Pakistan, first in the MRF Tyres ICC T20I Team Rankings until recently, have slipped to the fourth position. They will now look to claw their way back up.

Overview
England v Pakistan, 1st T20I
Old Trafford, Manchester
Friday, 28 August, 06pm local time, 05pm GMT

After having ascended to the top of the Men's T20I Rankings in early 2018, Pakistan maintained pole position until the annual update in May where they dropped three places. The big drop in their standing was a reflection of cracks that had shown in the side for a few months.

In 2019, they'd lost four series in a row, including a 3-0 clean sweep at home at the hands of Sri Lanka in October.

Pakistan's main issue has been with the bat – they haven't passed 150 with the bat in their last seven T20Is.

Since the start of 2019, Pakistan's top seven have averaged just 21.98, while striking at an equally modest 122.14. By contrast, England's batsmen have averaged 30.91 at a strike-rate of 152.71.

Skipper Babar, who is the No.1 ranked batsman in T20Is, has been the shining light for Pakistan during that period and will hope for better returns from the rest of his team while attempting to keep up his own remarkable record.

England, winners of the 50-over ICC Men's World Cup in 2019, are one of the most potent sides in both forms of white-ball cricket. Their last series loss in T20I cricket was over two years ago, following which they have won five series on the trot.

Despite being low on experience due to the management's decision to not field players who took part in the recently concluded Test series and the unavailability of Jason Roy due to injury, the Eoin Morgan-led side will fancy their chances of another successful outing.

Remember the last time

The two sides last faced off in a one-off T20I at Cardiff in May 2019, when England overhauled Pakistan's score of 173/6 with seven wickets to spare. Morgan blitzed his way to a 29-ball 57 to take the game away from the visitors.

I hope not rain again. The entire fun of test series was spoilt by rain. Hopefully the T20s will go ahead uninterrupted. We are just starving for some cricket.

I know it’s international cricket and broadcasters blah blah

But can’t they just play from 2-5 if they know it’s raining after 6?

My dream team and also possibly most probable team, but the batting order may change and that change of order can turn a win in loss, so hopefully sense prevail.
1.Fakhar
2.Babar
3.Haider
4.Shadab/Rizwan
5.Hafeez
6.Ifitikhar
7.Imad
8.Shadab/Rizwan
9.Amir
10.Shinwari/Wahab
11.Shaheen
If they play this team in this order and with a license to go for kill then we can take series atleast 2-1, And there is good depth in both batting and bowling.
if second wicket fall before 10th over than Rizwan must play at 4, and he can consolidate one end and if it fall after 10 than shadab should come and attack and they should swap positions, and if second fall after 15 then both of them should come after imad. this is how we can utilize them best.

Not Iftikhar .....

Khushdil should play as a WK batsman. Azam Khan should have been in the T20I squad, not sure why he wasn't considered? He is a clean hitter. We don't have a power hitter in this squad at all. Khushdil hasn't proven himself at International level. Asif Ali should have been there.

Khushdil Shah ... instead of Iftikhar. Also, I think M. Husnain should play instead of Wahab, but it is a very tough decision. Wahab can be very effective.

Ifti is better finisher plus hitter and also handy bowler, khushdil is just leg side hack but Ifti can hit all around with timing.

Why instead of Iftikhar? Iftikhar played really well against the likes of Starc and Cummins that too in Australia, not sure why are people calling for his head? Iftikhar should be in the playing XI till the end of the upcoming T20I WC.

Azam khan 😂😂😂 are you serious??
He had 1 or 2 decent outings in PSL plus he's extremely over

MenInG The timer at the top of the PP homepage is wrong!!!
I've agreed to play football at the time the match is going to start because of that!!
I for one am hoping for a late start!

I think whichever team win the toss should bowl first. It should be easier to chase.

Not for Pakistan honestly - we will lose an early wicket (for example Babar) and everyone else will come under pressure. We don’t know how to chase even in a reduced overs match.

Pak should bat first.

I want to see Babar and Haider setting up a total!

I also agree. We should take this series as a challenge of the unfamiliar. Look at Eng playing so many guys who wont even feature in WC. Lets be brave

NEW DELHI: Former Indian opener and captain Krishnamachari Srikkanth lauded the England, West Indies and Pakistan teams for not only playing international cricket but also following all the rules and regulations in view of the coronavirus pandemic.

In his column for the Times of India, Srikkanth wrote, "I would like to start with thanking the England, West Indies and Pakistan teams for bringing international cricket back. In these extremely different and difficult circumstances, it requires a great amount of discipline and self-control to follow all the rules and regulations."

