What's new

England Vs New Zealand | 2nd Test | Old Trafford

N.Z 90/4

Monty turning the ball sqaure. I think 300+ lead and its game over for england.

Yep. However they'll need KP to play one of his great innings to win. If he goes early England will probably lose
I hope M Vaughan makes up for his momentum killing 30 in the 1st innings! Need a big hundred from the skip

Yes, batsmen will have to play quickly because you just can't afford to defend and wait for the bad ball on this pitch. Go for your shots, if a ball has your name written on it, you can't help it, but make sure you've got 40 off 60 or something when you're dismissed, not 15 off 60

Vettori out ct at deep square by Broad off Panesar. sweeping
91-5 - lead of 270
Monty on 99 wickets

yeah but the way Monty is bowling you would have to think that Daniel will very dangerous on day 5 so it certainly will be a very tough chase.

Oram can come in now but instead ballaybaz Mills in.

Does this mean Oram can't bat in this innings? In that case, England are into the tail, just Mills and O'Brien left. Martin doesn't count (average 2 in Tests)

Agreed

Although it looks like England will be batting on day 3 or day 4 itself

Oram could have come in at #7 but instead they sent Mills at #7

Well Mills did get a 50 in the first innings, NZ probably trying to give Oram max possible time to recover

Fair enough I suppose

Taylor out LBW. Panesar gets 5fer and 100th test wicket
NZ 91-6 - lead of 270
Oram in

Oram might not be able to bowl. Commentators saying he looks in a lot of pain while batting ... some shoulder problem

Tea. 99-6. England's session, probably our first of the entire match. Belatedly putting up a fight, but probably too late.

Intriguing test match is this one.

Still fancy the Kiwis with the lead approaching 300.

All out for 114

Were 85-2 at one stage

England need 294 to take a 1-0 lead in this series

Useful fightback by England, but 294 on this pitch is an extremely tall order.

Vaughan has become what Ganguly was torwars the end of his tenure - defensive, tentative, over cautious

And KP has truly become a true Pom now - all unsure and timid.

Vaughan is the key to this test match now. A solid innings from his and this target won't seem nearly as daunting.

I think NZ are falling in to the "pitch trap". They are relying too much on the pitch instead of their own skill

The number of twists and turns in this match is a good reminder why T20/IPL is an utter joke compared to Test cricket

And I would add that some of the crazy shots played in this test match leading to dismissal are taken from T20 :(

A useful opening partnership, which has given us just a sniff of a chance.

20.5 Vettori to Cook, OUT, and that's the breakthrough. Vettori strikes! Is that the opening NZ were looking for? Slightly short again but he's extracted good bounce here, inside edge onto the thigh pad, bobs up to Marshall at short leg and he's lapped it up, that's No.1 for NZ

AN Cook c Marshall b Vettori 28 (69b 2x4 0x6) SR: 40.57 :P

4-5 overs remaining today

Thats sounds convincing to me.

I missed the comment. I only saw the commentators laughing

Eng 76-1 after 27 overs - need 218 to win
End of day 3

England's session again. England have shown the positive attitude with the bat that was absent during the first innings, and are right back in this game, even if New Zealand are still favourites.

What a fantastic day's cricket!

Whilst they had the 'hot spot' image on the screen, he said 'Even Monty has a hot spot' (something in his pocket had lit up)

'And so has the umpire' (unfortunately for the umpire, something had lit up where it shouldnt have lit up live on TV.......) :D

England rock solid favourites...unless they collapso again like earlier today...

Great cricket today.

Great cricket today.

A very difficult 4th innings pitch, but I saw Michael Vaughan score a big hundred to salvage an unlikely draw in Kandy on a turning pitch against Murali in 2003. He came out to bat today looking as if he really meant business, and if anyone has the reserves of character to pull this one off, he does.

On the other hand, he might get something unplayable, and the rest could all go down like a house of cards. It's that kind of pitch.

eng should not underestimate vettori

the guy has uncanny abilities to turn the match around

expect him to trouble the eng batsmen tomorrow :D

Aussie, you wont lose

287 is a few too many for the WI

Meanwhile, 82/1 at Old Trafford

Have to say, England look like getting these runs. NZ will regret that collapse, could've put the game out of England's reach

England are going to win this easily.

A pretty pathetic capitulation by the Kiwis in the last few sessions.

I hope so.

I want this to go right down to the wire.....let's see one of those games where England need 3 runs to win with 1 wicket in hand.

Still a long way to go yet!

It is like chasing 122 and being 0/2

If England lose this from here, they'll have done very badly. To be honest, Strauss is looking so good that I wouldn't be surprised if they won by 7-8 wickets

even with some of the opposite extremes we have seen from the England team recently, it is our to lose now.
What a turnaround! 294 is still quite hard and they have batted superbly so far. Not very often 300 is chased in the 4th innings. it's about time we chased down a decent target anyway, been years really, funnily enough since New Zealand 4 years ago is it?

England are running away with this...... New Zealand put a shameful show in the second innings :22: ...... They are far from a 'good' Test side :boom: .

The only decent players at the moment are the top 3 and Broad though, and 2 of them are out already. so still a fair way to go.

What I would like to see is someone in the middle order get a really good fifty. Pietersen is getting away with it for now because of his century in Napier, a brilliant inning to be fair, and Ambrose is barely still living on his century as well. but the others have no excuse and should expect to be replaced after this match if their dire form continues.

26 off 80

6* off 30

Why so slow from KP? He's best to watch when he's on the attack
