'Sends A Wrong Message': India Pacer Under Fire For Not Keeping Roza During IND Vs AUS Champions Trophy Semis

Team India's star pacer Mohammed Shami faced criticism from Muslim cleric Maulana Shahabuddin Barelvi for not keeping 'Roza' during the holy month of Ramadan, calling the act 'criminal'. Shami is currently participating in the ongoing ICC Champions Trophy 2025, where he is spearheading India’s bowling attack in the absence of Jasprit Bumrah.

Notably, Shami's bowling has helped India reach the Champions Trophy 2025 final, where they will face New Zealand in the title clash on March 9 (Sunday). Shami's standout performance in the tournament came against Bangladesh in India's campaign opener where he claimed five wickets. He also bagged three wickets in the semifinal against Australia.

In an interview with ANI, Maulana Shahabuddin Razvi Bareilvi, President of All India Muslim Jamaat, criticised Mohammed Shami for drinking water during a Champions Trophy match in Ramadan, calling it a violation of religious duty and labelling Shami as a 'criminal.'

"...One of the compulsory duties is 'Roza' (fasting)...If any healthy man or woman doesn't observe 'Roza', they will be a big criminal...A famous cricket personality of India, Mohammed Shami had water or some other beverage during a match. People were watching him. If he is playing, it means he is healthy. In such a condition, he did not observe 'Roza' and even had water...This sends a wrong message among people. By not keeping 'Roza', he has committed a crime. He should not do this. In the eyes of Shariat, he is a criminal. He will have to answer God," Maulana Shahabuddin Razvi Bareilvi said.

I have seen soccer players playing soccer while fasting. Cricket is a much easier sport than soccer (less running).

It shows how physically unfit and spoiled cricketers are compared to soccer players. :inti

Anyway, it is Shami's personal choice.

Poor chap is attacked from all angles , Molvis for not fasting and hindu extremists when he goes for runs .

It's his choice.

Many sportsman do fast, it's not too hard . Didht Amla score a triple century while fasting,?

Think fast bowling is tougher while fasting.

'What Shami Did Was Right...Shameful To Attack Him': IND Pacer's Cousin, Childhood Coach Amid Fasting Controversy

There should be no shaming of Indian pacer Mohammed Shami for his actions prioritizing his country and his duty, whilst still abiding by the very beliefs he lives by, stated the pacer’s cousin and childhood coach, amid the controversy that has left many puzzled.

Shami was brutally trolled on social media after visuals of him sipping on an energy drink during the Champions Trophy semifinal clash against Australia went viral at a time when Muslims worldwide are fasting for Ramzan.

Most practising Muslims fast through the day, but the visuals suggested that Shami skipped the fast to stay in the game for his country, which didn’t go down well with some people.

But, despite all the backlash, Shami’s family and childhood coach came to his aid, defending the pacer’s actions as crucial for his duties to his nation, stating that he shouldn’t be ostracized for the same.

“He is playing for the country. There are many Pakistani players who have not kept ‘Roza’ and are playing matches, so this is nothing new. It is very shameful that such things are being said about him. We will tell Mohammed Shami not to pay attention to these things and prepare for the match on March 9," Mumtaz, Shami’s cousin told ANI.

“I think those who are saying anything have no understanding of Islam. This child is playing for the country. He is not playing any local matches… If he is playing for the country, then what is the problem?" Shami’s childhood coach, Badruddin Siddiqui, asked while speaking to PTI.

In the match against Australia, Shami played a crucial role, picking up three wickets- that of Cooper Connolly, a set Steve Smith, and Nathan Ellis.

In the absence of ace pacer Jasprit Bumrah, Shami has led the pace attack by example, scalping 8 wickets so far in the tournament, the second-highest in the 2025 Champions Trophy, and will be pivotal against New Zealand in the final on March 9.

Many of these Maulvis look like they never skipped a meal themselves. :inzi

What someone does is his personal choice. Shami is an athlete paying for his country. If he feels that him doing fasting is going to effect his performances on the field, then he should be hydrating and eating to keep up his performances.

Think fast bowling is tougher while fasting.

10 overs isnt much. Playing football or basketball is tougher but most muslim players can do it, some say it enhances their performance. I've done workouts at the gym while fasting, most of its mental and if you drink plenty of water before and after its not too difficult. It's up to the individual, their life.

