England v Pakistan | 3rd Test | Birmingham | Aug 3-7, 2016 | Day 3

Jayawardena also scored a heap of runs - that doesn't make him an ATG.

Also without having excellent contributions from other players, Cook would just have meaningless away runs.

Every player needs contribution from his teammates. It's a team game after all.

I think, both teams combined, today they have under bowled 10 overs, on Day 1 another 2; chances are there for 10+ in next 2 days combined. Which means, even without rain, it has become a 425 overs game.

More & more a draw looks the likely result. England bowlers are also tiered & I am sure Cook won't declare before 375+ lead, if applicable; rather he would like to go to Oval 1-1.

In olden days, they used to play 6 Day Test for the last one, if the Series in in touching distance (margin of 1 Test), before that, time less Test - and those were 18+/hour days. Time less might not be feasible now, but I think, such series deciders can be played for 6 days, specially when the over rate of around 14/hour these days.

That is your opinion fair enough.

But before you mention Cook is ATG in the modern era we have seen a much better opener in Graeme Smith. He averages a slightly higher but his strike rate isn't pedestrian like we see with Cook.

Cook:
Average - 47-48 SR: 46.93

G.Smith:
Average: 48.25 SR: 59.67

There is no debate G.Smith is far ahead of Cook as an opener. Speaking of impact he led his team to number 1 for several years with bat and captaincy.

Cook is a poor mans G.Smith if anything.

Smith is also an ATG.

Will england even lose a single wicket in this innings? Whats the record for highest opening partnership?

England are a resilient team. They have made a lot of good comebacks in Tests in the last couple of years.

Yes, he failed against quality fast bowling but it is hard to ignore his longevity and the amount of runs that he has scored. Also, consider that he has the toughest job in the world, opening in England.

He has been brilliant as a captain. He turned a team of inexperienced players into world's #1 test team who are playing good cricket in all conditions.

Opening in SA and SL has been tougher than in England in the last 4 years.

Garbage as captain - England are not the best team in the world and they certainly haven't proven in the last 2-3 years that they can play in all conditions.

That breaks my heart. Last night it was Azhar's last ball dismissal and now this. Another of those gloomy nights.

Need to strike big tomorrow but pitch is utterly flat.

We can get a draw even if England stay on top.

The wicket has surely eased up ... just the way our tail batted .... and the way their openers have played so far.

Yes, draw is a likely scenario here.

England's lead is just 17 runs. Even if they score 330 runs tomorrow, the lead will be just over 350 and I am sure England will not declare until they have at least that much lead.

I am sure Pakistan survive the 5th day if they don't panic.

Ramiz banter is so cringey. seems out of his depth.

I would say 50% Draw 30% England win. 20% Pakistani win

Also, any one can check - just about yesterday's County scores - unless interrupted, each day is played for 98 overs. That's 390+ overs in 4 Days. English players face these type of situation (300, 450 after 1st innings at Lunch on Day 3) several times every season. Therefore, they are accustomed enough to face a deficit of 100+ & still enough time left for winning the match from there on. In PAK Domestic style, back to back 250 scores means, rest of the match is academic exercise - no intensity, pressure or target.

Ok, then which team is better?

Won in Australia
Won in England
Won in SA
Played competitive cricket in the UAE

Cook has used his resources very well to produce such good results.

For a result in this match england should get out at least 20 overs before close tomorrow and that would bean around 250 more runs.
