ICC Media Release: FAF DU PLESSIS SUSPENDED FOR ONE TEST AFTER SECOND MINOR OVER-RATE OFFENCE

South Africa captain Faf du Plessis has been suspended for one Test and fined 20 per cent of his match fees, while his players have been fined 10 per cent of their match fees, for maintaining a slow over-rate during South Africa’s nine-wicket victory over Pakistan in the Cape Town Test, which ended on Sunday.

David Boon of the Emirates Elite Panel of ICC Match Referees imposed the suspension on du Plessis after South Africa were ruled to be one over short after time allowances were taken into consideration.

In accordance with Article 2.22.1 of the ICC Code of Conduct for Players and Players Support Personnel, which relates to minor over-rate offences, players are fined 10 per cent of their match fees for every over their side fails to bowl in the allotted time, with the captain fined double that amount.

As du Plessis had previously been found guilty of a minor over-rate offence during the Centurion Test against India which ended on 17 January 2018, this offence constituted his second minor over-rate offence within a 12-month period.

The suspension means du Plessis will miss the third Test against Pakistan, which starts in Johannesburg on Friday, 11 January.

The charge was laid by on-field umpires Bruce Oxenford and Joel Wilson, and third umpire Sundaram Ravi.

Oh damn. We should have set 250 first game and we would have been on the way to a series win!! :(

Wow SA team which was already weak will now miss its captain. Surely Pakistan should win J'burg test now.

With AB retired, Amla in decline, QDK in terrible form, de Bruyn being a walking wicket, and now Faf being suspended, Pakistan have a fantastic chance at making the series 2-1. Though they still have their full bowling line up so it will be tough.

Faf suspended, Amla and Markram struggling with injuries :23:

I don't think Amla and Markram's injuries are serious though. They should be okay.

I genuinely think Pak had a golden opportunity to win a test series here, they have Royally screwed it up

how is SA weak they won a test series against india recently .if you have common excuse of ABD retirement than you guys have better player in virat kohli in that particular series so it equal for both side .Show some respect to team that your team lost not too far

Actually, ABDV was the main reason India lost the 1st test and series subsequently. He was standing tall when other batsman were falling apart. So yes, ABDV missing is not an excuse but a huge loss for SA.

Then with Faf being suspended, Amla in poor form, Ngidi injured and Morkel retired....don't think Pakistan will getba better chance to win a game in SA.

kohli was as good as abd so it equals it .SA bowling without morkel, nigidi still is one of the best and will beat any side at home 9 out of 10 time if you think without nigidi or morkel there bowling is weak then you are mistaken

Perfect analysis.

I’m not sure the Pakistanis realise just how weak the South African batting is.

They have missed a huge opportunity by arriving far too late and picking the wrong batsmen and too few fast bowlers.

Our fans are tainting India's win in Australia due to Smith and Warner suspensions. Well imagine if we lose the 3rd test with all these potential loses for SA.

It will be interesting to see which 1 of Markahm or Elgar will take his place as captain.

I'd rather be Faf in playing four fast bowlers to win the first two Tests, and accept the ban that comes with the inevitable slow over rate for the dead rubber Test.

Whats the point of this ban when tests get over in 3-4 days? Why should people in Jo'burg turn up if one of their main player's benched over a piteously nonsensical rule? Test cricket does itself no favors.

That is correct. Just win the series and then it doesn't matter if you get banned.

Doesnt matter if SA are missing players, our team will make newbies look like world beaters.

Couldn't agree more, I don't think even Pak fans here realise how close they were to a series victory...

This batting line up of SA is sub standard without ABDV, and having Amla out of form. It's like India playing without Kohli n Pujara.

And SA haven't done themselves any favours, they chose to bowl after winning the toss and boy if only Pak had close the first session at 50/3 instead of 50/5, they could have reached 250 and then SA had to bat last.

Even in first game, second innings, they screwed up from 100/1 and just lost it.

Injuries and ban to SA players is the only way our third grade overrated mediocre players can fluke a victory.

South Africa want respect for ‘positive’ cricket after Faf du Plessis banned

Faf du Plessis was banned for one Test after being found guilty, for the second time in a 12-month period, of captaining a team which maintained a slow over-rate.

The South African team management on Sunday called for flexibility in dealing with over-rate regulations following a one-match ban imposed on captain Faf du Plessis. He will miss the third and final Test against Pakistan starting in Johannesburg on Friday.

Du Plessis was banned for one Test after being found guilty, for the second time in a 12-month period, of captaining a team which maintained a slow over-rate.

South Africa opted for an all-pace attack in the second Test at Newlands and were found by match referee David Boon to be one over short of the required rate of 15 overs an hour after time allowances were taken into account.

Team media manager Lerato Malekutu said: “The team management and Faf have accepted and respect the decision as it falls under the International Cricket Council code of conduct.

“However they feel there could be a bit of flexibility given the four-pronged seam attack, taking 20 wickets within three days and playing a positive brand of cricket, rather than trying to delay or slow down the match.”

Du Plessis had scarcely finished extolling the virtues of Test cricket - and in particular the excitement generated by fast bowlers - before he found himself banned because of the time it takes those bowlers to deliver their overs.

South Africa won the match and clinched the series with almost two days to spare.

Du Plessis was previously found guilty of what the International Cricket Council, in announcing the ban, described as a “minor over-rate offence” after the second Test against India in Centurion in January last year.

In addition to the ban, Du Plessis was fined 20 percent of his match fee and the rest of the players were fined 10 percent of their fee.

In his post-match press conference, after South Africa completed a nine-wicket win on Sunday, Du Plessis said South Africa were determined not to “take our foot off the gas” and hinted that they may again pick four fast bowlers for the Johannesburg Test.

His absence is a big blow for the hosts. He has proven to be one of cricket’s most effective captains and his century in tricky batting conditions earned him the man of the match award and anchored what of late has been a fragile batting line-up.

Opening batsman Dean Elgar took over the captaincy on the last occasion Du Plessis missed a Test, in England in 2017 when Du Plessis flew home for the birth of his first child.

Elgar was given the job despite Hashim Amla, a former captain, being in the side.

Aiden Markram, Elgar’s opening partner, is seen as a future Test captain.

He was made captain of the one-day side in a home series against India last year but could not prevent India winning 4-1, while he struggled with his own batting form.

Both Amla and Markram were injured during the Newlands Test but are expected to be fit for Johannesburg.

Zubayr Hamza is a member of the current Test squad as a back-up batsman and is likely to win his first cap in place of Du Plessis.

Malekutu said the selectors would make a decision “in the next few days” regarding a replacement for Du Plessis in the squad.

I guess test cricket needs each and every player for its survival . Faf was the MOM in the previous match. And now him being suspended will deprive fans of good test match batting.

ICC can be lenient here as the match is completed in 4 days. And slow over rate did not extend the game time.

This could be a blessing in disguise for SA. I expect Zubair Hamza to slot it, this guy is a beast of a batsman who loves to bat, bat and bat. A South African Che Pu in the making....

Will be funny if Pakistan lose the 3rd Test against South Africa B after making fun of India. Some fans are in for a big reality check. :23:

They're always crying. Aren't they?

Honestly we should have beaten em in the first test match....if had a ruthless streak. Lets get it done in this last game.
