What's new

"I am Abid Ali, let me be Abid Ali and please don't compare me with legends"

Abid Ali needs to stay there until end of the day today - he has to emulate Shan.

Was granted a life on 7 when he was dropped at slip. But he's now thrown his wicket away to the spinner with a top edged sweep, departs for 20 from 46 balls.

Needs to be smarter with his choices during the match otherwise he will end up like the Akmals.

YK will need to work on his approach and discuss a clear batting plan as his batting technique isn't the issue here. Usually its the other way around for Pakistani batsmen in the UK.

He is right, he needs to be compared with Le jhunds like Akmal brothers and Shehzad...

You have to be bonkers to compare this flat track bully with a legend. Who was doing it anyway?

He seems to be the type of cricketer (the late bloomer in their early 30's) who get off to a rollicking start but the wheels can come off pretty quick. Not sure if he is the right investment here, the batting coaches need to act quick here and see what's going on otherwise we should look elsewhere.

Should have faith in a youngster going into a touch series. There's still a long way to go.

#PowerOfPositivity

Very much unimpressed.

Move Azhar to opening and bring in Fawad at 6 or Zaman to no. 6.

Schoolboy dismissal.

Basic trap set and he fell for it.

Sloppy stuff.

This guy is very overrated. However unless he fails a fitness test, Pakistan are stuck with him for a while, until his Batting Average decreases. Will be impossible to drop when his average is 74.

If Abid flops in the second test, Imam should be given a go for the third.

The dismissal was a horror dismissal. It's the sort of shot you'd expect Shahid Afridi to get out to, not your supposedly dependable test match opener.

I have said it before and will say it again. Imam-ul-haq is someone up for a fight and with bags of potential. Whatever you think of him, he's not one to meekly give up in the way Abid did in this innings. Imam would have always been in my starting XI.

Abid is really good on flat tracks and can be a good ODI opener actually for Pakistan. But at the same time, he is limited and age is not on his side. I actually rate him to the extent that he is someone who will do well in Odis and flat tracks so he should not be played all three tests to get discarded later due to poor average in the series. He will be a handful in the home series with South Africa and ODIs.

To be honest, he seemed to have weathered the storm as such but played a stupid shot.

He has the habit of feeling the ball and since he is an opener he will edge it nearly every innings. He was dropped by England early in the innings but still could not capitalise. Would not get more chances like that.
Tough to be an opener in England.

Dropped once.
A few through the slips.
Playing and missing.
And then a stupid slog.

So does Abid Ali stay or go for next Test?

Stays but he cant get out so poorly like that again

I thought hes experienced and had loads of fc matches under his belt? The last thing you do is gift your wicket like that in having seen off the new ball of anderson and broad

Abid does not look ready for England tracks but Pakistan should not play two left hand openers together. Today, the right-left combination worked in the first 10 overs as Pakistan rotated well. Two left handers will give Broad and Anderson the chance to bowl in a channel to both players.

100% if two openers are not Brian Lara and chanderpaul then keep it with the same combo Shan + Abid
If you don’t want to play Abid then play Azhar as opener and Imam at no.3

Don't expect him to get any better with age. Sami Aslam or Imam should replace him.

He doesnt seem like he can fight throw :narine tough spell he will be good in asain conditions but in sena he will be fount wanting may play 1 innings a series in sena

He will probably get another test match to rectify his poor outing last time. He needs to work on facing the short ball and taking his time at crease.

Shan Masood in the first innings, put a price on his wicket and went on for 156 runs and took his time. Abid needs to learn from that knock and take his time. He's not playing in Pakistan or UAE he's playing in and against England and pitches that offer a lot of pace and bounce, so limit you shots and rotate strike and take your time.

Just move on from him after this series. I don't see him doing much long term.

I think, he is very right - he can only be Abid Ali. Very good front foot player who’ll bat for hours on low, slow Asian tracks and butcher medium pace or spin by his patience but his overall game isn’t good enough for moving ball or if pushed to back foot.

The closest similarity I can think of was Akash Chopra or may be Wasim Jafar. PAK could have invested on him 10 years back, but sadly he should be put in the same basket of Fawad.

Banda dasso Yaar who compared him to legends. He is a FTB and he won't score in these conditions he should be dumped for good.Mr abid Ali you are not good enough.

Awkward situation where a 30 year old has to be treated like a baby because he is one of Misbah's late bloomer beneficiary school. Don't know what to make of him absolutely.

Under a lot of scrutiny from the last Test, but Abid has kept his place in the side, with Pakistan batting first. Needs to repay management's faith with a significant score.

The second one that got away - Burns, at second slip, drops Abid on 21...

One for the team?

He has been very lucky so far. But he must cash in like Shan did in the 1st test match after being dropped and edging so many deliveries.

Abid Ali taking the helmet off to celebrate a 50 with 3 chances...

Smh. Reminds me of Shezzy

Not becoming of his 71.40 batting average.

He is still new to international cricket and this is also his first tour in a SENA country.

It's fine, he has given Pakistan a good start. If they capitalize, they can put 300 on board and that will ensure their win. Magical stuffs don't happen again.

