He should be compared with the worst openers that have ever played test cricket. Never seen someone so sacred of fast bowling
 
He flattered to decieve against sri lanka , needs to be history.

If fakhar was discarded after 1 series in South africa against a fired up steyn and rabada on tough South african pitches which are nightmare for even very good openers.

abid ali is continously being selected series after series and spectacularly failing , he can't even score on flat tracks at home.

Hopefuply Azhar opens in the next test, whenever it is and a year later Haider comes in with a good season under his belt, as a permanent fixture.
 
Looked short of confidence and technically and mentally poor during the NZ series, yet we decided to persist with him in this series, he was tail ender like in 1st test and no better in this 1st inns here either. Fact we picked just 2 openers in a 17 man sqaud when hes clearly not up to task was a poor decision.
 
Mental strength is 50% of the game.
We have not been able find an aggressive, technical correct and mentally strong opener.

Interesting to know that you feel Saud is too loose but Haider is fine for test level. IMO Saud is way more suitable as of now at least.
 
Well its not only Abid when any player is out of form everyone knows he isn't going to score but Misbah type people have their idiotic winning combination theory and also because he is trying hard to save himself.

Maybe it is time to slot Azhar back in as opener. Clearly these two are not getting the job done. And if they can't score in Pakistan. Chances are they will not be scoring outside Pakistan.

Which is why i said after a season or two.
By then I hope he improves his technique.
However, despite those technical issues which I have identified regularly in the past, he still has showcased strong grit and character in his first year of domestic cricket.
My problem with Saud is that I have not seen the same steely grit from him.
He has been a bit too casual and soft in the televised games.

Not a reason. U give five openers, Misbah would still play these two saying he can’t change the winning combination.

Nope you gotta be fair to Imran, look that’s not exactly a fair assessment after what 3 innings played, SA are never an easy assignment whether you play them at home or away.

Again we all did the same thing when Fawad failed in England, a test match or two is not a fair assessment of a player’s abilities. Gave patience to Imran but unfortunately and sadly Abid needs to be rested, I wouldn’t mind trialing Saud and Usman Salhuddin as potential make shift openers.
 
I am sure Imam ul Haq would have played much better than him.
Imam & Azhar should open next series.

Nope. Picking Butt was a colossal mistake to begin with, anyone with any sense could see it coming a mile off. Only fools would compound a mistake through pig-headed persistence. It's competitive sport, there's no room for sentiment.

Abid Ali is mentally shot, he's got one more innings at test level left.

There are no good options remaining, it's time to ask Azhar Ali to open for the foreseeable. The other opener can come from one of Shan Masood, Imam ul Haq, Saud Shakeel, and or Usman Salahuddin.

See i'm sorry that's wrong we are just recycling openers go back to the same old tried and tested failures, until Shan and Imam don't prove themselves they shouldn't get a shot because i don't know on what basis you are selecting them.

The opening slot is a real conundrum if you ask me, and there are no new openers out there that we can pick unfortunately we let Sami Aslam go and that was a big mistake.

The next opening combo after this should be Imran Butt and Abdullah Shafique (both of these guys need a proper trial). This is the problem with half the fans here, we nit pick after a couple of failures you must have patience for someone to perform and also acknowledge that even our legends couldn't score runs against SA. This is no Mickey Mouse bowling attack.

What is Imran Butt going to do? He has had one good domestic season and shown nothing that suggest he won't live up to his mediocre FC average of 36. I'm all for giving players rope when they deserve it, but Imran's selection was puzzling in the first place. If he can't show international quality within 4 innings, what is he going to show across the next 5 or 10?

Pakistani suffered by giving Asad Shafiq a stupidly long rope and we cost ourselves. He looks mediocre in domestics now because that's what he is and always will be. The same goes for Imran Butt until he can show otherwise.

Look it's unfair people on here call people off from 4 innings and i'm sorry 4 innings is nothing. Looking at his shots they looked nothing short of class, but honestly SA is a tough assignment for anyone new. Give someone a full chance that's what i believe, people on here as well as the media were quick to write off Fawad based on the England series and look at him now he's improving innings by innings. Experience is gained by playing more games, in order to win you must lose. If it's not meant to be for Imran then it's not meant to be but I'm not gonna knock the boy.

However, what i would wanna try is trialing a couple of middle order batsmen as openers say Usman Salhuddin- Kamran Ghulam or Usman Salhuddin- Muhammad Saad.

It absolutely is a fair assessment. Look at his dismissals. All 3 of them were soft dismissals. And that too at home where the pitches are flat and the South African pacers aren't nearly as threatening as they are in South Africa.

