What's new

First Test between Pakistan (476/4 d & 252/0) and Australia (459) in Rawalpindi ends in a draw

Pakistan should declare now, and aim to pick up a few quick Aussie wickets in the last session of the game.

Even draws can be made exciting.

It’s all about mental games now I recon, a dramatic result is unlikely.

Pakistan could just bat all through tea and keep Australia out there for 30 more overs. Imagine if Australia lose the toss again in 3 days time and have to come back out in the field. That would be mentally shattering!

Imagine declaring with Abdullah Shafique on 99! Would almost be funny.....I said, almost!

But yeah I agree, let's let these two get their centuries and then declare. If we somehow get 3 or 4 wickets we can at least have a moral victory in this test, if not an actual one.

Like all spinners he needs something from the pitch. I mean even Warne would have struggled on such a dead track. The ball is coming at a nice slow pace, no extra bounce etc.
There is only so much a bowler can do.

I'm talking overall, not just his bowling on this pitch. He's an average bowler who has got to 400 wickets by virtue of longevity. Hardly any skill in his bowling.

Is abdullah shafiq is brother of asad shafiq? . He seems another player who boost his average in dead rubber.

So he should have got out just because it is a flat wicket?

I’m not sure why the criticism of the players here, yes they played a very circumspect game but when have Pakistani batsmen played at a RPO of 4+ in the past few years? You can’t expect Azhar Ali to start playing like Maxwell, just because he is facing an ordinary bowling attack on a flat deck?!

Blast the curator and his team for mucking this up horribly.

Nathan Lyon is easily the worst bowler I've ever seen with more than 400 test wickets. Has a combined total of 1 variation: off spin.

He has been poor against Pakistan forever.
But has done well in India/SL/BD so not too bad.

Babar and all the Pakistan team is in training kit now. I don't think that Babar is even thinking about declaration.

No point in declaring

Just keep Aussies in the field for as long as possible and tire them out

Both openers reached their maiden Test tons in this match. Couldn't have hoped for an easier pitch to do it on, congratulations nonetheless.

Ordinary bowling attack aswell, these guys will get smashed in the subcontinent 9 times out of 10 honestly.

So what exactly you want him to do....should he refuse to bat since it's a flat pitch or throw his wicket away

100 against the likes of Cummins/Starc/Hazlewood in just his 3rd test is a great achievement irrespective of conditions

When a Western player scores 300+ on flat deck he is well praised like Taylor in 1998.

But When Imam or AZhar score big or Abdullah
Their achievement is reduced to phatta batting paradise pitch.

In case of imam he has scored almost 300 runs in this test match.

Australians appealing like Shaheen would when he is fully serious

Aussie fielders playing with Imam here, some much-needed entertainment to be honest :)))

There was a clear nick.. That was out if they had referred it. Aussies caught sleeping on this boring dead track.

Just shake hands...go back to hotel...have a nice dinner and prepare for next test from tomorrow.

Why are they still playing? Both team dont have heart to take a gamble.

The pitch has been far too flat.

It’s not hot enough to detoriate so should have a bit more spice in them from the start.

15 wickets across 5 days play is awful. Awful test surface.

So Fawad has had no batting practice on this track,

But he will be the one to stand, grind and fight for your side when the going gets tough.

Pakistani fans will continue to cry, rather than applaud a rare feat of two centuries in the same test by a young player.

Our fans are a bigger joke than this pitch :))

Mindless stuff.. Declare and try something for 30 odd overs. Even if they knock a couple of Aussie batters... will be good psychological advantage.

Fantastic by these two...its not their fault if the pitch is so bad. No need to declare why give their batters some practice

228 overs batted by Pakistan in this Test and poor Fawad Alam hasn't batted a single ball :ssa2

Pakistan should continue to bat, to run these Australians bowlers into the ground and also troll our na-shukray fans.

Two birds with one stone.

History is repeating itself

Imam was given a halwa series and track like this against Zimbabwe B a few years ago and he boosted his ODI average to 50+, it still is around that average till this date.

Now he will cash in on easy tracks against lesser attacks and fail when you need him on away tours with the odd hundred. But his average will be above 45-50

I had forgotten that test matches even have draws. This test match revived those hoary days of the past decades when matches would end up in tame draws. What does PCB hope to achieve by preparing pitches like this where only 15 wickets fall in 5 days ? It is a poor advertisement for test cricket.

