Whats all these reports that the MCC members VERBALLY ABUSED Graeme Smith and his team inside 'The Long Room'?

Apparently they will or have issued an apology?

Any one heard about this?

Smith is famous for his bad light-related antics and gamesmanship, as anyone on England's last tour to South Africa will testify, but in this instance, he may have been the victim of a misunderstanding. I wouldn't be at all surprised to see some actual bad light-related stuff from him over the next 3 days, though.

Harvey - in all fairness - is Smith the only captain in world cricket to indulge in a bit of gamesmanship, whether over bad light or otherwise (let's leave aside this incident for a minute, as you say it may have been a misunderstanding)?

For the captain of a fielding side to act like a drama queen over the light is a disgrace. Yet more than once on our last tour there he successfully pressurised the umpires into stoppages in light conditions that the batsmen were happy with, and the spectators thought looked perfectly playable. Strangely at Centurion in the final Test (with SA trailing 2-1), conditions were sometimes so dark that specators could barely see the ball, but he was perfectly happy to stay on then, even with flashes of lightning not far away! English fans have been on his case ever since, and he shouldn't be surprised if the odd misunderstanding arises.

Graeme Smith has not made many friends among the English, and I rate watching England beat his team on their own turf as my finest cricket-watching experience.

Geez is Smiffy moaning about a few catcalls from the not-so-cheap seats? He should harden up for heavens sake.

Also what's this about (from the link above)

After a rain delay during England's innings, the tourists were advised by the umpires that play would resume at 5.15pm.

It is understood the England batsmen, Ian Bell and Ryan Sidebottom, were not given the same information so they returned to the field and were forced to wait in front of the pavilion for a number of minutes for their opponents to re-appear.

The Lord's crowd became agitated and there was loud booing around the ground.

But South Africa coach Mickey Arthur claimed last night that spectators in front of the pavilion were shouting comments to him on the dressing-room balcony including 'Are you Pakistan in disguise?' - a reference to the abandoned ball-tampering Test at The Oval in 2006.

Perhaps some of the crowd had paid good money to be at the Oval when Pakistan refused to take to the field. A bit naughty of the writer to refer to it as "the ball tampering Test", though.

Bit naughty of the section of the crowd to be describing them as "Pakistan in disguise" as well, I'd say. Agree with Inzy or not, he was defending his country's honor that day...not worth comparing with SA and Smith here.

A cricket team was accused of ball tampering. How was that an affront to a whole country's honour? Was Inzi trying to say "no Pakistan player could ever commit such a heinous act"? If so, then he must have had a very short memory, and had clearly forgotten the pitch-gouging activities of Shahid Afridi in Faisalabad a few months previously, which constituted a far worse crime than the relatively minor one of ball tampering. And I'm not even going to take into account the subsequent issues regarding drugs....

Let's agree to disagree mate...we'll always see Oval 2006 differently I guess :)

Man, england bowlers turning things around....

Cant believe it

England bowlers bowling a much better length.

Side note Stuart Broad and Sidebottom are clearly the opening bowlers with the worst hair in cricket. Thankfully Anderson has got rid of his rooster do.

47-3 and still 340 or so away from avoiding the follow on - perilous times for the South Africans.

SA are experiencing the best of British weather how the ball is talking now and SA bats man are all at sea.

They should complain to Darrell Hair since he is the one who forfeited the game

S.A in big trouble here. England need to ram home the adavantage because in recent years india and Sri lanka have escaped with draws in similar situations when they shouldnt have!

True. India escaped defeat on the 1st Test in 2007 only and only because of the weather. Because of that unfortunate draw, India went on to win the entire Test series.

Victory to England so long as the weather holds....

Yep - been a thoroughly dominant performance from England thus far. Shocking stuff from SA, even given the relative lack of preparation - they are the second ranked side in the world after all.

72 innings without a duck

Nope, second in both Tests and ODIs (the rankings got updated recently).

Typical South Africa, come in highly rated and.....

Its certainly been a hugely underwhelming performance. They ain't going to bother your lot (as was being expected) if they play like this.

That's pretty much the story of South African cricket, they fail at the big test, go back and beat up on everyone else, come in with lots of media hype and fail at the next big test.

I still can't believe they only bowled 3 balls at the stumps in the first hour of the first day. :)))

Yes this will deflate them as they were talking themselves up too (their coach referring to them as being something special as compared to England etc.).

The English pacers certainly put it into perspective with a much more disciplined performance.

Yep the Saffers made Lords pitch look like the one in the Asia Cup

It was a phenomonal delivery by Monty to get rid of McKenzie!

Not often you see a left arm spinner bowl a right-hander around his legs from round the wicket, is it?

Yep, will be interesting how they pick up in the rest of the series because they are all good bowlers as the averages show. Trouble is if they are still settling in by the second Test, the series may have gone before they really get going.

Even most of the Sky commentators thought SAF would win.

Only Atherton & Lloyd voted for england

I'm a big fan of Monty. An excellent bowler and very down to earth.

And that Mendis will be trashed agains IND in the asia cup :P

Srry, had to say that :P

ABCD 44 out ct at midoff by Andersen off Panesar. Brilliant catch there
SA 161-5

AB de Villiars out, great catch by Anderson of Panasar!

Panesar to de Villiers, OUT, what a catch by Anderson! Monty tossed it up and de Villiers skipped into a leg-side flick which appeared to be evading mid-on for four. Until, that is, Anderson flung himself high to his left to cling onto a superb two-handed grasp while airborne
AB de Villiers c Anderson b Panesar 42 (119b 5x4 0x6) SR: 35.29

Big wicket for England. It has been hard work on a tough pitch, but they've kept it tight and have prised out another wicket. Very impressed by the workmanlike effort thus far.

Last year at Kolkata PAK were in a similar situation against IND when Misbah and Kamran shared that huge partnership to save the game

Sad that de Villiers innings ended like that, he's one of my favorite players on the international circuit, because of his fearlessness and obvious, obvious talent.

South Africa looking down the barrel here.

Prince taking singles early in the over. Took on the 2nd ball last over and Morkel got out. This over takes a single first ball and Harris on strike

Harris out ct by Andersen off Panesar. Another good catch
SA 203-8 - trails by 390

Hope South Africa get stuffed and well hammered here, can't stand this trash team.

As said earlier, only rain can save them

How is the weather forecast?

Even Pakistan didnt get as badly obliterated as South Africa are against England...

I am with England all the way here and hope South Africa lose by their biggest margin of defeat e.g. Innings and 300 runs or something

Now the roles have reversed; Steyn looking like a fart in the windstrom with the bat lol.... Thats ok I guess since he is not a batsman..

new ball taken after 83.4 overs
SA 229-8 - trails by 364
edit: new ball taken at end of the over 84. Sidebottom in
17 overs left today

These 2 are doing a useful job here.

Monty factor is huge because the ball is already spinning a lot and i expect him to pick 5 or 6 wickets in the next innings

tickets are available for tomorrow. only 75 & 80 pound tickets available. 800 of them
12 overs left today

It was a fighting innings by Prince but I don't rate him much, to be honest.
