"Gautam Gambhir is a sort of character which no one likes even in the Indian team" : Shahid Afridi

I really hope that we see a positive game, and yes, for now I am firmly donning my Pakistani hat and wishing for a result in favour of my team, writes the former Pakistani captain.

We are now just a month away from the biggest cricket match of the year - the mouth-watering India-Pakistan face-off in the ICC Champions Trophy at Edgbaston. Like millions of fans around the world, I am also excited about the game and look forward to a highly entertaining match between the two traditional rivals, who have a rich cricketing history between them.

The Champions Trophy is the only ICC event where Pakistan have had successes against India. We won the 2004 match at Edgbaston and then the 2009 match at Centurion. I hope the Men in Green deliver a rousing performance at Edgbaston to improve their record against India in global events.

Contrary to popular belief, India and Pakistan players get along very well. Of course, there are exceptions like Gautam Gambhir, who dare I say isn’t the friendliest. We are unlikely to be found together at a coffee shop anytime soon. We had a heated exchange on the field some years ago and it made headlines all over the world. While I have moved on in life as I feel these things are part and parcel of the game, Gautam for some reason can’t get over it. Good luck to him!

While Gautam is clearly an exception, I have enjoyed excellent relationships with Yuvraj Singh, Zaheer Khan and Harbhajan Singh. The three are one of my best mates and we have some wonderful memories together from the times when both the sides used to play and tour each other on a regular basis.

In the early days of our careers, we used to hang out together quite a lot and also spend time at each other’s homes. Now, all of us are married and, as such, responsibilities and the priority lists have changed. But whenever we catch-up, we meet with warmth and love, and remember our good times together.

I recall during one of India’s tours to Pakistan, I invited the entire India team to my Karachi house. We prepared special Pathan-style rich food, full of lamb and mutton dishes. When the food was served, there was a complete silence in the room and my Indian friends were looking at each other. At that point, I realised that my honourable and respectable guests don’t eat that type of food!

Quite a few of them were vegetarians, and so, we had to urgently replace the food with Daal (lentils) and vegetables dishes. It was quite embarrassing for me to not know about the dietary requirements of the guests since our similarity of culture made me take many things for granted. That was a funny memory of my ‘hospitality’ for the Indian team.

Another player I admire and respect from the present lot is Virat Kohli. He has a fantastic cricket bat in hand and an even a better heart in his supremely fit body. I will always remember him for the gesture he showed when he gave me an India cricket team signed shirt following our match in Kolkata in the ICC World Twenty20 2016. This shirt sits prominently in my collection and will always remind me of not only my matches and visits to India, but my excellent relationships with most, if not all India cricketers.

Unfortunately, we don’t meet each other that often now due to the prevailing relations between the two countries. But I miss the good times with my Indian cricket friends and I am sure they feel likewise. Hopefully, the situation will improve soon so that the old friends can reunite to relive old memories.

I consider myself extremely privileged and lucky to have played my international cricket in the era when Sachin Tendulkar, Rahul Dravid, Saurav Ganguly, VVS Laxman, Anil Kumble, MS Dhoni, Harbhajan Singh, Zaheer Khan, Yuvraj Singh, etc were on one side and the likes of Wasim Akram, Waqar Younis, Inzamam-ul-Haq, Mohammad Yousuf, Shoaib Akhtar, Moin Khan, Saeed Anwa and, Saqlain Mushtaq were on the other side. I don’t think it can get any better than this.

India and Pakistan have featured in some of the most iconic, thrilling and nail-biting matches. I have been very fortunate to play a few good innings against India, but the ODI century in Kanpur in 2005 stands out. The innings helped us take a lead in the six-match series which we eventually won 4-2 after we had started poorly, losing the first two games.

In the lead up to the Kanpur game, Yuvi, Bhajji and Zaheer came over to my hotel room. They were all relaxed and kept teasing me by saying that they will win the series with ease. I was at my wit’s end as they were all bullying me and it eventually made me a little angry. I then prayed to the Almighty Allah for our success so that we could restore our pride.

I think 12 years down the line, I should thank them for inspiring and motivating me to play the Kanpur knock, one of my favourite international innings.