I thoroughly enjoyed every single moment of this historic test match.

Psychological advantage to pakistan.
Aussie bowlers in almost
240 overs have taken only 4 wickets.

Test cricket at times is attritional. Karachi test will be different cup of tea. We sill see similar pindi type pitch in lahore. Pak to beat Aussies 1-0.

At the ground.

Absolutely woeful approach.

No fun in this cricket. Only Smith and Warner responding to the crowd and making a life out of this dull match.

Only hope is Australia comes out batting like T20 kings.

Never ever have I seen Pak play this defensive. It’s a whole lot worse than just being defensive.

Pitches such as this 1 are certainly not going to help our cricket. Really do hope in karachi lahore they're little pacier

Game will be called off in next few overs, before the last hour.

last ten overs 24 runs and Imam after his hundred scored 4 (23) balls giving maiden to part timer lol..

Why are they wasting time and energy , cant mutually agree for a draw and go home early, catch some rest..

the LOIs will be played in this very ground, and I hope Pakistan choose some hard-hitting batsman otherwise Aussies will run over the slow snail approach from Pakistan..

Agreed, we are never satisfied. Can't remember two successive 100+ opening partnerships vs Australia in our Test history even on flat tracks.

Direct your criticism at this curator.

highest 1st wicket partnership is 415 , not they getting there also then why keep playing ?

Australia’s part time options would be a handful on Indian dust bowls

Pakistan ought to show some grit here. Have some trust in your bowlers and declare now to try to put some life in this deader than dead skunk of a match.

I feel bad for you guys.

Seen my share of roads in Oz in the past but it really took some hard work, hard decisions and effort to get rid of them from our game so much.

Pretty sure Ramiz is switched on to this and while he _may_ have decided he needs to maximise every single telecast 5 day dollar from this marquee home series simply because home revenue has been a huge black hole- I think he knows the future needs better pitches. hence his drop in ideas etc,

Must be the most pointless last day of a Test match in the history lol

Boring test match ends.

I think pakistan will be glad hasan and fahim will be back next game.

Aussies need to pick bolland, i think hes the one bowler who might do well in pakistani conditions.

They would have to drop Hazlewood or Starc for that, don’t think Cummins is brave enough to drop those two

And so it ends in draw. Well played to pak openers-will do wonders for their confidence for 2nd test.
So this test has proven a few things .
- If the Big 3 cartel existed would Aus have turned up? or maybe NZ replace aus as the new entrant to the big 3 and Big 3are still responsible for all that not so good in cricket? Imagine the reams of space that Big 3 syndrome has occupied on these pages - any one has them kebabs to say 'we got it wrong'?
- Secondly, the padosi ka saazish in everything - i mean -it was only 5 days ago that some blast in another city was blamed on us by lots in the pak media and here, like surely someone would have thought that if we 'wanted' to sabotage the series, woudn't we 'do the blast' on the day aus landed or in the same city where they are or during the test match? Does any one have them kebabs in them to say 'we got it wrong'?
- thirdly, with all the lovey dovey with warner, smith - afridi and naseem and the softy smiles etc - will Rambo Raja/anyone turn up here and say they are angling for a PSL role/contract ?
Or maybe that selective narrative is only to be used for the IPL by all and their aunt when india does well agains Aus/Eng/whoever?

Lastly , am a crick lover and would love to watch Aus play pak in pak, just sick of the one sided 'its always some else's fault' pathetic narrative built up here blaming especially us.

bet this post will be deleted by the admin.

Bring onthe 2nd test!

Starc is useless in these conditions, he was in UAE and will be here.

Pakistan openers Abdullah Shafique and Imam-ul-Haq notched up tons as the first Test between Pakistan and Australia in Rawalpindi ended in a draw.

Pakistan bowlers continued their momentum from last evening and straight away picked wickets in the morning to end Australia’s innings on 459/10.

Resuming at 449 for 7, Pat Cummins and Mitchell Starc aimed to take a first-innings lead. To put pressure on the batters, Pakistan started with Shaheen Afridi. However, Nauman Ali, who had already taken four wickets, dismissed Pat Cummins in his first over of the day, completing his third five-wicket haul. Shaheen in the very next over trapped Starc in front, ending his innings on 13. After Nathan Lyon was trapped in front of the stumps while sweeping Ali, Pakistan wrapped up Australia's innings in the first 20 minutes of the day with Nauman bagging his career-best figures of 6-107.

