143 runs scored in 62 overs . Why so defensive ? Dont see any declaration today & Root reaches a dull hundred.

You don't understand test cricket, do you ?

400 runs ahead against a team you just bowled out for 128. Good batting wicket, bowling isn't particularly dangerous and you still score at 2 runs an over.

Edit: Quality century by Root I have to admit.

Lead 400. England need to grind another 100 runs before going bonkers. Straussy right in pointing out that the pitch does not deteriorate. 600 would be great

600, are you mad. Australia aint chasing 400. England should just hit out and look to get 500+ before the close of play.

explain

just making an observation, i think england has very few players who are interesting to watch. for starters, in no way could you say the england batting line-up is any more entertaining than the south africa batting-line up, therefore it is a boring one. then the bowlers; broad, finn, bresnan are all very boring bowlers to watch, very mechanical, don't mix it up, no great skills or signature delivery, just line & length, over and over again at a decent-ish pace. you couldn't even imagine them entertaining anybody. (anderson on the other hand is sometimes great to watch with his command of the swinging ball)

they're a fantastic team but their cricket is not easy on the eye.

Well let me try to explain the script here a bit. Midway through the first session, Clarke realized that the pitch was too flat for Australia to roll England out cheaply. They only way back for Australia was to bowl dry and hope England play reckless shots going for quick runs. Clarke would have quite happy to have to chase to a target of less than 500. The chase may well've been impossible but it atleast would have given them something to play for and salvage some pride.

England sensed that and they decided to play it the hard way. There is all the time in the world left in the game. Grind out a lead of 500 by this evening and may be add another quick 100 tomorrow morning. Australia will then have nothing to play for and it will be quite easy for England to roll out the dispirited Aussies.

If i was Poms captain i would bat out today , even bat till lunch tomorrow and tire the Aussies bowlers.

This is classic test match batting. England have batted themselves into a position where there is only one result now.

I know what you're doing and I'd do the same in your position.

Doesn't change the fact that it is boring to watch.

It is not always about having enough runs. Putting the Aussies in a hopeless situation will make it easier for England to bowl them out the second time. Also, I do not mind watching Harris and Siddle bowl 30 overs each this innings. With their fitness levels, England could potentially force Aus to field a new bowling unit in the third test

where did pattinson's pace go. he's almost as slow as trundler broad now.

Yep. That would be a strategy to win the next test also. If you wind up too early, Australia have extra time and energy to plan for the next test. Keep them in the field as long as possible and you have scored a psychological win also.

Imagine me getting up at around 2 in the morning only to watch the likes of Ponting, Gilly pile on runs against our hapless bunch for the whole of nineties and nougties :D

At least Ponting and Gilly did it a bit quicker.

459 for 4 & 20 overs left . Will we see a declaration today or Cookie will bat till lunch tomorrow ?

Reminds me of Ashes 2006 opening test Complete with ineffective opening bowler. Then it was Harmison. Though there is no terrible wide here.

The series is just not the same without the Poms making all the noises, very disappointing. We have nothing to debate about.

1 wicket has fallen today so Australia can take the positives from that, no?
"Lets wait till they declare (which is imminent) and bat time" no?

Clarke does not have a happy face on . poor guy, silly batsmen, conspiring Watto & a dry pitch with 481 behind :)

Australian batting on this tour has been worse than India in 2011. But their bowling is better.

he was a passenger and a poster child for the great Aussies, the honeymoon is over i suppose. Atleast B. Hodge never had the same preferential treatment as him

it's amazing how everyone one PP thinks they know the game more than players playing out in the middle. Why should England declare right now? They can so easily bat Australia out if the series by making them field for session after session and psychologically destroying their fragile bowlers. And not to me mention a humiliating defeat like this will reopen the dressing room cracks.
