Since the takeover of Paris Saint-Germain by the Qatari government’s investment fund in 2011, the club have failed to win the Ligue 1 title only three times. The first was in their maiden season under their new ownership, when a dogged Montpellier took advantage of the tumult caused by the mid-season dismissal of Antoine Kombouaré to bring home an unlikely first top-flight title. Monaco in 2017 and Lille in 2021 similarly seemed to catch lightning in a bottle, riding the play of clever experienced strikers (Radamel Falcao, Burak Yilmaz) working in tandem with unheralded youngsters (Kylian Mbappé, Jonathan David) to edge their more moneyed competitors.

Otherwise, as the jibe so often goes, Ligue 1 has been a “one-team league”, albeit not to the level of the Bundesliga or Serie A, given the recent hegemony of Bayern Munich and Juventus. PSG won the last title at a canter, keeping Marseille at arm’s length even as the spectre of Mbappé’s potential departure and (another) galling Champions League exit provided no shortage of distractions.

But now, with another season getting under way in France on Friday, it feels ironclad that PSG will again win the title after appointing the former Lille manager Christophe Galtier and the sporting director Luís Campos who helped to mastermind the past two occasions in which they failed to finish top. Campos played a role in constructing not only that vibrant Monaco side but also Lille’s champions, unearthing unheralded gems such as Reinildo Mandava and Sven Botman on the heels of the impressive development of Fabinho and Bernardo Silva in the principality.

“If you can’t beat them, join them” is perhaps better rendered as “if you can’t beat them, buy them” in PSG’s case in acquiring Galtier and Campos. PSG were also heartened by Mbappé’s decision to extend his contract. The Paris-born player will be joined by what appears to be a canny trio of young signings in Vitinha, Hugo Ekitiké and Nordi Mukiele, a deliberate move away from adding more experienced players such as Sergio Ramos and Georginio Wijnaldum. The plan is to form a team that can grow and mature with Mbappé, hopefully convincing him to further continue his adventure in the capital.

PSG should benefit from Galtier’s proclivity for balancing defensive rigour with a decent level of attacking play, and they appear to have addressed issues of depth, with Ekitiké and Mukiele able to operate across multiple positions. Easily caught on the counter at times last season under Mauricio Pochettino, PSG may not evince a level of PlayStation football going forward under Galtier but they appear far better equipped for success in Europe.

The intrigue remains high over who will succeed in the battle for European places. As many as eight clubs – Monaco, Marseille, Lyon, Rennes, Nice, Strasbourg, Lille and Lens – could have designs on Europe, and others may be a little uneasy about the league trimming to 18 teams after the season. Four teams will be relegated, and there may be a stronger emphasis than ever on attacking play, if the transfer market is anything to go by.

As things stand, Monaco and Lyon are the leading contenders for the top three. The loss of Aurélien Tchouaméni is big for the Monegasques but the young Belgian Eliot Matazo has impressed in a holding role through pre-season and the arrivals of Breel Embolo and Takumi Minamino mean they will be more dangerous after nine wins in their final 10 matches to come third last season.

Lyon are trying to improve through a mix of old and new. The returning Alexandre Lacazette, who has looked particularly sharp in pre-season, and a not-yet-fit Corentin Tolisso have the club’s DNA, no small matter for a team who have always underscored the importance of their academy. The new majority shareholder, John Textor, an American who has stakes in Crystal Palace and the Brazilian side Botafogo, has shown a willingness to smartly invest . He has also added the experienced Argentinian left-back Nicolás Tagliafico to replace Emerson, and the former Caen youngster Johann Lepenant gives decent depth. Questions remain over the futures of Lucas Paquetá, the highly touted youngster Rayan Cherki and Houssem Aouar but not having to juggle European football should see Les Gones in good stead.

It is likely to be the opposite for Marseille, who must juggle a Champions League return with a squad that appears decidedly weaker at the time of writing. The departures of William Saliba, Boubacar Kamara and Luan Peres have stripped much of the defensive solidity that became a hallmark in the second half of the season.

That trio were also versatile, allowing Jorge Sampaoli to experiment tactically – something his replacement, Igor Tudor, seems unwilling to do. OM have made some canny signings – Jonathan Clauss was perhaps the league’s best right-back last season, despite what fans of Achraf Hakimi would have you believe, and Nuno Tavares is an upgrade on Sead Kolasinac at left-back – but it is difficult to see Marseille having as successful of a season as they did last year under Sampaoli, when they also reached the Europa Conference League semi-finals.