This I don't understand from muslims, you can't Force it upon others. let people build their relationship with Allah swt and islam there are way too many Muslim robots converting others into Muslim robots

So this Maulvi says according to Sharia Shami is a criminal. Thankfully Shami lives in India.

The only thing Shami has to worry is brutal hell punishments that are awaiting Shami. It is pretty graphic.

"I Might Be Wrong": Harbhajan Singh's Honest Verdict On Mohammed Shami-Roza Controversy

All India Muslim Jamaat President, Maulana Shahabuddin Razvi Bareilvi criticised India's marquee pace bowler Mohammed Shami for not observing 'Roza' during Ramzan. Shami was spotted consuming an energy drink during India's semi-final in the ICC Champions Trophy against Australia. The visual triggered an unwanted controversy, as some people started to ask how Shami skipped his 'Roza'. Former India cricketer Harbhajan Singh has reacted to the row, saying sports and religion should not be mixed together.

I think I just want to say that this is my personal view-I might be wrong or right. Sports should be treated separately. People who feel religion is playing this role or that role, I think it's fine to kind of do your routine, what you do in your religion. But people expecting Shami to do this or Rohit Sharma to do this or any XYZ to do this or that during a certain period (is not fair)," Harbhajan told India Today.

Harbhajan defended Shami's act, saying it is important for a sportsperson to keep themselves or herself hydrated while playing.

"You might be doing it because you are sitting at home or doing your own routine work. But when you are playing as a sportsman, if you don't keep yourself hydrated, you might collapse," he added.
"And of course, with the kind of heat they are playing in, I think they need to drink water. They can't go through the game without having a drink or a snack. It's your body, after all-you need fuel."

"People who are commenting about it, all I can say is it's their personal thing. Shami or others, I don't think they will be worried or bothered about it."

Earlier, Bareilvi stoked a controversy by calling Indian cricketer Mohammed Shami "a criminal" for not observing 'Roza' during Ramzan.

Badaruddin Siddiqui, the childhood coach of Indian pacer Mohammed Shami, also defended the star bowler.

Speaking to ANI, Siddiqui defended Shami, saying, "Whatever Shami did was right, and there is no need to pay attention to these things. He should focus on the final match and forget all these things. He has not committed any crime, he has done all this for the country. Personal things can be done later but the country comes first...I request everyone not to say such things and stand with the entire team."

Earlier, speaking to ANI, Maulana Bareilvi had said, "By not keeping 'Roza' he (Mohammed Shami) has committed a crime. He should not do this. In the eyes of Shariat, he is a criminal. He will have to answer God."

Maulana Bareilvi said that 'Roza' is one of the compulsory duties and anyone who doesn't adhere by it is a criminal.

"One of the compulsory duties is 'Roza' (fasting)...If any healthy man or woman doesn't observe 'Roza', they will be a big criminal. A famous cricket personality of India, Mohammed Shami had water or some other beverage during a match," Maulana Bareilvi said.

How is this even news ? This maulvi has no business whatsoever here. It is Shami's call what he wants to do . What is this criminal nonsense ? Religion is a guideline - not something thats to be followed to the T. How irrational are folks ? Looks like the maulvi eats biryanis and has no concept of fitness exercise etc. Such a bane , these so called maulvis. Shami should say to the maulvi - shut up dude , none of your business, keep your nonsense to yourself.

Shami is a sportsperson representing his team, club, country etc etc .And his obligation is to perform to the best. Following religious rules are not laws. Thats why you need universal laws for all - or else folks like these will keep insisting on this stupid nonsense.

They have no job. This is the best they can do. Ensures their job security. More fall in line, more secure their food & shelter gets.

Indians are not used to harsh Dubai weather, obviously they have to keep themselves hydrated to last through an ODI match else they will cramp badly -especially a fast bowler. Why bring religion into everything?

Theses molana should stay away from sportsman . Who the hell he is telling others what to do or what not to do.

National duty is above these useless religious things .

:kp

I agree with your first line

and for the second: Who the hell are you telling others religious duties are "useless things" and should be below national duty?

