Former Pakistan batter Haroon Rashid has been appointed as Chair of the men’s National Selection Committee, while other members of his panel will be announced in due course.

Haroon played 23 Tests and 12 ODIs from 1977 to 1983 and last held this position in 2015-16. Most recently, he was the Convener of the Interim Selection Committee after having previously served in administrative and coaching roles with the age-group and national sides.

Chair of the PCB Management Committee, Mr Najam Sethi: “I want to congratulate Haroon Rashid and hope he will use his cricket knowledge, understanding and background while picking squads for the upcoming international assignments.”

Haroon Rashid: “I am honoured to have been entrusted with this responsibility and look forward to working very closely with the team management and the National High Performance Centre so that we have clear pathways and can work collectively to select best available players for what will be a busy and high-profile year of cricket, including the ACC Asia Cup, ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup and the tour of Australia for three Tests.

“One of the key aspects I will like to focus on my time will be improving communication. This is a critical area as the players need to have absolute clarity on why they have been selected or not selected, which, in turn, will help them to deliver the desired results, work harder on their skills and remain motivated.”

Pakistan FTP commitments from now until June 2024:

o 13 Apr-7 May – NZ to Pakistan (5 T20Is & 5 ODIs)
o July – Pakistan to Sri Lanka (two Tests)
o August – Pakistan to Afghanistan (three ODIs)
o September – ACC 50-over Asia Cup in Pakistan
o October/November – ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup India 2023
o December/January – Pakistan to Australia (three Tests)
o February/March – West Indies in Pakistan (two Tests, three T20Is)
o May – Pakistan to Netherlands (three T20Is), Ireland (three T20Is) and England (five T20Is)
o June – ICC Men’s T20 World Cup USA/West Indies 2024

Haroon Rasheed appointed as the Chief Selector for Pakistan

Najam Sethi has appointed former Test cricketer Haroon Rasheed as the national men's team chief selector.

Haroon, who was a member of Shahid Afridi-led interim selection committee which was appointed only for home New Zealand ODI series, has been appointed permanent chief selector.

"Following speculations, I finally confirm the appointment of Haroon Rasheed as the new chief selector," announced Sethi during a press conference in Lahore on Monday.

"We don't want to create any further misunderstandings due to a lot of speculation. Hence, I confirm this appointment. Haroon will get time to make his team and work for the betterment of Pakistan," he added.

What was the last team he selected before Misbah took over?

This is an important job but the new coach will be the main appointment. The previous selector selected almost all the performers from domestic.

Its upon the team management whom they play in the team.

Awful decision. At the end of Haroon's last tenure as CS - we were ranked 9 and 7 in ODIs and T20s. He also oversaw the 2015 Bangladesh whitewash defeat and 2016 WT20 group stage exit.

Notable selections including debuting 39 year old Rifatullah Mohmand, Khurram Manzoor in T20 format (with domestic T20 SR of 110) and Saad Nasim.

So in other words, hit 2 sixes in a PSL match and make it to the Pakistan Cricket team?

Amir, imad, wahab, even shoaib malik?

Looks like proper cricket selections will be back unlike the rubbish we have been served for 3 years

So selection for 50 over worldcup will be based on t20 psl performance? Great vision from him (NOT)

So selection for 50 over worldcup will be based on t20 psl performance? Great vision from him (NOT)

That’s fine as long as PSL performances don’t influence Test selection.

PSL is a much bigger platform than domestic 50 over competition & it is a high pressure environment. Besides, the way ODI cricket is played today, if most of your ODI players cannot fit into T20 setup you will not have a good ODI team to be begin with.

People will moan about this because they have deluded themselves into thinking that Pakistan is loaded with talent & a progressive CS would unleash that talent.

Fact is that Pakistan has zero talent. 99.99% of the domestic players & so called young talents are rubbish.

The CS position is the least important post in PCB these days. It makes absolutely no difference regardless of who the CS is because the quality is simply not there.

As long as Haroon does the basics right, i.e. picks players who are performing in domestic cricket & doesn’t let his personal agenda influence his selection, he will be fine.

Basically, if he wants to succeed, he should look at what M. Wasim did & do the exact opposite..

Lol, all we need now is Intikhab Alam back as head coach and Mohammad Ilyas also joining the selction committee, so we can welcome back Kamran Akmal and Imran Farhat for ODI WC.

