Guwahati: As the world fumbles for a cure to the coronavirus, which has claimed thousands of lives, a BJP legislator in Assam on Monday left the state assembly astounded - he said the remedy may be "gaumutra" (cow urine) and "gobar" (cow dung).

Suman Haripriya said cow urine and cow dung are helpful in curing deadly diseases like cancer. "We all know that cow dung is very helpful. Likewise, when cow urine is sprayed, it purifies an area... I believe something similar could be done with gaumutra and gobar to cure coronavirus (disease)," she said during a discussion on smuggling of cattle to Bangladesh during the budget session of the assembly.

Ms Haripriya said the economy of Bangladesh has strengthened on the back of smuggled cows from India, primarily Assam.

"Bangladesh is the second-largest beef exporter in the world. All these cows are our cows. Earlier the Congress government did nothing to stop smuggling of cows," she said.

"Nowadays, river route is mostly used to smuggle cows," the BJP MLA said and asked the BJP-led government in Assam to monitor the cattle markets in the state as she said "illegal trading is being carried out by them with most of their receipts being fake".

As many as 25,738 people are under community surveillance across the country while 37 people suspected to have COVID-19 symptoms are currently hospitalised. China has so far seen 2,912 deaths due to coronavirus.

Don't these clowns get tired of all this?

And just like other fellow sanghis, see how patronizingly she talks about Bangladesh...

Nobody in these BJP ruled states has the guts to file a complaint against idiots spreading hate, misinformation and stupidity

Should give this a shot, Indians are very advanced in medicinal science, we know this because their posters on here often explain this to us in some detail. Local.Dada had some interesting theories on this, unfortunately his posts got removed, presumably because they were beyond the comprehension of the readers here, much like the science of Gaumutra and Gobar.

I sometimes feel these guys are trolling

Let her get treated with that. Let her demonstrate by example. Will be fun.

It is just a matter of time before one of these idiots comes up on Arnab's show with a glass full of cow's urine to show us a demo.

I want to laugh at this. However, I recently read a post on twitter that said "Waddhu keeps the coronavirus away". Point being, extreme brainwashed mentality is on both sides. Best to ignore.

Another bizarre suggestion from an Iranian cleric

Hilarious!

Forget Coronavirus. These idiots believe that sprinkling cow urine drops in your food can cure cancer too.

Stupidity has no limits. All in the name of Nationalism and Hindu pride :))

Most experts have claimed washing hands regularly is a good way to prevent Coronavirus. Isn't washing hands a part of Wudhu?

Not saying it will 100% protect you but washing hands/staying clean is very basic advice, not sure how you can lump it with using cow dung.

Radical religious folks at their finest
They never focus on the part of their religions where they bridge gaps between people but instead on some stupid things like gaumutar or putting oily cotton balls into the anus (come to think of it I never heard something as "Islamic medicine" )

Always knew there was some crappy cure available
Scientists are stupid tbh spending millions of dollars on a cure why can't they just hire him instead where there will be gaumutar syrup and gobar pills available for every imaginable disease on Earth

Lol, Modi's supporters are so weird. As bad as Pakistan is, it's still a million times better than Ghobar Hindustan

Only bhakhts should try this at home. :inti

I will blame a lot of this nonsense on that stooge Baba Ramdev. He has popularized a lot of nonsense in ancient India in the name of Swadeshi Gaurav and Aatmabhiman.

Many bhakts do not think about the validity of those claims and simply follow as these fake babas say.

Lol there are so many of them. Nirmal Baba, asaram and Love Charger Baba ( Gurmeet Singh). :inti

You have to wash with soap. Not just water.

Sure not saying just Wudhu would stop the virus. My point is can’t compare washing hands with consuming cow dung/urine. The latter is a tad more extreme isn’t it?

Anyways my intention isnt to mock anyone’s religious beliefs. If some people believe that consuming cow urine is good then they should go ahead with it. As long it isn’t forced on unwilling people, it should not be an issue

I agree. The Hindu way of treating Coronavirus is lolworthy. This is what you get from religions.

If I were a self-respecting virus, I would certainly stay away from anyone caked in these... bovine byproducts.

Cow dung and urine forms a large part of Ayurvedic medication

I recently visited to Iscon Temple in Mayapur, West Bengal. Iscon, as many would know is a reputed establishment and they would not keep anything without full proof. There is a Ayurveda shop inside containing medicines for Blood pressure, Arthiritis, Cholesterol, Gastro disease etc. Most of these medicines are made of cow dung or urine along with other plant extracts and minerals.

Those who practice Ayurveda believe every person is made of five basic elements found in the universe: space, air, fire, water, and earth. These combine in the human body to form three life forces or energies, called doshas. They control how your body works. They are Vata dosha (space and air); Pitta dosha (fire and water); and Kapha dosha (water and earth).

Everyone inherits a unique mix of the three doshas. But one is usually stronger than the others. Each one controls a different body function. It’s believed that your chances of getting sick -- and the health issues you develop -- are linked to the balance of your doshas.

Needless to say most of my fellow posters are extremely ill informed on this topic. They just saw few catchy lines like BJP, Cow, NDTV and got enough amunition to create a thread to mock hindu beliefs.

In ancient times and even during British era, Ayurveda was a part of Indian education system. But then Congress and Pandit Nehru decided to get rid of it from syllabus. BJP now is trying to bring back the concept of Ayurveda and making people aware.

You are free not to believe in it but mocking someone elses belief is not good.

