Haseeb Hameed: ‘Nottinghamshire have helped me fall in love with cricket again’

Horrible horrible that gap during today's dismissal was bigger than the Titanic. This guy would struggle to compete in QEA trophy dunno how he has made it to the top and represent England!!

England needs Malan to open and slot Vince at 3. To be very honest England team is very low on morale and performances and when next generation batters fail to live up to their hype (Zak, Pope, etc) it becomes a nightmare.

For the coming English season the selectors would do well to stick with the following set of players as these are frankly the best they have got in their lot.

- Zak Crawley
- David Malan
- James Vince
- Joe Root
- Ollie Pope
- Ben Stokes
- Jos Buttler
- Chris Woakes
- Ollie Robinson
- Mark Wood / Jofra Archer
- Jack Leach / Any other spinner

There is no point sticking with half glass empty players like Bairstow. England in the past have tried to turn part all-rounders into test match players but this never works out in the long-run. We have seen the likes of Moeen Ali, Buttler, Bairstow, etc never fulfilling the potential of test match player. England would do well if they invest in players like Pope, Zak and Vince as they have potential to make it big in test matches. It would also be good for them if Buttler retires or is replaced by another keeper.

Lack of suitable alternatives.

He has been quite ordinary so far.

I remember his debut Test. He did well there. But, he is struggling in Australia.

Has survived till Stumps - big day ahead tomorrow.

9 and out.

Drop this liability.

He’s simply in the team as a token (asian) player to appease the liberals and woke viewers.

Hameed's scores after 4 Tests in this Ashes series:

25 (75)
27 (58)
6 (21)
0 (6)
0 (10)
7 (31)
6 (26)
9 (58)

Average of 10, SR of 28.

Rory Burns will replace Haseeb at Hobart I think.

Haseeb Hameed's last six knocks:

6&0
0&7
6&9

He looks totally devoid of confidence and runs

Hes had a good enough chance, there cant be any complaints, better to take him out of the firing line for now

I mentioned in another thread that I dont believe he is even county division 1 level never mind test level.

I feel quite sorry for him as he been thrown to the wolves, he genuinley is not good enough and has already suffered severe set backs in his career.

He should be allowed to play County cricket and low pressure lions tours for 2-3 years, playing him in international cricket will destroy the little confidence he has left.

Unfortunately he doesnt have a limited over game, so its FC cricket or bust for him and he needs to be protected so he can at the very least make a living.

England need to be more positive. Crawley showed the way. Bairstow should be pushed to open.

Robson needs to be recalled for the next series.

Decent knock from him in the context of the result, lasted 58 deliveries!

He can play the deliveries and survive, but what he struggles to do is actually score.

There’s a parallel with Geoff Cook, who flew out to Australia in 82/3 on the back of a century in the Gillette Cup final, and was promptly eaten alive by Lillee, Lawson and Thomson.

He never played internationals again.

Boycott and Gooch had been banned and England struggled to find test class openers to replace them.

Really hoping that Hameed gets a fifty in the next test and prolongs his career.

Wouldn't even make a Ranji team in Gujarat - where his family originally hails from.

Simply not good enough. Bats like a night watchmen, just as Sibley did before him. How much would England lose if they let Buttler open to hit the ball. The chances are that it won't work but it can't be any worse than the dross served up by Sibley, Hameed and Burns

Not surprised he's struggling in Australia, he plays with low hands and on Australias bouncy wickets it's no wonder he knicks off.

Simple question. What's the point of sending someone out there who doesn't have the intent to score. At the end of the day runs are what matter, you can block all day but if you don't score it means zilch.

I would give him the last test also, but change up his game plan. Just play some strokes, if you can't strike a balance , go back to county and work on that.

Keep Bairstow in the middle. He has proved that he can score there. Don’t sacrifice one of this side’s few batting strengths to plug a weakness.

Bairstow has played 80 tests in the middle order and still averages 34. That's enough of a sample size to show he isn't going to become a 45+ batter after the recent century. I think his game is suited to opening in tests especially outside of England. He has a good enough hand eye coordination to hit the new ball across the boundary.