The former Pakistani captain feels that the contest will once again be between Pakistan's bowling and India's batting.
On the upcoming match in Edgbaston, I really hope that we see a classic Indo-Pak match. India has the strength as well as the psychological advantage based on its recent performances against us. India is a batting powerhouse brimming with talent, which is well supported by an aggressive and attacking bowling line-up.

But I feel that Pakistan has a formidable bowling line-up that can challenge the Indian batting, especially in the English conditions. As always, the match would be a game of nerves and both teams would have to maintain their composure throughout.

The match is being played on a neutral venue, which might actually calm the nerves of the players a tad. All in all I really hope that we see a positive game, and yes, for now I am firmly donning my Pakistani hat and wishing for a result in favour of my team.

It's us fans of both nations who keep butting heads for no valid reason. Yes, we are arch rival just like Australia and England are, nothing wrong in that. But there's no reason to harbor hatred between us.

Is Afridi looking for an IPL contract :)

Watch any old players interview sunny, Wasim, Sehwag, Shoaib, Waqar, yuvi, Bhajji etc all say the same thing how they got along and were friendly with the other side.. Ultimately the language and culture is very similar so we can connect with each other rather than connecting with someone from Australia or England..

The situation being how it is I doubt any of today's players would be able to see that side of the other players..

Let's not be so harsh on fans. I bet realities would be different for us fans too if we had a chance to meet and greet.

Afridi swipe at GG; needs to move on GG

Why is Afridi, praising India and Kohli, a lot, nowadays?

IPL contract?

He doesn't even have a British passport. Had he had, a British passport, he could have easily joined RCB(Virat Kohli), just like Azhar Mahmood played for Kings X1 Punjab, with a British citizenship.

Or, is he looking for a place as a Mentor for RCB or to join commentatory panel

or he is just saying what he has always said before

not everyone has an ulterior motive

I think Afridi is just one confused guy.

One day he will saw we have large hearts Indians dont, other he will say something complete opposite.

 at the meat serving. Thats soo naive by him and insulting to the other person aswell. Just think about the reaction if pork was serve to a muslim. and knowing our pakistani team they would had told the media first hand who would had made a fuss about it.

He's correct though.

Happened more than 10 years ago and Gambhir has a cry about it every 12 months.

And delivers childish insults

All the Gambhir interviews I remember had Afridi mention only when he was asked about it. But I don't get why Afridi had to mention Gambhir in a totally unrelated question. In this particular case, it is Afridi who seems to be crying about it.

not factual but you can live in your own reality like Gambhir

maybe Afridi made fun of his height? :srt

Not Gambhir's fault that he keeps getting asked about it, such is the media.

not true

gambhir isnt egged on to bring it up. he just says it on a general question. and its not hard to evade a question even if it is very direct btw

Here also afridi was asked about the relationship with indian players and likely asked to delve further. Its an interview written in essay form. Or do you think Afridi actually pennned this essay :))

the point is afridi has moved on and is perhaps the first time he has brought it up and that too because gambhir has an annual whinge abt this

Bring me one example. I don't like Gambhir either, but here the only one showing #burnnnn is your very own Lala. Shouldn' have dragged Gambhir's name here, quite needless.

well actually afridi was wrote an essay....
he has wrote a column for icc as he is the champion ambassador of CT17.... he has mentioned lot of other things in the column as well.... about yuvraj harbajhan and zaheer khan calling them his best friends.....
but the funniest part of this article is that one day he had invited indian team for dinner and served with meat (pathaan meals) but majority of indian players were vegetarians....
he also felt he felt embarrassed that day.....
he has himself wrote it.

Gambhir talking about Afridi a lot is similar to Yuvraj giving 10 statements on KP or Flintoff. They are forced to respond because every interview has a special section dedicated to such altercations.

Afridi needs to realize this and cut Gambhir some slack.

icc's instagram account says afridi has written this article

played a match winning Innings in a w/c final which Afridi could never do :ashwin

Gambhir has two world title winning knocks in the 2007 world t20 and 2011 world cup but then so does Afridi in the 2009 World T20 semi final and then again in the final.

Right, but as a representative of his country maybe he should act smarter rather than crying a river.

GG and Virendar Sehwag, have always come across as individuals lacking class (Viru especially) contrary to most of the decent Indian players. This could be vividly seen in their twitter messages and comments on certain political issues...which I'd not mention here.

