Manchester United midfielder Paul Pogba has opened up on his decision to convert to Islam.

The France international says he was ‘questioning himself over a lot of things’ before turning to Islam and becoming ‘more peaceful inside’.

Pogba, who recently made a pilgrimage to Mecca during the holy month of Ramadan, says that doing so has helped to make him become a better person.

Asked what being a Muslim meant to him in The Times' new Life Times podcast , Pogba said: "It's everything. That's what makes me thankful for everything.

"It made me change, realise things in life. I guess, maybe, it makes me more peaceful inside.

"It was a good change in my life because I wasn't born a Muslim, even if my mum was. I just grew up like that, respect for everyone.

"Islam is not the image that everyone sees – terrorism… What we hear in the media is really something else, it's something beautiful.

"You get to know it. Anybody can find that he feels connected with Islam."

When asked what brought about his change in religion the World Cup winner admitted he did so in order to help him focus.

Pogba continued: "It came because I have a lot of friends who are Muslim. We always talk.

"I was questioning myself in a lot of things, then I started doing my own research. I prayed once with my friends and I felt something different. I felt really good.

one of the pillars of Islam. It's something that you do.

"The meaning why you do it – you ask forgiveness and be thankful for everything you have, like my health and everything.

"It's really a religion that opened my mind and that makes me, maybe, a better person. You think more about the afterlife.

"This life has a test. Like when I'm with you, here. Even if you're not a Muslim, you are a normal human. You have a human relationship and respect you for who you are, what religion you are, what colour and everything.

"Islam is just this – respect of the humanity and everything."

Liverpool's Senegalese footballer is one of the best strikers worldwide The player, who was raised by a very poor family, spends his millionaire salary "feeding the poor"

Sadio Mané, 27, is one of the most successful strikers in international football and earns a millionaire salary in Liverpool. But Mané does not forget his past and the miserable conditions in which he was raised.

"Why would I want ten Ferraris, 20 diamond watches and two jet planes? What would that do for the world? I starved, I worked in the fields, I played barefoot, and I didn't go to school. Now I can help people. I prefer to build schools and give poor people food or clothing," the Liverpool player said in an interview with TeleDakar.

"I have built schools, a stadium; we provide clothes, shoes and food for people in extreme poverty. In addition, I give €70 per month to all people from a very poor Senegalese region in order to contribute to their family economy."

Mané's contract with Liverpool runs out in 2023. He is one of the most crucial players of the 2019 Champions League winners and, according to Transfermarkt, his market value is €120 million.

Former football star Fred Oumar Kanoute has raised $1m in an online crowdfunding campaign to build the first purpose-built mosque and cultural centre in Seville, Spain, in 700 years.

Kanoute, a French-born Muslim with a Malian background who previously played for Sevilla FC, started the campaign a year ago on LaunchGood, a crowdfunding platform focused on the global Muslim community.

"Thank you and may Allah reward for you for all those who participated in the campaign," Kanoute tweeted on Tuesday.

Kanoute 4 Seville Mosque will collect any additional funds raised by May 27. The estimated cost of the project is near 12 million euros ($13.1m).

Last year, Kanoute teamed up with the Seville Mosque Foundation (SMF).

"When I arrived there [Seville], it was very difficult to find a mosque. I had to ask people," Kanoute, who converted to Islam at 20, told Al Jazeera.

The Seville Muslim community was a "beautiful mix" including Spanish converts, second-generation Spanish Muslims, and people from Algeria, Morocco, Senegal and Malian background, he said.

Spain has an estimated two million Muslims, with around 30,000 living in Seville.

In 2007, Kanoute, a Spanish and UEFA cup winner, bought a musalla, or prayer space, in Seville that was on the verge of closing down after the contract of the premises was set to expire. Kanoute has previously described that space as a "temporary mosque".

The $1m project promises to be larger and more permanent.

"He is a very highly respected figure in Seville not only for his football but how he is as a person," Ibrahim Hernandez, the SMF director, told Al Jazeera.

"When you have someone like Oumar beside you, people want to hear your stories, they want to what about you, what you are doing," he added.

Aside from holding prayers, the mosque and cultural centre put on workshops for the local community on subjects such as childbirth, Andalusian arts and cooking.

A health clinic providing primary care for the local population is also planned, along with Arabic and Quran classes for children.

"A mosque for the youth, children and first, second and third-generation Muslims is so important for their identity, and understanding their [religion]," Abdiya Meddings, a British entrepreneur and Seville resident, told Al Jazeera.

Existing prayer spaces in Seville are usually small, she said, particularly those in basements.

"While most women don't go to [Friday prayers], female spaces in the musallas are still full," said Meddings, a former Quran teacher.

