Has the Pakistan Olympic Association been hijacked by Gen. Arif Hasan?

The Pakistan Olympic Association (POA) elections are later this month. Retired Gen. Arif Hasan is up for election for a 5th consecutive term. Apparently he's changed the electoral college to accommodate all his own people to vote for him.

He's also altered the POA constitution and gotten rid of Article 5, which has taken away the Head of State's powers as patron of the POA. Gen. Arif now has unchecked authority as the POA President as well as absolute domination over the election process.

In the past he has violated the Pakistan Sport Board's two term limit, which had been reaffirmed by the Supreme Court. This led to the government forming a parallel body in 2012, but by 2014 Gen. Arif was once again recognised as president of the POA.

The general is also said to have a writer from The News, Abdul Mohi Shah, on his payroll. The writer sings the general's praises and shows him in a very positive light while the state of the POA is in complete disarray.

Recently, there was also an allocation of 150-160 million rupees for the national games in KPK, however, barely any money seems to have been spent on the event. The government's hands seem to be tied by democratic safeguards in the POA constitution and this looks like a very similar case to that of the PFF and Faisal Saleh Hayat.

Is there any department in Pakistan that has not been hijacked by the military?

More importantly, why is a General the head of Pakistan Olympic Association?

Pakistan main Fauj ki bahot mauj hai. Lagta hai country citizens ke liye nahi, fauj ke liye banayi hai.

Thread isn't about IK. On topic please.

Does anyone have any knowledge on the situation here? As with PFF and PHF, it looks like the organisation is extremely corrupt.

He was appointed in the Musharraf era but has continued on through the next two civilian governments. I don't think he has as much clout in the military anymore as he's been retired for a long time. He's running the show in his independent capacity.

But I don't understand how he's managed to retain so much control of the association even when the government and supreme court have ruled against him and set up a parallel body in the past. Him being the Vice President of the Olympic Council of Asia since 2007 might have something to do with it.

I'm just trying to understand the situation further and seeing if anyone has any knowledge of what's going on here.

The Generals in power are reluctant to mess with those who used to be Generals, as many current Generals will also one day retire and carve out their own little kingdoms. It is a form of "pay it forward".

The military doesn't like to mess with it's own unless its forced to do so. But the military is quite cosy with the current government, and I have it on good authority that senior members of the government have been trying to remove this guy. That's why Gen. Arif altered Article V of the Pakistan Olympic Association Constitution.