People are forgetting that it was Haroon Rasheed who selected and introduced the likes of Babar Azam, Mohammad Rizwan, Sami Aslam etc. Into International Cricket.

He definitely does have an eye for talent and rewards youngsters mainly.Haroon Rasheed made some good selections and even brought back Shoaib Malik when he hit that purple patch of his.

Sethi, Shakil Shaikh and now Haroon Rashid. We are back in the "Baba" world where the higher your age the bigger the office you hold. Baba's to rule this modern world.

So in the era of attacking/aggressive cricket we appoints someone whose credentials are from decades old cricket... and putting a stamp as if these people are doing something better for cricket...

...Haroon played 23 Tests and 12 ODIs from 1977 to 1983 and last held this position in 2015-16...

PCB--->Pure Comedy Board :yk

Probably a case of others making the decisions and Haroon just agreeing to those decisions.

Don't give these idiots any ideas.

Thinking out of the box is totally opposite to this.
This is the REAL Pakistan; the sort of backward thinking that has plagued the country for 75 years.
Status Quo at its finest!
You will see traits of this in future selections; corruption, back handers, cheats, favours to one's son/nephew, seniority re-inforced, apathy, uneducated cricketers, thick baskets, Imran Farhats, Faisal Iqbals...you name it, and you will find all.
Welcome back Purana Pakistan.

I was thinking that maybe they'll turn the clock back to 2017-18 but I wasn't expecting 2015.

Good Luck team and fans

Is that why he selected 39 year old Rifatullah Mohmand, whose reflexes were so slow I thought my stream was buffering ?

This selection is on par with the PM Shabaz Sharif. Absolutely thrash. The mafia has destroyed the country and PCB is next.

PSL PSL PSL , i am sick and tired of PSL.

Why not scrap the whole pakistan 50 overs cup if you are selecting odi players based on PSL. PSL hasnt given us one good batsman in 7 seasons.

Performing in PSL shouldnt be the criterion for ODI selection.

Anyways, Haroon Rasheed is better than Iqbal Qasim and have done quite well in the past.

Iqbal Qasim was the worst CS we've had, and Haroon Rasheed was the 2nd worst.

What were Haroon's achievements as CS ? I already mentioned leaving us 9th and 7th in ODI and T20 rankings, the Bangladesh whitewash, and the 2016 WT20 group stage exit.

The Test team was Misbah's baby and little to do with Haroon.

:)) spot on, PCB the dinosaurs club.

That's all they are bothered about. PSL and T20 cricket.

No wonder we are one of the worst teams in the world when it comes to Test cricket.

The failures of Misbah and Mohd Wasim have forced the PCB to go back to the experienced old guard. It is likely that the likes of Inzi and Shoaib and Rashid Latif refused the role.

Inzi said 2-3 days ago that he has not been contacted by PCB and if contacted, he will consider it..seems Inzi wasnt approached by PCB

That could be because Mohmand was closer to 49 than 39 years old in real age and unable to show his class of youth.

The whole strategy and approach is wrong I’ve been saying it for years recent test cricket evolution requires a new aggressive approach not just to win matches but to win the fans again with this new approach and by selecting a half decent spinner home wins will come again away wins in SENA will be tougher but you can make a plan for those series too.

That’s the problem with Pakistan cricket people who aren’t involved with the team can do a better job than those in charge when that happens you know something isn’t right.

When Haroon played cricket there was no DRS color kits slower bouncers wagon wheel ramp shots, goes on to show how much PCB is aligned with modern cricket

Najam Sethi has no vision at all. Look at him, not playing ODI against Afghanistan and playing T20Is instead in a ODI WC year.

I watched the press conference, he had no clue at all. Why would you hire 75 year old administrator? There are so many to pick from.

Must give respect to Haroon Rasheed. Give him at least 2 years on the job. Can't do any worse than Mohd Wasim

Same as Indian Chief Selector Chetan Sharma.

Probably a case of others making the decisions and Haroon just agreeing to those decisions.

This is very unfortunately going to be the case. He is there to pick up his salary and do what others tell him to do.

Sethi is not looking for any big personalities or upstarters under his reign. He wants to squeeze all of the juice out of the PCB in peace. We have seen this through the scrapping of the ODI series with Afghanistan, the appointment of Shan Masood as VC and now Haroon Rasheed as a "yes man" selector.