She used to teach children aged between five and 13, but the space was often too small for demand.

She said despite being a major tourist attraction for Muslims, in part due to its Islamic history dating back to the 8th century, it was difficult to find a place to pray in Seville.

"Here in Seville, the [prayer spaces] I know about are almost like hidden," she said. "Visitors come to Seville and they can't find it.

"It is important they [tourists] meet the Muslims of this city, and have a space to do that. Did Allah not create us in tribes so that we may know one another?"

Amid rising Islamophobia across Europe, the organisers of the Seville mosque project hope to tackle prejudice. Spain's far-right Vox party demanded the closure of what it described as "fundamentalist mosques" and called for the arrests and deportation of "extremist imams".

Hernandez said: "One of the intentions we have ... is to change the perception of people of Islam

"As soon as we come in close contact with people, we can help add to their knowledge of Islam."

Meddings said the mosque would help in "normalising Muslims" in the city.

"We can say look ... we are not trying to convert you, come meet us, meet our children, they are just like you, let’s celebrate Eid together."

Kopa Trophy 2024: Lamine Yamal among the nominees for Ballon d'Or's best young player award

It's not just the men's and women's Golden Balls that will be handed out the Ballon d'Or ceremony, as a swathe of new prizes have been added to the roster by co-organisers France Football and UEFA in recent times. One of those is the Kopa Trophy, which is awarded to the best player under the age of 21 from the previous season.

The 2023-24 campaign saw a number of youngsters thrive at the highest level, with some of the defining moments of the year provided by players who are only just making their way in the game.

Previous winners of the Kopa Trophy include Kylian Mbappe, Jude Bellingham, Pedri and Gavi, and with the award voted for by previous Ballon d'Or winners, it is regarded as one the biggest any young player can win.
We will have to wait until the ceremony in Paris on Monday, October 28 to find out who will walk away with the 2024 prize, but for now, here is the shortlist of nominees:

  • Pau Cubarsi (Barcelona)

Cubarsi has developed into one of Barcelona's most important defenders. He is just 17 but has 28 first-team appearances under his belt, as well as six caps for Spain. He is tied to Barca until 2027 and one has to think they will hope to extend that

  • Alejandro Garnacho (Manchester United)

United's next great hope. The Argentina international already has six caps, and he is just 20. In 2023/24, he developed into a key player under Erik ten Hag, scoring 10 goals in all competitions and becoming the club's undisputed first-choice left winge
  • Arda Guler (Real Madrid)

Guler lit up Euro 2024 with Turkiye as they embarked on an unlikely run to the quarter-finals. One goal and two assists in the tournament followed a season in which he scored six La Liga goals for Real Madrid in just 10 games. A dazzling technician, Guler has marked himself out as a playmaker to watc

  • Karim Konate (RB Salzburg)

Konate is fast becoming one of the most impressive strikers in Europe, and one has to think it is only a matter of time before he gets a big move. He scored 20 goals last season and also registered eight assists. Still 20, he is also an Ivory Coast regul

  • Kobbie Mainoo (Manchester United)

Mainoo has developed into one of United's best midfielders and was also integral to England's run to the Euro 2024 final, where he was perhaps unlucky to only walk away with a silver medal. He did win the FA Cup, though, and scored in the final against Manchester City
  • Joao Neves (PSG)

Neves emerged as one of the best deep-lying playmakers in Europe during his time at Benfica so it is little surprise he is now on the books of PSG. Last season, he was almost everpresent for the Portuguese club and played his way into his country's Euro 2024 squad, where he played

  • Savinho (Manchester City)

Now at City, Savinho lit up LaLiga while on loan with Girona last season. Nine goals and 10 assists convinced City to bring him in from sister club Troyes, and catapulted him into the Brazil XI. He now has seven caps for his c

  • Mathys Tel (Bayern Munich)

Not one to be overshadowed, Tel has remained something of a secret weapon for Bayern, perfectly complimenting the signing of Harry Kane. The 19-year-old contributed 16 goal involvements, and shows no sign of slowing

  • Lamine Yamal (Barcelona)

What more is there to say about Yamal? The Barcelona prodigy is 17 but he played a key role in Spain's Euro 2024 triumph, after contributing 16 goals for his club throughout the season. That he was able to score a wonder-goal against France in the semi-final and provide four assists throughout the tournament surely sets him apart as the favourite for the Kopa Trophy

  • Warren Zaire-Emery (PSG)

Zaire-Emery may have made his debut three seasons ago but he is still a teenager, and he is rapidly developing into a key player at PSG. Last season, he clocked 43 appearances and was included in France's Euro 2024 squad, although he did not pla