Rennes were frustrated to have been pipped to third by Monaco but are rolling the dice with Bruno Génésio’s attack-minded play once more, having brought in the promising young Belgian Arthur Theate and Tottenham’s Joe Rodon to shore up a defence that struggled at times in the few matches for which Nayef Aguerd was absent. However, with the Moroccan having decamped for West Ham and the steely midfielder Jonas Martin also gone, questions remain about the Bretons’ solidity.

Nice will play with largely the same side that also sputtered at end of the season, but with Lucien Favre back at the helm. Kasper Schmeichel is probably a downgrade from the underrated Walter Benítez in goal, and Dante is another year older. Even with the promising Mattia Viti arriving from Italy, more will be required from an attack that struggled at times, despite an abundance of talent. Favre is capable of overseeing that as a coach – evidenced by his previous spell at the club – but there are more than a few questions about cohesion here, to say nothing of contending with the Conference League.

Lille have looked to quietly be growing in strength under Paulo Fonseca. Their attack looks more potent with a fully fit Rémy Cabella and the new signing Mohamed Bayo, and with no European football they could be a dark horse for the top six.

Nearly men Lens and Strasbourg have more or less held serve, with Jimmy Cabot arriving as Clauss’s replacement on the wing for Lens and a pair of promising if unproven strikers joining in Adam Buksa and Loïs Openda. Strasbourg may yet lose the influential Ludovic Ajorque, but Hwang Ui-jo as his rumoured replacement would be only a slight downgrade. Expect both sides to be dangerous in any given match but to fall slightly short.

In terms of the relegation battle, a well-constructed Toulouse look a far cry from the team that circled the drain for several years before relegation, and are unlikely to go back down. Fellow promoted sides Auxerre and Ajaccio are not on the same level, though, and it is hard to see their summer parsimony resulting in anything other than the drop. Likewise for Clermont – who will struggle without Bayo – and Angers, Gérald Baticle’s side having lost Angelo Fulgini, Cabot, Mohamed-Ali Cho and a raft of veterans who had been there since promotion seven years ago.

As to sides who could surprise, Montpellier have added Wahbi Khazri and Arnaud Nordin from relegated Saint-Étienne, adding a bit more sparkle to their attack. Reims’ signing of Japan’s Junya Ito could see the former Genk player turn more than a few heads.

With the stakes higher than ever in France, and several teams having invested heavily to avoid the drop or jockey for what appears to be a fairly open race for Europe, this season looks to be as exciting as ever for Ligue 1’s “other” 19 teams.

Real Madrid opened their La Liga title defence with a hard-fought victory as they came from a goal down to beat Almeria.

Former Manchester United striker Largie Ramazani fired Almeria into a shock lead after just six minutes.

Home goalkeeper Fernando Martinez made a series of saves to frustrate Real before Lucaz Vazquez levelled.

David Alaba struck the winner from a free-kick with his first touch after coming off the bench.

Having beaten Eintracht Frankfurt in Wednesday's Uefa Super Cup, Real came into the new La Liga season in confident mood.

But they were left stunned when Belgian forward Ramazani, who left United in 2020 after coming through their youth ranks, beat the offside trap and fired past Thibaut Courtois to put Almeria ahead.

Thwarted by Fernando on several occasions, Real thought they had levelled just before the break, but Vazquez's well-taken volley was chalked off for offside.

Vazquez got his goal, however, in the 61st minute when the ball fell kindly to him after a burst of pace from the lively Vinicius Jr.

With 15 minutes remaining, Real boss Carlo Ancelotti turned to Alaba and the former Bayern Munich player smashed a brilliant left-footed free-kick past Fernando within seconds of replacing Ferland Mendy.

Almeria had the chance to equalise three minutes into added time when Curro Sanchez's free-kick found Rodrigo Ely, but the Brazilian defender headed straight at Courtois.

Borussia Dortmund surrendered a two-goal lead in added time to lose to visitors Werder Bremen.

Julian Brandt and Raphael Guerreiro put the home side in cruise control as the game approached 90 minutes.

