What's new

How would people react if Vijay Shankar makes it to Team India?

Play Pant against England fgs. I don't have a good feeling about that match if India don't do something about their middle order.

Pant can play only on flat pattas. Did you see how he batted against moving ball during England Test series. It was painful to watch. Now pitches have life and Vijay Shankar is better than Pant on this kinda pitches. Plus he is a better fielder and can bowl his medium pace too.

He is the right talent being backed

Kohli knows more than you guys

He is basically the new, Irfan Pathan. Not good enough to be a leading bowler nor batsman. Like Pathan, India are foolishly trying him out as a batsman. He can only be used as a Sanjay Banger type player, useful runs at the backend of the game, and filling in some overs as bowlers....

Irfan had a lot of talent though.

His overs are not needed if they're gonna play Pandya and Jadhav. Both definitely are way more deserving than him anyway.

Dinesh Karthik or Pant are capable of winning us at least one game at some point. Shankar will not even get us close if it were only up to him.

Pant has two overseas centuries fgs.
One of them was against starc, cummins, hazlewood, lyon in australia.
You have zero proof of your claim.Ms dhoni has 0 centuries and pant already has two

Are u serious?
That guy was insanely talented and still has better stats than afridi in both formats of the game.
his odi bowling avg was 29 and batting avg 24
tests:batting avg-33 bowling avg-32.

Irfan had the novelty factor, but yet, India "foolishly" thought of him as a No.3 batsman, and he played many games there. So instead of polishing his main skill which is bowling, India wanted that extra (bonus) thing from him. Same case for Vijay where India is asking the extra thing from him which is being No.4 batsman.

Actually, Jadeja would be a good comparsion with him. I remember in one T20 world cup, India foolishly played him as the No. 4 batsman. It's a similar case with Vijay, despite having better alternatives (Kartick, Pant)

I dont know much about this guy. All I know is everytime I see him bat:

- He cannot bat
- He cannot bowl
- He cannot field

However one thing he consistently does:

- The typical Indian shake of the head.

Now to the question:

- How is this clown in the team ? Is he related to one of the selectors ?
Can an Indian fan give me some details on how this guy makes the Indian side ?

Apparently he was selected for his 3 dimension playing all of which as you already said he cant do..

How many overs did he bowl actually? If Virat Kohli isn't going to give him a ball how will he prove that he can bowl well? He bowled better than Pandya against Pakistan. Under these conditions he should bowl more otherwise there is no point of selecting him. :inti

Did you even watch those two series in full? I have and both the times he scored the runs when the pitches were flat as road. The England Century even had Kl Rahul at the other end scoring one.
That England series have enough proof of how he struggled when the ball was moving around.
On pattas, he can whack Starc and Co. But can he do that in these conditions is the qn.

Lol comapring to rahul..on same pitch he made 100 ,didnt likes of kohli ,pujara fail? Why choose and comapre ? If u wanna compare with rahuls runs why not compare with others failures on same pitch? How will you know if u dont let him play for grandpa?

How will you know whether Shankar is a good bowler or not without even giving him few overs to bowl? He bowled well against Pakistan but didn't get to bowl after that. He deserves as many chances as Pandya to establish himself. :inti

Why does Shankar deserve so much chances? For scoring a 40 odd against Australia? He is only in the team due to injury anyway so he will get chances.

Who told you I prefer all those tattoos and stuff ? I don't care about that stuff. Anyone can see Hardik is a better player. Has better accelerate and more shot range with the bat. And also offers more with the ball. Lol even got 2 wickets against Afghanistan on a slow and low pitch.

I never said he was up there with those players. Who is now putting words in my mouth ?

Also Holder is good in tests but nothing speical in ODIs.

Oh my my Kashmiri bhaijaan give it a rest and don't pretend to be an indian cricket fan. Sadly you got exposed by one of yours

Its like Kohli is saying " Holy crap he took a wicket can you believe it"

Shankar is a dibbly dobbler.
Boycotts mum will hit him for six.
Viru bhai its good to trust your eyes sometimes, investing in every bits and pieces cricketer isn't a possibility, there are many such players in india.
Hardik pandya is the chosen one.

Not sure about Boycott's Mum, but Pak's Automatic selection got out in the very first ball and their kaptaan looked like a tailender while facing him. I don't care if Shankar is an average package, as long as he's winning games for India either with bat or ball, he deserves his place in the playing XI.

I don't rate him that highly but anyone is an upgrade over rayudu . This guy should have been given more chances.

There are better players than Vijay Shankar warming bench during street cricket in my mohalla. He should have some shame and immediately book a flight to Chennai for himself.

The pitch on which he scored century in england was comparatively flat but still it was a test match wicket and surely more difficult to bat on than these ODI wickets .
He scored 30 and 40s in nearly every innings in aus including the perth match,so he is more proven than vijay on tough pitches.