"Despite the restrictions and complete lack of match practice, the quality of cricket we got to see in the six Tests has been good. Even the elite athletes require time on the park to get to their optimum fitness and skill level, and I am sure the upcoming three-match T20 International series will see better performances with the players getting closer to their potential," Srikkanth added.

The coronavirus pandemic has led England to name separate red-ball and white-ball squads this season, with the likes of all-format stars such as Test captain Joe Root, Ben Stokes, Jos Buttler and Jofra Archer missing from a three-match Twenty20 series against Pakistan at Old Trafford starting Friday.

"I like the idea of England fielding an entirely different team for white-ball cricket. Their success in the shorter formats has a lot to do with this line of thinking. I have always believed in horses for courses and I am sure other teams will follow this shortly. Ben Stokes and Jos Butler will return for sure but I don't see any other player from the Test team making the cut in T20s," Srikkanth opined.

England's Jason Roy has been ruled out of the Twenty20 series against Pakistan after sustaining a left side strain. Roy suffered the injury this week in the team's preparation at Emirates Old Trafford, the venue for the series opener on Friday. Roy will remain with the squad and commence his rehabilitation programme with a view to featuring in next month's white-ball series against Australia.

"In knowing the conditions better and packing more power hitters, England will definitely start as favourites but with Pakistan around, one can never be sure. It promises to be an exciting series. For the hosts, the series will throw a slightly different kind of a challenge. They have to tune themselves for the upcoming IPL," Srikkanth wrote.

Pakistan captain Babar Azam, the world's top-ranked T20 batsman, featured throughout during Pakistan's 0-1 loss to England in a three-Test series only completed on Tuesday. Babar will be facing the very different demands of T20 cricket in Manchester.

"For Pakistan there is an opportunity to try out their young guns and move closer to building a team they can be proud of. All eyes will be on Babar Azam as he tries to become the most complete all-format batsman from Pakistan. They have good blend of youth and experience and should try harder to bring some consistency to their cricket," Srikkanth signed off.

Exactly this is basically England B team. So we should try to experiment a little bit!

Haris Rauf and Hasnain will be left out according to Media Reports

Looks like if that teams playing 140 is a really good score

Such a boring team. Nothing to feel excited about. Why is Misbah so adamant to destroy Pakistan’s brand image completely?

Looking forward to this game. Last few days have been tough for me and some light cricket would be a great change.

Oh man what a let down

Bowlers will be shadab, imad, amir, shaheen, wahab. I’ve been calling this since before the test series
Ridiculous. Why would you play Shaheen and Wahab over Haris and Hasnain?

The overuse of Shaheen is exactly the same reason why Amir retired from Tests.

Basically the ODI XI, but Hafeez and Malik in for Imam and Haris.

Man what are Haider and Khushdil doing on the bench...

I agree but alas :salute

Although tbh Hasnain is overrated, the majority of his wickets in the most recent PSL were soft wickets and also not as high quality.

Shaheen was better according to the Cricinfo stats team, the best bowler in the PSL as per their “smart wickets” count. But yeah, shouldn’t over bowl him.

Would have liked to see Harris over Wahab but latter did pretty well here in the last World Cup and it’s just 4 overs so Shaheen should be fine.

See these kind of decisions differentiate us from rest of the World cricket good teams. These yaaarian culture has destroyed Pakistan cricket for a long time now, and now Babar azam is another puppet in the making, no guts to stand up to these leeches like malik and hafeez and even Misbah. Sorry states ahead of us if he doesn’t show any man guts. He will vanish quickly if he continues to listen and not become a leader like Kohli or Morgan.

Yea but in the field he is diving and running so there is a possibility of injury.

Oh man what a let down

May be a let down, but it is the most Misbah thing ever: lets ignore our youngest and most exciting players in the bilateral T20's and include our most mediocre 38 & 39 year old batsmen, the 35 year old fast bowler who is among the most inconsistent the world, and the 21 year old who's coming off a full test series where he was the spearhead.

Who can forget Rafatullah Mohmand making a debut at the age of 42 :)))

Bhai ghar he bhej do sab youngsters ko agar khilana nai, this Misbah guy and seniority culture is the cancer which we can never cure.

I feel sick...nothing to look forward to. I really want to see Haider, Rauf, Hasnain and Khushdil but its Misbah at the wheel

Well i said before, Mickey Arthur was the best thing happened to Pakistan cricket, he was progressing our team v well.

Haider not playing would be a big shame.

Pakistan is bowling first. It is a good decision given the England team can chase nearly everything.

Babar understands the English pretty well, I wont be surprised if he gathers the confidence to speak as well. Not that it matters much but, would be a good edition to Babar overall.

Yeah definitely just needs to gain more confidence to speak! Would recommend him to read newspapers, online articles or perhaps he should join PP :))
