South Africa batsman AB de Villiers has once again grabbed the top position in the MRF Tyres ICC ODI Player Rankings while Pakistan’s Hasan Ali has emerged as a new number one among bowlers in the latest ranking updates carried out on Friday.

An astonishing knock of 176 by de Villiers in the second ODI against Bangladesh in Paarl, which consisted of 15 fours and seven sixes and came off only 104 balls, has also helped South Africa edge India at the top of the MRF Tyres ICC ODI Team Rankings by taking a 2-0 winning lead in the three-match series.

The latest rankings, which take into account the first two matches of the South Africa-Bangladesh series and the first three matches of the ongoing Pakistan-Sri Lanka series in the United Arab Emirates, sees de Villiers climb to the top of the ODI table for the 14th time in his career.

De Villiers, who has leapfrogged Australian David Warner and India captain Virat Kohli, had first attained top position on 30 May 2010 and the number of days he has spent at the top is second most after retired Windies great Vivian Richards. De Villiers has now been at the top for 2,124 days while Richards was number one for 2,306 days.

Other batsmen to move up include Pakistan’s Babar Azam (up two places to a career-best fourth position), the South African pair of Quinton de Kock (up three places to fifth) and Hashim Amla (up two places to ninth), and Bangladesh’s Mushfiqur Rahim (up five places to 18th).

Among bowlers, Hasan Ali’s haul of five for 34 in the third ODI against Sri Lanka in Abu Dhabi, which his team won by seven wickets for a decisive 3-0 lead in the five-match series, has given the pace bowler a big boost in ranking points.

The 23-year-old, who has taken nine wickets in the series so far, has moved up six places to become the fifth bowler at the top of the ODI rankings this year after Trent Boult, Imran Tahir, Kagiso Rabada and Josh Hazlewood.

Outside of the top 20, Sri Lanka’s Suranga Lakmal (up three places to 36th), South Africa’s Andile Phehlukwayo (up 30 places to 52nd) and Bangladesh’s Rubel Hossain (up seven places to 61st) are the other bowlers to move northwards.

Pakistan’s Mohammad Hafeez is back as the top all-rounder, edging Bangladesh’s Shakib Al Hasan. Hafeez, who first attained top ranking in January 2013, has reached the top spot for the ninth time.

Meanwhile, India will be looking to wrest back the top spot in the team rankings when they take on New Zealand in an upcoming three-match series.

South Africa and India are both on 120 points with South Africa ahead on decimal points. South Africa can reach 121 points if they complete a 3-0 series win over Bangladesh but India will overtake them if they win the opening match against New Zealand, to be played the same day as the last South Africa-Bangladesh match, on 22 October.

If India win that match, they too will be on 121 points but ahead in decimal-point calculation. However, India will have to win the series against New Zealand 3-0 to retain the top spot should South Africa win the last match against Bangladesh.

Amazing. He absolutely deserves it. He's performed marvelously and the rankings show it.

And this should put all the "Rankings are biased", "ICC = BCCI" to rest. The mere fact that he jumped 5 places to Number 1 is huge.

Just to put into perspective, Babar Azam's rating points, this is the first time Javed Miandad that a Pakistani batsman has gotten 830+ points. and 800+ first time since INZI. Highest points by Pakistanis in ODI's.
Best ever ODI rating points: Pakistani Batsmen

Well done Hasan. You are a champion.

All that tough training and no slack from your elder brother is worth it :)

Win us the WC'19 now :hasan :babar

Mubarakan!!

do the stars indicate provisional rankings?

I'm sure babar is not in provisional stage anymore but hasan will be- which is great news because his rankings will boost further with no downside I believe.

Or is that for test only?

Somebody please clear this up for me?

One of the main reasons why Pakistan has been able to stifle the opposition to <250 for quite a few games in a row now. Reinforces the value of good bowling in middle overs. Hasan Ali has been a revelation.

Well done to Hafeez as well. Excellent work from him - just needs to clear this test thing!

Congrats to Hassan but For Pakistan , Babar's acheivement should be considered bigger.

He is also the most unexpected bowler to reach the top ranking. Batsmen will have no choice but to treat him with respect now.

Where is shoaib malik?

Hafeez under threat once again.

Well done but not the job done.

lol Malik? what your not happy that he is one of the greatest cricketers of all time? minor ratings like the above do not affect the overall ultimate awesomeness of Malik...

Good both Hasan and Babur are breath of fresh air for Pakistan.

I hope they keep the upwards progress and stay honest, humble and hardworking.

People use those excuse when they can't come up with things to make an argument.

Fantastic from Hasan here.

But but but Starc looks so awesome in the 10 ODIs he plays in a year :sree

Reaching it is one thing, greatness is maintaining a high ranking.

