Nathan Ellis (TAS/Lindisfarne Cricket Club)

Steve Smith (NSW/Sutherland Cricket Club)
Mitchell Starc (NSW/Manly Warringah Cricket Club)

Adam Zampa (NSW/Sutherland Cricket Club)

Chair of Selectors George Bailey said:

“This is a balanced and experienced squad with the core having been involved in the previous one-day World Cup, the West Indies series, last year’s successful tour of the UK and the more recent Pakistan home series.

“It offers a variety of options for touring management depending on opposition and the conditions that may present in Pakistan.”

The squad will assemble, prepare and play an ODI in Sri Lanka following the upcoming Test series before heading to Pakistan for the group stage of the Champion’s Trophy.

NB: The squad is preliminary under ICC regulations and may be changed pending squad requirements/injuries until the commencement of the tournament.

Maxwell is never going to dropped and that's too in subcontinent.

He is getting back to the form . recently scored 90 odd runs in BBL game .

If Cummins is not gonna play than Nathan Ellis will replace him not a batsman .

Head
Short
Marsh
Smith
Maxi
Carey
Hardie/ Stonish
Nathan Ellis/ Cummins
Hazelwood
Starc

BBL form cannot predict ODI form. Maxwell is pretty much finished .

My team has Cummins

Solid experienced squad from the Aussies looking to cover most bases.

Short of quality spin options Head, maxi and short will likely bowl and that will be a weak link to attack.

An ageing side and I don't see them going far this tournament. Starc, Cummins and Hazelwood should not play white ball cricket together anymore. They should have rope in some new bloods.

If they have sam konstas , a ftb with out much technique, as test opener i don't think they have much talent left.i guess it's one last attempt for ageing team.smith, marnus are almost washed up. Marsh is another great ftb with out even foot movement.

Maxwell is always perform in Big matches Plus he is way better spin bowler now .

He can can give Australia 6-7 over easily .

Your team has only two quality pacer - Cummins and Hazelwood.

No balance at all .

Australia often play that extra batting balance

They played that balance in England a few months ago
That series where Cummins was not available and Starc, Hazlewood didn't play all matches .

In 3rd and 4th odi They played Starc , Hazlewood and sean abbot trio together.

Australia is always play three quality pacers

Sean Abbott averages 40 with the ball. Quality pacer ?

He is not but australia didn't have much options at that time.

Most of players were injured.

Tell me when was the last time australia just played with only 2 frontline pacer in any ICC tournaments ?

Sean Abbott has been quite poor for the past two years or so, despite consistent opportunities in ODIs. It's very hard to justify a place for him in the CT squad.

Yes that's why he is not in the champion trophy squad . Jye Richardson , Spencer johnson and lance Morris are better option than Sean Abbott .

Jhye Richardson breaks down way too much to be a regular bowler for them. In fact , he has broken down twice this season and is going for yet another shoulder surgery.

Spencer Johnson is not a good bowler except in T20's.

Lance Morris could've been tried, I agree.

Jhye Richardson? I feel like Australia moved on from him years ago. Once upon a time, he was regarded as a future prospect in all formats. But since then he has failed to live up to expectations and struggled with injuries.

Lance Morris could have been a good pick because he brings something different to the attack with his raw pace. Even Xavier Bartlett and Spencer Johnson are more deserving than Abbott, though personally they don't impress me much.

Eventhough he is mid, in hindsight, Nathan Ellis is probably the best pick because of his international experience and ability to bowl well at the death.

Glenn Maxwell in last four innings in Big bash- 20*(10), 58*(32), 90(52) & 76*(32)

He is back in the form @Nikhil_cric

Doesn't matter what he does in a T20 league of questionable quality in Australian conditions.

He has done nothing to suggest he can do anything in Asian conditions in ODI cricket.

His innings against Afghanistan was the reason why australia won the world cup 2023 otherwise australia would have been not qualified for the semi-final.

Don't forget he had taken most important wicket of Rohit Sharma in 2023 world cup final

Maxwell is very important player for them .

Injury sees key Australia all-rounder ruled out of Champions Trophy

The experienced all-rounder will be sidelined for the Champions Trophy and Australia will be forced to name a replacement player.

Australia have suffered a massive blow with news that all-rounder Mitch Marsh will miss the upcoming ICC Champions Trophy due to injury.

Marsh has been suffering a back problem and will be sidelined for Australia's Champions Trophy campaign that begins on February 16.

"Mitchell Marsh has been ruled out of the upcoming ICC Men's Champion's Trophy with ongoing lower back pain and dysfunction," Cricket Australia said via a statement.

"The National Selection Panel and Australian men's medical team ruled Marsh out of the tournament with the injury which has not responded sufficiently to rehabilitation.

"His lower back pain flared in recent weeks leading the NSP to make the longer term decision for Marsh to complete a more extended period of rehabilitation.

"Marsh will now undergo a period of further rest and rehabilitation as part of his return to play plan."

Australia selectors have until February 12 to finalise their squad and will be able to name a replacement player prior to this deadline.

"The NSP will meet to decide on a replacement for Marsh in due course," the statement continued.