No doubt Sethi benefits personally from all of those decisions. I am already questioning his intentions only a few weeks into the role.

Haroon Rasheed cannot be any worse than Mohd Wasim

CS may be irrelevant position in other countries, but in Pak the scarcity of talent makes it the most important one. When you have limited pool of talented cricketers, it makes your job tougher than ever.

Chief Selector isn't the problem. Your players' lack of ability is. Anyway wasn't Haroon Rasheed the one who discovered Waqar Younis all those years ago. Seems to have an eye for talent? :inti

Speaking in an interview, Haroon Rasheed

“You have to see which players can fit in your current combination. In fact, we also have to see if such player [Malik] can play any specific role in an important event, which can increase the possibility of Pakistan winning"

“However, if a young player performs the same role, it can be debatable.”

“But I have kept my position open regarding this topic and have not formed a specific strategy. Once my selection panel is formed, we will come with a specific selection policy"

While in essence its a fact that players at disposal make a huge difference however, selectors, coaches etc have a huge impact on the overall setup.

Otherwise if its all about the players then why would anyone change selection committee, coaches and other things. Of course they make a difference as well otherwise why setups change them?

Point is that whatever resources you have, the aim is for them to be used at an optimal level and positions that are not able to achieve that at some point of time or another are naturally replaced.

Haroon Rasheed will end up doing a more competent job then the over hyped Mohd Wasim who was a collasal dissappointment and a shameless yes man at the end.

Haroon is all set to bring back Malik.

:)))

One more from the dinosaur's era.

looooool at bringing back Malik. Dude has literally never done anything of note in WC events but "eXpErIeNcE" is so precious I guess. Players must be shaking their boots if they don't have some old man on the team.

It's a shame Pakistan has this mentality of always going with tried & tested and then saying we've run out of ideas without trying anything new.

How seriously will the Pakistan selectors take the results of PSL to decide on their next T20 squad? NZ are touring Pakistan for 5 T20Is in April so this could be a good test.

I think the Afghanistan T20 series is between the PSL and the NZ T20 series, so should definately select PSL performers for that!

The new Selection Panel led by Haroon Rasheed, have started deliberations on Pakistan cricket team's selection for the upcoming T20I series against Afghanistan in Sharjah.

As per the reports, it is said that a few players, including Azam Khan, Imad Wasim, Ihsanullah, and Osama Mir, are under consideration to join the team due to their exceptional performances in the ongoing Pakistan Super League (PSL). Additionally, there is a proposal to rest some senior players and give young cricketers a chance.

Hooooraaaayyyy

InshaAllah Rizwan is ‘rested’. Maybe he can go to Haroon Rashid and ask to be rested with 2-3 witnesses, and then give a press conference about it!

Happy now?

I am a bit concerned though because Afghanistan is a tough T20 side. We nearly lost the last few games against them even with our bench strength.

My heart will not be able to cope with a loss against them simply because of how their players and fans behave.

Yes very happy but I want to see it first. InshaAllah all the Dosti/yaari club is rested

So what if we lose? It’s not the end of the world. They will beat us if they deserve to beat us. They deserved to beat us in the 2021wc and the 2022 Asia cup. With our ‘full team’. So why not? They have world class T20 bowlers. What’s there to be ashamed about?

As per a media report:

Haroon Rashid's brief tenure as Chief Selector is expected to come to an end soon.

According to details, the newly-appointed Pakistan Team Director, Mickey Arthur, intends to have complete control over all team matters, including the selection of the playing XI, and thus, desires to form a new selection committee.

Arthur has assumed a powerful role as director and is expected to make important decisions in the coming days.

Alright Big Mick

Let’s see these important decisions and I will be the one to judge them fairly.

To be honest, Haroon is a safe PCB option. A guy who won't stand up to his bosses and won't cause any issues for them.

I'm surprised that they are looking to replace him actually.

They’re handing everything over to Derbyshire coach Micky Arthur. The senile old man Najim Sethi is letting a man, who is employed by another organization run the PCB lol. Micky will be watching domestic matches on YouTube trying to understand which young players to select and will be making strategic decisions via Zoom at the tea and drinks breaks during Derbyshire games. Najim Sethi has lost the last marble that was still in his brain. He looked disheveled and senile during the last press conference. I wouldn’t be surprised if he’s suffering from the early stages of dementia.

This is good development for Pakistan cricket, hope Micky stays in this role for some time .