GG is a tremendous player; a complete modern day batsman. That being said, he does come across as a classless individual.

Good stuff from Afridi and really dont think any issues between players as such but some players are going OTT with political stuff

2 retired players.

I know Gauti is not retired, but he is as good as retired.

Ganbhir said Kamran Akmal is a good friend off the field in that interview where he talked about Afridi.

I wouldn't call him classless - he is a passionate individual and he speaks his mind quite bluntly about his country. You may not agree to his views but he isn't classless.

What are you talking about, I have many Indian friends and all of them enjoy eating meat.

Seriously, yes Pakistan and India have their issues and everyone can have opinion about it but there is no reason we should not have good relation with each other. An ordinary citizen has no role and can;t do anything about those issues.

Yeah right, cut ghambir some slack, like the poor chap hasn't said much himself has he?

Afridi recounts his encounter with Gambhir in a new ICC column, praises Kohli, Bhajji, etc.

Gambhir seems like one of those kattar Hindu nationalists. So happy he was exposed at the highest level and kicked out of the Indian team. Afridi is 10 times the man and cricketer he is.

Good to hear these things from Afridi. Serving mutton to the Indian team is a real Afridi moment though. Looks like the bindaas runs in the family! :afridi

Always thought that the UVI, Sehwag, Bhajjan, Zaheer, Dhoni, Irfan and Raina generation of Indian players were quite friendly off the field but tough competitors on it. Kohli is of a similar mould. Never heard much about Sachin or Dravid's relationship with the Pakistanis though. I guess they were too dignified to hang out with the young guns from either side.

Lala what a gentleman, even though ghambir was rude with his ghatya comment on afridi but lala stays classy.
#badaydil

If Afridi himself is bringing Gambhir's name then its hard to accept that Afridi doesn't gives any damn about Gambhir.

I dont know why these days Gauti has become a punching bag for everyone.

Gambhir brings it up annually

I can recount atleast 5 instances in the last couple of years...

Afridi never brought it up until asked to tallk about player-player Pak--India relations. Even here you have to admit he has mantained civil discourse. Gambhir has gotten very personal at times

Gambhir needs to get out more often, the guy clearly doesn't have a life and takes things too personally.

No surprise there

http://www.wisdenindia.com/cricket-news/gambhir-gets-four-match-ban-for-coach-fracas/258035

Gautam Gambhir was handed a suspended four-match ban from first-class cricket on Saturday (June 17) for his ugly spat with KP Bhaskar, the Delhi head coach, in March earlier this year.

A three-member enquiry committee constituted by Justice Vikramjit Sen, the Delhi and Districts Cricket Association administrator, comprising Madan Lal, Rajendra R Rathore and Soni Singh, termed Gambhir’s action as “humiliating” and “inappropriate”.

Sen, however, suspended the punishment for a period of two years, ending on March 30, 2019, conditional to Gambhir accepting the verdict and not committing any similar transgressions in the future.

The position of coach was one of “high respect and dignity”, Sen said in a statement as reported by PTI. “It is a serious disgrace to a coach to be humiliated in front of team members by one of the team members, even though if it is a senior player.”

The committee hoped the punishment would be a deterrent for others as well.

The Indian opener had accused Bhaskar of creating an insecure environment for youngsters during this year’s Vijay Hazare Trophy.

“Having learnt of an incident, which occurred when the team from DDCA was in Orissa, in which an altercation between Gautam Gambhir and Bhaskar Pillai had transpired, and pursuant to a complaint received from Pillai, I met both persons on 10th March 2017,” Sen said. “The matter could not be amicably and satisfactorily resolved.

“The committee members agree that considering the above facts and circumstances that have come to light, Mr Gambhir’s actions towards Mr Pillai with premeditated intent to humiliate the coach were highly inappropriate and of serious nature. It is recommended that such inappropriate behaviour requires to be penalised not only in a proportionate manner but in a manner that has a deterrent effect so that it is not repeated and such issues are taken seriously by all team members.

“The committee members feel the necessity of deterrent effect of penalties on account of such seriously inappropriate behaviour to inculcate discipline within the team and in the interest of the game of cricket.