You summarized your own hypocrisy really well in those two sentences.

so an indian cleric makes a dumb statement in India, what has this got to do with us?

Why post it here?

Whether a sportsman fasts or not, should be none of our concern, but when a player not fasting is celebrated, that is sad.

The fact that Indian news and fb pages posted pics and vids of Shami drinking fluids during fasting time in Ramadan and celebrated this seems like the celebration was less about the fast, but more about how Shami went against his religious obligations for Indian natioanlism.

Now what is right or wrong in Indian nationalism? If you violate any Islamic teaching that is celebrated but what i you violate a hindu teaching than what?

There was no need to have this as news, but when you do it seems like Indians are making this an India vs Islam issue.

Exactly.

The fact Indians are happy about it shows all you need to know about them. This is not about Shami's fasting or not fasting; this is about their Islamophobia.

Like you said - it is his choice.
Pathetic to see people react on this!

Sami likely wanted to fast but imagine the abuse, death and even rape threats hed get if he bowled poorly and borat lost the match ?

Hindutva fans are defending him against one molvi but never do when their own brethren abuse him

1. its none of the clerics business, high moral ground hand waving is the most obnoxious trait some religious ppl have
2. He has paid to play cricket. If he believes he cannot adequately perform that job if he's fasting, then it's a binary choice, and given that he's committed to playing, it makes sense not to fast.
3. yes, exercising in a fasted state is good, but im pretty sure nearly all the evidence is talking about water fasts, afaik exercising in a dehydrated state is dangerous and serves no benefits.

to each their own, mountain been made of a molehill tbh.

Shoaib Akthar is a masculine dude. I fully expect him to bowl 150+ KMH for 10 overs while fasting.

Indians tend to be feminine and timid. Playing/training while fasting is something they don't have the gut to attempt. :inti

Indians should check benefits of physical activities while doing dry fasting. There are health benefits provided it is done correctly. See below:

It’s easy to sit in Canada in spring and preach when you are not the person affected nor are a doctor/ fitness professional.

And regarding Indians being feminine and timid, we all have seen who is timid as soon as the national cricketers step into the cricketing arena.

Shami is being attacked by many muslims in social media. In 2021, when some hindus attacked him for underperforming, captain Kohli took a stand. Also that thread went multiple pages and we got to hear how intolerant India has become etc etc.

Now no statement either from Rohit Sharma nor this thread is getting any traction.

#Hypocrisy

Here's great Hashim Amla scoring a brilliant 300 while fasting: :inti

It is Shami's personal choice. The clerick has no business interfering in others business. I think that is the topic of this thread and not to showcase how many athletes played while fasting. You agree with the clerick?

Amla was not fasting when he scored 300. He himself clarified it. It's only ever overzealous dimwits who spread such nonsense.

PIA pilots advised not to fly while fasting

"During fasting, attention and decision-making ability decrease, reflexes begin to slow down, stamina also decreases, so after considering all the factors, it is clear that flying while fasting is not only harmful to you but that of others too, in the aircraft and on the ground."

It's his choice whether to fast or not, why do such Muslims naturally assume other Muslims are faithful followers and need to be? Whether they are or aren't is their choice, can't stand such molvis or day to day people who have hijacked religion and always judging other Muslim. Live and let live and mind your own business

I agree with your first 2 points but exercising while fasting is not dangerous if you are an athlete or someone who is used to excersing and fit. I enjoy going to the gym, even cardio when fasting sometimes, it pushes you esp your mental side. It also has various benefits such as increased weight loss, helps level out blood sugar and others.

ill concede on mental benefits if you wanna train like that and want to develop discipline and it not being dangerous for a trained athlete, however, theres not much evidence that there is any scientific benefit to limiting your water intake for 12 to 16 hours afaik. yes theres some evidence for dry fasting initiating ketosis and detoxification, but nearly all these cycles take around 20 hours to initiate, and come with the usual risks of dehydration-related issues.

It's true that Shami is an ambassador for India and Indian Muslims. He is representing those masses on an international stage. Small kids are influenced by him.

The least Shami could've done is to not drink or eat in public on field in front of the cameras. I'm surprised he didn't followed this protocol.

Says who? The guy with a player's name in his own username? We all have our favorites, so don't single him out and label it as man crush. :inti
