the tour where he took five wickets in the opening Test of the four-match series at Supersport Park, which England won 3-1 this week in Johannesburg.

He will be replaced in the squad by Lancashire seamer Saqib Mahmood, who will remain in South Africa after the three-match ODI series.

I am not interested in the T20s. Roll on the SL tests!

The Standard Bank Proteas One-Day International (ODI) team will assemble in Cape Town this weekend to begin preparation for the three-match Momentum ODI series against England from 04-09 February 2020.

The squad sees several new faces such as Lutho Sipamla, Kyle Verreynne and Bjorn Fortuin who have lit up the local limited overs domestic leagues throughout the past season and impressed selectors enough to give them a chance against the reigning World Champions. Their inclusion will serve as an opportunity to see the value they can bring as the team begins its building blocks towards the 2023 ICC World Cup, while also giving senior players such as Faf du Plessis and Kagiso Rabada much needed rest after a very busy 12 months of cricket.

“It’s an exciting group of youngsters that the selectors have picked and it’s a clear sign to everyone that if you put in the hard yards consistently enough, it will pay off eventually,” said newly appointed Captain Quinton de Kock.

“We’re excited to take on a team like England who have had a really good season. It’s a good way of measuring ourselves against the current ODI world champions and the right kind of challenge for everyone from the new guys to the senior players. It’s going be a good, quick and tough series and I’m looking forward to it.”

The team boasts a fully fit squad with the exception of Sisanda Magala. While the seamer has shown impressive signs of improvement since his enrolment into a high performance training and conditioning camp which also included Tabraiz Shamsi, Jon-Jon Smuts and Lungi Ngidi, he has not met the team’s requirements for the ODI series. He will, however, join the Proteas camp for the duration of the series and continue to work with the team’s strength and conditioning coach, Tumi Masekela, with the aim of being match-ready for selection for the T20 international series from 12-16 February.

“I’m proud of the work that’s been achieved by the four players who have been in our high performance camp for the last three weeks,” commented Cricket South Africa interim Director of Cricket, Graeme Smith.

“It’s been a tough assignment and the guys have really put in the work with the ambition to get into the green and gold in mind, that’s the kind of commitment and grit we’re looking for in our national team. I’m pleased that Lungi, Tabraiz and Jon-Jon have been declared fully fit to join the ODI squad and I’m confident that Sisanda will be in that circle soon enough. He has put in an immense amount of work over a short period of time and we want to ensure he has the tools to deal with the high demands of international cricket when the opportunity arises. The Proteas men have an incredibly busy year of limited overs cricket ahead of them and we want to be certain that our players are up for the demands that will come.”

Proteas ODI squad update

South Africa seamer Lungi Ngidi, spinner Tabraiz Shamsi and all-rounder Jon-Jon Smuts are back in contention for the one-day international series against England, which begins on 4 February.

All three players have passed their fitness tests at CSA's strength and conditioning camp. Sisanda Magala, who was also at the camp and named in the ODI squad, has not yet met the fitness requirements and will continue to work with fitness trainer Tumi Masekela, targeting the three-match Twenty20 International series that takes place after the ODIs.

"I'm proud of the work that's been achieved by the four players who have been in our high-performance camp for the last three weeks," said Graeme Smith, the Cricket South Africa interim Director of Cricket.

"I'm pleased that Lungi, Tabraiz and Jon-Jon have been declared fully fit to join the ODI squad and I'm confident that Sisanda will be in that circle soon enough. He has put in an immense amount of work over a short period of time and we want to ensure he has the tools to deal with the high demands of international cricket when the opportunity arises.

"The Proteas men have an incredibly busy year of limited-overs cricket ahead of them and we want to be certain that our players are up for the demands that will come."

Ngidi will return to the Proteas side for the first time since December. He last played competitive cricket when he featured in the Mzansi Super League in early December, where he injured his hamstring. Hence, he was not available for the Test series against England, which South Africa lost 1-3.

Smuts, who was withdrawn from the T20Is against India in September 2019, has passed all the fitness requirements. Shamsi has also been declared fit and will be vying for a spot in the team along with fellow spinners Smut and the uncapped Bjorn Fortuin.

Along with Fortuin, the Proteas squad also includes newcomers Lutho Sipamla and Kyle Verreynne and new ODI captain Quinton de Kock is excited at the prospect of mentoring a young side.

It's going be a good, quick and tough series and I'm looking forward to it.

Hard-hitting batsman David Miller has backed the new-look South Africa one-day international squad to banish the memories of a disastrous World Cup campaign last year, ahead of a three-match home series with England starting at Newlands on Tuesday.

South Africa won only three of their nine matches at the global finals last year as England went on to be crowned world champions on home soil, and at the start of a new cycle ahead of the 2023 finals have refreshed their squad.

Batsmen Janneman Malan and JJ Smuts, wicketkeeper Kyle Verreynne, spinning allrounder Bjorn Fortuin and seam bowler Lutho Sipamla are all fresh faces that will be led for the first time by captain Quinton de Kock.