However, former Derby youngster Lee Buchanan pulled a goal back before Niklas Schmidt headed the equaliser.

In the final seconds, Scotland forward Oliver Burke rode two challenges then fired home a sensational winner.

Dortmund had beaten Bayer Leverkusen and Freiburg in their opening two games and were only second behind leaders Bayern on goal difference.

They drop to sixth while Bayern will return to the top if they take anything from their trip to Bochum on Sunday.

Luka Modric scored a wonderful goal as defending champions Real Madrid beat Celta Vigo in La Liga.

Karim Benzema gave Real the lead but Iago Aspas equalised - both penalties following handballs - before Modric found the top corner from 25 yards from David Alaba's pass.

The Croatia midfielder, 36, then played a through ball to Vinicius Jr, who raced away and rounded goalkeeper Agustin Marchesin before slotting in.

Federico Valverde drilled in a fourth.

Real won a second penalty late on but Eden Hazard, who had only been on the pitch for a few minutes, saw his spot-kick saved by Marchesin. The former Chelsea player has only scored four goals in 50 La Liga appearances.

Madrid have won all three of their games this season, beating Eintracht Frankfurt in the Uefa Super Cup and Almeria on the opening day of La Liga.

Modric - who was applauded by the home fans when he was replaced by Dani Ceballos - has scored at least one league goal - in Bosnia, Croatia, England and Spain - every season since 2003-04.

Some 18 of the former Tottenham playmaker's 33 La Liga goals have been scored outside the box.

Real Madrid left Casemiro out with the Brazil midfielder, 30, close to a £70m move to Manchester United.

Young France midfielders Eduardo Camavinga and new signing Aurelien Tchouameni played alongside Modric in the middle of the park.

Carlo Ancelotti's side last lost a La Liga game to a team not from Madrid or Barcelona in January 2021.

Georginio Wijnaldum: Roma midfielder a World Cup doubt for Netherlands after breaking leg

Roma midfielder Georginio Wijnaldum broke his leg in training on Sunday, putting his participation at the World Cup in Qatar in doubt.

The Netherlands midfielder, 31, joined Roma on loan from Paris St-Germain two weeks ago.

The Serie A club said medical tests had "confirmed the presence of a fracture to the tibia in his right leg".

Roma did not say how long Wijnaldum, a Premier League and Champions League winner with Liverpool, would be out.

Rotterdam-born Wijnaldum, who has 86 caps for the Netherlands and also spent a season at Newcastle United, will "undergo further assessments in the coming days".

The Dutch are in Group A at the World Cup, which begins on 20 November, along with Senegal, Ecuador and hosts Qatar.

Karim Benzema scored two late goals as La Liga champions Real Madrid beat Espanyol 3-1 in a thrilling finale.

Paris St Germain dropped their first points of the Ligue 1 season as they came from behind to draw 1-1 at home with Monaco on Sunday.

Borussia Monchengladbach goalkeeper Yann Sommer made 19 saves - a Bundesliga record - but Bayern Munich's Leroy Sane finally beat him in an enthralling 1-1 draw.

England striker Tammy Abraham scored as Roma came from behind to draw 1-1 with Juventus in Serie A.

Former Chelsea striker Timo Werner scored a first-half hat-trick and assisted another goal as RB Leipzig thrashed Teutonia Ottensen in the first round of the German Cup.

Werner was substituted in the 57th minute as Leipzig went on to beat the fourth-tier side 8-0.

He re-joined RB Leipzig this summer from Chelsea, who lost to Southampton in the Premier League on Tuesday.

Germany international Werner has four goals and two assists in four games.

Elsewhere, England striker Tammy Abraham got an assist as Paulo Dybala netted twice in a 3-0 Serie A victory for Roma over Monza.

Brazilian defender Roger Ibanez completed the scoring for Jose Mourinho's side as they maintained their unbeaten start to the season.

They moved a point clear of Inter Milan at the top of the table despite Simone Inzaghi's side picking up their third win of the season over Cremonese on the same night.

Joaquin Correa, Nicola Barella and Lautaro Martinez scored for Inter, before David Okereke got one back for the visitors in the 90th minute.

Meanwhile, rivals AC Milan sit a point behind Inter after they were held to a goalless draw at Sassuolo.