"The deadline for the final squads for the ICC Men's Champion's Trophy is prior to Wednesday 12 February."

And with that end aus chances of CT. I will see you all at wtc and Ashes folkes.

You gave up so easily bro... Trust the other players,,, no???
If you were in aus you'd realise that even Australian fans ans their own cricketers are not interested in CT.

They just care about wtc and upcoming Ashes.

If they cared rather then scheduling a 2 match test series(no point since they've already qualified), and a 2 match odi series, they'd have scheduled a 5 match odi series with a team that was playing CT.

Ik they scheduled a 2 match test with sri lanka even before BGT because they wanted to qualify, but that shows where their priorities lie.

Australia's biggest issue is odi. Their test stocks are strong and Beau replacing Marsh in test was the biggest blessing in disgusie of all time. And they have no issues in t20 either.

They have plenty of hacks that can hack and slash and reach 200 to 220 scores in t20.

But in odi their stocks are deplinishing, cause the country and players are loosing interest in that format.

It's very unfortunate that WC still exists which is why they'll have to pull their socks up for 2027 but otherwise they don't care.

India, Pakistan, SA, and Afg care the most because either of lack of icc trophies or because cricket is their main sport and pride.

England, Australia and New Zealand are either looking forward to test or the new IPL season because NZ is the lowest paid board and their cricketers only want money.

Praying for a first round exit for Oz.

I think their success will depend heavily on how well Travis Head does at the top. The rest of the batting is pretty mid.

Marsh out, Cummins out, Hazlewood may be out too.

Australia have no chance of winning this.

Australia has a habit of winning trophies. We can never rule this team out

Australia faces massive double injury blow for Champions Trophy

The Aussies may have to find three new players to include in their 15-member squad for the upcoming tournament in Pakistan and UAE.

Australia's ICC Champions Trophy plans have been thrown into further disarray with news that skipper Pat Cummins and key seamer Josh Hazlewood are unlikely to travel to feature at the tournament.

The Aussies have already been dealt a blow with the loss of experienced all-rounder Mitch Marsh due to injury and the absence of Cummins and Hazlewood could further dent the side as they seek a third Champions Trophy title in the 50-over tournament that commences in Pakistan and Dubai on February 19.

Andrew McDonald discussed the latest injury blow on Wednesday and the Australian coach revealed he may need a new skipper for the tournament given the likely absence of current ODI captain Cummins.

"Pat Cummins hasn't been able to resume any type of bowling so he's heavily unlikely, so that would mean that we do need a captain," McDonald told Australian radio station SEN.

"Steve Smith and Travis Head are the two that we've been having conversations with while we've been building out that Champions Trophy team along with Pat back home. They'll be the two that we look at for that leadership post.

"They're the two obvious ones. Steve has done a great job here in the (first) Test match (against Sri Lanka). He's done some good work in one-day international cricket across the journey as well. So it's between those two.

"But, as I said, Patty is hugely unlikely, which is a bit of shame, and we've also got Josh Hazlewood, who is battling (to be fit) at the moment. So that medical information will land over the next couple of days and we'll be able to shore that up and let everyone know the direction."

Teams have until February 12 to submit their final squads of 15 to the ICC for the tournament and if Cummins and Hazlewood join Marsh on the sidelines then Australia will be on the lookout for three new players.

Australia great Ricky Ponting recently threw up uncapped all-rounder Mitch Owen for Marsh's vacant role when speaking on The ICC Review, while Sean Abbott and Spencer Johnson are other pace options which may be considered.

The Aussies are drawn in Group B at the Champions Trophy alongside Afghanistan, England and South Africa, ahead of a potential berth in the knockout stages of the eight-team tournament.

Australia will play two ODIs against Sri Lanka in Colombo prior to the Champions Trophy, with the majority of the squad expected to fly out to the island nation later this week.

ICC

I don't think you can go wrong with Steve Smith as captain. Had that Sandpapergate incident not happened maybe he would still be captain today. In general, I think he is a very good captain with good instincts. Travis Head is a good future option for them. He has captained South Australia and Adelaide Strikers. But if I had to pick, I'd have to go with Smith as captain for the CT.

It was bound to happen as they always played with Cummins, Hazlewood and Starc
Don't see too many viable back-ups. Sean Abbott has been quote poor with the ball as of late. But still has some level of experience. I think it will probably be him and Spencer Johnson coming in.

Nesser , Lance Morris and Richardson are other options

Nesser , Lance Morris and Richardson are other options
Jhye Richardson: too injury-prone
Lance Morris: All pace, not enough control

Michael Neser might not be a bad option. He can bowl decent seam and bat a bit. Not sure what his recent numbers are. I think they should pick two of Neser, Spencer Johnson and Sean Abbott

Marcus Stoinis has announced immediate retirement from ODI cricket meaning Australia has another player missing for the upcoming ICC Champions Trophy.

That was a shock TBH

Great? It's a blessing in disguise 🤣🤣. This is the only news I'm happy about. He was an odi leach.

Cummins and hazlewood missing + Warner retirement is an issue. Stoinis? No one cares.

