"I don't believe in extension and will retire on due date (this year)" : General Raheel Sharif

http://tribune.com.pk/story/1033791...n-and-will-retire-on-the-due-date-army-chief/

Holy cow!

The General is retiring when his tenure comes to an end come November this year.

That seems to be a very selfless, and honorable decision however I believe Pakistan still needs him for another 3 years to close out Zarb-e-Azb, and purge Pakistan of all fundamentalist violence. It seems the nation has become very dependent on his leadership which is why I understand the rationale behind General Sharif's decision, he doesn't want the country to have a dependency syndrome and he doesn't want to define the army or the country, he knows that the army and nation is bigger than just one man and more important and that the country shouldn't depend too much on one person and invest all their hope, that would be disastrous but I do think he should seek an extension and finish the job and really cement his legacy.

Hope he takes an active role in either civil activism or politics after retirement, he could be Pakistan's General Eisenhower which is not unconstitutional at all.

BTW Who do you guys think will replace him? Which Generals are next in line?

BTW President Eisenhower led America Post-ww2 during America's boom years of the 50s.

If he does enter politics after retirement I can totally see him winning. The amount of support he has among the masses is huge

Wish he would stay longer - has done some great things for the country.

Of course his bosses at the Pentagon weren't too keen on the extension, as they were their able and compliant servant Kiani...

This will be good for democracy in Pakistan. I dont understand the obsession with Military Generals and Army in Pakistan.

Whats the news here? Everyone has to retire on the day of their retirement.
Lol @ people calling him selfless for following his retirement obligation, not that he is resigning for a better person.

And how is it his decision? Didnt his retirement date got determined the day he joined the forces!!

No Army general from Musharaaf to Kiyani does, that's the news here.

That's the level of expectation [emoji3]

It's a news and people praising an officer who says he will retire when he is supposed to retire.

It seems like he is deciding his retirement instead of the rules.

The problem with extending the good one is bad ones will take extensions themselves. So be careful what you wish for.

Pakistani politics still evolving from being personality cults, hence the surprise.

I think he will come into politics quite soon...Lets see which Party will have this sure shot winner.

Retirement has been a tricky subject in muslim countries since 656.

His retirement is half of the story, he is doing an excellent job against terrorists and he is ruling out extension despite being extremely popular which is a good news.

Not quite, Army Chiefs are eligible for a 3 year extension (which is legal) and was the norm for over 2 decades, so General Raheel's decision is surprising.

Eligible or not but the surprise here is he himself is taking decision ( to retire or not) instead of the government.

It gives a feeling if he wants he can give himself extension whether government agrees or not.

I hope his successor is equally as good or better, massive shoes to fill though.

Thank you Raheel Sharif i guess.

He is getting good press and i am sure he will leave big shoes to fill.

As expected, the man steps down after a respectable stint.

All those conspiracy theorists who were telling us that Raheel Sharif is making all sort of deals to take extension and even Imran Khan's protests (against corruption) were also to get Raheel extension and threat to democracy :)) LOSERS!

That was the narrative extended by mindless Nooras and Imran-haters. There was never an iota of truth in it.

This is unfortunately the fifth time that Badshah Salamat will be choosing the next chief, I hope he doesn't botch it up trying to appoint "his guy".

Never doubted him, Good luck to him for retired life. I hope we get to see upright person as him in our political system

None of the next in line (either of 4) have a personality like Raheel.

Was the most presentable COAS of all Armies worldwide.

You cant comment on anyone's personality until you have met them or atleast heard them speak.

Atleast one of the candidate, I can say would be a very good choice. He was the brains behind Gen. Raheel's all major anti terror ops. If he is selected by Nawaz, I can assure you we are in good hands.

Problem Nawaz has is that Raheel's possible replacements are even more hardline then the current army chief. Nawaz wants a pro India and pro government yes man that he will not be getting with or without Raheel at the helm. This is why he is delaying naming the chief. PM wants Raheel to stay but the current chief isn't interested.

Respect and unprecedented in Pakistani history. Best of wishes to him in real life, hopefully he will use his image to do something positive for Pakistan.

Lol the last time Nawaz looked for a pliable Chief , he ended up in a jail cell. What the budu doesnt understand is that the army isnt just the chief! And he should pray he doesnt mess this up otherwise a jail cell will be the least of his worries!

If tomorrow there are presidential style elections in Pakistan and General sahab is one of the candidates, he will garner more votes than Nawaz, Imran, Bilawal etc combined

General Raheel Sharif thwarted coup attempt in 2014

ISLAMABAD: Former United States Ambassador to Pakistan Richard Olson disclosed that former Chief of Army Staff General Raheel Sharif had thwarted a coup attempt in 2014.

“We received information that Zahirul Islam, the DG ISI, was mobilising for a coup in September of 2014. (Army Chief) Raheel (Sharif) blocked it by, in effect, removing Zahir, by announcing his successor…(Zahir) was talking to the corps commanders and was talking to likeminded army officers…He was prepared to do it and had the chief been willing, even tacitly, it would have happened. But the chief was not willing, so it didn’t happen,” Olson was quoted in the recently launched book “The Battle For Pakistan, The Bitter US Friendship and a Tough Neighborhood,” by Shuja Nawaz in its chapter titling, Mil-to-Mil Relations: Do More. Olson made this comment in the context of the protest sit-ins, or “dharna”, of Imran Khan in 2014.

