ICC T20 World Cup 2022: Round 1 Matches discussion

West Indies opt to bowl

Teams:

Scotland (Playing XI): George Munsey, Michael Jones, Matthew Cross(w), Richie Berrington(c), Calum MacLeod, Chris Greaves, Michael Leask, Mark Watt, Josh Davey, Safyaan Sharif, Brad Wheal

West Indies (Playing XI): Kyle Mayers, Evin Lewis, Brandon King, Shamarh Brooks, Nicholas Pooran(w/c), Rovman Powell, Jason Holder, Odean Smith, Akeal Hosein, Alzarri Joseph, Obed McCoy

Richie Berrington: I would be tempted to have a bowl first with some of the moisture around. It's gonna be fast-scoring and hopefully we can get off to a good start. Lot of learnings from last tournament, our 50-over cricket has gone well this year and I think we can take a lot of confidence from that. Chris Sole, Craig Wallace, Hamza Tahir and Brandon McMullen have been left out.

Nicholas Pooran: We are gonna have a bowl. New pitch and just to have a look at the conditions. We are motivated, not taking it for granted. Fletcher, Reifer, Cariah and Charles are out today.

West Indies have won the toss and have opted to field

Great start by Scotland, another example of how good these teams outside of top 9 are.

George munsey slowed down a lot. He has played a match losing innings here.
Only 66 off 53.
They could only score 160. Pitch looks really good.

What a start to the tournament. These round 1 games have been entertaining to watch. Come on scotland

West Indies mercenaries are awful. They can't hit sixes on these big grounds.
Another one bites the dust..

For WI fans sake, they should reach 100. Losing this badly to an associate is unacceptable.

jee whiz windies....this is the cup of upsets...
i guess the assosiates are hungrier to make an impact

If they manage to beat a couple of big teams, then it will force ICC to rethink their strategy of excluding associates from ICC events.

What a mess

Scotland has made it a second consecutive day of upsets at the ICC Men's T20 World Cup by recording a stunning 42-run victory over the West Indies in Hobart on Monday.

Brave Scots have heroes everywhere

Opener George Munsey set the tone by carrying his bat throughout at Bellerive Oval to finish with a stylish 66 from just 53 deliveries as Scotland amassed 160/5 from their 20 overs.

Calum MacLeod (23), Michael Jones (20) and skipper Richie Berrington (16) all played valuable hands, but it was with the ball and in the field that the Scots really shone.

The West Indies couldn't get a hold of Mark Watt, with the left-arm spinner collecting superb figures of 3/12 from his four overs, while fellow spinner Michael Leask (2/15) was just as impressive.

And the duo were well supported by their team-mates in the field, with Scotland holding on to some excellent outfield catches and showing the rest of the world they will be difficult to beat at the tournament.

Disappointing day for Caribbean cricket

Much was made of the new West Indies' era with veterans Dwayne Bravo and Chris Gayle gone and the likes of Andre Russell and Sunil Narine on the outer, but Nicholas Pooran's side were overpowered on the big stage and dismissed for 118 in the penultimate over.

Veteran all-rounder Jason Holder shone with bat and ball (38 and 2/14), while their top-order showed some glimpses of promise with Kyle Mayers (20), Evin Lewis (14) and Brandon King (17) finding the boundary a few times each.

But beyond that there was not much joy, as the West Indies were outplayed in all aspects of the game by a Scotland side that were on a mission.

The road ahead

Just like Sri Lanka a day earlier, the West Indies now face a must-win encounter in their next match when they take on Zimbabwe in Hobart on Wednesday evening.

The West Indies are the only team at the T20 World Cup with two titles to their name, so bowing out in the First Round would not be seen as a good result for the Caribbean side.

Scotland battle it out against fellow European side Ireland in Hobart on Wednesday afternoon and a victory there could see Berrington's men qualify for the Super 12 stage.

West Indies: Evin Lewis, Kyle Mayers, Brandon King, Shamarh Brooks, Nicholas Pooran (c, wk), Rovman Powell, Jason Holder, Odean Smith, Akeal Hosein, Alzarri Joseph, Obed McCoy

Scotland: George Munsey, Michael Jones, Matthew Cross (wk), Richard Berrington (c), Calum MacLeod, Chris Greaves, Michael Leask, Mark Watt, Josh Davey, Safyaan Sharif, Bradley Wheal.

