"I don't think any other player will have had as many match fixers caught as I have" : Umar Akmal

ICC investigates Umar Akmal’s claim

Umar Akmal may find himself in hot water as he claimed that he was approached by bookmakers on several occasions for alleged corrupt activities.

Akmal, 28, said in a TV interview aired on Sunday evening that he was offered $200,000 by fixers to leave two deliveries in one of the matches. He also claimed that he was offered money to skip matches against India. “I was once offered $200,000 for leaving two deliveries. I was also offered to skip matches against India.” Akmal said in the interview.

He also said he was approached during ICC World Cup, including the 2015 edition played in Australia and New Zealand. His revelation has raised questions if the batsman had reported about this to anti-corruption officials.

According to ICC anti-corruption code 2.4.4 and 2.4.5, players are bound to report all the corrupt approaches made to them during any event and failure of doing so carry a minimum punishment of five years. The ICC has launched an investigation into the matter and has expressed desire to speak to Umar Akmal . “The ICC is aware of a recent interview given by Umar Akmal . Whilst we not that there is no suggestion that any fix actually took place, the ICC is reliant on players to report any corrupt approaches in timely manner,” said an ICC spokesman. “We are taking Akmal’s comments very seriously. We have launched an investigation and wish to speak to Mr Akmal as matter of urgency,” the spokesman added. Meanwhile, the Pakistan Cricket Board's (Anti-Corruption Unit) has served a notice to Akmal and summoned him to appear before it on June 27.

Said it before and will repeat, not in a mocking or derogatory way, the man is legitimately challenged.

Almost feel sorry for him tbh. I reckon his IQ is about 70. Just check his weird crap on twitter, idiotic statements and behaviour. Like Forrest Gump with a bad attitude.

I hate to say this Donal but mate that argument is an extremely convenient cop-out! This guy was shrewd enough to fake an injury to protect his brother's spot in the team and right now all he's trying to do is to drum up public sympathy so that he can force his way into the team without putting in the hard work.

I agree that Junior might not be the sharpest t00l in the shed, however, he isn't some dim witted individual and requires help. If this guy was serious enough, he would just put his head down and play club and FC cricket while putting up noticable performances but all he's doing is having a go after the sitting coach, complaining how he's been treated unfairly and now highlighting how he's been one of the most honest cricketers in the country.

He deserves every bit that is coming towards him right now!

To be noted. It's a different matter that he actually reported or not.

"I hate fixing deeply. Wherever I go, I am sincere with my country and sincere for my team. Until now, I don't think any other player will have had as many match fixers caught as I have for PCB. You go on tours so obviously you get phones and people get after you so I tell my management. The number of fixers is more than 10"

I am not performing due to being forced etc. Kami bhai said nothing will happen but I said I can't play so he called PCB and told them what happened. The chairman and chief selectors talked and said we have trust on you. Kami bhai gave me a very positive message and told me that if I quit, there will be a rumour that if you mentally torture Umar Akmal, he will go down. If you do well instead and perform, it will be a shut up call that if you try and force Umar, he is very sincere with his country. So I got up and prayed 2 nafls and made dua before the first match. Thanks to Allah I was best player of the tournament once again"

"Whenever I play a match against India, there is an offer. I was asked to make some excuse and to not play the match before the 2015 World Cup game. I told them I am very sincere with Pakistan and don't talk to me about this topic and asked them where they got the number from. The offers were all on the phone and PCB has all the records. If anyone even said it as a joke, I have reported it to PCB"

I am sorry but he shouldn't be allowed to play cricket at any level. He is an embarrassment to the sport and to his country as well. Why would match fixers approach this guy? It's not like he has any say in how well his team does. He can't bat to save his life. I do firmly believe that you shouldn't despise a person just because they are bad at playing cricket, but he does things off the field that make you despise him as well.

Well if what I am hearing is true, then Umar did not report these approaches.

I once interviewed Umar Akmal and he said to me that he had been approached by bookies at the Hong Kong Sixes - I asked him if he had reported the approach, to which he said he didn't know he had to report it :)

What did you do after that? I mean did you talk to PCB or did PCB approach you for any clarity?

He is a professional player, doesn’t he have a a single decent advisor? Going to TV 3 years after the incidents and talk about these things, this is crazy stuff.

Yet another desperate cry for attention. I think he needs help. Do the PCB not offer players some form of educational program to prepare them for life as a "professional" athlete?

I don't know how he pulls it all, he seems to get better(worse actually) with his antics when it comes to cracking others up. This one is truly hilarious on so many fronts.:))):)))

He does have potential to be a great batsman, but he is very immiture an attention seeking

Wonder what someone like Akmal would be doing in life if he wasn’t any good at cricket because he comes across as thick as mince?