Yeah I saw that and thought that is pretty insulting for Shankar. He didn't give him another chance to bowl after that match even though he bowled better than Pandya. Not sure why was he selected in the team as a 3D player? :inti

You should embrace and emulate Pandya's swag and slickness on and off the field.

Yes for someone giving you important breakthroughs in much anticipated match, its a hoax to have him in team and not giving him the ball...
Kuch to gadbad haire baba

Getting his toes crushed by Bumrah again and again shows how poor a batsman Vijay Shankar is. Never looked cut for competitive cricket.

I would have taken your excuse seriously had Shankar got his toes crushed by someone like Hardik Pandya in the nets. :inti

Very poor batting technique and not much of a bowler either.
Though i dont want him in the Indian team,he has a good technique, temperament and even won matches for India A. Now he is out of form. Hope he finds his form after the worldcup.

Feel bad for Shankar though. He has played well against PAK and fielded well. Indian team's management has been in shambles and this tells us about their poor planning. It's hard on a youngster like Shankar. Hope he finds his way into the team soon with consistent performances. Why can't they kick our Jadhav instead?

He's not been dropped for his bad performance though. His poor technique got him injured by Bumrah's yorkers - twice. Should we continue playing him?

He was running around and carrying drinks yesterday. No way he can get injured 2nd time again by Burmah's yorkers in nets. This is just that the TM pressed the panic button after Eng's loss and playing with the emotions of players. Not impressed with Kohli's tactics.

So you are suggesting foul play by both Indian management and ICC?

Vijay Shankar actually contributed to a WC win. After Bhuvi got injured, if Shankar didn't step up with those 2 wickets, India could have lost that match.

It is so sad to see how fickle fans have become in today's age.

And btw, there's not much wrong with his batting technique. Yes, he didn't manage to score much runs. But that wasn't because of poor technique.

I wasn’t expecting to be given the ball against Pakistan: Vijay Shankar

RANCHI: The beginning of 2019 could not have been better for Vijay Shankar.

A couple of handy knocks against New Zealand and Australia in One-dayers had impressed the Team India management and the senior national selection committee, headed by MSK Prasad, so much that they had declared him as India’s No. 4 for the World Cup in England. Being just nine ODIs old and asked to be the fulcrum of the batting line-up, Shankar had a lot on his plate.

The dream, however, lasted just three matches before Shankar was ruled out of the quadrennial showpiece with a fractured toe, courtesy a Jasprit Bumrah yorker during a training session.

“It was a very disappointing time. Every player dreams of representing his country and so did I. It is hard to explain what I felt at that time. But then I can’t remain disappointed and depressed about it. I had to move forward,” says Shankar, who is in the city as part of the India ‘B’ contingent.

Instead of recalling those painful memories, Shankar chooses to dwell on the positive impact he had made during his short stay at the tournament, especially recalling his maiden World Cup wicket against Pakistan with his first delivery in the high-octane clash in Manchester.

“I was very happy with my performance (against Pakistan). Standing on the field when the National Anthem was being played was a great feeling. Honestly, I was not expecting to bowl when I was handed the ball, but in such a situation, I just tried to give off my best and bowl tightly. There was a little bit of swing on offer and I wanted to make use of that. It was an unbelievable moment,” says Shankar, who trapped Pakistan opener Imam-ul Haq in front of the stumps with a perfect in-swinger.

Even his 58-run partnership for the third wicket with skipper Virat Kohli against Afghanistan has left an indelible impression on his mind.

“Before coming back from England, I had a talk with the coach and the support staff and it was a freak injury that saw me miss out on the festival. Yes, that’s what the World Cup is. But I have to accept these things and what is destined to happen will happen. I’m not disappointed with how things have happened. I’m happy to contribute and deliver in whichever way I can,” says he.

Thanking his family and coach for standing by him, Shankar is not setting himself a target about returning to the national team. With Hardik Pandya out injured and a year left for the World T20 in Australia, Shankar knows there will be opportunities but wants to take it one tournament at a time.

“I don’t have a target in mind. Wherever I’m asked to bat, I’ll do that. I am happy to contribute in whichever I can. There is the domestic T20 tournament followed by the Ranji Trophy. So all I’m looking to do is to perform consistently,” says Shankar.

He sounded unhappy with media reports claiming he had an indifferent run in the just-concluded Vijay Hazare Trophy for Tamil Nadu, despite averaging 54.85 in ten matches.

this guy has talent. Would be better in tests over pandya. pandya is trash in tests unless conditions are helpful.

in odi if he can increase his pace he would still be useful. Not a bad batsman either.

Would make it to certain teams purely as a new ball bowler in ODIs. Got imam with a peach . Unlucky that he is playing for India.

But he doesn't have the x factor and has no fashion sense. He should never play again for India. We should give 100 matches to Pandya instead even if he fails in those. :inti

Please keep this guy out of any media coverage. Not cut for international cricket, and like Joginder Sharma, needs to be restricted to domestic games only.

