England v West Indies: First Test - Lords [Updates]

Umpires coming out probably to check the light. it is 20 min to 7. if play doesn't start by 7 then it is over for the day. otherwise they can play until 7:30

The day was pretty dull and stop-start on the whole, and some of the 'bad light' was far from unplayable, Rudi Koertzen proving he is an idiot once again. 200-3 from 56 overs is a fair effort considering the swing on offer and how the batsmen could never get into a rhythm.

Losing Pietersen is a blow considering we want to get a big total on the board as soon as possible, they should get 450 if they bat the 2nd day against this poor attack but I seriously doubt the strength of this batting lineup in a pressure situation, it's so inexperienced and a bit limited in general. Tresco, Vaughan and Flintoff, your country needs you...

I reckon England should get at least 450+. In response the WI will collapse and lose by an innings.

it was such a boring dull atmosphere. i knew test match cricket could be boring but this toook the piiiiss.

back to the match, if west indies can take a quick wicket or two i can see england getting out for under 350

saaw first session and bi of 2nd session yesterday.
match was very boring (even Eng was scoring at good run rate), atmosphere of ground and useless WI bowlers killed the game yesterday.
they 5 tests or 4 tests ?

WI need good bowling attack to keep the series alive, these bowlers if don't get wicket with new ball, they are not much effective.

Why do West Indies keep getting 4 Tests? After this series is completed, they would have played 12 Test matches against them in around 3 years; a 4 test match series every year, almost.

I know. Its quite a disgrace really.

That was a sitter. 2nd slip falls to the ground like someone has stolen his baby.

as i speak a huge shout for lbw. no shot played and looks plumb. poor decision by rauf on first viewing

Asad Rauf turns down a stone dead lbw which Collingwood didnt even offer a shot to.

EDIT

The bowler was Taylor! :22:

I said 'not out' first of all but then I hadn't registered the lack of shot offered by Collingwood.

I've got a headache, what's your excuse Asad?

Been some good bowling upfront by the Windies. Good swing movement and in the right areas. Collingwood should have been out twice already.

Collymore is just so unlucky; that was just another example. He consistently seems to bowl well but never picks up as many wickets as he deserves. Feel for the guy
Collymore hasnt bowled today, what game are you watching?

Oh dear Cook has tossed it away cutting it straight to the man at point.

Wicket taken.
A brilliant innings comes to an end.
Cook cuts and gives Bravo the catch at point.
He goes for 105.
4/219.

219/4; West Indies fighting back with some good, disciplined bowling. If only they could catch, it would be nice.

Wow. He made a real mess of that. He really stuffed that up. They aren't taking their chances.

50 up for Colly. His 5th 50.
From 95 balls. He has been struggling a bit this morning. Will he take the oppurtunity to make a century?

Oh god. Gayle on.
England 4/266

50 partnership up.

Collingwood 62
Bell 17

man im tired of these games...world cricket is poor at the moment..never seen it this bad...a decent attack would have england in all sorts of trouble..and if athers, robin smith and gooch were playing now they would be dominating sides ll over the place!!...bowling the world over is just rubbish!!

i mean collingwood and bell..seriously? a decent attack would make these guys look ordinary!! like in oz..

Lunch

England 4/278

Collingwood 63
Bell 23

Windies bowled quite well but didn't take their chances when they got a chance. If they want to succeed in Test match cricket, they have to hold on. Catches win matches. I know losing Lara is a massive blow, but they need to move on.

I wonder how Prior will go. I still disagree with his selection (I though Read or Nixon should play instead), but he was chosen and I hope he does well.

I dont know what you are talking about. Collingwood and Bell did okay in Australia, especially Collingwood in the one dayers who produced world class performances when it was needed most. They are both good players who are capable of more, but they understandably look like they are in their comfort zone and just building a total today. They are not exhilirating to watch but this is arguably the most dour batting lineup we have fielded for a long time so until Flintoff, Vaughan and Tresco come back, a day watching England bat is not going to blow you away.

Yes, it has been boring, but this was the first series of the summer for a reason...the tests and the one dayers against India will be far better.

Prior was only selected because the new coach is a fan of his. I hope he does well but he will probably struggle and there are plenty of better wkt/bats in England that the new coach will inevitably turn to later on in the summer.

Who's the new coach?

Lovely shot there by Bell. Clipped off the legs all the way to the boundary. He moves to 36.

Slow going from the England batsman. Not much swing. Collingwood is going too slow for my liking. A strike rate of 49 as Bell is beaten between bat and pad. Good ball. Seam up and the ball keeps low.

50 up for Ian Bell.
Comes up from 82 balls.

England 4/331.
Collingwood 85

Edged down to 3rd man and that is Colly Wobbles 4th test hundred.
Coming from 178 balls. Well done.
England 4/352.
Bell 55.

50 up for Matt Prior on debut. Superb innings i must say. Off only 55 balls too

against a superb wi team
I know, i still don't think he should be in the team but fair play, a test match 50 is a test match 50, no matter what team it's against.

when are Eng going to declare? WI could just block everything when it's their turn and go for the draw. And the weather could turn and increase the chances of a draw too

467/5. Still 27 overs left in the day. I reckon we'll declare tonight, probably with something around 550 on the board.

Quite a brilliant innings from Prior! Terriffic stuff. Currently standing at 87* off just 88 balls!

England might just have 4 centurions in this match; what egg on the face of the West Indians. They have been woeful.

And as I speak - Prior brings up a quickfire 100. Great innings.

100 for Ian Bell now, his 6th in test cricket. He's a run machine in test cricket at home.

So Englands top 7 consists of 3 South Africans.......... :13:

In the sense that Arthur Wellesley was Irish and Ted Dexter Italian... yes.

Well done to Prior for his first test! He proved me wrong.
But could he be one of those players that start off brilliantly in their career, then a year later, are out of the test team? I hope not, for this mans sake.

Will England bat the Windies out of the match? Or declare overnight and have a go in the early morning? We will have to wait and see.

How is this for figues. 4-2-4-0
What great bowling!

Such as...?

On top form then Chris Read, Geraint Jones and Paul Nixon are better all-rounders for me. I understand why Prior was selected though, and yesterday could be the first step in changing my opinion, but the jury is still out...

big shout for lbw not given by asad rauf. it pitched in line and was just clipping leg stump.

Asad Rauf is one of those umpires whose not biased towards either team, he just blows.

To keep up the pressure we need a couple more wickets before they bring up the 100...time for some Monty!

Hoggard off the field. He has strained his groin. Collingwood finished his over.

Windies 2/97 at lunch. Windies probably won that session. But England got wickets when needed.

I think we'll have to agree to strongly disagree. I don't think Prior is the next messiah but I really don't think any of those guys can put a better claim up.

Bad ball. Punished. Short and Sarwan pulls it to the midwicket boundary.

LBW finally given by Rauf. Monty gets the key wicket of Sarwan for 35.

151/3