With ENG having a super strong limited overs squad, most of the discards should be looking at SCO/ WAL sides and we will have 3 strong teams in T20's going forward :inti:

West Indies will be struggling to qualify for the super 12 now with an abysmal net run rate and two tougher games against Ireland and Zimbabwe.

Hopefully it shakes up their cricket where it is needed.

Well, well, well the associates are on a mission here, what a start we've had to the WC! Wake up ICC, look what these teams are doing!

According to some posters here, this is now a tactical loss by WI to counter the tactical loss by SL 😂🤣

Two hugely surprising results in the very first two days of the qualifying round. It makes things all the more interesting.

That´s the beauty of the T20 format. It gives the weaker teams a chance to catch the stronger ones off-guard. I´ve said it many times before and I say it again, T20 cricket is a format of the game which comes very seriously close to football in terms of entertainment, thrill, and nail-biting finishes. I so love it!

Scottish defeated Bangladesh last year and now west indies they are getting better .

Sikandar Raza playing an incredible knock so far. He is so influential in this Zimbabwe team.

ZIM 139/5 (16.3) CRR: 8.42
Ireland opt to bowl

Sikandar 69*(38)

Sikandar Raza is the ideal batsman for Pakistan's middle order. If Zimbabwe were an associate team he could have shifted to playing for Pakistan.

ZIM 174/7 (20)
IRE 29/4 (4.5) CRR: 6 REQ: 9.63
Ireland need 146 runs in 91 balls

Done Ireland.

Another day. Another upset. Scotland this time.

These associates are making a statement.

Zimbabwe should win this one by a big margin.

There is a good possibility Zimbabwe and Scotland may knock out West Indies.

Ireland - 70/5 (10.3 overs; target: 175).

105 runs are needed from 57 balls.

Ireland are looking weak nowadays.

Man, what an interesting wc this has been so far. Associates are lighting up the world Cup.

Zim looks like they came with a mission. Raza is in the form of his life

Well done Scotland! (And also Namibia!)

Magnificent.

Is WI kidding themselves? Just saw their lineup. No Russell, Narine, Heatmayer and co. Did they not want to qualify to the main round? Lol

who would have thought nam bt Sl, sco bt WI, Zim bt ire.
and it will be the relatively inexperienced teams heading their groups with the more experienced coming in second.
surely this will shake up the two groups

Zimbabwe have 3 quality pacers . Remember how muzarabani schooled babar

Very good win for Zimbabwe. They are on quite some resurgence after Houghton took over... T20 WC qualification, ODI and T20 series wins over Bangladesh, an ODI win over Australia, they ran India close and now this good start to the WC.

Sikandar Raza played a breathtaking knock of 82 from 48 deliveries and claimed bowling figures of 1/22 to power Zimbabwe to a comprehensive 31-run win over Ireland in their opening match of the ICC Men's T20 World Cup at the Bellerive Oval in Hobart on Monday.

Zimbabwe suffer early setback

Ireland captain Andy Balbirnie opted to field after winning the toss and his bowlers responded well as they reduced Zimbabwe to 37/3 within the powerplay. Left-arm pacer Josh Little dismissed Regis Chakabva for a duck and then went on to dismiss Wesley Madhevere, who looked in good touch during his knock of 22. Spinner Simi Singh increased Zimbabwe's miseries further as he dismissed skipper Craig Ervine in the very next over.

Sikandar Raza shines once again

It was very important for Zimbabwe to get a partnership going after those early wickets and they got exactly that as Raza and Sean Williams put on a stand of 42 runs for the fourth wicket. Simi Singh dismissed Williams in the 11th over of the innings to bring Ireland back into the game but there was no stopping Raza who went completely berserk.

Even though wickets kept falling at one end, Raza carried on his assault from the other end. The Ireland bowlers had no answer to his onslaught as the 36-year-old kept motoring on. Even though he kept running out of partners throughout the innings, Raza did get good support at the back end from Luke Jongwe, who remained unbeaten on 20 from just 10 deliveries. Raza played right until the end of Zimbabwe's innings but he was cleaned up while going for a big shot in the very last delivery. The veteran all-rounder made 82 from 48 deliveries, an innings consisting of five fours and as many sixes, and powered Zimbabwe to a total of 174/7, which looked unlikely at one point.