Roma boss Jose Mourinho praised England striker Tammy Abraham after his side moved to the top of the Serie A table with a 3-0 win over Monza on Tuesday.

Summer signing Paulo Dybala scored his first two goals for the club before Roger Ibanez added a third, but it was Abraham who won the manager's acclaim.

"With your permission, I will talk about someone that no-one is talking about tonight: Tammy Abraham," Mourinho told reporters after the game.

"Today he was my Tammy."

Mourinho added: "He played how I wanted him too. He won everything, he kept the ball, he provided an outlet, he won the first ball and he gave us an option in behind to push them back.

"We always talk about strikers when they score and obviously tonight was Paulo's night, but Tammy was amazing."

Argentina forward Dybala joined Mourinho's side on a free transfer in July after the end of his contract with Juventus. He was taken off with 25 minutes remaining but Mourinho says he has to manage the forward after his limited match experience last season.

The Roma boss added: "When he came off he said to me, 'Boss, if I carried on I would have got my third.' I told him: 'Get it against Udinese instead.'

Paris St-Germain maintained their unbeaten start to the Ligue 1 season under new boss Christophe Galtier with a comfortable 3-0 victory at Toulouse.

Paris St-Germain, Milan, Juventus and Internazionale are among eight clubs who have agreed settlements with Uefa after failing to comply with break-even requirements last season. The eight clubs have agreed to fines totalling €172m (£149m), of which €26m must be paid in full, with the balance conditional on compliance with targets laid out in their respective settlement agreements.

PSG, Monaco, Marseille, Milan, Juventus and Besiktas have reached settlements covering the next three years, while Inter and Roma agreed four-year settlements, Uefa said.

Of the eight, PSG are liable for the biggest fine of €65m (£56m), of which €10m must be paid in full, followed by Roma, who are liable for a penalty of €35m, €5m of which must be paid in full.

Uefa announced new sustainability regulations this year to replace the previous financial fair play (FFP) system. The new stability requirements, known as the football earnings rule, came into effect from 1 June. Under the new rules, acceptable losses have doubled from €30m to €60m over three years.

The clubs that have agreed a three-year settlement have until the end of the 2025-26 season to comply with the new Uefa sustainability rules, failing which they can be held liable for the full amount of the fines set by Uefa.

Failure to comply could also result in the clubs being banned from Uefa competition in the 2024-25 and 2025-26 seasons, as well as being banned from registering new players in the 2026-27 season. Inter and Roma have one additional season to comply with the new rules.

Nineteen other clubs, including Manchester City, Chelsea, West Ham, Leicester and Barcelona avoided punishment because of the emergency relief measures Uefa instituted during the pandemic or because they had benefited from historically positive break-even results.

Uefa said it had asked these 19 clubs for more financial information and told them they would be monitored closely because neither Covid-related deductions nor historical finances would be considered from the next financial year.

Bayern Munich missed the chance to return to the top of the Bundesliga after being held to a draw by Union Berlin.

Sheraldo Becker gave the home side a shock lead when he volleyed Christopher Tremmel's free-kick into the far corner.

But Joshua Kimmich equalised three minutes later with a crisp finish from the edge of the box.

The draw leaves Bayern in third place in the Bundesliga table.

Borussia Dortmund had claimed top spot on Friday with a 1-0 victory over Hoffenheim, before a 3-2 win at Bayer Leverkusen saw Freiburg move above Dortmund into first place on Saturday.

Frederik Ronnow denied Jamal Musiala with an excellent save in the first half, but only a strong one-handed stop from Manuel Neuer prevented Bayern from falling behind again in the closing stages.

Julian Nagelsmann's side open their Champions League campaign with a trip to Inter Milan on Wednesday.

Barcelona moved up to second in La Liga after maintaining their unbeaten start to the season with victory at Sevilla.

Kylian Mbappe scored twice from Lionel Messi passes as Paris St-Germain saw off ten-man Nantes in Ligue 1.

Rafael Leao scored twice as champions AC Milan came from a goal down to beat Inter Milan in a thrilling derby.

Real Madrid continued their perfect start to the new La Liga season by inflicting a first league defeat of the campaign on Real Betis.

Bayern Munich missed the chance to return to the top of the Bundesliga after being held to a draw by Union Berlin.

Barcelona's La Liga game at Cadiz was halted for about 50 minutes when a fan had a medical emergency.