"It’s exciting," Miller told reporters. "It is not the normal squad everyone is used to seeing. From my side that is refreshing, it’s a new start.

"The guys that have come in must learn as quickly as possible. We are here to win, not to just see how things go.

"It's an exciting time to be in South African cricket. The guys have got a lot of energy and are willing to learn."

Miller has also welcomed the appointment of De Kock, who takes over from Faf du Plessis, the latter having been rested for the series along with fast bowler Kagiso Rabada.

"Quinny and I have come a long way. He is an unbelievable performer and thinks about things very simply.

"But I genuinely believe as he has got older, he has got a great feel on the ground during the game. A great understanding of what is going on and what to do."

Miller hopes the selectors will back the squad that has been chosen beyond this series and give the players a fair run.

"It is about trying to find the best combination as early as possible and sticking with that. It is about doing the business on the park. It is about putting scores together as a batting unit.

"We are playing the world champions, but everybody is beatable. If we come with the right mindset it will be a really good series."

South Africa Invitational XI v England, second warm-up, Paarl

England 346-7 (50.0 overs): Bairstow 100, Root 91 Denly 85; Tait 4-56
SA Invitation XI 193-6 (30.0 overs): Snyman 67, Parkinson 3-9
South Africa Invitation XI won by four wickets

Jonny Bairstow scored a century and Test captain Joe Root 91 in England's final warm-up match before the one-day series against South Africa.

England made 346-7 in 50 overs against a South Africa Invitation XI in Paarl.

Because of power cuts, the hosts batted for 20 overs and were then set 85 from 10 overs to test England's bowlers - a target they reached with two balls to spare.

The three-match ODI series starts in Cape Town on Tuesday.

It will be England's first 50-over international since winning the World Cup for the first time in July last year.

After England won the toss, Bairstow reached 100 off 83 balls before retiring out, while Root faced 89 deliveries before he was bowled by Stephan Tait.

Joe Denly contributed 85 then took two wickets, while Matt Parkinson took three in an over. Jacques Snyman scored 22 off Saqib Mahmood's final over.

South Africa vs England | 2nd ODI | Durban | 7th February, 2020 | Match thread

After winning the opening ODI in Cape Town, a resurgent South Africa will be looking to seal the three-match series when they meet England in Durban for the second game on Friday, 7 February.

Overview

South Africa v England, 2nd ODI
Kingsmead, Durban
Friday, 7 February; 1.00 pm local, 11.00 GMT

South Africa, under the new leadership of Quinton de Kock, ticked all the boxes to return to winning ways after their 3-1 Test series drubbing against England. De Kock played a match-winning knock along with Temba Bavuma for company. Spinner Tabraiz Shamsi picked up the most wickets for his side, while others too chipped in to contain the England batsmen.

Debutants JJ Smuts and Lutho Sipamla gave a fair account of themselves, and could get another chance to show what they can do.

England's debutants, meanwhile, had a tougher outing. Skipper Eoin Morgan rued his bowlers' inability to create pressure on the well-set Kock and Bavuma, and Matt Parkinson, the leg-spinner playing his first series, will want to show what he is capable of.

Remember the last time

England posted a par score of 258/8 after they were asked to bat, thanks to Joe Denly's 87 and a 42-ball 40 from No.8 Chris Woakes. Shamsi was the pick of the bowlers for the hosts, returning 3/38 from his 10 overs. South Africa chased down the target in 47.4 overs. De Kock played a captain's knock, scoring a brilliant 107 from 113 balls, while Bavuma's innings was as praiseworthy for his 98 runs off 103. The duo shared a match-defining stand of 173 for the second wicket.

What they said

Chris Woakes, England paceman: "If we took wickets at important times, we could have put some pressure on them. That partnership between Temba and Quinton was pretty good and hard to break, and that won them the game."

Quinton de Kock, South Africa captain: "It's only one game (speaking of captaincy), we'll see how it goes in the near future. Hopefully, it keeps on being good for me. I enjoyed it. It kept me in the game specially when things were really tough. The extra bit of responsibility helped me."

Conditions

Occasional rain and thunderstorms are expected to interrupt the game. The pacers could find the overcast conditions helpful. South Africa last played an ODI in Kingsmead in March 2019 against Sri Lanka. De Kock made a century in that game, helping his side to 331/5. The hosts won the rain-affected game by 71 runs on DLS method.

England royally screwed up on Tuesday by first picking an under-strength team, and then playing very badly. This second game will now be abandoned with no result, and due to it being just a three-match series then the series will already have become unwinnable. Atrocious stuff from the England management.

RSA 39/1 (6.4) CRR: 5.85
(Match reduced to 45-overs per side due to rain)

Play to resume

Match abandoned.

South Africa will enter the final ODI at The Wanderers with a 1-0 series lead after the second match of the series was abandoned due to rain.