Not that he was any good in ODIs, but this is a pretty selfish decision considering he has already been selected for an ICC tournament, and the team is already dealing with injuries to major players.

Australia is done and dusted with a second string pace attack.

India, England and South Africa are now the top contenders, with New Zealand as the dark horse as usual.

With Pat Cummins ruled out, who should captain Australia at the ICC Champions Trophy 2025?

Since 2006, in all ODIs where bowlers bowled their full quota of 10 overs, only once there's been the instance where the bowler didn't concede a single boundary.

Pat Cummins in the WC 2023 final. @mominsaigol. Aussies squad look pedestrian now. Cummins, Hazlewood and Stoinis out already

That's fine, I'll win wtc and ashes.

I have taken solace in the fact that both Oceania's (NZ and Aus) are responsible for booting India out of wtc.

Australia:

Steve Smith (NSW/Sutherland Cricket Club) (c)
Sean Abbott (NSW/Parramatta District Cricket Club)
Alex Carey (SA/Glenelg Cricket Club)
Ben Dwarshuis (NSW/Sutherland Cricket Club)
Nathan Ellis (TAS/Lindisfarne Cricket Club)
Jake Fraser-McGurk (SA/ West Torrens Cricket Club)
Aaron Hardie (WA/Willetton Cricket Club)

Tanveer Sangha (NSW/Campbelltown Camden Cricket Club)
Matthew Short (VIC/Northcote Cricket Club)
Adam Zampa (NSW/Sutherland Cricket Club)
Travelling reserve: Cooper Connolly (WA/Scarborough Cricket Club)

Chair of men’s selectors George Bailey said: “The squad has changed significantly over the past month on the back of some untimely injuries and the retirement of Marcus Stoinis.

“The upside of that is that we have been able to call on players who have had international exposure and success over the past 12 months.

“A strong core of some our most experienced players will provide a strong foundation in our attempt to win this edition of the Champions Trophy.

“We have a range of options to shape the playing XI within the tournament depending on the opposition and conditions we face.”

Mitchell Starc has withdrawn from the tournament for personal reasons, with the support of Cricket Australia and the Australian men’s team.

Starc will also not be available for the two-game ODI Series in Sri Lanka which leads into the Champions Trophy.

Cricket Australia respects and supports Starc’s decision, the reasons for which remain private.

“We understand and respect Mitch’s decision,” Bailey said.

“Mitch is deeply respected for his commitment to international cricket and the priority he places on performing for Australia.

“His well documented ability to play through pain and adversity, as well as forgoing opportunities in other parts of his career to put his country first should be applauded.

“His loss is of course a blow for the Champions Trophy campaign but does provide an opportunity to someone else to make a mark on the tournament.”

Starc has requested the media to respect his privacy regarding this decision and will not be making any comment.

Joke squad, if they win CT, Then every country should just quit playing cricket.

Australia didn't win a single match in the 2013 Champions Trophy.

Australia didn't win a single match in the 2017 Champions Trophy .

Can they win a first match after more than 15 years in a champion trophy?

:kp

Australia's CT squad looks like an absolute joke.
Yup but still you can't rule out australia in any ICC tournaments .

I know injury are part of the game but Stoinis retirement and Starc opt out from the tournament is not understable .

Starc said it was personal reasons, so we don't know. Maybe its something serious otherwise he wouldn't have waited until te last moment to pull out. Stoinis's decision I thought was pretty selfish considering he had already been named in the squad. Not like he was going for a 6 match test series that would be hard on his body. Despite him being a mediocre ODI player, Australia could have used his experience.

You can never count them out but suddenly they have gone from one of the favorites to a position where they could realistically lose all three matches.

The fast bowling attack in particular is wafer-thin. Not a single bowler of note.

A part of me still wants to root for Australia.
Imagine if they win with such a squad. 🤣🤣.

If there's any team that can do it even now it's probably Australia.

They just understand ODI cricket better than other teams and know exactly what's required.
I would be surprised if they get through this group with this popgun bowling attack.

Might fluke a game due to the batting being relatively strong, but they are at risk of getting comprehensively beat by Afghanistan too with this squad.

Yeah they're not favourites to make semis at this rate.

But I'll still expect them to compete despite losing a top order batter + 3 frontline bowlers.

Had any other team lost so many players, they would have been brutally thrashed.

It shows CT is not a highly rated tournament by A list teams only in Pakistan we will rest players from test cricket to have them fit for this event

Highly unusual the ever reliable Cummins and Starc for undisclosed reasons not playing in the first international tournament to be held in Pakistan for decades

Australia head to the ICC Champions Trophy 2025 with four consecutive ODI losses

Usually rate Australia's chances but bah Gawd, they'll be lucky to escape a shellacking this time .

Adam Gilchrist, during a show on local media, said:

“It’s a challenging one at the moment, but Smith should open. I didn’t see where he was slotted in the game against Sri Lanka. Obviously, Travis is going to be there — he’s fresh and fit. I also like Matt Short being there — he can form a nice left-hand-right-hand combination — that would be the preferred way for me to go.”

"But I do think Smith can open — we have seen him do that in 20-over cricket really well."