The visitors were leading 2-0 with fewer than 10 minutes remaining when the incident happened.

Cadiz goalkeeper Jeremias Ledesma ran across the pitch with a medical kit and threw it into the stands before the players were taken off.

The fan was taken to hospital by ambulance and Barca boss Xavi said: "We all agreed to stop [the game]."

He added: "This sort of thing goes beyond football, we're talking about a human life here.

"Fortunately they managed to save him."

There were two further goals when play resumed as Barca moved top of the table with a fourth successive league win.

Frenkie de Jong swept in the opener for Barca while Robert Lewandowski slid in the visitors' second shortly after his introduction as a substitute.

The Poland forward has now scored nine goals in six appearances since his summer move from Bayern Munich.

Fellow substitute Ansu Fati added a third while France forward Ousmane Dembele rounded off the scoring late on.

Xavi's side now sit a point above champions Real Madrid, who play Mallorca on Sunday (13:00 BST).

Barcelona have scored 15 times and conceded just once since their opening-day stalemate Rayo Vallecano.

That was a good gesture.

Human life is more important than a game.

Bayern Munich fell to a surprise first defeat of the season at Augsburg as they missed the opportunity to go top of the Bundesliga.

Mergim Berisha scored the only goal of the game as the hosts recorded their first home win of the season.

Bayern have now failed to win their last four matches in the German top flight and may drop out of the top four after Sunday's fixtures.

Borussia Dortmund top the table after a 1-0 win over local rivals Schalke.

Substitute Youssoufa Moukoko, 17, headed the winner for Edin Terzic's side to become the youngest player to have scored in the fixture.

Union Berlin, who currently sit second, could reclaim top spot if they beat Wolfsburg on Sunday (14:30 BST), while third-placed Freiburg travel to Hoffenheim.

Newly promoted Monza claimed the first Serie A victory in their history by beating giants Juventus to deepen boss Massimiliano Allegri's worries.

Christian Gytkjaer scored the winning goal in the second half for Monza's first win of the season to move off the bottom of the table.

Juventus had Angel di Maria sent off in the first half, the 10th dismissal of the Argentine's career.

Monza were promoted to Serie A for the first time last season.

The club, owned by former Italy Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi, missed out on automatic promotion but emerged through the play-offs.

Centre-back Pablo Mari is on loan from Arsenal, with Italy internationals Matteo Pessina and Stefano Sensi also in their side.

Samuele Birindelli, the son of former Juve defender Alessandro Birindelli, came on for Monza with five minutes remaining.

Juventus, meanwhile, have had a poor start to the season and manager Allegri's position is under threat.

The side lie eighth in Serie A, having won just twice in seven games, and have also lost both of their Champions League games so far.

Defender Jean-Clair Todibo received the quickest red card in Ligue 1 history by getting sent off just nine seconds into Nice's home defeat by Angers.

Ex-Barcelona centre-half Todibo was adjudged to be the last man for a trip and was immediately dismissed.

Former Tottenham midfielder Nabil Bentaleb scored the winner goal for Angers in the first half.

The visitors also finished with 10 men after ex-Southampton winger Sofiane Boufal received two yellow cards.

Englishman Ross Barkley appeared for the hosts in the second half, but Wales international Aaron Ramsey missed out through injury.

Scores for 17th September

La Liga has condemned "hate speech" and says it will work with authorities after reports of racist chanting towards Real Madrid's Vinicius Junior.

Real won at Atletico Madrid on Sunday and some opposing fans allegedly sang racist songs when entering the ground.

It comes after Vinicius, 22, said "the happiness of a black Brazilian in Europe" was behind recent criticism.

"We denounce all incidents inside and outside stadiums," said a La Liga spokesperson.

"We work with clubs to keep our football friendly and enjoyable."

The spokesperson added: "Hate speech has no place in La Liga and we always work with the clubs and the authorities to identify and bring to justice any such case."

Vinicius' celebration after scoring, in which he dances, have drawn comments from pundits in Spain recently.

Agent Pedro Bravo said during a Spanish television discussion on Vinicius that "in Spain, you have to respect rivals and stop playing the monkey", leading to accusations of racism. He has since apologised.

Brazil international Vinicius, who has scored five goals in eight games for the European champions so far this season, listed other stars who danced in their celebrations in a statement on Friday.