Indeed what about hafeez. As soon as he starts bowlimg he returns to odi number 1. And people say he shouldnt be in our team?

Hafeez should be banned, chucked his way to #1 to all rounders, shouldn't be acknowledged at all.

Good on Hasan.

He's going to clear it with a clean action and then go back to chucking  he's done this before

I don't think it works like that. You need to bowl with the same action as you do when you play. Hafeez's new action against Aus was very different to his current one, which seems more of an amalgamation of both.

I think he'll get banned.

Point is that if they keep giving chuckers more and more chances.

You can remodel your action if suspected, then go play in a high prodile tournament while chucking and get reported later, already causing damage.

It's extremely unfair to clean spinners back in Pakistan playing domestics who are honest cricketers, and other teams.

If caught again then the player needs to be banned from bowling, period.

Rankings are usually better than pure stats tbh. They take more things into account and a reflection of a player's current output. They do take into account how many matches you play (and if you're on and off again or frequently injured it's going to hurt your ranking, but then again someone who can play every game consistently and keeps himself injury free is more valuable to the team). But think the rankings say 1-10 for bowlers are pretty accurate as most of those bowlers play consistently. And for batsmen probably 1-20 maybe even more is accurate.

I don't see how people say the rankings are biased towards India lol, they're done via calculations. There isn't an extra 50 points they add on if the player is Indian rofl. Same with the ICC team rankings.

Indeed what about hafeez. As soon as he starts bowlimg he returns to odi number 1. And people say he shouldnt be in our team?

The funny thing Hafeez also recently got the record of the most balls bowled without a no ball in ODI cricket. The irony :))

Good on Hasan.

Its not his fault. The moment he chucks the authorities should be onto it.
Football managers these days ask their players to dive, waste time, take a free kick or throw on as many yards forward as they can. Its up to the ref to stop it!!

If he chucks and is called at the end of the game , that would be it. His is a borderline case as it is so no need to go after the guy

Brilliant Hasan.. Can't wait to see him bowl in SA. Hopefully fully fit Amir/Hasan/Rumman/Junaid.. Need 2 more for bench of 2019 and we have a solid chance.. Keep doing the hard work!!

Congratulations Hasan.Really deserved it.Exceptionally consistent. An exceptional talent. Pakistan should have introduced him 2 years earlier.
It's a shame that Hafeez is a no 1 all rounder!!!!!!?!

Chief Destroyer

4 overs from Hassan up front, 3 in the middle and then 3 at last.

If Hassan opens, he won't be able to bowl in the 11-20 over period where he is so deadly. We don't have anyone else who can do as much damage in the middle phase of the innings while Amir, Junaid and Raees are doing a pretty good job with the new ball.

It's a good thing that Sarfaraz knows this too and won't be changing a bowling attack that has been on absolute fire.

That's how minnows think. If he's gonna become a complete bowler, he has to open. Hasan is a better new ball bowler than all the trash opening ahead of him.

Beg to differ.

When he is adding on the pressure in the middle overs by not just containing the opposition but also talking wickets what else do you want ??

Why change it and which bowler is going to replace him in the middle overs that keeps taking wickets like him ?

I actually agree with you many times on PP but not here.

I want him to grow into a complete bowler which he is. Sarfaraz also needs to grow a pair and back him to open. Once he gets accustomed to the new ball, he will provide early wickets which are more damaging than letting the openers settle and then taking wickets. I'm aware that the current trundlers(3rd and 4th options) can't do what Hasan can. That's why I want Bashir and Ehtisham in the team who will sustain pressure in the middle overs. Hasan's overall development is more important than what the team needs short term.

Congrats <3
I would like to see him open the bowling but in the best interest of team he is better now in the middle overs.. 90% of the times our opening bowlers are taking 1-2 wickets in first 10 overs and imo even if Hasan opens the bowling he would add may be 1 more.. but the job he is doing the middle overs taking 2-3 wickets on average, none of Shinwari, Rumman or Junaid can do this..

From what i have seen he is a true team player and dont have any hard feelings about that.

Huge congratulations to him. Long may it continue!

Congratulations to Hassan. Brilliant bowler and brilliant achievement.

Can't believe people were comparing this Legend to absolute dross only a couple of months ago

There is a reason why some countries can't produce a FAST BOWLER to save their lives - You guys just don't know how it works !!

Alright, pipe down the hype guys. Need him to stay humble and keep working hard. This is just the start.

I thought Malik will be at least in top 10 but he is not there, wondering why?

I really hope that Hasan stays there for a long time and silence his critics🔥

This is why he should be opening ahead of the others.

The best ODI bowler in the world. Would love to see him opening the bowling. He is always looking for wickets which is one of the main reasons he has been so successful so far.