This is close to him scoring a 100 in Sena. Don’t see him getting to this score for the rest of the tour.

He is absolute garbage outside the subcontinent. When you have luck on your side & get so many lives...you make it count by scoring a big 100 like Shan did. Pathetic stuff from Abid.

As if Imam was tearing it up outside Asia. Same goes for Sami Aslam, Imran Farhat, Ahmed Shehzad, and countless other openers we've tried since 2000.

Stick with Shan and Abid combination for now - our biggest problem is the middle order, namely the acha bachas Azhar and Asad.

Abid Ali's scores since his debut in December 2019:
109*
38
174
0
16
20
60 (today)

He was all at sea today and yes, he hasnt looked good this tour but i wouldnt pass judgements about his SENA potential just yet. This was his 3rd innings in total playing in SENA. Everyone needs time

ATHERS spotted a slight flaw in a decent innings from Abid and says it ended up costing him his wicket...

"Most batsmen who nick the ball get caught off the fuller-length deliveries they get drawn into playing but when Abid got drawn into playing it was when it was short of a length, about hip-high, and he was fencing a little. I reckon he played and missed seven or eight times off the back foot and Curran got him out that way. He looks more comfortable on the front foot defending as in Pakistan when the ball gets slightly older it is not going to go sideways so you can hit through the line with impunity."

Things could be even bleaker for Pakistan if not for Abid, who made 60 before being dismissed: Mike Atherton on Sky

"He looks a good professional first-class batsman. He looks solid, compact. He is not that experienced in Test cricket but has played a lot of first-class cricket and knows his game. He is very neat on his hip and fine on the front foot. He knows what he is doing. You look at some batsmen and are worried about the moving ball but not him."

I'm sorry but there is no potential in Abid Ali to perform outside the subcontinent. None whatsoever. I watched him in the first test & watched his innings today..& he was fishing outside the off stump exactly like 1st test match. Not an ounce of improvement. When you get so many lives & luck is on your side you must make it count by getting a 100. You only get so many chances against a strong team very rarely...Like Shan Masood has learned after his big 100.

The way he hangs his bat outside offstump and pulls it away giving the impression he left the ball while he actually played a nothing shot is very "facepalm" worthy.

The way he took off the helmet after the 50 and then raised his bat in celebration has to be one of the most cringe on-field moments in Pakistan cricket and there have been quite a few I'm sure. Embarassing!

I had just seen the image on cricinfo first before reading the blurb and thought he had scored a quickfire century or something.

In the end we all can have opinions about someones technique or lack thereof but its their performances the middle that matter. Abids record since debut justifies a decent long run in the team before we can give a final verdict on his calibre.

As i said i agree he hasnt looked comfortable at all this series and even todays fifty was all luck. But this is his first ever outing in SENA. Maybe hell learn, work on his shortfallings and improve.

We dont exactly have a long list of exciting openers waiting in the wings either.

That's the point. There is an age limit to competitive sport, there is a reason most people are done by their mid thirties. Unless you are really good or keep yourself insanely fit. Abid falls in neither of those categories, he will most definitely be worse on his next outing overseas. Next we go to NZ. Good luck facing Boult and Southee in their backyard with that shoddy technique. Not to mention his ability against the short ball.

Abid simply doesn't have time to get better. This is the best he will ever be.

So a tough time coming for Abid Ali now.

Last big chance to show his worth.

Major technical flaws.

Most of the time he will struggle against the moving ball.

Fine on flat decks, but the likelihood of him doing well in Australia, South Africa and England is minimal.

Very very average player and a FTB at best. His record and average is very over-rated and his batting style is flawed in green tops and to a moving ball.

God knows how YK will dissect and adjust his technicalities in his batting but seriously this guy has no grit to battle and no determination to occupy and just work for the team.

Poor batting and a very average series.

Who was the guy who compared him to legends. Please name and shame such people.

Opening the batting in England is the toughest job against anderson. Him and Shan are the best openers Pak have got, they cant really do much better.

Posters use the term FTB so easily.
Players like Sharma,Warner,Dhawan,Sidhu,Hafeez,Roy,finch are FTBs not Abid Ali FGS.

He is not good enough. Don't care if he made a 100 a couple of tests ago. Not good enough and won't improve with age.

Would rather see Sami Aslam get a chance than continue with Abid.

I think in asain conditions he would be good but not in sena pluss hes to old so should have gone with someone younger

Abid Ali got a big job this morning to play a significant innings and help Pakistan save this innings. You'd think he would need to produce something in order to keep his place in the side.

Best chance he'll get to score some runs. This is the best batting track weve had this series, a somewhat tired England bowling attack and nothing to lose when it comes to the match situation.

I would place abid/shafiq/Fawad in the same bracket really. Players who will get runs in Pk/SL/UAE but will struggle most times on other venues.

Definitely has issues with the short ball - England have noticed it, as would have all other world class sides.

But, there is something very gutsy about him - maybe fact that he's waited so long that he puts premium on his wicket.

56 runs for Abid Ali for Central Punjab today.
