So I recently got a job for the first time (fast-food restaurant).

And I have earned about $800-1200 USD.

It's way more money than I have ever seen in my life (I'm only a teenager).

But one problem with me is that I don't know how to spend money.

I am a boring guy with no interests/hobbies.

So how should I spend my money?

Start a 401k plan and start investing that money. The earlier you start the better.

Save it.

Especially if you're starting from $0.

Investing is a nice plus if you're comfortable with the idea. But it's good to have available funds in hand instead of having them locked away in a 401k plan (I'm assuming there's a penalty to withdraw money similar to Canada's RRSP).

I'd recommend saving up to $5000 before you consider investing. Over time, you'll never have the luxury of saving as much as you do now. Take advantage of it!

The fact you even asked this question puts you ahead of most teens. :))

Lmao, you tagged one of the most money irresponsible people out there. I blew off my last paycheck to buy 3 or 4 hawaiian shirts.

401 k plan would be good, but I think even better would be to save up for college. Costs build up in college real fast. Utility bills, groceries (unless you have a meal plan), rent if you are off campus, textbooks, etc. I need to get my act together as well.

Donate some part of it. 10 percent is a feasible amount.

I would recommend saving 30-50% - you will need it for college/apartment/travel etc. type of expenses later on.

The rest - try to spend on what you need. First focus on something that you have that needs replacing or is broke, e.g. clothes, shoes, appliances etc. Entertainment and other spending comes later..

I don't know, man. When I first started working I spent a lot of time scrolling through Amazon but honestly, you're better off saving. I don't like spending money anymore unless I'm at a restaurant with friends. I don't think that's too unreasonable?

I would save it. I always save money which eventually comes in handy. People assume I'm rich but I'm just frugal and good with money.

However, when I was your age, money was so hard to save. In Pakistan theres a trend of giving your friend's treats every now and then and that's what I always spent my money on. Or my girlfriend at the time.

Put 50% in some savings , the rest spend it on your self .

if its your first pay , I would recommend buying something for your mom and dad .

Be careful of freeloading friends, treat them once in awhile but not regularly.

If I were you I'd save 50% and blow the rest on food and clothes.

There is an upward trend in tech stocks, put your money in it. Should give you good short term returns

Use this money to land any other job even part time or paying peanuts as long as you are working will save something

Save the money. I am sure you live with your parents considering you are a teen. So if your living expenses are covered, save all the money. You will need it in the future. If you do not live with your parents and you are on your own, only spend the money that covers your living expenses. Save the rest for cloudy days.

Give it to the poor Uncle/Auntie in Pakistan so that they dont have to work while you slave away. Failing that, give it to our Nigerian friends to invest. I have done that and i will be rich soon!

Hmmm thanks for the advice guys.

Of course I will save some/most of it.

But don't know how to spend the rest...

Get something for your parents. Treat your absolute closest friends. Get a good haircut.

My main goal in life is to travel; go to the places I have never been to. Few places are left in USA that I really want to explore; then I will start tackling Europe & Asia one by one.

Wish I had started hardcore traveling much earlier but I guess it's never too late.

Bought these in white for $100. Not sure if it was a wise decision, but I'm not that experienced in terms of using money.

Save 60%, spend the rest on creating some interests and hobbies so you are no longer a boring guy :D

how old are you?

put a portion of it aside for personal entertainment, because there is no point in earning money if you cant spend it. But try to save as much of it as possible.

Depending on your age you could put it to good use.

My first job as a teen was a fast food employee as well. Minimum wage at the time was $5.15/hr. I used to make $600-700 /month. it was not enough. I planned to move on and not work fast food for the rest of my college life. End result was I was out of there within 3 months to a better paying job. Moral of the story: be on the lookout for better opportunities so if it takes a little investment, put that money aside towards it. Be it a vocational training class or a small business, etc.

Life in fast food does not teach you any skills except how to work hard till you go bow-legged.
