This will be the game India win the tournament. Not necessarily a shock but the first and only one of the competition

Irony for Pakistan fans. Nz humiliated Pakistan at home In front of entire world still Pakistan fans supporting them. :ssmith

I think some Pakistanis who've been obsessed with India exiting have no option but to swallow their pride and support NZ quietly. If NZ win, they'll drown the feeling of shame with loud exclamations of victory while bidding India a safe return home.

If Afg win..... oh boy :))) What's the word for "pain + the shame from hypocrisy".

Looool it may be raw NZ and England shafted them but why would they want arch-rival to success???

Not quietly. Pakistanis are openly supporting New Zealand against India. We dont want India in the semis, and certainly dont want them in the final.

If Afghanistan win the conspiracy theories will be much much higher than they were after the Afghan/India match.

This clinical Kiwi side should not lose to a team like Afghanistan. I’m afraid it’s probably all over for India

As things stand, India’s ICC Men’s T20 World Cup hopes are still alive. If things don’t go their way in New Zealand’s match against Afghanistan though, everything changes. Here, we look at the consequences of each potential result.

As England and Australia secure their ICC Men's T20 World Cup semi-final spots through Group 1, attention turns to a precarious Group 2, where three teams remain in the hunt to join Pakistan in the final four.

Having gone undefeated in their first four matches of the campaign, Babar Azam's men, guaranteed a knockout spot, have avoided the jostle late in the group stage.

In the fight for the other semi-final spot, India, Afghanistan and New Zealand are jockeying for position, and with the bearing of three team's campaigns resting on New Zealand's match with Afghanistan today, the world's attention will be on Abu Dhabi.

Given the significance of the match and the three teams' hopes, we've broken down the consequences of all three possible results.

If New Zealand win

A New Zealand victory presents the most straightforward of scenarios.

The Black Caps can lock down their spot in the semi-finals by beating Afghanistan as it would take them to eight points, out of reach of India and leaving Mohammad Nabi’s team on four.

If New Zealand win and Pakistan suffer a surprise loss to Scotland, the Black Caps could finish the group on top spot courtesy of a superior net run-rate.

The situation for New Zealand: Locked in for the semi-finals with a chance at top in the group

The situation for Afghanistan: Eliminated

The situation for India: Eliminated

If Afghanistan win

An Afghanistan win opens up all sorts of permutations.

It would take the team to six points, drawing them level on points with New Zealand and likely second courtesy of superior net run-rate.

That being said, a victory over New Zealand would not be enough to lock down Afghanistan’s spot in the semi-finals.

For Afghanistan, net run-rate will be key and they’ll have an eye on India’s game against Namibia on Monday. India will go into that match knowing exactly what they need to do to leapfrog both New Zealand and Afghanistan on NRR.

The situation for New Zealand: Eliminated

The situation for Afghanistan: Through to the semi-finals if India lose or if finish with an inferior net run-rate

The situation for India: Through to semi-finals if they beat Namibia and secure a superior NRR than both Afghanistan and New Zealand.

If the match ends in a tie or non-result

The chances of a tie or a non-result are minimal given the climate of Abu Dhabi and unlimited Super Overs barring exceptional circumstances.

Nevertheless, if New Zealand and Afghanistan were to split the points, New Zealand would move to seven points making it impossible for India to chase them down.

The situation for New Zealand: Through to the semi-finals

The situation for Afghanistan: Eliminated

The situation for India: Eliminated

If Afghanistan win the conspiracy theories will be much much higher than they were after the Afghan/India match.

So, should Afg lose just to make Pakistanis happy :rp

Whoever is better on the day, and is able to better exploit the conditions will win. If you're Pakistani, there is no reason to believe that NZ will lose, except for paranoia :qdkcheeky

Personally, I think NZ should win. But I feel Afg might just pull this off.

Afghanistan need to bat first. Don't go berserk in the power play 40-1 would be a good start. Aim for something in the ball park off 150-160.
Open their bowling with Nabi and Hamid Hassan. Bring Rashid khan and Mujeeb after the power play and bowl them continuously for 8 overs to squeeze the life out of the Kiwi Batting line.

If its spinning track Afg 60 NZ 40. Otherwise, NZ 70-Afg 30.

I believe Afghanistan team should be smart enough to know that they have zero chance of going to SF. Even if they win, India will thump Namibia to get a better run rate then them. So winning does nothing for them in this WC except a moral victory.

Why wont Afghanistan want to win this game? If not then India will complain exactly as we are now!

The pashtun warriors will seize the day from the hobbits, inshallah :sk

So you want to lose them to appease Pakistan Fan's? Victory over any team always priority regardless of qualification.

Mujeeb is playing today game or not ? Any news about him.