Lets focus on the positive, I think the second part of your sentence is a problem for the entire batting line up :yk

A baby lamb sent to Australia for slaughter bit harsh isn’t it to then get rid of them altogether, opening down under is never easy. It would have been better for him had he sat this one out

He needs to play Limited overs cricket of both varieties to get some intent back in his batting. At the moment he looks to be busted blush

Like the young Atherton being kept away from the tour of WI.

Is his dream over? Not part of the West Indies bound Test squad.

Guess time for him to regroup and scores some County runs and see if he can make a comeback.

Only a miracle will give Haseeb another comeback in the England team

Not really Its not as if england are blessed with top great top order batters

However the best thing for him would be if hes not picked for a couple of years which will allow him to learn n better his game

Ok — perhaps a bit premature on this one.

He won’t be allowed back unless he makes significant improvements in technique and temperament though.

Hameed will be fine as long as the wickets are not hard and bouncy.. He is fine for English conditions.

They slaughtered him and threw him under the bus by taking him to Australia and making him open or come one down.

This home series against NZ was the best to get him better transitioned into the international test arena in a much better way.

Hmmm.

With Crawley on his last legs.

Wonder if there is a way back for Hameed.

Only thing is that his playing style and strike rate don’t suit the “BazBall” philosophy.

I do like Hameed. If he gets a decent score in tests he’ll be away. He should benefit from the BMac-Strauss regime too.

Is Strauss still involved? I believe he was interim and handed over to Rob Key.

The McStokes partnership might be able to get the best out of Hameed, could give him some much needed confidence at the top level.

Bafflingly sent to India where he performed admirably then thrown in to an Ashes when England bring on a hammering to nowt?. He's not played a single test at home!

Stokes aye, not Strauss, same letters at start and finish :))

He did play against India at home. Mixed results.

But England have a new head coach and new captain now who are winning plaudits and winning Test matches, and if Hameed was recalled they would surely help him.

Think he played 3 Tests and got a couple of fifties (and a couple of failures)

Par fir the course then and been worthy of a proper shot. Always feels like his place is in jeopardy yet Crawley given a guarantee regardless of terrible performances.

Par fir the course then and been worthy of a proper shot. Always feels like his place is in jeopardy yet Crawley given a guarantee regardless of terrible performances.

Crawley has already been priced in. McCullum openly said in an interview that he sees Crawley as an inconsistent player who will play a match-crucial role in 1 out of every 4-5 Tests, and aside from that his form can be accommodated (ie in a good team he can be carried).

And to be fair McCullum was right about this — Crawley had a very quiet 3 Tests against New Zealand this summer; then came the India match, where he took 6 important catches in a variety of fielding positions and was then the junior half of the thrilling 100 partnership with Alex Lees, which threw India’s bowlers and captain into disarray & broke the back of England’s record run chase.

Crawley will now keep his place for the South Africa series at the very least. Next chance for Hameed would be this winter- if it comes.

McCullum and Stokes back players to the hilt, perhaps even to a fault. It is one of their key tenets. So for the record, if Hameed does come in, then they will back him for a good few series.

Probably deserves to feast on Pakistani pitches. Ben Compton too

Problems with both unfortunately.

Hameed has regained his form and scored his runs in CC Division Two, which is quite a low standard — there is already enough of a gap between CC Division One and Test cricket.

Compton has no international level experience and in the second half of the season his form went completely off the boil after a great start.

Pakistan is a huge tour for England and not one for experimenting — they will go for continuity unless someone is kicking down the door for Crawley and Lees’ positions.

Jennings might be a shout.

Haseeb Hameed has signed a new two-year contract with Nottinghamshire, which will keep him at the club until the end of the 2024 season.

The opener enjoyed a fruitful 2022 campaign, finishing with the second-most runs in either division of the LV= Insurance County Championship with 1,235.

In 24 First-Class innings, the 25-year-old scored seven fifties and four hundreds, finishing with an average of 58.80.

The vice-captain's spell as the leader of Notts Outlaws in the Royal London Cup, meanwhile, yielded 309 runs in eight innings – an average of 51.50 – including a ton and two half-centuries, as his side qualified for the knockout stages.