After a delayed start due to the weather, just 6.3 overs of play took place before rain returned to force another extensive break in play. Joe Root’s off-spin had snuck its way through to dismiss Quinton de Kock – Player of the Match on Tuesday – but England were not afforded the opportunity to build upon it.

Play did resume hours later with a 26-overs-a-side affair, but the dismissal of Temba Bavuma for 21 saw the heavens open up once more, putting the game to bed.

The final match of the series will take place on Sunday.

THE Standard Bank Proteas and England endured a frustrating time of trying to make something out of the second Momentum One-Day International at Hollywoodbets Kingsmead on Friday before the rain finally put an end to their efforts with a no result.

The Proteas thus go to the Imperial Wanderers Stadium on Sunday 1-0 up the three-match series for the decider in the iconic Pink Day ODI.

Rain delayed the start of play, causing the match to be reduced to 45 overs per side before a ball had even been bowled. There was then a further lengthier delay that saw the match reduced to 26 overs per side at which stage the Proteas were 38/1 in 6.3 overs.

They then had another attempt to advance the game, taking the total to 71/2 in 11.2 overs before the game came to a sodden conclusion with Temba Bavuma being dismissed off the last ball that was possible.

England named an unchanged side from the one that had done duty at Newlands in the first ODI while the Proteas in their only change gave a first cap to Bjorn Fortuin who became the 136th player to represent South Africa in the longer white ball format.

De Kock to captain Proteas T20 squad, Steyn returns as Magala and Van Biljon receive maiden T20 international call-ups

Saturday, 08 February 2020

Quinton de Kock has been named captain of the Standard Bank Proteas T20 squad that will take on England in the three-match KFC T20 international series from 12 to 16 February 2020. Included in the team is the experienced Dale Steyn who returns to international cricket after nearly a year’s absence having fully recovered from a recurring shoulder injury. The squad is capped off with the maiden call-ups of VKB Knights batsman, Pite van Biljon and Warriors seamer, Sisanda Magala.

Magala’s selection is conditional upon the passing of a fitness test that he will have to take ahead of the first match in East London next week.

Bloemfontein born, thirty-three-year-old Van Biljon impressed selectors with stand-out performances over the last 24 months in the Cricket South Africa (CSA) T20 Domestic League, the Africa T20 Cup and Mzansi Super League. He averaged 48.00 in his seven innings of the 2019 instalment of the latter League, finishing fifth in the tournament’s Highest Averages list and a strike rate of 139.13.

Steyn’s last appearance for South Africa was in March 2019 against Sri Lanka in Centurion.

The selectors have also opted to extend the rest period of Faf du Plessis and Kagiso Rabada, who will officially take no further part in the remainder of England’s tour to South Africa.

CSA Acting Director of Cricket, Graeme Smith said;

“We are pleased with the group that we have selected for this upcoming T20 series against England. We have once again taken the opportunity to reward some of the hard workers of our domestic franchise system while some of our key senior players continue with their much-needed rest period and we have again, put our faith in Quinton (de Kock) to lead this group of exciting cricketers, picking up where he left off in India where he showed exemplary leadership.

“England have of course announced a competitive team and we are comfortable that we have the squad that can take them on and return positive results.

“With a T20 World Cup not too far away, we have begun the process of identifying several players whom we will be looking at over a period of time and hope that by the time September comes along, we will have the best possible squad of 15 representing South Africa.”

Independent Selector, Linda Zondi commented;

“The squad we have selected is a good indicator of the talent that we boast in our country. CSA believes in rewarding hard work and consistently good performances that have been put in by players over a period of time. This is why we are thrilled to include Sisanda Magala and Pite van Biljon to the T20 squad as we go about our search for that T20 World Cup 15. Both have been outstanding for their respective franchise teams in the past and we are keen to see how they do against an imposing English side.

“We are also pleased to give extended opportunities to players who have performed well within the national team as our show of commitment to them.”

Standard Bank Proteas T20 squad:

England could alternate fast bowlers Jofra Archer and Mark Wood when they are both fit so they get the rest they need, says head coach Chris Silverwood.

Archer, 24, has been sidelined until the summer because of a low-grade stress fracture in his right elbow.

Wood, 30, picked up a side strain in the World Cup final in July and played his first Test cricket since February 2019 in the series in South Africa.

"Maybe they don't have to play every game," said Silverwood.

"Maybe they can play one on, one off - every now and then they play together. That's an exciting prospect.

"My dream would be to have three fast bowlers all working together at any given point - one of them sat out, getting his feet up, getting the rest that he needs. And we can keep him on the park for longer.

"I'm talking predominantly in Test cricket. But if it comes to that in the white ball [format], then why not? It's all part of managing our assets."

Archer made his England debut in May 2019 and has played all three formats of the international game.

He missed the last three Tests of England's 3-1 series in South Africa and has been ruled out of next month's tour of Sri Lanka and the Indian Premier League season, but Test captain Joe Root has denied Archer has been over-bowled.