I'll give you that but still he's fairly young, we will always struggle to find openers to be fair. You still have the likes of Omair Bin Yousaf and Abdullah Shafique. However, if anyone has any suggestions for good openers i'd wanna hear it. I was contemplating whether we have Muhammad Saad and Usman Salhuddin open but again they aren't openers.
 
His 2nd inns in this test should be his last for a while. Out off form, technically poor and mentally not up for the fight.

This should be Avis's last test for Pakistan.He should be dropped even if he scores big in second innings.He is not an international level opener.

People said this about Asad Shafiq for the longest time lol. He was the master of finding runs at the brink. Yet it worked wonders for his selection.

I agree with that point of view completely. However, if he keeps performing like this there will be no choice left but to drop him. At the end of the day, there's just no excuse for not scoring runs.
 
Our next Test series is against Zimbabwe. If abid makes a match savings innings we will be stuck with him for at least one more year, as he will certainty pad his stats against Zimbabwe.

No, my problem is that selecting Butt in the first place was a mistake. Anything that happens after that is irrelevant. Doubling down on mistakes is illogical, you don't give players trials in the test team simply so that their feelings are not hurt.
 
Legend will get a scratchy 50 here, save his spot so that he can cash in against Zimbabwe

Legend is saving it for the zimbabwe series. He cant be bothered to preform against minnow teams like Sa when the all important bangladesh,srilanka and zimbabwe tours are incomming.

First 2 innings - 283 runs

Next 15 innings - 286 runs
 
This one can probably be the last innings of Abid’s test career as its not likely he can make a come back at this stage of his career.

Most teams quickly worked out that he cant play short ball. Take away his driving and leg stump shots and his runs dry up.

Most dissapointing thing is the lack of fight shown to tough things out and put a high price on his wicket.
 
The saddest thing is that this guy was getti my out to back of length deliveries in ENG.

Deliveries that could have been left purely on length.
 
I felt that after NZ tour Abid deserved the home series vs SA in that the last time he played at home, he scored heavy runs. He got his chance to re-solidify his spot in the XI, and unfortunately has failed in all 4 innings (4, 10, 6, 13). He's probably gonna be given the boot now, regardless of his fielding exploits this series.

There is only one solution to Pakistan opening: Azhar Ali

He is an okay batsman at one down anyways, and he almost opens coming in after one of our opener is gone for duck.

Plus, we have only some talented batsmen in middle order that could do better. No opener in domestics look any good.

No need for insults, he got his chance in the team on merit after performing well in domestic cricket for a few seasons, like many domestic players they eventually get moved on when they fail to make the most of their international chances.
 
Should have never been selected for the SA series in the first place - blame for the openers failures in this series is more on M Wasim than the actual openers

Given his very limited ability, Abid Ali has no business playing international cricket at this stage of his career
 
It's incredibly sad that Pakistan's cultural fetish for "seniority" is destroying the reputations of players who could have been good internationals had they debuted several years earlier.

Abid Ali is one.

But Fawad Alam is very much another. His two centuries since his recall show what might have been, but people are losing track of the mountain of failures that Fawad racks up between centuries.

Fawad Alam is basically failing TWICE AS OFTEN as he is making a passable score.

Pakistan need to pick players at their peak, rather than:

1. When their brief peak ended a year ago - Imran Butt
2. When they are at the geriatric stage - Fawad Alam.
 
Getting a test double century is no joke. Babar doesn't even have a test 150. Credit where credit is due, he played very well.
 
A 34 years old bowler, who is only playing his third match was able to score at nearly a run a bowl whilst just missing out on a century.

Abid abilities were all exposed against SA attack. This 200 just locked in few more series for him to fail.

I am hopefully that usman salahdun opens in the next domestic competition he's compact technique.
 
We are stuck with him for the next 2 years because of his minnow bashing. When he inevitably fails against better competition, he can still point to his inflated average.

Everything about this guy makes my blood boil. Celebrating half centuries against minnows with his helmet off like he just scored a 100 at Perth. It just sums him up when he thinks that he was being compared to legends. It's players like him which are causing Pakistan to be lightyears behind the cricketing culture India has developed. India has players that are smart, confident, well spoken and carry themselves well. We have jokers like Abid Ali who come across as having just walked out of their pind in Pakistan.

Wrote this when he was on top of the world . . Not surprised one bit at his failure . . other than his debut series against a poor bowling attack and a double 100 against ZIM, he has looked a total dud . .
 
Should have been dropped after pathetic performances away to NZ. should never play test cricket again.