He didn't play in the most important match for Afghanistan (vs india) but he will play in the most important for India (today).

Afghanistanis surely don't know where are their priorities.

I'm looking to see the intent from Afghanistan.
That should say it all

He also not played before india match due to injury but your knowledge is not so good seem like. :ssmith

News from Abu Dhabi: Mujeeb is looking fit and doing pre-match drills and he will most probably be playing the big game today vs New Zealand.

Expecting Afghanistan to beat a team which we are struggling to beat in any ICC World Tournament is a bit too much. Never thought I would see this day where we have to rely on a minnow team to help us progress into the next round of a World Cup. It is New Zealand's game to lose today. Even if Afghan wins they most likely won't qualify. :inti

NZ should have way too much for Afghans. Afghan will go out all guns blazing but will fall short; that method wins you games against minnows but not at the top (unless ur playing Pak, who crumble against pressure)…

having struggled to overcome new zealand at mega events, india have now changed tactics and entrusted the task with another outfit. :ashwin

That was an easy win for Afghanistan.
He played and bowled all his 4 overs with injury against Pakistan.

Imagine it’s a last ball thriller and NZ lose

Perfect result for India

Used wicket for New Zealand vs Afghanistan - spinners will play a big role.

Nz already troll Pakistan like there is no tommorow in front of whole world but hut :ssmith
Very sad if you believe their intention was to ‘troll’ us. Won’t compare to the amount of ridicule Indians will face from Pakistan though :yk

Pitch report from cricbuzz: The wicket is going to be slow, it's the same pitch that was used yesterday for Australia vs West Indies. It has a few cracks, so batting might be challenging. The third match to be played on this track

Afghanistan win the toss and will bat first.

Once again, Afghanistan win the toss and elect to lose

Used pitch, hopefully the pitch doesn't deteriorate much.

Mujeeb is back. Sharafuddin is the bowler who makes way. Kane Williamson says he would have chosen to bat first as well on a used surface. New Zealand playing an unchanged XI.

Afghanistan XI: 1 Hazratullah Zazai, 2 Mohammad Shahzad (wk), 3 Rahmanullah Gurbaz, 4 Najibullah Zadran, 5 Mohammad Nabi (capt), 6 Gulbadin Naib, 7 Karim Janat, 8 Rashid Khan, 9 Naveen-ul-Haq, 10 Hamid Hassan, 11 Mujeeb-ur-Rahman.

New Zealand XI: 1 Martin Guptill, 2 Daryl Mitchell, 3 Kane Williamson (capt), 4 Devon Conway (wk), 5 Glenn Phillips, 6 James Neesham, 7 Mitchell Santner, 8 Adam Milne, 9 Tim Southee, 10 Ish Sodhi, 11 Trent Boult.

Need minimum 160 runs Target for NZ otherwise it's one side affairs in favour of NZ.

If Afghans post 140 they'll be confident or defending that

Mujeeb is a wonderful bowler and let's see if Rashid will go from bowling leg sided rubbish (against India) to pitching it on middle and off and spinning it both ways (against Pakistan)

NZ need to keep Afg below 140. So the can play out Afg spinners without needing to go after them.

Does Afghanistan have any chance to qualify themselves at all? Mathematically speaking.

Some dead rubbers to come after this game
Also this is pyjama format so SF should have been pinned via lottery 4 teams in a pot and who gets who

Short ball important against Afghanistan batters.

Boult with a couple of good ones.

First Return Ticket bought for team India...

Rohit Sharma is now boarded on the plane 😆

This is epitome of hypocrisy.
Indians are supporting Afg now, after bashing them non stop on their media regarding Taliban takeover. Now they are dependent on Afg to progress Semis. And still they have the gal to call upon Pakistani supporter to whoever they want to support.
:facepalm

Zazai has been put into razai

Second Return ticket bought for team india...

KL Rahul has been boarded as well... 🙃

NZ pacers taking the pitch out of the equation with some excellent bowling so far.

Watch for some resistance from Nabi etc They did that to Pakistan also

Afg are not that good against short bowling NZ and Abu Dhabi has enough bounce and NZ had pace to exploit it.

Watch for some resistance from Nabi etc They did that to Pakistan also

NZ will be more ruthless, also, afg will rue their shenanigans against india (which ever perspective one wants to go with, fixed or tactical brain freeze)

and already being 2 down, nz will only tighten the nooze from here...

Afghan wins the toss, batting first on a used pitch.

BCCI has put everything on a platter for them, now they need to deliver for Team India :najam

lolz cricinfo commentery is gold right now, only indian fans b and moaning about afg's play and tactics, haha

Afghans may not get to 100

I'm sure lots of TV sets being smashed as I type

Third Return Ticket bought for team India...

Virat Kohli is now boarded on the plane 😆
