ICC T20 World Cup 2022: Round 1 Matches discussion

Namibia Nrr is good and they just need to win against UAE and they will be through and for Netherlands they just need to win against SL or lose by a small margin! SL is under huge pressure.

Huge game for SL now that UAE have decided to field. SL needs to score close to 200 runs. If they end up around 150 then they will give away the advantage.

Hopefully Namibia wins against UAE. I would love to see srilanka and west indies getting knocked out of the tournament.

The Netherlands have leapt to the top of Group A and are well placed to qualify for the Super 12 stage of the ICC Men's T20 World Cup following their nail-biting five-wicket triumph over Namibia in Geelong on Tuesday.

It came down to the final over with the Netherlands needing six to win and experienced all-rounder Bas de Leede held his nerve and made sure he did enough to clinch the Player of the Match award by guiding his side home with three balls remaining.

Clinical Dutch with one foot in the Super 12s

It was an excellent team performance from the Netherlands, with skipper Scott Edwards rotating his bowlers well to ensure Namibia could muster just 121/6 in good conditions at Kardinia Park.

The European side used seven different bowlers to put the clamps on their opponents, with de Leede (2/18) the main beneficiary and the only bowler to pick up multiple wickets for the winners.

Opening duo Vikramjit Singh (39) and Max O'Dowd (35) got the Netherlands off to a bright start and the victory target was always within reach, with de Leede’s steady knock of 30* enough to overcome a late wobble.

The victory sees the Netherlands move to the top of Group A and they can clinch a berth at the Super 12 stage by defeating Sri Lanka in their final group match on Thursday.

Big hitters fail to fire as Namibia finish below par with the bat

Jan Frylinck (43) may have top-scored for Namibia, but the left-hander chewed up plenty of valuable deliveries during the middle overs as the Netherlands' bowlers were on top.

David Wiese (11*) and JJ Smit (5*) are two of Namibia's most aggressive batters and the pair enjoyed just a brief time in the middle right at the death of the innings.

The duo actually took 12 from Timm van der Gugten's final over of to put a bit of decency in their score, but it proved too little too late as the Netherlands proved too strong.

Still hope for Namibia

While the narrow loss was not ideal for Gerhard Erasmus' talented side, they are still in the mix to make it through to the Super 12 stage if they can win their final match on Thursday against the UAE.

Namibia will enter that contest knowing what they need to do to qualify, given Sri Lanka take on the Netherlands in the other group match at the same venue in Geelong earlier in the day.

"This is a bare, bare pitch. Being a drop-in wicket, you won't see it break up too much. I'd like to bowl first," says Dirk Nannes in the pitch report.

Shanaka: Would've bowled first as well. Gunathilaka is injured, Asalanka comes in. We've got a balanced side. It was a bad day at the office - let's forget that. We never underestimate any sides.

CP Rizwan: Will bowl. Today is a warmer day, dew might come into play. Lot of positives from the last match. Got it to the last over. Hopefully want to build on that and put on a great show.

Hopefully Namibia wins against UAE. I would love to see srilanka and west indies getting knocked out of the tournament.

Namibia should win and qualify for the next round however SL and WI getting knocked lead to many one sided matches between Big teams and minnows who would qualify in place of SL and WI

So hoping for SL and WI to still qualify for the next round just for sake of quality of the tournament

UAE just handed the initiative to SL

They should have batted first at tried to muster 160 somehow

Really poor show from Sri Lanka. Their progression to the Super 12 is hanging by a thread at the moment as they not only need to win but win big for NRR purposes.

Suspect they need to win by 30+ runs today and again against Netherlands.

Try to get 50 in the powerplay and then it’s 100 in the last 14

That’s how UAE should see this

Was a stupid decision to bowl first. You can clearly see runs on the board is making life difficult for the Test nations.
Yes, They should have batted first. Even a total of 130 would have been an uphill task for SL here who is on the verge of getting eliminated!

A clinical bowling display helps Sri Lanka crush UAE

Sri Lanka put on an exhibition of fast bowling under lights to gain a big win over UAE after a hat-trick from leg-spinner Karthik Meiyappan in the first innings.

Karthik Meiyappan scripts history

Karthik Meiyappan made history against Sri Lanka when he became the first player to claim a hat-trick for UAE in T20Is. It was also the first hat-trick of the tournament.

Sri Lanka were cruising along when Meiyappan came into the bowl the 15th over, with Pathum Nissanka and Bhanuka Rajapaksa at the crease. The over turned the game on its head as it triggered a middle-order collapse, putting the pressure back on Sri Lanka.

Bhanuka Rajapaksa's attempt to go inside-out saw him hole out in the deep to Kashif Daud. Charith Asalanka departed for a golden duck as he nicked the ball to Vriitya Aravind.

Facing the hat-trick ball, Dasun Shanaka had no answer to the wonderful googly that found the gap between bat and pad and rattled his stumps as Meiyappan wheeled off in celebration.

Sri Lanka post a good total

On either side of the hat-trick, it was Sri Lanka who dominated the game for the most part. The opening partnership worth 42 runs between Pathum Nissanka and Kusal Mendis got the Asia Cup champions off to a great start. Despite the wicket of Mendis in the fifth over, Shanaka's men were the happier side at the end of the Powerplay with over 50 runs.

This was followed by a 50-run stand between Dhananjaya de Silva and Nissanka. The all-rounder was the aggressor between the two, smashing a 21-ball 33 consisting of three fours and a six before a run-out brought his innings to a premature end.

