the first laguage is dutch
nederlands dus praat jij nederlands/flaams or french/german

i m fluent :

Urdu , read and write
punjabi . can read but its headache to read it actually in urdu nastaleeq.
english read and write.
Pothwarii ( as i lived my life in pindi)
hindko ( its just another accent of pothwarri)
paharri( murree area)
Quite a bit of hindi as have some friends from india here also .

a bit of Finnish ( as i have been living here for 4 years now).



But no language is more expressive ,poetic and romantic than urdu .
I just love it. When spoken with ahl-e- zubaan its a real pleasure.

I love karachi actors specially talat hussain .His accent is very good .

First of all Alhamdulillah, Thanks to Allah SWT who has teached us these languages.

I speak

Punjabi
Urdu/hindi
Pahadi
Norwegian ( with norwegian i can live and work in Sweden and Denmark as sweedish and danish are much like norwegian)
Deutch (its been many years since i learned it now but i still remember a little bit)
English ( I struggle with english as i only use it when posting here or reading papers on web. Sometimes this limitation prevents me of expressing what i really want to write)
And like many many many others I can read Arabic, but I don't understand it so much.

Urdu is one of the most flexible language in the world, it can absorb words from any language in the world.
urdu is basically a turkish word meaning LASHKAR / army
it originiated in delhi and agrah where lashkars / army men from different parts of the world speaking turkish, arabic, persian, sensikrit resided.
as a result of amalgam of different languages it came into being.

what i like about urdu is , that you never struggle with accent of english or as a matter of fact any language of the world.
I have seen arabic guys never comfortable with english accent!

Well i m not a linguistic expert but i do love arabic for its the language of QURAN.

and if we go by ur logic what can we say about hibrew as it was the language of bible .
Indeed arabic was the most rich language of that area in that time .And may be it still is .

My friend its not necessary to bring religion in light hearted and fun topics ,as its like taking all the fun away ,,and we know religion is no fun .

great. i learned it when i was in class 8, with typing, typing still remains with me, but completely forgot shorthand.

how do you use it? is it rather of any use in todays world, or has it ever helped you any where???
 
1) English (speak, read and write)

2) Afrikaans (speak, read and write)

3) Urdu (speak, read and write)

4) Arabic (read mainly the Quaran and understand a bit but cannot speak Arabic)

5) Xhosa (speak and understand)

6) Zulu (understand but cannot speak the language)

7) Dutch (understand but can only speak it in an Afrikaans accent. Afrikaans is a contaminated version of Dutch)

In the "old SA" we were forced to take english and afrikaans. I grew up and did all my schooling during that period.

Isixhosa i have been attempting to learn for about 6 months now!! Difficult language to speak with all the "clicks" etc.

Ek kan jou taal praat. jy praat van die nuwe Suid Africa maar ek dink dat niks het verander. Meeste van die swart and kleurling mense is nog baaie arm.

Wit mense stem vir wit partye 'n swart mense stem swart partye.

Wit mense steun rugby and swart mense sokker.

Wit mense dink dat alle swart mense is diewe and swart mense dink dat alle with wit mense is rasiste.

Daar is twee ekonomies in Suid Africa, swart mense bly in derde wereld toestande and with mense in eerste errste wereld toestande.

Only English, Urdu and Punjabi.

Some guys on here.......pretty impressive. I have enough trouble using the above mentioned to try and learn anything else although I did German in school. Oh and of course can read Arabic.

As for me, I know only Dhivehi and English. I can recite the Quran, though. And I can also understand some Hindi, at least the Hindi of Bollywood.

i have a dream to learn Urdu, Farsi and Arabic. bit of a distant one,mind. :ajmal

1. English - pretty self explanatory :D
2. Urdu - Language spoken at home, can read a bit of it if I put in effort :D
3. Potwari :aamir - I can understand it, and then give a reply in urdu
4. Punjabi - Understand it, speak a little bit
5. French - Understand, speak and write (obviously not as well as English!)
6. German - Same as french :D
7. Arabic - Can read but not understand or speak

Would like to learn:
1. Pashto = :afridi :gul
2. Arabic - sounds beautiful when spoken
3. Farsi/Persian
4. Italian - cited as the language of love/the most beautiful language in the world :D
5. Spanish - Hola :D

I will get there.........eventually :D

I'm pretty sure French is the language of love.

