He needs another 2074 runs to finish with a career average (provided he's not out). There are another 61 overs left today, so if he scores 34 runs an over he can do it by the end of play today.

Even though I know your post is sarcastic still I would say that my original post was in generally overall his test career and not to do with this test.

Thought a lead of 400 would have been enough for England to have a go at India with at least 20 overs tonight.

Strangely it is not and they are rather wasting time that they could have used for bowling.

Not sure what the plan is here

India are totally out of the match, and there's no personal milestones England can be going after

Just wasting valuable time

Shami’s effort here reminds me of Amir in Australia.

Beat the bat about 40+ times but ended up with no luck and atrocious figures.

All those talking about India should have played an extra batsman and dropped the 5th bowler/all rounder. Well the result is in front of you, all of a sudden the bowling attack looks stressed and under the pump with the overs piling up.

Why are you sending in Rashid? Declare, you muppet!

Most people are clueless anyways.

What is England waiting for?

Target of 450 & around 110 overs to get 10 wickets - they are on course. Root is taking the game absolutely hopeless situation so that he can keep 8 catching fielders all through. Unless there is a rain threat, they can bat for 2/3 overs more.

Legendary kaptan removed Vihari after he took a double wicket maiden and was troubling Stokes.

Now after everyone is set and looking to smash, he brings him back on.

You can't beat Kohli when it comes to tactics.

In the game prediction thread, I actually mentioned that one of the Indian pacers might break down in this Test bowling on hard Oval wicket and this Test is destined to go to distance of 450 overs. In a 5 Test series, strategy can be to start with 6+4 combination and later 5+4+1, so that work load of bowlers can be managed. Here IND did opposite.

India should never play 6+4 in my opinion.

2 reasons:

1. Even a spicy pitch can flatten out.

2. Indian bowlers have improved by miles but each have their on and off days. 4 bowlers makes it risky.

4 bowlers can work if you have Sachin, Sehwag, Ganguly type part timers who can easily bowl 10-15 overs in a day shared.

Also I felt had India played 2 spinners in all overseas tests (except Joberg), we could have won more. Ash + Jaddu specifically. Would have won Centurion, Edgbaston, Southampton and hopefully Trent Bridge. Again, not guaranteed but could have happened. Both of them complement each other.

Root wants to win by 150+, should've declared a few overs ago

Actually, I think their tactics is perfect. What I have noticed in this series is Dukes ball swings late after about 15 overs. We have around 18 overs tonight, which is perfect for Anderson & Broad to go flat out for 5 each, then tomorrow morning they'll start with semi old ball for a long spell. And, Root can keep 7-2 filed now with none in front of batsman.

And that too after being reduced to 3 bowlers. Utterly stupid captain. Should be sacked.

Not IND, no team can play with a 6+4 combination, unless there is one Warne or Murali in that 4. Either it should be 4+1 with that 1 at least as good as Stokes with bat, or 3+2, with those 2 at least as good as Shadab & Fahim with ball.

Who would analyze him and correct it? He doesn't even want a coach, he wants friends! Unfortunately our mass crowd won't burn effigies & pelt stones at player's house anymore after the advent of IPL, they have become jovial more than patriotic! (Anyways they wouldn't have cared for overseas tests, would have bothered only world cups!) Heart burnt true cricket fans such as us know that we have the resources to do much better than this!

Its ok guys he celebrates with passion after fall of wicket and isn't afraid to sledge opposition.... that's all that counts.

What's worse is that there are GENUINELY no alternatives.

We have inconsistent Rahane who is useless in Asia.

Then we have an intelligent idiot called Ashwin.

Then we have Chepu who is just 4-5 failures away from being dropped.

Kohli is our only choice.

He is the real leader in that group.

Too bad he is an absolutely dumb fellow.

Unless Pandya can find some consistency with bat or ball , I think we should go four bowlers + vihari from now on and he will have to bowl 10 -12 overs a day. We need the extra batsman especially considering w don't have any batting depth.

I still thought 400 was enough for England and would have given them extra 6-10 overs to have up their sleeves for tonight.

It could come back to bite them in the end as you never know.

Only hoping for legendary 10(386) kind of innings from Pujara to save us!