With a lead of 17 runs in the first innings, Pakistan openers Imam-ul-Haq and Abdullah Shafique once again blunted Australia's attack in the second innings. On a dead Rawalpindi surface, the batters got off to a good start, as the Australian bowlers continued to struggle to take early wickets.

Imam followed up his maiden Test century with yet another hundred in the second innings. Unlike in his earlier innings, he was in an aggressive mood, charging spinner Nathan Lyon and hitting him down the ground on several occasions. Abdullah, who threw away his wicket on 44 in the first innings, looked solid as Pakistan reached lunch at 76 for 0 with Imam 40 not out and Abdullah unbeaten on 33.

As the second session of the day began, Imam slowly approached his half-century and brought up the landmark with a reverse sweep against Lyon. Abdullah also reached the half-century mark, and the batters continued to stretch their century-opening partnership.

With no expectations from the game, Australia decided to rest their regular bowlers and deployed part-time spinners. The batters continued to pile up runs, taking advantage of the part-timers' weak deliveries to score runs. With no signs of a declaration, Pakistan reached Tea at 191 for 0 with Abdullah just one run short of his maiden century and Imam unbeaten on 89.

With the result of the match almost certain, the final session of the day began. Abdullah who was in the driving seat throughout the second session of the day brought up his maiden Test century with a single. In hopes of extracting some positives out of the final day and in search of the first wicket, Australia brought their all-rounder Cameron Green into the attack.

Imam on the other end struggled to reach his century, as he survived some close calls and was also lucky to be given not out off a nick on 94. But he ultimately completed his second century with a double over mid-off, becoming the tenth batter for Pakistan to score two centuries in a Test.

The two teams finally shook hands with Pakistan's score at 252/0. The action will now move to Karachi with the second Test beginning on March 12.

As if we didn’t have enough insecure Pakistanis whining on this forum, this guy proceeds to turn the tide and try to make it about India on a match thread :))

boring

said the series would end 1 1 draw resulting in a draw series

Pat Cummins:

Asked if this was the flattest pitch he has ever played on:

"In terms of the wicket, it wasn't a super fair contest between bat and ball; Have played on a couple (of flat pitches) before but yes this one was right up there"

How does this pitch compare with the MCG in Ashes a few years back:

"I'd say pretty similar, and probably Ranchi as well - that's another one ..."

More on the pitch

"Turning up to a pitch that's probably not a traditional pitch you would get here in Rawalpindi, and it's probably clear they've made an effort to try and nullify the pace bowling"

"I think that's a positive. And, sub-continent conditions, coming away with a draw it's not a bad result"

About the crowd

"The horns (being blown) by the crowd were a feature and certainly noisy, they were fantastic - just positive overall - even late in the day, I saw when Davey was and Smithy was at the fence, they were cheering them on; So really a passionate crowd obviously for Pakistan, but really respectful and great for our players as well; Every time we walked up the field, they would be chanting and trying to get waves from our players which was awesome."

About Pakistan batters:

"I thought the Pakistani batters batted really well the whole game - they got themselves in and then once they got themselves in they were able to just tick over the score. We'll spend the next couple of days reviewing it having a look at maybe different plans ahead of Karachi, expecting probably different conditions as well, but yes, they batted really well and won the toss and made the most of it"

"The venue and the crowd has been fantastic; In our bubble at the hotel the staff we interact with have been fantastic and so accommodating, and I can't thank the PCB and CA enough for bringing this together"

Abdullah Shafique speaking to the press:

"Scoring my first Test century and that too against Australia is a major confidence booster for me and it's very exciting for me"

"Everyone knows that Australia has a lethal bowling attack so this century against them will give me a lot of confidence"

"Imam and I planned to play our innings in the way a Test innings should be played and so we slowly built a good momentum and we were able to score centuries"

"The game plan for today was to do our best, we are very happy with our performance in this game, Nauman bowled really well and this match was a confidence booster for us which should help us do better in the next game"

Maybe you did'nt read correctly - it was about the 'its always someone else's fault' gravy train that i commented on, what a patetic waste of time that is occupying precious mind space, etc and nothing to make it about India or insecure pakistanis. hope warner and co get good PSL contracts.
With so much focus on pitch, am sure it will be more bowler friendly-2nd test will be interesting and exciting.