But he doesn't have the x factor and has no fashion sense. He should never play again for India. We should give 100 matches to Pandya instead even if he fails in those. :inti

lol pandya. yea I know it's ridiculous. All these players get chances because they put ***** on seats. Players with marketing qualities will always be picked over talented ones. Not saying shankar is like the second coming of say a shane Watson but he deserves more chances.
barely even had any chances and when he did he actually performed well. for example he did well in new zealand away. he did well vs pakistan in the world cup. He is handy. needs more chances.

Allrounder Vijay Shankar may have fallen out of contention for a place in the Indian team but no one can take away his memorable World Cup debut from him. Shankar, who was drafted into the team as Shikhar Dhawan’s replacement made his World Cup debut in India’s match against Pakistan, and after remaining unbeaten on 15 with the bat, Shankar, when it was his turn to bowl, struck off the very first ball.

After bowling 2.4 overs, Bhuvneshwar Kumar walked off the filed due to an injured hamstring and Virat Kohli handed the ball to Shankar to complete the over. The first ball he sent was a half-volley which Pakistan opener Imam Ul Haq failed to connect bat to and was given out leg-before wicket. It was the perfect debut any India cricketer would have wished for.

“Yeah, that as well as making my WC debut against Pakistan,” Shankar told the New Indian Express. “It (the wicket) happened very quickly. The captain might sometimes tell you in advance but sometimes a bowler might get injured and you should be ready. That’s what happened. I was standing at point and Bhuvi (Bhuvneshwar Kumar) got injured and they just called me up. All I was thinking was ‘just bowl in the right areas’.”

But Shankar’s World Cup run came to a screeching halt when he sustained a toe injury in the nets after playing a mere three games in tournament. With Dhawan out, KL Rahul was promoted to open the innings with Rohit Sharma and the team management took a punt on him for the No. 4 spot.

“When you join the Indian team, it’s very clear. I know for a fact that if I play, I will go in at No 4 if there is an early wicket. If not, I will have to be flexible enough. I think that was very clear,” Shankar added.

Despite recovering to full fitness, Shankar hasn’t played for the Indian team since. He was part of the India A squad that toured New Zealand earlier this year, as Hardik Pandya’s replacement, and had a decent work-out in the second warm-up match, scoring a 41-ball 58. He was expensive with the ball before finishing the tour with a 66 against New Zealand A in Lincoln.

Shankar could have been given a second chance with the Indian team – this time in Tests with Pandya out – but the management decided otherwise. But Shankar hasn’t been losing sleep over it and is in fact, working towards earning a Test cap.

“I have been working on all aspects of the game and formats. I have been doing well consistently for India A, so all that actually gave me this call-up. If I had my Test debut, it would have been memorable but nothing’s over. I just keep trying to do my best to get my Test cap.”

Unlikely, he is 30 years old, bits and pieces in all departments and hasn't shown that he has the composure and patience to deliver under pressure.

India needs to revamp the team so that they produce more all-round batsmen rather than HTBs. Vijay doesn't seem like either nor he has the age and potential.

vijay actually did nothing. He was quite good vs pakistan and India dint lose much when he played to be honest. He contributed well n.z and australia in the 5 match series prior to the WC. Ofcourse india should have picked him and pandya together for depth vs n.z In seaming conditons he would have actually been quite handy with the ball and he can defend decently with the bat too. Perfect for the under 260 targets. india made a mistake imo.

unlike dubey he is not a scrub with the bat. He actually can bat quite well in test format. His A class stats is quite good too.

CHENNAI: Tamil Nadu allrounder Vijay Shankar may have only featured in 12 ODIs and 9 T20s for India, but the 29-year-old made an immediate impact on his World Cup debut game against Pakistan in Manchester last year.

In the marque clash held on June 16, Shankar became the third bowler in the ODI World Cup history to scalp a wicket off the very first ball he bowled.

Brought into the attack in the 5th over after Bhuvneshwar Kumar picked up a hamstring niggle, Shankar justified skipper Virat Kohli’s move as he trapped Pakistan Imam-ul-Haq in front. Later, Shankar also accounted for the then Pakistan skipper Sarfaraz Ahmed.

“I didn’t think that I would be given the ball so early in the innings since we were playing many frontline seamers in that game. But skipper Virat Kohli tossed the ball and it gave me a lot of confidence. I didn’t want to give any easy runs and getting the wicket off my first ball in my WC debut was super special. Winning that match made it a memorable one,” Shankar, who finished with 2-22 from 5.2 overs in that game, told TOI on Tuesday.

Shankar managed to score a run-a-ball 15 as India posted a formidable 336 for 5 batting first. Rohit Sharma led the batting charts with a 113-ball 140 laced with 14 fours and 3 sixes.

The Virat Kohli-led side went on to win the rain-curtailed contest by 89 runs using the D/L method. “I was happy to have chipped in with my contribution and that match will always hold a special place,” said Shankar.