Bhaag Viru Bhaag - See the result of 4 bowlers.

Agreed. But he's the dumbest captain I've seen since Waqar Younis. Shastri atleast should be booted out.

This is something I have been fighting with Junaids for 3 years now - all-rounder for the sake of all-rounder is no use in Test. A Test all-rounder must make the team at least as 4th bowler without considering his batting, other wise it's better to go with 4 specialist bowlers on absolute bowling merit and Captain has to extract 23-25 overs/Test from his 2-3 batsmen. At worst, one can go with 2 bowling all-rounder + 3 specialist bowlers, but picking No. 7 to 10 for 30, 25, 20 & 15 batting contribution is a recipe of disaster - almost every tight contest will be lost closely.

Rahul was severely overhyped.... looking like a tailender atm

Agreed. For us it's a no brainer since our lower order can't consistently score runs so it's better to play our 4 best bowlers. If pandya can consistently perform as a 4th seamer then he can be included but don't think he has the work ethic to make it on his bowling alone. Better to play 6+1+4 and get part timers to bowl.

If India play to potential they can draw this.

Unlikely, unless it rains. Moeen, Adil & Stokes will come into play with Old ball at Oval. Besides, ENG have declared with 108 overs at hand, means 2 new balls and 2 semi old balls.

It'll be a monumental effort indeed, if IND can save this game batting out 108 overs.

Canford Cliffs yeh kya se kya hogaya meray bhai :ssmith

Aap tou series jeetnay walay thay :sree

SHaw should have debuted here.

What was the point of Dhawan in a meaningless Test when the series is already over?

Dhawan needed to be fresh anyways for Asia Cup.

Kumble-Kohli combo was still working, but Shashtri-Kohli combo is atrocious

It wasn't . They had serious issues with each other with kumble apparently being authoritarian. But shastri is absolutely useless. But even changing him is actually only a cosmetic move. We need deeper structural changes in our domestic cricket imo.

2 down in three overs..... Going down in a heap.

I hope Canford Cliffs bhai can shed his arrogance. Your team got the phainti of a lifetime.

THe only interest in the match now is if KOhli can pile on some more runs in this series.

Wow wow wow

Canford Cliffs yeh kya se kya hogaya.... now King Kohli gets a first ball duck.

2 runs for 3 down :)))

Playing on roads has taken out batting judgement from the game - hardly any opener has any clue about where his off-stick is. Tactics is openers & No. 3 take guard on leg-stick, so that their first forward stress aligns then exactly on off-stick line. While, middle order, often takes guard at middle stick line, so that he can play more in to leg side. Long back, I saw a game at Leeds I believe, where Gooch left 6 balls against Ambi, shoulder arming and each time from stump camera, a slight line of his off-stick could be seen. Closest of the 6 missed off bail by 1 inch height and 2 inch width.

May be now, openers (& No. 3) should start to take guard on middle stick, as their footwork isn't aligning them on off stick line.

Ok.

Even Kohli is gone.

Looks like the entire batting line up has checked out long time ago.

Kohli has been a giant this series but not even giants can carry their team for five tests.

You need to have separate teams for Tests and ODI's/T20's then.

Moral victory for Kohli:

Anderson did not take his wicket even once during this series.

THere is nothing in the pitch for pacers.

England pacers are trundling at 82-83MPH bowling straight and batsmen are playing tired lazy shots.

Has he though? If he had scored his runs in situations where they were more needed, India might have won.

No doubt - at least openers & new ball pair, and may be spinners as well. It'll definitely go there.

Actually, it started in 1990s already, which was one of our regular discussion point in past. Traditional openers can't work in different games with different tempo - to cater that, every tactically sound team in 90s brought their best middle order with good shot making ability, but good defensive technique as well to open. AUS with Mark/Gilly, IND with SRT/Ganguly, NZ with Astle/Fleming, SRL with Sanath/Dilshan (Mahela also opened), ENG opened with KP, Lara opened for WIN ....... PCB actually did opposite - brought YK at 3 and dropped MoYo/Inzi at 4/5 - fortunately Saeed was natural opener from domestic, so he survived, otherwise he was destined for no. 6 :)