Anyway, I can speak, read and write English, Urdu and Punjabi. I'm also learning French at the moment.

ik woonde al vroeger in België omdat ik in Louvain-la-Neuve studeerde maar ik woon nu weer in het Verenigde Koninkrijk waar ik ben geboren. :)

I used to know some very very basic limited Spanish.I wanted to learn the whole language but I'm not good at languages and so,without practice,i forgot it.:(
I also knew some Japanese words because i used to watch Naruto a LOT.But due to lack of time coz of studies,i dont watch it anymore.
Maybe I'll remember them when I watch it.:P

Zulu is is. Xhosa is the most difficult language to learn as you need to click your tongue. See video below

Ja, ek het afrikaans in skool geleer.....en dit is nie 'n baie maklik taal nie. Baie dankie vir jou kompliment! Dit is my 12th jaar in Suid Afrika, maar ek het afrikaans begin leer 3 jaar in die gelede. Ek het Sesotho studier voor afrikans

10 years. I was born in Rawapindi but after my parents died my uncle from Kenya looked after me and when I completed school he sent to the study in South Africa at the university of Cape Town. I graduated in Cape Town and I am still living in Cape Town. It's my new home. I simply love the place.

ok, i have been her 2 years more than you i seems.....but you are a fast learner it seems.....you seem like a good afrikaans speaker. did you study language arts or something in UCT? I really wanna come to UCT after next yr, but I guess i will have to rot in UKZN.....maybe pietermaritzburg or durban, but Capetown would have been my first choice, as its the best.

No I did not study language arts. I learnt it from books .Afrikaans in the is the first language of about 70% of the people of Cape Town and so it's it's to practice what you have learnt :)

I love Cape Town because it's so Cosmopolitan. It's Africa, Europe and Asia all in one city. It has the largest muslim population in Southern Africa of about 3 million.

Will your parents not allow you to study in Cape Town? UCT has many students from Pakistan.

My parents are fluent in isiXhosa (as well as most of my family and schoolfriends from the farming community).

One of my schoolfriends had the claim to fame of taking Makhaya Ntini under his wing at hostel and teaching him english. As they both spoke a common language.

I last studied isiXhosa in Grade 5 and don't speak it enough. I only know certain words or phrases now.

Personally I am fluent in english and afrikaans (studied it as a first language HG, but am not of the language). The business world is an english world so let's not complicate things. :)

There are numerous languages that are a bit readable to anyone who can understand afrikaans i.e. dutch and maybe german.

My goal in linguistics is still to master an african language. :13:

hmmm, afrikaans as first language? Did you study in the Free State, or around joburg? One thing i know is that in the university of Bloemfontein in the F State, most lectures are in afrikaans...

You must have still been sharp in languages to have learnt it from books, i on the other hand have had a hard time trying to learn afrikaans..btw my afrikaans teacher is a Malai-Indian mix from CT. I am also trying my best to become fluent in it....but this is my 3rd yr doing afrikaans, for the previous 9 years i have been here, i did french and sesotho.......But i found out that reading the "huisgenoot" magazine daily does also help in learning afrikaans.

UCT has many students from Pak, but i will be concidered a "durban wala saffer" not a pakistani lol.....my parents dont like the idea of me moving out of durban to study even to maritzburg...i seriously doubt they will let me come to CT....but everyone simply loves the place, i wanna see it too, i have been to lot places in SA, but never to CT weird!

Naah, from the Eastern Cape. It did have it's benefits i.e. ended up at a bi-lingual varsity. I've had afrikaans girlfriends as well, but to be honest that is a culture shock. Haha. (I am a serious soutie if you know what that means!).

Just convince your dad that UCT is the best university in Africa and I am sure parents like to give their children the best education.

and Yes Malay Indian mix is very common in CT
 
My parents always abuse me for not knowing Pushto atleast. Kheir its only English and Urdu (can speak but cant read) for me

My dad was born in abbottabad and grew up in peshawar but he was originally from karachi, and he can also speak pashto and i do envy him, i tried to learn pushto but gave up hope too soon :(

He knows it is the best, but maybe if i was a guy they would have let me come to CT but i vant do anything about it as a girl can I?

and as for the malay indian thing...i got lots of coloured friends like that here in durban too, but most of them have atleast one parent from CT.

Think of it more as if english is your first language.

The real definition for soutie or soutpiel is the nickname in afrikaans for an englishman. It basically means they have their one foot in England, their other foot in Africa and their "piel" in the sea thus it has salt on it. You can use your imagination what a "piel" is. I think it is quite a funny term and doesn't offend me. (i.e. it is basically for people who's genealogy shows a family tree from the UK, I am a real mixbreed of nationalities).

There is also the term "rooinek" which basically means "red neck" i.e. englishman get sunburnt easily.

You also get terms what the english have called the afrikaans, like "dutchmen", "rockspider" and "clutchplate". People take these terms too seriously tho.

cricket_fever the best way to learn a language is to completely immerse yourself in it. hang out with native speakers and make it a point to only use that language. this shouldn't be a problem for you since you're already in South Africa. unless where you are Afrikaans isn't widely spoken? and like you mentioned the magazine, also try and find movies, music, books in that language as that will help a great deal as well.

Yes in afrikaans it means the skin that gets circumcised. Most non christian africans circumcise.

3. French (passably)

I can also speak Urdu! I know one phrase that RA taught me.

"Indian phir ro rahe hain"

Cape Town is gorgeous. It's the only place I've ever been to in the world that I reckon has more natural beauty than Sydney.

Si, vivo en Cambridge pero soy de Pakistan. Hablo español porque lo tome en la universidad, y tambien vivi en España por un tiempo. Que haces en Waltham, eres estudiante?
