In a reshuffle of the Punjab cabinet, Fayyazul Hasan Chohan was on Monday removed as the provincial information minister, according to a notification issued by the Punjab government.

Meanwhile, Firdous Ashiq Awan, who previously served as the special assistant to the prime minister on information and broadcasting, was appointed as special assistant on information to Chief Minister Usman Buzdar.

Chohan, who previously held the colonies portfolio and additional charge of information, will now only hold the portfolio of the Punjab colonies minister, according to a notification issued by the Punjab Services and General Administration Department.

The move apparently came as a surprise to Chohan, who told Dawn when contacted that he did not know of any such development.

As part of the reshuffle, two other provincial ministers — Mehar Muhammad Aslam, who held the cooperatives portfolio, and Zawar Hussain Warraich, who held the prisons portfolio — were removed from their offices.

Awan was appointed as special assistant to the chief minister in place of Javaid Akhtar, another special assistant to Buzdar. "The chief minister, Punjab has also been pleased to assign the portfolio of Special Assistant to Chief Minister on Information to Ms. Firdous Ashiq Awan," another notification said.

In a tweet, Awan said she was "greatly humbled and honoured with the confidence that my great leader Imran Khan has shown in myself and my ability. I am also deeply thankful to the honourable CM Punjab for making me a part of his team."

"It is with great humility that I accept this tremendous responsibility. God willing, I will try and do my level best to change the information landscape of the Government of Punjab for the better to the best of my ability," she added.

This is the second time Chohan has been stripped of the information portfolio.

Notorious for his blustering style of speech, Chohan was removed as the provincial information minister in March last year after he faced heavy criticism on social media for his derogatory remarks directed towards the Hindu community.

However, he was reinstated as the Punjab information minister only months later, replacing Mian Aslam Iqbal, who had excused himself from the charge.

Firdous Ashiq Awan: PPP stalwart-turned-PTI spokesperson

Awan, who was a PPP stalwart before she joined the PTI in May 2017, was named the special assistant to Prime Minister Imran Khan on information and broadcasting as part of a major cabinet reshuffle in April 2019, eight months after the PTI chief took office.

However, the charge was taken away from her in April this year, and she was replaced as the SAPM by retired Lt Gen Asim Saleem Bajwa. Bajwa himself resigned from the post last month.

Awan, along with her husband, was a staunch supporter of the PPP until party co-chairman Asif Ali Zardari consolidated his control over the party.

She began her political career in 1990 with a focus on improving the healthcare system, and founded the Society for Health and Development and Exchange.

In 2002, she was elected to NA-286 on a reserved seat for women. In 2008, she successfully contested the NA-111 poll and was appointed the federal minister for population welfare. She later served as the information minister in the PPP government.

In 2013, she again contested the NA-111 poll but this time was unsuccessful. In 2015, she resigned as the PPP Punjab vice president before joining the PTI two years later.

She is like a bad penny, keeping popping back again and again.....

What foot in mouth did Chouhan do now?

If it weren't for Dr. Sania Nishtar, Moeed Yousuf, and a few others, I'd think the collective competency score of the PTI team would be in negative numbers.

Mindboggling how these people keep getting recycled from one post to the other and what not.

I enjoyed Chauhan's dabang speeches, with interestng quotes and shairi. He used to deliver good verbal phainty to oppositions.

I think it is a clever move by PTI. Mariam Nawaz, Mariam Auranzeb and Azma Bokhari are attacking Imran Khan every day and they think Dr. Awan is enough for all of them lol.

PTI needed a strong female representative to win over views of women.

There are lots of good and respectable people in the party such as Waleed Iqbal.

PTI has no decent and dignified people. They are all street urchins with gutter mouths and thus they keep getting recycled.

It is basically a competition between who can abuse the most.

Special Assistant to the Chief Minister of Punjab, Dr Firdous Ashiq Awan admitted that anti-state accusations levelled by politicians are done so most of the times because they "sell" to the Pakistani masses.

"The anti-India sentiment sells the most among our Pakistani masses," she admitted during her interview on a private news channel a few days ago.

"So you know the product that sells the most in shops, people sell those the most," she said, in reference to allegations politicians throw around at each other frequently about pushing the enemy's agenda.

"Is the government doing the same these days?" asked the anchor, cheekily.

"The government isn't the only one doing it, everyone is," she replied candidly. "You now in politics..." her voice trailed off before the anchor reminded her that such allegations are levelled usually by the PTI-led government and not the Opposition.

https://www.dawn.com/news/1621805/firdous-claims-people-twisting-narrative-on-sialkot-incident-with-assistant-commissioner-to-create-conflict

Special Assistant to Punjab Chief Minister (SACM) Dr Firdous Ashiq Awan claimed on Monday that people were "colouring" the Sialkot incident — in which she humiliated a female assistant commissioner in public during a visit to a Ramazan Bazaar — to "create conflict between government officials and public representatives".

