What's new

England v South Africa l 2nd Test l Headingley l 18/7/08 to 22/07/2008

Kallis 4 bowled off Anderson. played on
SA 76-3 after 23.5 overs - trails by 127

At least Vaughan knows what it feels like to have the opposition dressing room tell the batsman to stay on the field now

Boycott not happy. Saying if Bowden can't see that then he shouldn't be umpiring

50-50 that one.

They are the most difficult to give!!!

And now caught behind??? Off the glove....and a no-ball!!

Stick your T20 up your ****

Freddie making an impact with the ball

88mph+

Looking fit!

The more replays you see of the Amla catch - the more it looks OUT.

But the more times 3rd Ump sees them - they are given not out.

Camera ALWAYS lies with the 'were the fingers under the ball'

So basically we have an 'unofficial' referral system running anyway.

Dont England always 'veto' the referral system??

Bowden's good decisions are going SA's way and his bad SA's way too!

Well if you think about it, the grass has give, it's not a solid entity, so even if the fingers does go under the ball, firstly they can't be seen and the ball appears to be a ground level.

It's entirely possible for the fingers to be under the ball at the same time and the ball appears 'grounded'.

Sky Sports making a belated analysis on the Dhoni cheating/KP walking analysis.

I remember last year everyone was saying that at the end of the day the correct decision was made, no the case here then, Mr Botham?

101/3 at stumps, trailing by 102.

Hashim on 18, Ashwell on 9.

Could easily have been more wickets down, though.

Irrespective of the rights and wrongs, Amla should have been out a couple of balls later, but for Bowden's gross incompetence. Flintoff bowled a marvellous over and was undeserving when he eventually got nothing for it.

Either the LBW, controversial catch or no-ball catch of Amla, had one been given I think the match would be very much in the balance. 101-3, you would favour SA to get a lead, perhaps prominent one if the sun comes out tomorrow.

Geoff Boycott forthright as ever about Billy Bowden after an umpiring blunder on the first day of the Headingley Test

I dont like Bowden. Its as if he enjoys being the centre of attention.

Personally I think he makes a lot of mistakes out there.

As for this match, intriguingly posied and remember the SA tail basically starts at number 8. If the Saffies could get a lead of 50 or so that could prove crucial though.

Rubbish as he was today, I think we can forgive Bowden for anything for a good few years yet. Remember who gave out Kasprowicz (wrongly) at Edgbaston. Quite an important poor decision :)

Bowden is just NOT a good umpires.
Any remember his decision in favor of Simon Jones during the 05 Ashes? Perhaps the plumbest LBW i have ever seen and it was NOT given. I recall N Hussian saying something along the lines of "this is the worst decision that i have ever seen in test cricket"

after day 1, the saffies are in the drving seat, even though there are 4 more days to go, if saffies have a good day tommrrow then it would br hard for england to win this test match

I used to be a fan of Bowden but it does often seem like he's more concerned with his own image and acting unorthodox than he is with the actual decision. He's missed a few important ones over the years now.

How ridiculous...there is no way AT ALL , ever , even remotely possible that vaghn caught that cach cleanly.....laughable ....don't make up your minds based on biast commentary.

start delayed 15 mins due to rain, play to start 11:15, bowl expected to swing if there is moisture in the wicket

Play starts, dot ball from James first up to Ashwell

Now Ashwell drives a boundary.

158-4

This game has been littered with some terrible umpiring decisions.

I'm relieved its not Aleem Dar or Asad Rauf out there - the media / comms would be lynching them

From BBC livetext:

Amla prods forward at a full toss and is hit on the pad - and after an absolute age (in the manner of Steve Bucknor), Daryl Harper raises his finger and Patto has his first Test wicket! Hawk-Eye suggests it was going down leg

That lbw decision looks worse and worse the more times we see it, but as we used to say when I was in New Zealand for the Wellington and Napier Tests, "it's always worth a shout with Daryl Harper".

Would appear that the DH brothers from Australia are well fed in England.

The standard of umpiring from this pair has been awful so far in the series. It's not only the appeals they have upheld, but the ones they haven't as well.

Bad umpiring spoils games - as well as possibly deciding games.

As a neutral watching this - I cant believe how fruustrating the umpiring has been

Brilliant shot to bring up his fifty

Good, gritty player under pressure this, Ashwell.

Another six for Ashwell! Good stuff. Monty being taken on.

200/4.

3 behind now

Prince & A B De V going after Montgomery.

Being hit out of the attack!

Another 6

Monty - or Montgomery as Oxy would say - has gone for 25 off 5 after that over.

11 runs of that Broad over

Broad's Test bowling stats now:

18 wickets, average 48, SR 91

Prince 85 - ABCDE 40
SA 242-4 after 78.4 overs - lead of 40 overs
100 run partnership
newball available after next over

Prince looks like a player in mold of Gary kirsten/Chanderpaul. Hes a grafter but has been superb in this series so far!

Always scores runs when his side needs them - that so very rare and invaluable trait in batsmen.

England are so ordinary, it's not even funny. Consecutive centuries for Ashwell Prince, of all people. Even with Flintoff, it looks very forced. He's not bowling as fast as he used to, he's only just short admittedly, but it's noticeable that he lacks that extra 1 or 2 mph that he used to spark. It's looking very much like a side dominated by one man, Kevin Pietersen. I'm very disappointed but not at all surprised by their efforts in this Test. An innings defeat can probably only be staved off by KP, and even then a defeat seems inevitable.

England on the whole so far in this inns have bowled to short and also not made the S.A batsmen play enough in and around off-stick. Conditions are helpful to the bowlers but england have not shown enough discapline to cause S.A middle order.

Is it just me or is Prince one of the most annoying player you can watch ? I absolutely hate watching this man bat something that really puts me off about his batting..

Prince 118 - abcde 64
SA 300-4 after 97 overs - lead of 97
22 overs left today

One man stands in South Africa's way.

SOuth AFrican born Kevin Pieterson.

England looking devoid of any ideas and creativity

lol would you prefer to watch prince or jimmy adams bat ?

Bad light stops play and that should be the end of the day
Prince 134 - AB 70
SA 322-4 after 105 overs - lead of 119

It's not just you, trust me.

Prince is the least talented of the South African batsman, for all his runs, and match-saving innings.

I agree - Prince is rubbish. He's only looking good now because, Freddie apart, he can gorge himself on a poor attack. I'm amazed by how bad our attack is actually now I mention it. Broad looks years away from being good enough, Jimmy is typical Jimmy, Monty looks harmless on pitches that don't offer him something, whereas Pattinson's an Australian. Even Freddie looks short of the ability and pace he offered in his prime. That's not really surprising, but really, what chance do we have if Freddie's lost the spark? Every single member of this attack averages 32 or more, for God's sake.

Anyway, when I see Prince, I think of Paul Collingwood in the mirror actually.

Prince has done a lot with veyr little natural ability....there is no doubt he made the side originally as a political selection , but since has earned his place on merit with hard work....good for him.

(yes , he's boring to watch)

Born ?

Andrew Straus is South African born. Kevin pieterson is South African full stop.

Princess gone.

Glad to see Boucher in. We might actually see some cricket now as opposed to blocking and leaving