“Although I have only been here a few years, Trent Bridge feels like home for me, and I am really grateful for the way I have been accepted and supported since arriving,” Hameed said.

“My confidence has grown a great deal, and even in the last year I feel like my game has developed to the point where I played better than ever.

“Those results wouldn’t be possible without those who have stood by my side and helped me, but also the culture around the club in general, which has allowed me to thrive in a relaxed, yet focused environment.

“I have always said I want to be a multi-format player, and to lead from the front through performances in the Royal London Cup was really pleasing, too.

“I enjoyed the chance to captain the side, and I am grateful for the way the lads got behind me in what was a good campaign for us.

“Moving forwards, my attention is on ensuring the club continues to progress on the field.

“Days like our win against Durham in the last game of the season at Trent Bridge are very special, and we have a great opportunity to repeat that success in all formats next year, and beyond.”

Hameed initially arrived at Trent Bridge in the winter of 2019/20, having made his debut for England aged 19.

Since then, he has scored over 2,500 all-format runs for Nottinghamshire, averaging 47.52 in First-Class cricket, with 14 fifties and six hundreds, and 52.00 in List A cricket, having played ten innings.

“Hass had an outstanding year, especially when you take into account the challenges he faced in the winter,” Nottinghamshire Head Coach Peter Moores said.

"I think his performances have been a real indicator of his mental strength and resilience.

“Over the course of the season, he adjusted and adapted his game to become more fluent at the crease, putting real pressure on bowlers from ball one.

“His form in the County Championship was consistent throughout the campaign and the way he played gave confidence to everyone in the team.

“Along with his red-ball runs, he did an outstanding job captaining the Royal London Cup team whilst continuing to lead from the front with the bat.

“It’s great news that he’s extended his contract. He is a great role model for others at the club in the way he goes about his business, and he will play a huge role in the team moving forward.”

Haseeb Hameed feels he can fit into the attacking style of Test cricket that England are playing under Ben Stokes and Brendon McCullum.

The opener's strike-rate in his 10 Tests to date is 32.02 and his previous defensive approach earned him the nickname 'Baby Boycott' in a nod to former England batter Sir Geoffrey Boycott.

However, Hameed's strike-rate for Nottinghamshire in the County Championship last season was 62.40 and he says scoring more briskly has been his focus since being dropped from the Test team after the 4-0 Ashes thrashing in Australia in 2021-22.

The 26-year-old, who will captain England Lions' red-ball side in Sri Lanka later this month, said: "I came back from that Australia tour and was clear how I was going to go about my game: look to score runs at every opportunity and accept the fact that everyone gets out.

"We [England] went into our shells a bit. We got a bit defensive, a bit 'survival mode' and as a result we all suffered.
"Now it's almost like, if in doubt you take the other option, you try and put the pressure back on them. You take the positive option and you'll be backed for it.

"That's a key change in our cricket system in general. The interesting thing for me is it coincides with a similar shift that I've made at a similar time.

"You have your typical Test match opener, which is what I was trying to play like before, but there is also a side of me - which maybe a few more people have seen now - that enjoys hitting the ball.

"Especially against some of the best bowlers in the world you're going to face good balls that will get you out, so the other balls you may as well try to cash in, score runs and put the opposition under pressure.

"That is what I've tried to do. I took that into the season with Notts and it was a good season for me.

"The way I look at things, I had one bad tour but a lot of very, very good players have had one bad tour. Why can't I get better? It's happened, but it's not the complete journey. I'm not 35, 36.

"I've got another 15 years of cricket left in me. I'm hoping a long period of that is playing international cricket for England, that has never changed."

England have won nine of their 10 Tests since Stokes succeeded Joe Root as captain and Hameed says he will look to follow the senior skipper's example when he leads his country's second string in Sri Lanka.

The former Lancashire batter added: "I'll have my own style of course, but the brand that Stokesy and Co have implemented is now the England brand, whether you're with the Lions or the Test side.

"This whole idea of playing to win and being prepared to lose the game in order to win, 100 per cent I'll try to replicate that.