Addressing a press conference in Lahore, Awan disclosed that she decided to approach Prime Minister Imran Khan and Punjab Chief Minister Usman Buzdar for advice on how to handle the controversy.

She said she visited the bazaar to "fight for the people and not for a specific family", adding that the people, who were "trying to colour the incident according to their own [interests]" instead of sympathising with the public in order to create a conflict between the bureaucracy and the government, would be disappointed.

Awan further said that the prime minister and chief minister had taken notice of the "chaos, substandard products and exploitation of people" in the Ramazan Bazaars.

Chief Minister Buzdar decided to hold an inquiry into the incident himself during a joint meeting with the provincial chief secretary and her and had also asked for a report, the SACM shared.

The chief minister also expressed displeasure at how people waited in long lines to buy sugar at Ramazan Bazaars, she added.

A day earlier, a video of Awan went viral in which she could be seen scolding AC Sonia Sadaf at a stall for 'poor quality of fruit'.

"Where were you when I reached there?" the SACM shouted. "Since there was a great rush of people, I could not make it to the front row to receive you," the AC replied but could not satisfy Awan.

"Have you come from the heavens. Is your life more precious (due to Covid factor) than that of those present here?" Awan shouted, giving the AC no time to reply.

For the young official, it was enough as she left the venue when the special assistant roared: "Who is the shameless person who has selected and posted you here? I will talk to him."

Speaking about the incident in her presser today, Awan said that it was previously decided that tents would be put up in Ramazan Bazaars to protect people from the sun, fans would be set up and sofas would be provided for elderly citizens.

"If fasting people are given one kilogramme of sugar after standing in line for the whole day in some districts, it means that the government's policy is not being followed," she observed.

"If government SOPs (standard operating procedures) are not followed somewhere, then public representatives are answerable to the public. Any person who takes their salary from the people's taxes is answerable to the public and is a guardian of people's rights."

Awan claimed that some media persons present during her visit "twisted the narrative and presented an angle" that she was angry at not being given protocol.

In an apparent reference to AC Sadaf, she said that any woman who chose difficult work had to prepare herself for it.

"The person who cannot bear the heat after coming out from [an air-conditioned room] should not join professions associated with public service. They should take easier paths. The person who takes the difficult path should have the courage and the strength to face difficulties."

The SACM said the people she was "fighting for" during her visit were not her relatives, from her constituency or from a specific political party. "We distributed sugar among them for free after purchasing from stalls so our government's goodwill could be continued and the public could be given relief," she added.

"The people who stand in line for sugar at Ramazan Bazaars are not [well-off]. The babus who are from royal families have no concern with those lines and they do not know the pain. That assessment can only be done by those who have to knock on doors for votes and the public has to make decisions according to their choice."

Awan alleged that there was "mismanagement" at the Ramazan Bazaar, adding that "facts were changed and miscommunicated" to the chief secretary.

"I went to some 14 Ramazan Bazaars before this in Lahore [and] Gujranwala. I have also visited utility stores and I have never seen such an attitude," she said referring to the assistant commissioner.

The SACM said that mistakes were only pointed out at places where problems existed but "adopting such an attitude in reaction to that is beyond understanding".

She said she had spoken up for the rights of civil servants after a "Rajkumari of a royal family" — apparently referring to PML-N's Rana Sanaullah — had called out the chief secretary and his entire team, threatened them and used bad language.

"I believe it is not anybody's right to scare and threaten anyone working for the rule of law," she added.

"We are important pillars of the government, we have to work in our circles of authority. The purpose of both (the bureaucracy and public representatives) is to give relief to the people," she said, adding that she saluted the officers who stood in the heat in Ramazan Bazaars to further the government's initiative.

They must release the complete video. Of course, any kind of violent behavior is uncalled for.

But (in ANY culture ALL around the world) you can't abuse someone's dead parents...

As they say: talk ****, get hit.

The man-child who got slapped seems like a typical Sindhi wadera still keeping slavery alive in 2021.

This crazy lady should be in a mental ward of a jail. Whatever the situation was , when she got physical, she crossed the redline .

I have met her long time ago, she came to my house to discuss a fundraising for hepatitis C awareness . She was in PPP government then , I think . I was not impressed with her basic mannerism and did not feel like working with her for any thing.

She should not be called a doctor either, she is an embarrassment for any profession.

Actually if you watch the actual show and the ‘fight clips’ you will realise that its the Firdous Aashiq Awan, who was abusing Mandokhel and his parents, just before she threw in the slap.

Now she has released a video statement telling the public that she acted in “self defence”. Not sure why she thinks that the general public is naive and dumb enough to believe what she’s saying.