Muzarabani and Ngarava's opening spell destroys Ireland

Ireland needed to get off to a good start to chase the target down but that was made impossible by Blessing Muzarabani and Richard Ngarava as the duo bowled a brilliant opening spell to get rid of their top-order. It was Ngarava who sent both Paul Stirling and Lorcan Tucker back to the dug out in the first three overs of the game. Muzarabani followed up with the wickets of Harry Tector and Andrew Balbirnie in the very next over to reduce Ireland to 22/4.

Campher and Dockrell try to resurrect Ireland's innings but Raza strikes again

Curtis Campher (27) and George Dockrell (24) tried their best to lead Ireland's recovery but their 42-run partnership was broken when Raza came on to bowl and cleaned Dockrell up completely. The veteran all-rounder played a magnificent knock when Zimbabwe needed it the most and now he delivered with the ball to give them a much-needed breakthrough as well. The likes of Gareth Delaney (24) and Barry McCarthy (22*) tried to get Ireland close to the target but they still fell short by 31 runs.

Hetmyer missed his rearranged flight (I'm not kidding) and got dropped from the squad. Russell and Narine don't appear to be interested in playing for WI.

The Associate nations look dangerous in this format, and have already caused the bigger sides some blushes.

Yeah and more importantly what did WI achieve last year with Gayle, Russell, Pollard, Bravo, Hetmyer all in the team? Literally nothing other than a last ball win against Bangladesh.

Namibia looks like a fantastic team. Their fielding and bowling are good.
Felt terrible for WI, but it is an excellent opportunity for Scotland to qualify for the next round.

This is a very tasty group.

Scotland, Ireland, Zimbabwe, West Indies - all four have the team to quality.

Oh man, just read up on the news on cricinfo. WI players man ... so much talent but zero commitment to play for the national team.

I agree, very interesting group. Zimbabwe will qualify. Who from the other 3 is going to move to the next round - looking forward to seeing that in the coming days.

Sri Lanka will most likely win against the UAE. But, I am not sure about their match vs. the Netherlands. If the Netherlands bat first and post 150+ total, SL's inexperienced batsmen could panic.

There is a greater possibility of West indies missing out on world cup. They have already lost badly their 1st game, they can definitely lose to ireland & zimbabwe. But will it impact West indian cricket. Not at all. They did not qualify for 2017 icc champions trophy & it did not bother them. They had terrible 2019 world cup campaign & equally bad 2021 t20 world cup.
They actually barely managed to qualify for 2019 odi world cup i remember in qualifiers they were not good at all.

ICC needs to ensure that Namibia & Zimbabwe cricket rises and competes well. To an extent race issues have impacted South African cricket massively post 99 world cup, & whethet one admits or not, Proteas have not been a force in limited overs cricket post 1999 due to those issues. Zimbabwe suffered the same fate ( post 1999).

With complete decline of West indies, Bangladesh’s gradual demise in cricket ( following their 2010-2019) & Afghanistan’s lack of impressive performances in icc events ( their last big win against top team in icc event was way back in 2016). Cricket pool is becoming very small.

I would want South africans have more influence in Namibian cricket & may be in future Lot of South africans who are not getting chances in South africa, go on and play for Namibian national team.

If Zim tops the chart, they should be in group 2 right? If so, I think it will actually become more of a threat and will be very competitive for group 2. They seem to be in good form here, especially Raza. Plus they have a good bowler in Muzarbani.

Namibia chose to bat vs Netherlands

Teams:

Netherlands (Playing XI): Vikramjit Singh, Max ODowd, Bas de Leede, Colin Ackermann, Tom Cooper, Scott Edwards(w/c), Roelof van der Merwe, Tim Pringle, Timm van der Gugten, Fred Klaassen, Paul van Meekeren

As it stands currently

Van meekeren is very good bowler.
Pace is good and can seam the ball a bit as well.
He is the fastest of all associate nations.

In the coming times, Namibia will also have to consider in the coloured system quota.

56/3 after 10 for Namibia. Netherlands on top

Trouble for lanka they need big wins . If Netherlands win which looks like

Netherlands seem content to ease to the win rather than romp home. Bad news for Sri Lanka.