I'm finding it extremely difficult to comment on this thread. Mental health issues are extremely serious and this guy needs help. Urgently

Why do we produce so many stupid cricketers? UA reminds me of a 14 year boys who would do anything for attention.

What he said " Whenever I play against India I get approached."
What he meant " Whenever I play against India I get approached to perform something , but I always refuse the approach and my performance is proof enough" :))

:))) this guys is blockbuster entertainment. Not once he has performed against India.

Lahore June 25: Cricketer Umar Akmal appeared before the PCB Anti Corruption Unit (ACU) today.

Umar had been asked to appear before the PCB ACU on June 27 but at Umar' s request and owing to his availability issues the interview was conducted today.

The matter is now under consideration and PCB shall announce further details shortly

This is kind confusing. He says he has reported to pcb and those fixers have been caught. And then pcb and acu send him notice??????

He is by far one of the least intelligent cricketers I have seen in 15 years of following the sport.

Whats the chances that he will say he was misquoted or quoted out of context?

There are some players that just lack cricketing intelligence but in his case the problem is his innate intelligence.

Tbf, there are a lot of sportsmen who are a bit thick in general, but have a lot of intelligence when it comes to the particular sport. When you love and play the sport every single day of your life, you develop intelligence in your field of expertise.

UA on the other hand has neither. He is so thick, that even after playing the sport day in day out for more than 15 years, he hasn’t developed cricketing intelligence.

I blame his manager, Whoever that is. Normally they advise on players what to say and what not too. Most of the Pakistani players managers and agents don't know how to look after their players. Absolute joke.

I find the part where he says he's 'caught' match fixers. Was he the whistleblower in 2010? He was one of the players around at the time. Always thought it had to be one of the players who leaked info at that point.

I feel bad for Umar. I don't think he can handle fame properly nor can he handle media criticism and expectations on him.

His best course of action I feel would be to completely shut out to the media, don't read newspaper or watch tv articles about cricket/him, delete twitter. And focus on getting fit.

Lol. His brother was named in the NOTW article, and this is the same guy who faked an injury for his brother.

There were pictures of him with Majeed as well

I guess this begs the question why is he allegedly approached so much by bookies?

The PCB gets access to all of our interviews - it was over to them to deal with it.

It could be a case of an established business relationship which goes all the way back to 2010

Hopefully icc anti corruption unit contact him to put some sense in his mind as i don.t think he have any proof to back this and cheap attempt trying to proof himself hero which won.t work for him.

Pcb should also issue showcase notice if they are not aware of it .

Spot on

ICC questions Umar Akmal over fixing claims

The International Cricket Council questioned Pakistani cricketer Umar Akmal regarding his claims of being approached to fix matches.

The interview was conducted via Skype. The body's anti-corruption unit asked how the fixing offers were made.

The ICC body asked Akmal why he did not inform them about the fixing offers being made to him.

The ICC has also asked for the unedited clip of Akmal's interview to SAMAA TV.

Akmal, during an interview to SAMAA TV in June, said he had been offered money to fix matches whenever Pakistan has played against India.

"They offered me $0.2 million to leave two balls in the cricket World Cup," he said earlier. "An offer was also made in the 2015 edition of the tournament as well."

The batsman went on to say that he has been made offers to fix matches whenever he steps on to the field against India.

"They come up to me and tell me that they will pay me if I miss or opt out of a game," he said.

"I told them that I am very dedicated to Pakistan and that they should not talk about such things with me," Akmal said.

He claimed that he had repeatedly informed the Pakistan Cricket Board about the offers being made to him.

ICC initiates probe against Umar Akmal

DUBAI: The head of Inter*national Cricket Council’s (ICC) anti-corruption unit Alex Marshall on Tuesday said the unit has initiated investigations against Pakistan batsman Umar Akmal.

During an interview earlier, this year, the batsman had said that he was offered $200,000 by fixers to leave two deliveries in one of the matches. “I was once offered $200,000 for leaving two deliveries. I was also offered to skip matches against India,” he said in the interview.

The batsman further infor*med that he was approached during ICC World Cup, including the 2015 edition played in Australia and New Zealand.

However, Akmal did not mention if he had reported the incident to the anti-corruption unit or not.

According to ICC anti-corruption code 2.4.4 and 2.4.5, players are bound to report all the corrupt approaches made to them during an event and failure of doing so carry a minimum punishment of five years.

Earlier in July, the ICC had interviewed Akmal’s regarding the allegations.

The out-of-favour batsman was sent back from last year’s Champions Trophy after being declared unfit and was also dropped from the Lahore Qalandars side after failing to perform with the bat.

Looks Like Umar Akmal is going to get Banned because he entrapped & implicated himself. No, wonder people had doubts about his intelligence level.

Umar admits to being aproached by bookies but didn’t report it, and not surprisingly, people have jumped on him like animals once again. However, if it was Wasim Akram...