"Weeks ago, some people started to criticise my dancing. But the dancing is not mine alone," he said.

"They belong to Ronaldinho, Neymar, [Lucas] Paqueta, [Antoine] Griezmann, Joao Felix, Matheus Cunha... Brazilian funk singers and samba dancers, Latin reggaeton singers, Black Americans. They are dances to celebrate the cultural diversity of the world.

"They say that happiness bothers. The happiness of a Black Brazilian being successful in Europe bothers much more. But my will to win, my smile and the sparkle in my eyes are much bigger than that."

Vinicius was supported by several Brazilian football stars on social media, including Pele and Neymar, while Real Madrid also released a statement condemning the pundit's comments on Friday.

The criticism and racism did not stop Vinicius and his Brazilian team-mate Rodrygo dancing after the latter scored the opening goal at Wanda Metropolitano as Real Madrid won 2-1.

Jamal Musiala a player with great potential. Only 19, yet on current form one of the best players in Europe and continues to influence games at one of the biggest clubs in the world in Bayern.

Sergio Ramos was sent off for the 28th time in his career as Paris St-Germain were held by Reims.

The former Real Madrid defender was shown two yellow cards in quick succession for arguing with the referee shortly before half-time.

PSG, without the injured Lionel Messi, needed a good save from Gianluigi Donnarumma to deny Arber Zeneli.

But Neymar missed a golden chance to win it for PSG when he ran through but somehow shot wide.

Things got feisty towards the end as the visitors appeared to get frustrated, with Neymar and Kylian Mbappe both booked for fouls.

It is only the second time this season the Ligue 1 leaders, who are three points ahead of second-placed Marseille, have dropped points.

Reims, who have won just once in 10 games so far this season, are 14th.

Borussia Dortmund came from 2-0 down to draw with Bayern Munich and stop their rivals going top of the Bundesliga in a thrilling match at Signal Iduna Park.

Anthony Modeste headed in a 94th-minute leveller after Bayern's Kingsley Coman had been shown a red card earlier in stoppage time.

Youssoufa Moukoko had given Dortmund hope with a 74th-minute strike.

Earlier Bayern teenager Jamal Musiala set up goals for Leon Goretzka and Leroy Sane either side of half-time.

Second-half substitute Coman was shown a yellow card for a late sliding tackle on Jude Bellingham and was sent off in stoppage time for a cynical foul on Karim Adeyemi.

With less than 20 minutes remaining Bayern looked to be cruising to a dominant victory with Sadio Mane and Germany international Musiala both having second-half chances.

But Dortmund rallied, led by England teenager Bellingham who was given the captain's armband at half-time when regular skipper Matt Hummels was substituted.

The draw meant the hosts stayed fourth in the table, level on points with Bayern in third.

Clinical Real Madrid beat Barcelona in the 250th El Clasico to go top of La Liga and inflict their rivals' first league defeat of the season.

Karim Benzema scored Real's opener after Vinicius Jr's shot had been saved into his path by Marc-Andre ter Stegen.

Federico Valverde doubled the champions' lead before half-time with a lovely 20-yard drive.

Ferran Torres pulled one back from Robert Lewandowski's flick-on but Rodrygo settled it with a penalty.

The rivals started the day with seven wins and a draw from their opening eight games - but Real go three points clear now as they remain unbeaten.

This was a first away La Liga defeat in almost a year in charge of Barcelona for Xavi.

A big loss for Xavi?

Barcelona looked as if they were on their way back to the top of Spanish football towards the end of last season when they beat Real 4-0 at the Bernabeu.

They gambled in the summer by spending a lot of their future earnings on signings. The club hoped it would lead to instant success, which would in turn lead to more earnings.

But they face early elimination from the Champions League - and showed again how they are still behind their old rivals.

This is only their first defeat of the season - and they are still within three points of top spot in La Liga. But this is El Clasico - a game managers dare not lose.

Something for Xavi to think about is how they looked better after bringing on youngsters in Ferran Torres, Gavi and Ansu Fati.

Barca appeared down and out at 2-0 before those introductions. Fati's cross was flicked into the path of Torres, who scored his second Clasico goal at the Bernabeu of the year.

Fati then hit an acrobatic volley which went just wide during their brief hope of grabbing a point - before Rodrygo settled the game.

