"I am happy to have played my part in the wins against England and South Africa" : Shadab Khan

Shadab Khan is glad he and his fellow leg-spinners from other teams are all making their presence felt at the World Cup.

Shadab himself starred in Pakistan's morale-boosting win over South Africa at Lord's on Sunday that revived their flagging hopes of reaching the semi-finals.

The 20-year-old took 3-50 as Pakistan — who made an impressive 308-7 — restricted South Africa to 259-9 for their second win in six matches.

For South Africa Imran Tahir, also a leg-spinner, took 2-41 in his 10 overs — a performance which Shadab said underlined the impact of leg-spinners at the World Cup.

“Imran bowled well in our innings so I thought that I will also get some help and grip and it turned out to be like that,” said Shadab.

The fast-rising star was rated as Pakistan's trump card by none other than World Cup-winning captain Imran Khan, now the country's prime minister.

When Shadab dismissed South African opener Quinton de Kock it meant he had reach the landmark of 50 wickets in his 38th one-day international.

And with the World Cup hopefully over the worst of the rain that has plagued the tournament's early stages, Shadab said: “When there is dry weather and the pitch is also dry, then leg-spin will come into equation. “That's why I am happy to have played my part in the wins against South Africa and England.”

He dismissed Jason Roy and centurion Joe Root in Pakistan's shock 14-run win against world number one and tournament hosts England.

Besides Shadab, India's Yuzvendra Chahal, Afghanistan's Rashid Khan, Tahir, England's Adil Rashid and Australia's Adam Zampa are all leg-spinners.

Tahir, the oldest at this World Cup at 40, leads the spinners' chart with ten wickets in seven games while Chahal has eight in four and Rashid seven in six matches.

Pakistan, currently seventh on the table after two wins from six matches, still have a chance of breaking into the top four that will go into the semi-finals from the 10-team round-robin group phase.

Shadab admitted Pakistan were in a must-win situation in all their remaining three group matches, starting with Wednesday's fixture against an in-form New Zealand in Birmingham.

Pakistan also need to lift their inferior net run-rate besides hoping other results go their way.

“We know the situation,” said Shadab. “We need to win our remaining three matches to harbour any hopes of reaching the semi-finals, but the confidence is there so we will be taking it match by match.”

After the New Zealand match, Pakistan play Afghanistan in Leeds on June 29 before concluding their group-stage campaign against Bangladesh at Lord's on July 5.

A happy Shadab is a useful Shadab for Pakistan.

He just needs a cushion of runs to defend - dont think he works well when pak bowl first

Hope he rips through NZ as well.... spin will be crucial against them. We would need pace against Afg and BD.

We all want to see that Shadab who can rip through batting lineups whilst maintaining a good economy rate.

ICC World Cup 2019- Shadab Khan bowled poorly vs New Zealand

Having seen santner creating havoc it almost compells me to say that

Show off was showing off big time after turning one or two deliveries. Being schooled by Santer and even Willampson. Very mediocre spinner. Pakistan must invest in specialist spinnerd post wc. Crime to let team like NZ post 240 after 85 for 5 on this pitch. Pathetic spin bowling by Pak.

Obviously he bowled poorly that mediocre NZ left arm spinner is turning miles on this minefield whereas shadab hardly looked good.

He got a lot of wickets early on in his career because he has a very good googly, but with more exposure, batsman have worked out his leggie isn't actually that good, and that is the really dangerous ball for a leg spinner.

It looks the other way. Shadab looks mediocre and Santer looks legend. Most our players like him Hasan and Imad are more of show off than their output. We used to laugh at Indian players like Jadeja back years ago calling them rockstars and now we have few in our team. Really pathetic to see these players not improving after getting so much praise from fans.

no two ways about this
....i am v v annoyed very poor captaincy..with shadab was very bad. Whats the point of imad if he cant spin the ball look at part time santner and williamson unplayable

Pakistan really missing a proper off-spinner. Would have been gold today and for the rest of the WC.

Let’s not forget Shadab was bowling to Kiwi batsmen and Santner was bowling to Pakistani batsmen chasing a score. Huge difference. Our batsmen have made Santner look better than he is. Same for Williamson..they haven’t bowled anything special.

Shadab was okay today but most importantly picked up the prize wicket of Williamson off a good ball.

Shadab was mediocre. Santner and Williamson were turning every ball while this guy was showing his teeth after one delivery turning after 3 overs.

Oh wow they were turning the ball so they were better. Both Santner and Williamson failed to get the most important batsman out which Shadab did. Issue with fans like you is you get hyped up by a few shots played by the batsmen or few good balls from bowlers.

Shadab’s spells against SA and NZ were not only important but crucial in our win. Not the same for Santner or Williamson.

He bowled too much down leg to the left handers, was good to the righties. Overall, still a good performance. You also have to remember that Santner bowled on a pitch that was 40-50 overs older. The footmarks really aided him.

Needs a fellow spinner(No raillu kattas!) playing alongside him. He will perform better, i just know it.

It amazes me to read the comments from some agenda ridden posters. Posters like MRSN was vocal against Sarfraz and appeared in every thread related to him when bad days were happening for Sarfraz, and now he cannot say anything against him he is now making up stuff for Shadab. Shadab got the prize wicket of Williamson with excellent bowl and kept it tight enough.
The pitch started taking more spin in second batting, and Pak were batting with extra pressure of must win game or go home.
Shadab has been nothing short of good with his comeback after illness. In fact he has hardly ever let Pak down in more than two consecutive games. He is a you g lad and will only improve with time and practice.

I have never seen more illogical post than this. So according to you a spinner who bowls full tosess and gets wicket is better than one who looked like taking wicket every ball and made 230 one of hell of a total to chase. The pressure created by Santner was so big that Hafeez played brainless shot against part timer to get out because Santner was not allowing any freebies. Sometimes good spinner squeeze batsmen and other bowlers get rewarded.

Hafeez wickets normally have nothing to do with bowlers. In the end Santner achieved nothing, bowling alongside Boult and Ferguson. Babar and Haris overcame him even though he had advantage of used pitch and Pak chasing for must win. Shadab did his job perfectly against some world class and experienced batsmen.

Again ends up with better figures than the counterpart leggie. We are too harsh on him.

Shadab lacks the control needed to be a frontline spinner. He gives one full toss per over and was not turning the ball on a dry deck as much as the opposition spinners. He should play two full seasons of FC cricket to develop his game but he seems more interested in playing every pyjama and chaddi league there is.

His SR of 68 with the bat is a joke yet he is billed as our premier "all rounder". I can't remember a single meaningful batting performance from Shadab in ODIs.