“Having such considerations and findings as above in mind, the committee members recommend that Mr Gautam Gambhir should not be allowed to play in 4 (four) first-class matches of the Delhi team at the start of the next season, i.e. 2017-18 on account of his deliberate and pre-meditated inappropriate behaviour.”

Gambhir had been axed as Delhi’s captain for the Syed Mustaq Ali Trophy and had to play under Rishabh Pant. Sen added: “The actions of Mr Gambhir, however well intended, cannot be said to be in the interest of the team, or its performance or the game as it was done on the very last day of the season and therefore could not have been any corrective effect. The actions of Mr Gambhir were not in the spirit of the game.”

He is very combative in nature. I remember a spat with Kohli in IPL too. As far as his issues with Pakistan go, remember reading that his family had a history during partition and they have ties with Indian armed forces

It's real hate from him.

And obviously whatever Afridi said to him it rankles him that he brings it up every year... Must have been some burn

No just look at his character even with his Indian team mates. He had public spats even with Dhoni, the nice guy.

Gambhir hurling personal insults at Afridi over a tweet that had nothing to do with Gambhir...and Gambhir's fans are getting angry when others make personal comments on Gambhir for behaving like a fool. wah...

What was the point of bumping this thread? Has anything happened recently?

Gambhir made yet more personal comments about Afridi. Still rattled by the run in with Afridi from 2007 I guess...

Could be bad chemistry. Sometimes disliking another person is just bad chemistry. Gambhir does seem very annoying, I too would lay in to him on field.

Does Gambhir get along with anybody? Don't plenty of his own team mates hate him as well?

He won 2 IPLs and was booted out by the same team. Nobody upsets lover boy Shahrukh but apparently Gambhir did

Gambhir really is a sad little man. No reason for him to get so personal.

No record of Gambhir upsetting SRK, just cricketing decesion to move on from ageing player. IPL team scouts don't show any sympathy in selection / retention of any player ... Just pure business only creteria is stats and international performance. Gambhir being non-regular at International level, his stocks went down :19:

Dhoni says hi.

Dhoni and Yuvi ... star power and marketing value, not many are in that category. Certainly Gambhir is not in that level in terms brand value, not so good looking as well :19:

Gambhir performed better than them till last year IIRC.

Yea but, KKR has to look forward for next 3 years who can lead the team, certainly ageing Gambhir was not the option. Making DK captain is also not a wise move by KKR think tank.

Gambhir is a very bitter person. He's disliked even by many Indian cricketers. At least Sehwag doesn't comr off so angry all the time.

CSK selecting Dhoni again is for marketing purposes. Last year he was atrocious for Pune apart from a fluky innings against SRH i believe. It has been the case for atleast 3 years now.

In this age of social media being straightforward is being foolish. Celebrities should know what to say and what not to say online ir in front of media. Gambhir has wasted his career for his follies.

Wait a minute...

Kohli and Gambhir hate each other...
Afridi and Gambhir hate each other...
Kohli loves Afridi and vice versa...

Yea agree on Dhoni selection, but can't blame CSK ... they needed MSD to get the mojo of CSK back after 2 years hibernation. MSD will continue to be associated with CSK even after his retirement ....

TBH, he is too hot headed to be a captain. Even more than Kohli I'd say. Read here on PP the other day that his state team fired him from captaincy. WHo does that?

He won 2 IPLs and was booted out by the same team. Nobody upsets lover boy Shahrukh but apparently Gambhir did
ermm no...Gambhir specifically said to KKR that he wants to play for DD...that's why KKR didn't sign him back. Gambhir was the guy who turned around KKR's fortunes..they just respected his decision of wanting to play for his hometown again

If you speak to any discerning and educated Indian cricket fan, who's been following cricket long before the IPL jingoism corrupted the sport forever, they'll tell you some common names of cricketers who attract our derision and hate, even as Indian fans.

Harbhajan Singh for his boorish behaviour.
Munaf Patel for his laziness.
Azhar, Prabhakar, Mongia for fixing.
Sreeaanth for being Sreeaanth.
And Gambhir for his faux bravado.

Munaf Patel for his laziness.
Azhar, Prabhakar, Mongia for fixing.
Sreeaanth for being Sreeaanth.
And Gambhir for his faux bravado.

What did Srinath do bro to hate ?