Benzema wins the battle of the strikers
Benzema led Real Madrid to the Champions League and La Liga titles last season in a campaign which is likely to win him the Ballon d'Or.

He has had a slow scoring start to this season though. His opener, to cap off a swift counter-attack, was only his fourth La Liga goal of the season.

The France international thought he had a fifth in the second half with a fine finish from outside the box - but he had not heard the whistle going for an offside as he celebrated with the home fans.

One man in flying form before Sunday's game was Barcelona's Robert Lewandowski, who like Benzema is 34.

The two-time Best Fifa Men's Player netted nine goals in his first eight games in La Liga following a summer move from Bayern Munich.

But he lacked the clinical finishing of Benzema this time out. Most notably he slid a cross over an empty net from close range and drilled a free-kick straight into the wall.

The Pole will score plenty more goals this season but for now Benzema showed he is still the top striker in El Clasico.

BREAKING: The entire Juventus board, including president Andrea Agnelli, has resigned.

Uefa has opened an investigation into Juventus for potential breaches of its club licensing and financial fair play regulations.

In August, Uefa reached a settlement with Juve on the basis of financial information for between 2018 and 2022, and the club's entire board resigned last month over accounting issues.

Reuters reported on Thursday that Italian prosecutors have requested that former Juve chairman Andrea Agnelli, 11 others and the club itself stand trial over allegations of false accounting.

Karim Benzema scored twice in the final seven minutes to earn Real Madrid a 2-0 win at Real Valladolid.

The late strikes by the Ballon d'Or winner lift Madrid top of La Liga, a point clear of Barcelona.

Benzema, who missed the World Cup through injury, put Real ahead with an 83rd-minute penalty after a highly disputed handball decision.

He wrapped up the win six minutes later with a calm finish from Eduardo Camavinga's pass.

This was Real's first game since the World Cup, with losing French finalists Aurelien Tchouameni and Camavinga on the bench.

Luka Modric started however after leading Croatia to third place as was Benzema, the 35-year-old leading the line after missing out on Qatar having suffered a thigh injury the day before the start of the tournament.

Both teams had several chances to open the scoring, but superb goalkeeping from Valladolid's Jordi Masip and Real's Thibaut Courtois kept the game goalless until the final few minutes.

Real were awarded a penalty when Javi Sanchez was judged to have handled the ball. The decision sent the home team into a frenzy and striker Sergio Leon was sent off for dissent.

Benzema shrugged off the distraction and delay, and converted the penalty with ease.

Then, in the 89th minute, Benzema doubled the visitors' lead after being left unmarked to fire a well-placed shot home from just inside the box .

Real retake the league lead from Barcelona, who have a game in hand and host Espanyol on Saturday.

Barcelona were held to a draw by local rivals Espanyol in a chaotic New Year's Eve derby at the Nou Camp.

Marcos Alonso gave Barca the lead after seven minutes, however they were pegged back by a Joselu penalty.

Barcelona full-back Jordi Alba received a second yellow card in the final minutes, while Vinicius Souza was also dismissed for the visitors.

The referee also sent off Espanyol's Leandro Cabrera, although that was overturned by VAR.

Despite failing to win, Barcelona returned to the top of La Liga on goal difference ahead of Real Madrid, who beat Real Valladolid 2-0 on Friday.

On Saturday, Alonso nodded home from close range following a flick by defensive partner Andreas Christensen, but Barcelona missed several chances to extend their advantage.

They were made to pay with 17 minutes remaining when Alonso clipped Joselu in the penalty area, with the ex-Stoke and Newcastle striker picking himself up to slot the spot-kick down the middle.

Referee Antonio Mateu Lahoz - who officiated the chaotic Argentina versus Netherlands quarter-final at the 2022 World Cup - handed out a total of 16 yellow cards and two reds in this game.

Alba got his second booking for complaining about the location of the defensive wall from a free-kick.

Souza was dismissed for a second yellow after a foul on Robert Lewandowski, while Cabrera was initially given a straight red for appearing to kick the Barca striker immediately afterwards - although that was overturned on video review.

Along with 15 yellows for players, Barcelona manager Xavi was also booked for complaining about one of Lahoz's decisions.

Paris St-Germain lost for the first time since March as they were beaten 3-1 by in-form Lens in Ligue 1.