Umar is still active so ICC/PCB can do something. Wasim is not so what can they do?

Pakistan Cricket Board's (PCB) anti-corruption unit (ACU) has approached cricketer Umar Akmal to record his statement regarding a recent Al Jazeera documentary on corruption in cricket, in which he was shown to meet an alleged match-fixer's associate.

In the documentary released on Sunday, Akmal — who is currently out of the national team — was photographed "receiving and peering into a bag allegedly given to him" by the associate of a man named Aneel Munawar, though the photographs did not show whether Akmal had left with the bag.

PCB's Chief Operating Officer Subhan Ahmed today revealed that Akmal has been contacted on the matter, and that he has agreed to appear before the ACU once he is free from his domestic cricketing commitments.

Subhan said that the PCB has a "zero tolerance policy" on corruption and match-fixing issues, adding that "we have assured the ICC that our anti-corruption unit will thoroughly investigate the allegations leveled at our national cricketer."

Umar Akmal foolishly entrapped himself. Now every sensational movie and fictional story will mention him as the corrupted player. Since the Akmals are already out of favor with the Coaches, it can destroy his career. And he has none other than himself to blame.

The Pakistan Cricket Board’s (PCB) Chief Operating Officer, Subhan Ahmed on Wednesday said that they have asked the T10 League management for an explanation over criticism made on them for being corrupt.

Ahmed while talking to the media in Lahore said that there are lots of queries over the T10 League hence they want to investigate the tournament which is ten-over-a-side.

Ahmed revealed that the PCB called Test cricketer Umar Akmal to ask him about the fixing-allegations made on him by Arab TV in a documentary.

“We have called Umar Akmal for questioning him about his appearance in a documentary released by Arab TV regarding spot-fixing scandals,” he said.

“The PCB has ‘zero-tolerance’ policy over spot-fixing issues,” he added.

He was quick to add that a single picture can not decide whether Umar was involved in it or not so they have decided to listen to his verdict over the issue.

“It is just a picture but still we want to investigate this issue in deep,” he stated.

It is pertinent to mention here that Umar Akmal is busy playing cricket abroad and will report to the PCB on his return.

On the other hand, Ahmed said that they have formed a task force to work for the betterment of domestic cricket in the country.

“We are keenly looking forward to making our domestic cricket circuit more strong,” he said.

He said that some decisions taken in the first meeting of the task force were criticised but they will try to take fruitful steps in the coming meeting of the committee.

“The things will take some time to get settled down, hopefully, the coming meetings of the task force will stand on some good decisions,” he said.

probably didn’t do thing wrong but sometimes flying with the wrong flock of birds can get u shot down.. tbh he’s a nobody in my books

Maybe, we should have stats for this as well next to each cricketer name

Well done Umar Akmal.

Let’s hope that he is finally growing up, and that Pakistan’s second best batsman will finally be selected again in Tests, where he is so desperately needed.

I think umars career internationally is done He may get a recall here and there but alas we will always talk about what ifs with him

If only umar had some intelligence focus and discipline in his life

Some of the things he comes out with in the media and the lack of hard work on and off the pitch just shows you can have all the talent in the world but without some brains and respect and dedication to the game you will never make it

The problem with him was he never believed in his own talent. He never thought if he worked harder he could be one of the best in the world. The reason why he kept looking for other excuses like he was not played in right position etc.

Could this have some connection with the indian bookie who was arrested the other day?

Hopefully he reported these offers, otherwise this interview is pretty much a confession. IIRC both Irfan and Nawaz got banned solely because they didn't report approaches.

True, this can backfire on him. If he din't report in time, instead of being a hero he may end up being banned.

Lol, should’ve reported to ACSU then

ROFL.

He's at it again, trying to get some publicity. I doubt this really happened. Even if it did, 200k is a huge unrealistic amount.

Looks like he wants to get banned. Only good for us.

I would take 3 years.

Why not report it in 2015 then ?

Haha he tried to look good and patriotic but instead he could get banned now.

Waah re Akmal! :afridi

I hope Umar was dumb enough not to report this, that way he will be banned! Eid come early!

He is a fool, and if he didn’t report it he will now become a banned fool, unless he somehow gets treated like Brendan McCullum.

But the weird thing is, I totally believe him.

There are absurd sums of money placed on illegal bets in the subcontinent. This means the profits are vast and the bookies resort to gangster like activities due to the profits on offer.

Just ask yourself, if you were an Aussie or Kiwi or South African fringe international player in your thirties, would you take US$200,000 for something like this?

I would. (If anyone wants to pay me $200,000 to let them dictate two sentences of a PakPassion post, I’m available.)

The question is, how many international cricketers have pocketed the money and fixed?

What started as him boasting about his honesty has ended up as screwing his life.
