Amazing, deep, brilliantly made horror movie. It’s been years since a horror movie actually scared me and I’ve seen every good one over the last few years. Already watched it twice in the theatre. The last few years have been good for horror but this was honestly the best

This has been getting rave reviews, and I only really want to watch horror films when they are quality, so they are few and far between. Not the type of film I usually go to watch in a theatre, but will definitely watch it when it comes on Sky.

There have been some surprisingly good and innovative horror movies over the past decade but that’s a different discussion

Aliasad, since you are the one who has recommended it, I will give it a try though I don't have high expectations from horror movies.

If I get disappointed, I'll blame you for wasting my time.

Go ahead

Lots of small details I could only notice on the second viewing. Love when a movie literally tells you how it ends but you don’t realize it

Just watched it on the big screen. Really liked it though I won’t call it the best horror movie to come out in a long time. There have been several good ones last few years and this is a great addition to them.

It’s a slow burn which I liked but the gore factor could have been raised up a notch in my opinion. Toni Collete is the heart of the movie but at times I found her acting to be campy and over the top. Really liked the boy/son’s acting.

First time directors are really bringing their game on. Get out, A quiet place and now this. Horror franchise has a great future it seems.

A few other ones I would recommend who prefer this style of horror would be:

The killing of a sacred deer
The invitation
Goodnight Mommy
The Witch
The house of the devil

I have been thinking about the movie and its influences. Like any good horror movie, it has managed to dwell in some of the most known and almost cliched horror tropes while also creating something unique. I can see inspiration from old horror classics like The Shinning, Rosemary's baby etc.

Some of those tropes I noticed in the movie are:

Attics (or basements) are places for discovering horrible things, truths, monsters etc.
Communicating with dead people using the squeegee board or moving the glass etc.
A bird slamming against a glass window is always an ominous sign
Old journals and picture books always come in handy in the climax of the movie
Clues to solve the ultimate mystery of he movie are given throughout so on second watching the audience can pick on them and get amazed to how everything fits together
The evil spirit looking for a suitable healthy body to occupy
Creaking of floors, the sounds of closing doors
Use of dreams as metaphors
Any many more...

I think the movie's most unique thing is its production and set design, the miniature set pieces especially are amazingly detailed.

One of the best horror movies I've seen, the finishing stretch could have been a bit better it wasn't too satisfying but I get what they were going for. But I do love this style, it is my favourite in the horror genre and there's always room for so much depth. The musical score throughout was outstanding!

Sorry bro but it seems like you hyped it up too much for me. It was average at best.

Depends on what your definition of horror is..no jump scares = not scary for most.

I saw it, it was really interesting and different, eerie is the word I'd use to describe it.

Watched it, very interesting plot instead of random jumpscares. Couldn't sleep for the next 2 nights because it was on my mind. It combined the subtlety of paranormal activity series with good storytelling.

I posted a review earlier straight after watching it and said sth like it was a good plot but not that scary, I was freaked out to say the least lol.

I want to watch it but none of my friends want to watch it :sanga