Shuja Nawaz has authored a 373-page book covering the US-Pakistan relationship and important political events of the last decade and a half in Pakistan. Nawaz, brother of former Chief of Army Staff, the late Gen Asif Nawaz Janjua, is an acclaimed author and well-reputed intellectual. His book, “Crossed Swords: Pakistan, Its Army and the Wars Within,” is considered the most authoritative history of the Pakistan Army.

In his latest book, Nawaz reveals that for Americans, the former ISI Chief Lt Gen Ahmed Shuja Pasha was “straight shooting super nationalist general who had come into the world of intelligence on the insistence of Gen Kayani.”

According to the book, he (Pasha) became an activist and an aggressive head of the country’s largest intelligence agency, expanding its operations and remit virtually at will and demanding greater access to information on US operations and operatives inside Pakistan.

According to Nawaz, Pasha was a prime target of American surveillance. He was being tracked during his travels abroad. The book provides details on the surveillance of Lt Gen Pasha.

Shuja Nawaz also states that during his (Pasha’s) tenure, 3 Pakistan-US joint intelligence fusion cells were shut down. According to Nawaz, Pasha was a bête noire for Americans.

While quoting an unnamed US official as saying, the author touches on the subject of US intelligence surveillance inside Pakistan and said that the US had penetrated many Pakistani organisations.

The book says that, after Pasha’s retirement, the new ISI head Lt Gen Zahirul Islam was consumed by domestic issues. Islam spent most of his time on the political turmoil following the 2013 elections, which produced public sit-ins, or “dharnas”, by Imran Khan’s PTI and allies against the government.

“Both Pasha and Islam’s names were associated with the street opposition to Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif; though no solid evidence came to the surface. Islam was also a former head of one of the ISI’s wings or directorates, and then had been in the hurly-burly of Karachi politics as the corps commander there,” notes the book. Nawaz adds that Islam’s earlier experience at the ISI had been in monitoring Pakistani internal politics. Zahir’s activism was not “lost on US embassy.”

It is pertinent to mention here that Lt Gen Zahirul Islam and Lt Gen Ahmed Shuja Pasha have not given their views regarding their role in service. This reporter had the opportunity to talk to Lt Gen Pasha; however, Lt Gen Islam is yet to give his side of the story.

Shuja Nawaz adds US surveillance of the ISI and its head continued after Pasha. Islam’s successor at the ISI, Rizwan Akhtar, was a US-trained officer and maintained a good relationship with his US counterparts. However, he struggled to make an impression on his interlocutors, especially when it came to matters of detail discussions about the Afghan war. American criticism was harsh. One US official recalled that in a meeting on Afghan reconciliation, Akhtar did not even remember the names of leading Afghan Taliban field commanders. He was a hands-on DG ISI and reportedly showed up in Karachi frequently, where he had earlier served as DG Rangers. According to Nawaz, Akhtar took charge of the Karachi operation without even informing the ISI’s sector commander in that city. Due to his hands-on approach, Akhtar was unpopular in the ISI and even in the Army, according to Shuja Nawaz.

While giving details of Akhtar’s exit from the ISI and later from Army, Nawaz adds that “Akhtar failed to win the confidence of the new army chief Gen Bajwa and resigned by taking early retirement.” Akhtar was succeeded by another US-trained officer Lt Gen Naveed Mukhtar, a successful and active corps commander in Karachi. Mukhtar was a graduate of the Army War College Carlisle, PA.

The latest book by Shuja Nawaz is filled with firsthand accounts of Pakistani and US officials with direct purview of important political events in Pakistan and Afghanistan for a critical period of the region’s history.

Through the book, Nawaz once again shows his deep expertise on the Pakistan military and reflects his understanding of how the said institution plays a key role in South Asia.

The must-read book is also likely to provide much food for thought to those interested in Pakistan, US, Afghanistan, intelligence, defence cooperation, and related issues.

Nawaz Sharif's pet journalist once again for the millionth time trying to spread his propaganda. He is the same guy who recently published a piece in praise of one of the dumbest guy in Pakistan i.e. Maryam Safdar's husband Captain Safdar. The guy is so dumb that even PMLN supporters want him to stay away from party but this clown Azaz Syed wrote how Mansehra's women used to come on roofs to just to once look at the most handsome Captain Safdar. This is the level of this this journalist and him along with Umar Cheema have been at forefront of proving Nawaz as the biggest victim on this planet earth.

Lt Gen Ahmed Shuja Pasha was always a hardcore nationalist that kept the army and country together while Kayanni was dismantling everything and selling out

however the report is not true on the change of isi dg, this was a temporary appointment to get rizwan aktar to simply contain MQM, who was the foremost expert on breaking mqms back which he did brilliantly.