Second-placed Lens have lost only once in 17 Ligue 1 games this season and are now just four points behind Christophe Galtier's star-studded league leaders.

Lois Openda scored one goal and set up another for Franck Haise's side.

PSG were without Neymar, who was suspended after being sent off on Wednesday, and Lionel Messi, who continues his post-World Cup recovery.

The hosts led after five minutes when Przemyslaw Frankowski volleyed into an empty net after a rebound off Italy goalkeeper Gianluigi Donnarumma.

Hugo Ekitike quickly equalised for PSG but Openda beat defender Marquinhos and fired past Donnarumma into the bottom corner to give Lens the lead again in the 28th minute.

Alexis Claude-Maurice added a third two minutes into the second half and - despite Kylian Mbappe playing the full game - the club from northern France held on for a notable victory.

PSG's last defeat was a 3-0 loss to Monaco on 20 March, 10 days after they lost in the Champions League to Real Madrid.

Real Madrid narrowly beat fourth-tier Cacereno to move into the last 16 of the Copa del Rey.

Karim Benzema and Vinicius Jr were both rested as boss Carlo Ancelotti made nine changes from Friday's La Liga win over Real Valladolid.

And they were reliant on Rodrygo's second-half goal to progress, with the former Santos forward honouring Brazil great Pele in his goal celebration.

Real are hoping to win the competition for the first time since 2014.

Defending champions AC Milan resumed their Serie campaign with a 2-1 win at Salernitana to temporarily close the gap to leaders Napoli to five points.

After a seven-week break for the World Cup and the festive season, Milan strengthened their place in second before Napoli's match against Inter Milan later on Wednesday.

Portugal international Rafael Leao opened the scoring after 10 minutes after rounding Mexico goalkeeper Guillermo Ochoa.

Sandro Tonali, who set up the opener, then drove home from inside the box to extend the lead with his second goal of the season.

Salernitana's Federico Bonazzoli capitalised on Lassana Coulibaly's deep cross for a consolation goal late on.

Tonali said: "We were almost perfect because we could have scored one or two more goals to win more comfortably.

"We're aware of the importance of what we did last season, we'll defend the title to the last bead of sweat we'll leave on the pitch."

Bayern Munich's Moroccan defender Noussair Mazraoui is to take some time away from football to deal with inflammation of heart tissue after suffering from Covid-19.

According to the German club, the full-back, whose last game was for his country in the World Cup semi-final against France in December, had been suffering from the virus during the tournament in Qatar.

Indeed, Bayern have revealed the 25-year-old missed the quarter-final against Portugal because of Covid.

Subsequent tests by a team doctor revealed that Mazraoui's pericardium - a fibrous sac of tissue that surrounds the heart - had become inflamed.

Dele Alli: Besiktas look into cancelling loan contract of Everton midfielder

Turkish Super Lig club Besiktas are exploring the possibility of cancelling Dele Alli's contract five months into his season-long loan from Everton.

The midfielder, 26, has struggled to rediscover his form in Turkey, playing just nine games and scoring two goals.

Alli agreed a guaranteed £1.94m for the loan plus a maximum of £8,400 per game.

BBC Sport understands a major stumbling block is paying off the £1.14m remaining on the deal.

However, there is no recall option in the loan deal so if Besiktas want to terminate early, they would be liable for the entire loan fee and the remainder of Alli's wages for the season.

Alli played 11 times for Everton after joining from Tottenham last February but has failed to produce his best form and earned the last of his 37 England caps in 2017.

Last month, he was loudly jeered by Besiktas supporters when he was substituted after 30 minutes at 2-0 down in a cup tie against second-tier side Sanliurfaspor, as the Istanbul side hit back to win 4-2.

In November, boss Senol Gunes singled out Alli and has not been impressed by the Englishman saying he was performing "below expectations" having substituted him at half-time in the 5-2 victory over Umraniyespor.

Alli has not featured in the league since, but with injuries in midfield he could get the chance to start on Saturday against Kasimpasa.

Besiktas lie sixth in the table, 10 points adrift of leaders and bitter rivals Galatasaray.

One of the most dramatic falls from grace that I can remember in football. (or any sport.)

This guy was a quality player.

Now he will surely be contemplating packing in his career altogether. Just can’t get going at all.