And NDTV...dear me :))

I wonder if drinking cow urine and eating cow dung may result in another virus spread like coronavirus. India needs to get a hold of reality.

Ow dung has to sprayed inside and outside home. Not eat. It’s a tradition in south India to spray cow dung outside home after mixing with water. This is done to keep out pests. Not sure how much it works though. :))

I know it is part of Ayurveda. But in 2020, if someone claims and makes foolish statements without proper evidence, they deserve to get ridiculed.

Nothing foolish about it. Most of the diseases are spread by either abnormal growth of cells or due to failure in immune system. Just bcoz its 2020, the way a disease work didnt change. In Ayurveda, Vata Dosha controls how cells divide and Kapha dosha help to maintain immunity.

Lets face it, the only reason you and NDTV choose to ridicule the statement bcoz it was given by a member of a party you dont support. But both you and NDTV have zero knowledge on the subject.

C'mon man how are you going to support cow pee and cow poop used as medicine it's just ridiculous c'mon you are better than that

Read my above post dear brother. Cow dung and Urine is already used with proven results for various disease like High BP, Arthiritis, Cholesterol etc. Reputed institutions like Iscon sells them. So its not me supporting but they are already an ingredient of Ayurveda.

Don't ever reason with sanghis. They'll first bring you down to their level and then you know.....

I just love the way clueless sanghis bring in Nehru even in their poop worthy beliefs. Lol, the man is dead for over half a century. Let him rest in peace in his grave.

I don have any problem with using cow dung for any purpose other than eating it. But I am afraid that eating it or drinking cow urine by considerable number of people can result in a new widespread virus.

China is now planning to teach its citizen not to eat exotic wild animals like bats, snakes etc. They have now realized its consequences. India on the other hand is going the opposite way and promoting this kind of stuff. Thats not good.

Good for you bro, let science tell the story, don't let internet bullies stray you from your convictions.

It was a surprise how many Indians were shocked by the study’s findings – drinking cow urine was found to be significantly harmful to human health.

The research carried out by the Indian Veterinary Research Institute (IVRI) discovered urine samples from healthy cows contained 14 types of harmful bacteria. Escherichia coli, which causes stomach infections, was most commonly detected.

Cow urine has long been purported as having a host of health-giving benefits by those who practise ‘Ayurveda’, an alternative, holistic medicine system that derives its teachings from Hindu scriptures and can trace back its roots in India more than 2,000 years.

Involving a mixture of herbal medicines, medical oils and mineral substances, as well as adherence to a strict diet and often the practice of yoga and meditation, Ayurveda is considered a pseudoscience by many in the West.

But at least 77 percent of Indians use Ayurvedic products, according to a 2017 report, with this figure expected to have grown further since the Covid-19 pandemic.

The industry is worth £7.8 billion, and a quick Google search displays a host of major Ayurveda firms advertising products.

Patanjali, India’s largest Ayurvedic firm, sells a medicine containing bottled cow urine for 50p which promises to “cure eczema, control diabetes and cancer”. Easy Ayurveda, another brand, provides customers detailed instructions on how to distil urine, claiming it is useful against a host of conditions from leprosy to asthma.

Infamously, during India’s devastating Covid-19 second wave, several parliamentarians from India’s ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) even advised their constituents to drink cow urine to avoid infection from the virus.

The findings from the IVRI might not come as a shock to many scientists and doctors around the world, but they have again raised questions of India’s poorly-regulated Ayurveda industry and the belief it might be doing more harm than good.

Ayurveda’s critics do agree that there are compounds and medicines used in the ancient practice which can play a pivotal part in modern medicine today.

As early as 300 BC, there are records of Indian Ayurvedic physicians using the seeds of the velvet bean plant to treat symptoms of Parkinson’s disease.

The seeds contain high levels of levodopa, an amino acid that was found to be an effective dopamine replacement agent and is now considered the gold standard treatment for Parkinson’s patients.

“There are many medications within Ayurveda that are effective that have been adopted into western medicines,” explains Dr Ramanan Laxminarayan, the Founder and Director of the One Health Trust, a leading public health research organisation headquartered in Washington DC and Delhi.

“Ayurveda has phenomenal potential but it can’t be evaluated adequately by a western, reductionist approach. It is a systemic approach, the ultimate level of personalised medicine and relies on a physician who can treat your needs, specifically.”

Dr Laxminarayan advocates for a science-based approach to public healthcare but says this can be twinned with the benefits of Ayurveda.

He consumes Arjuna powder on a daily basis, for example, a powdered bark from the Arjuna tree which scientific studies have shown can lower cortisol and blood pressure.

Even this correspondent, a resident of India for over four years now, consumes Ashwagandha supplements, which derive from a flowering shrub found in India and the Middle East, which studies suggest can bolster the immune system and reduce stress.

Regulation across the Indian health sector remains the major issue. This doesn’t just apply to Ayurveda but also its pharmaceutical industry – at least 70 children in the Gambia and 20 children in Uzbekistan died last year after consuming cough syrups allegedly manufactured in India.

India’s pharmaceutical and Ayurveda industries are one of the country’s few manufacturing successes and, therefore, there is little political will to enforce quality control checks or publish studies critical of the industry.

But, in 2017, a right to information request found nearly 40 percent of Ayurveda products tested by the Indian government were found to be of substandard quality, including several items sold by Patanjali.

Items were found to contain toxic levels of heavy metals, including lead, as well as insecticides, pesticides, industrial solvents, antibiotics and steroids.