Karachi police on Saturday refused to file a case against Chief Minister Punjab's side Firdous Ashiq Awan after PPP MNA Abdul Qadir Mandokhel's requested they do so.

Officials of the Saeedabad Police Station said they had received Mandokhel's request a few days ago, and after consulting with legal experts, they have decided not to file a case against Awan and have responded to Mandokhel accordingly.

"The incident took place in Islamabad and the case can only be registered there," police officials said.

In the plea filed with the police, Mandokhel had alleged that Awan used foul language, slapped him, and threatened him during a TV show

"A case of harassment, threats, and violence should be registered against Firdous Ashiq Awan," Mandokhel said.

Meanwhile, the PPP MNA in his own statement on Twitter, said that if Awan apologises, he will wholeheartedly accept it.

"If she thinks she will take legal action, I too have the right according to the law and Constitution to do so. Bar associations across Pakistan have condemned the move," he said.

Mandokhel said this is "not the first time Awan has done such a thing".

https://www.dawn.com/news/1630872/ppp-mna-mandokhel-seeks-court-direction-for-registration-of-fir-against-ptis-firdous-awan-for-slapping-him

A local court in Karachi issued on Tuesday notice to Special Assistant to Punjab Chief Minister on Information Firdous Ashiq Awan and police officials on PPP lawmaker Qadir Khan Mandokhel’s application seeking the registration of a first information report (FIR) against Awan for slapping him on the set of a television talk show.

Additional District & Sessions Judge (West) Sarah Junejo also directed the station house officer of the Saeedabad police station to submit a detailed report regarding the alleged incident by June 29.

Mandokhel had moved an application under Section 22-A of the Criminal Procedure Code, seeking directions for the SSP Complaints Cell and SHO PS Saeedabad to lodge an FIR against Awan.

Awan made headlines earlier this month after footage of her getting into a physical altercation with Mandokhail went viral on social media.

The incident occurred when the two appeared on Express News' talk show Kal Tak. What started as a discussion about the government's performance and excessive load shedding in parts of the country turned into a shouting match between the two over the train collision in Sindh's Ghotki district, which claimed the lives of more than 60 people.

Shortly after, a video clip surfaced on the internet showing Awan physically attacking and slapping Mandokhail.

In his application, Mandokhel said the respondent, Firdous Ashiq Awan, had allegedly slapped him, abused him and hurled threats, which was shown on the television channel, shocking his family members and voters.

The applicant said he had approached the SSP Complaints Cell and SHO PS Saeedabad to register his complaint for lodging an FIR against Awan under the relevant sections of the law, but they refused to entertain his plea.

Therefore, he requested the court to direct the officials concerned to entertain his application and register an FIR against the PTI leader in accordance with the law.

After hearing initial arguments, the judge issued notice to Awan, SSP Complaints Cell and SHO Saeedabad, directing the latter to submit a detailed report regarding the alleged incident by June 29.

At the time, Awan had claimed that "one-sided" propaganda was being carried out as the video clip did not include the vulgar language used by the PPP leader against her and her late father.

She had added that she would consult her legal team to file charges against the PPP leader.

On the other hand, Mandokhail had said he was ready to forgive Awan if she apologised for her actions, adding that he would decide whether or not to take action against Awan after consulting with the party leadership.

https://www.dawn.com/news/1637987/ppp-slams-firdous-ashiq-awan-for-calling-people-of-sindh-illiterate

Special Assistant to Punjab Chief Minister (SACM) Firdous Ashiq Awan has found herself in hot water yet again, this time for making disparaging comments about the people of Sindh on a TV show.

The SACM — who was heavily criticised in June for slapping PPP MNA Qadir Khan Mandokhail — made the comments while appearing as a guest on ARY News show 11th Hour alongside PPP's Sharmila Farooqui and analyst Mazhar Abbas on July 29.

During the show, host Waseem Badami questioned Awan about the possibility of a PTI government in Sindh, noting that Abbas was of the opinion that the ruling party would not be able to give a "tough time" to the PPP.

"Well the first thing is that the PPP faces more danger from itself than from others," she said, adding that it was important for the PTI to "win people's hearts" rather than win seats.

"But if the PPP was a danger to itself how could it keep winning. It constantly keeps winning from rural Sindh," asked Badami.

In response, Awan said that the area Badami was talking about raised the slogan of "Bhutto". "The vote there is anti-Bhutto and pro-Bhutto," she said.

Pointing towards the "illiteracy and backwardness of Sindh", she said that the people of the province lacked political awareness and that there was also "the use of force".

Awan's most recent faux pas drew heavy criticism, with politicians and netizens alike calling her out for her derogatory remarks.

