A Hobart cricket spectator faces criminal prosecution and a three-year ban from matches across Australia after allegedly writing racist graffiti directed at South African player Hashim Amla at Bellerive Oval.

Officials were alerted to the incident on Saturday afternoon after Australia’s collapse for 85 runs on the first day of the second Test. The scrawl on a fence was removed within minutes.

“Tasmania Police identified the person of interest through CCTV and witnesses in the area,” a Cricket Australia spokesman said. “Cricket Australia has issued the person with a three-year ban from any Cricket Australia match, nationally.”

Police Inspector Doug Rossiter confirmed that a 25-year-old man from Longford in the state’s north will face court over the incident which happened just after 4pm (AEDT).

“The man left the venue shortly after but was apprehended and spoken to by police and will be proceeded against by summons for the offence,” he said. “The graffiti was promptly removed, having only been witnessed by a small number of nearby people.”

The senior police officer described the remark as “inexcusable and intolerable”.

One guy? Do we actually believe that such attitudes don't exist around the world?

Excellent work by Australia police guys tbh

The guy is an idiot.

There is often trouble with racism when South Africa tour, often from South Africans who moved to Australia to get away from black majority rule.

I don't think I'm breaking the site rules if I state what this guy wrote, because while it was a stupid, ignorant, bigoted comment, it didn't use a taboo word.

He basically used the same word that Dean Jones used to describe Amla - he called him a "terrorist".

I don't think it counts as a racial slur - it's just a dumb and manifestly incorrect case of a fool libelling an innocent man.

I do wonder how many people would be prosecuted during an India Pakistan game if the police did start listening

Hope he gets jail time for vandalism. He may have just ruined his future job prospects along with being unable to watch any cricket in his country. Hope it was worth it for him.

Amla meanwhile played a classy cameo against a very good bowling attack in difficult batting conditions.

Racism and bigotry will aleays exist so long as people don't go to jail or alternatively have a register where such people could be listed. Unfortunately the last part will never work because other racists will take them in.

Racism rocks SA tour to Australia

Racism has again sullied a South African tour of Australia, with Hashim Amla singled out for abuse this time.

Racism has again sullied a South African tour of Australia, with Hashim Amla singled out for abuse this time.

“Hashim Amla terrorist,” is the message believed to have been written on a fence near the South African team’s dugout at Bellerive Oval in Hobart on Saturday, the first day of the second test.

Cricket Australia (CA) said a 24-year-old man suspected of committing the act had been banned from attending any official match in Australia for three years and had been summoned to appear in court.

“Tasmania Police identified the person of interest through CCTV and witnesses in the area,” A CA spokesperson told reporters.

“CA takes a zero-tolerance approach to anti-social behaviour at any of our matches, which includes racial vilification.

"Our message to any fan attending a match is that if you display anti-social behaviour you will be removed and risk being banned from any cricket match across Australia, as well as police action being taken.”

The South Africans seem to have been satisfied that sufficient action has been taken.

“We have been informed that the man has been formally charged and has been handed a three-year ban from the stadium,” team manager Mohammed Moosajee said.

“From our point of view it is disappointing and disconcerting because this is not the first act of racial vilification we have received while touring Australia over the years.

“It is unacceptable. There is absolutely no place for racial stereotyping and such offensive acts in society, let alone in sport.

“We thank CA and the authorities for dealing with the matter in a swift, professional and stern way and for carrying out the full might of the law.”

The incident is the latest in a list of racial run-ins South Africans have had with Australians.

Former South African fast bowler Makhaya Ntini complained of racist abuse from the crowd at the WACA in Perth in December 2005.

In August 2006 former Australian batsman Dean Jones called Amla a “terrorist” while he thought he was off-air while working as a television commentator during South Africa’s tour to Sri Lanka. Jones was fired.

On South Africa’s last tour to Australia in 2012-13, former batsman Greg Ritchie made told Islamophobic and racist jokes in a speech at the Gabba to members of the Brisbane Cricket Ground.

Exposure of Ritchie’s racism in the press cost him his public speaking career.

The Ntini case was abuse from expat South Africans in the crowd.

The word used was one a racist South African would use rather than a racist Australian who would probably just copy words from American tv

I know quite a few people who have experienced racism in Australia. It is probably nothing like the UK, where there is hardly any racism.

Almost certainly true. As with every other country.

Edited.

I do believe UK is probably the least racist multicultural country. Speaking from personal experience as well as of those who permanently reside there.

Not even remotely close to Canada, particularly Greater Toronto. You can take it from someone living in 4 largest metro of those countries - Sydney, Greater London, Greater Toronto & New York.😜

Couldn't agree with you more!