Sindh Information Minister Nasir Hussain Shah recalled the time when he told late Benazir Bhutto that a politician from Larkana was "not using good words" about her and asked to answer to the claims.

"She replied that those who want to come in my place, will they praise me? These people will remain mentally ill for the rest of their lives," he said, adding that time would give the biggest shut up call.

Sindh Irrigation Minister Sohail Anwar Siyal condemned Awan's "racist, narrow minded and unethical speech" as a resident of the province. "Sindhis have always taken an active & historic role in politics even before 1947," he said.

PPP leader Shazia Marri also condemned what she called a "bias against the people of Sindh".

"This person [Awan] is not only shameless but also ignorant about our history. Sindh’s assembly was the first legislature to pass the resolution in favour of Pakistan," she said.

Former provincial minister Sharjeel Inam Memon said: "Shame on these derogatory remarks of Firdous Awan for the people of Sindh. People of Sindh believe in democracy, they fought for the restoration of democracy, they are patriotic, educated and politically aware."

PPP's Mumtaz Ali Chandio said that people like Awan are to blame for fuelling ethnic divisions. "We demand that she retracts her statement and apologise for such insensitive comments," he said.

Activist and academic Nida Kirmani said that PTI leaders only expose their own "illiteracy" by making such statements.

Journalist Veengas said it was not the first time that Awan had used obnoxious words against Sindhis. "This is how they treat Sindh. Not a single person on the show opposed her hateful comments against Sindh."

https://www.dawn.com/news/1639139/firdous-ashiq-awan-resigns-as-special-assistant-to-punjab-cm-citing-unavoidable-personal-reasons

Dr Firdous Ashiq Awan resigned as special assistant to Punjab Chief Minister Usman Buzdar on information on Friday, less than a year after being appointed to the position, citing "unavoidable personal grounds".

In her resignation letter, a copy of which is available with Dawn.com, Awan thanked Prime Minister Imran Khan for "posing confidence in me to undertake the herculean task" of highlighting the "outstanding and remarkable performance of the Government of Punjab".

She also expressed her gratitude to Buzdar for his "scrupulous support ... from time to time which kept me motivated and steadfast in accomplishing the professional goals set for me by my party".

Awan said she was "proud" of undertaking the "sensitive" duties as SACM and "putt[ing] in my efforts with utmost dedication to signify the unparalleled and historical achievements by the Punjab government".

She further said she was "delighted" to have served the interests of the Punjab government. However, "due to certain unavoidable personal grounds, I am unable to continue with my present assignment, in the Government of Punjab," she said, while resigning from the position with immediate effect.

A notification issued by the Chief Minister's Office stated that Awan's resignation had been accepted by Buzdar.

Last month, Awan had submitted her resignation in order to run the PTI's by-election campaign in Sialkot but had later withdrawn it on the instructions of the prime minister.

"The premier has stopped me from resigning from my office and asked me to continue work to highlight the achievements of the Punjab government," she had told a news conference.

Sources in the chief minister's house, however, claimed that CM Usman Buzdar wanted Awan to resign as he was not comfortable with his aide on information. They alleged that Awan was even bypassing the chief minister in making announcements, which Buzdar himself wanted to announce.

Awan, who previously served as the special assistant to the prime minister on information and broadcasting, was appointed as special assistant on information to the Punjab chief minister in November 2020.

Awan, who was a PPP stalwart before she joined the PTI in May 2017, was named the special assistant to Prime Minister Imran Khan on information and broadcasting as part of a major cabinet reshuffle in April 2019, eight months after the PTI chief took office.

However, the charge was taken away from her in April last year, and she was replaced as the SAPM by retired Lt Gen Asim Saleem Bajwa. Bajwa himself resigned from the post in October 2020.

During her time as SACM, Awan was involved in a number of controversial incidents, including a "spat" with then Sialkot assistant commissioner Sonia Sadaf, getting into a physical altercation with PPP MNA Qadir Khan Mandokhail on the set of a TV show and making disparaging comments about the people of Sindh.

Meanwhile, CM Buzdar also de-notified Mohammad Awn Chaudhry as the special coordinator to the chief minister on political affairs with immediate effect.

According to a press release issued by the Chief Minister's Office, Buzdar met MPA Malik Asad Ali Khokhar today (Friday) and decided to appoint him as a provincial minister. Khokhar will take oath of office tomorrow, according to the release. However, it did not mention what portfolio would be given to Khokhar, who was previously the minister for wildlife and fisheries before he was asked to resign in July last year.

PTI’s senior leader and former special assistant to the prime minister on information and broadcasting Dr Firdous Ashiq Awan on Monday brushed off the news regarding her wish to join the PML-N, terming it "fake".

Sources privy to the matter said that Awan had expressed her wish to join the PML-N.