Nissanka, who got to his fifty in the same over as the hat-trick, got a move on and helped Sri Lanka post a competitive total. A blinder from Basil Hameed brought an end to his innings where he scored almost half of Sri Lanka's team total.

Sri Lanka quicks sizzle under lights

Three of UAE's first four victims were cleaned up as Dushmantha Chameera and Pramod Madushan put on an exhibition of fast bowling, swinging and seaming the new ball around.

Under the lights, UAE struggled to get going, losing four wickets inside the Powerplay to be reduced to 21/4. Wanindu Hasaranga came on to pile on UAEs woes and the scorecard soon read 42/7 in 12 overs with Sri Lanka eyeing a huge win.

Why Sri Lanka needed this big win

Sri Lanka and UAE are in the hunt for their first win of the tournament. Both the team suffered defeats in their respective first games – Namibia pulled off an upset win in the first game of the tournament against the Asia Cup Champions while Netherlands clinched a last-over thriller against UAE.

It was not just about the two points for the Islanders as they had a deficit in the net run rate that they needed to overcome against the UAE. Bowling UAE out for 73, Sri Lanka romped home to a 79-run win.

Sri Lanka's amazing show gives them a significant boost in a group where net run rate would likely play a role by the end.

Sri Lanka have gone past Netherlands net run rate which means that victory by any margin in their last match against them would be enough for them to qualify.

However, to top the group, they would still need to win big because Namibia have a much better NRR and hope Namibia either loses or doesn't win big against UAE.

So, most likely, Sri Lanka still heading towards our group.

Poor Netherlands after winning two matches still in a must win situation unless UAE beats Namibia.

Pretty poor to see SL celebrating like that after picking up wickets of UAE batters.
Not at all a champion mentality!

Oh UAE, you gifted Lanka a super 12 place with this poor show. Gotta feel bad for NED, played well and still may not qualify after winning two matches

with this big win SL now just need to beat Netherland and they will go through regardless of result of other match

Nederlands played well but they will still miss the ticket to super 12. Very sad to see.
Hopefully they beat srilanka.

Scotland look to build on their stunning win against West Indies when they face Ireland in their second match of the ICC T20 World Cup 2022 at the Bellerive Oval in Hobart.

In what is the seventh match of the tournament, the Group B encounter will see Scotland push for a place in the Super 12s against Ireland, who look to bounce back after a loss against Zimbabwe.

Overview

Scotland outplayed West Indies in their tournament opener to set up a stunning win and will fancy their chances when they face Ireland. A win here will see the Scots move to pole position to seal a spot in the Super 12s. In Ireland, they face a side in transition in T20Is. They come on the back of a spirited display against Zimbabwe, a contest that was decided by the individual brilliance of Sikandar Raza.

Scotland have come a long way in this format. If they progress from their group, West Indies may not be the only team to suffer a setback. Such was their confidence while facing off against the two-time champions. The Scots have bowlers who can provide early breakthroughs and have a capable top order to boot.

On a different day, Ireland could have looked at a different result against Zimbabwe and the early dismissal of Paul Stirling put a big dent in the former’s chase. Creditably, they managed to battle hard and finish with a respectable total despite losing four wickets in the powerplay, taking encouraging signs ahead of their encounter against Scotland.

Scotland largely relied on opener George Munsey with the bat against New Zealand but it was their approach that stood out against West Indies. Left-arm spinner Mark Watt was a revelation and received good support from Brad Wheal, Josh Davey and Michael Leask. Ireland’s Josh Little has bowled one of the spells of the tournament so far and will look to build on that start in this contest as well. Ireland, though, have to use all their experience in their ranks to stop a pumped up Scotland side.

Key Players

Mark Watt

Spinners have been among the wickets and have been deployed as early as the powerplay. Mark Watt played a crucial hand in tying West Indies up in knots and it won’t come as a surprise to see Richie Berrington turn to the left-arm spinner to seize momentum and put the Irish batters under pressure.

Curtis Campher

Curtis Campher has slowly grown into one of the key figures in Irish cricket and is an asset with the bat and ball. If not among the wickets, Campher, along with the rest of the middle-order batters will have to do well to fill the void left by Kevin O’Brien

ZIM is in hot form. It's a do-or-die match for WI today. Same for Ireland

Ireland has been amazing in the chase.
This qualifier round has been very entertaining.

What a chase by Ireland. This year's qualifier round has been something to witness!

Brilliant from Ireland. It was so so impressive.
They lost 4 wickets very early but Curtis campher and dockrell did so amazing.

Hopefully west indies gets knocked out soon. Team of mercenaries should not be playing world cup ahead of these talented teams.

What an incredible partnership, what an unbelievable comeback by Ireland! Wow, just wow! Easily the best game of the qualifying round so far. If only they hadn´t lost to Zimbabwe by such a huge margin, they would´ve stood a better chance now of going through to the next round by beating the West Indies.

It´s amazing how both Namibia and Scotland have given away the huge advantage that they had of qualifying by beating the big teams in their respective groups.

West Indies have won the toss and have opted to bat vs Zim

Zimbabwe (Playing XI): Regis Chakabva(w/c), Wesley Madhevere, Sean Williams, Sikandar Raza, Milton Shumba, Tony Munyonga, Ryan Burl, Luke Jongwe, Tendai Chatara, Richard Ngarava, Blessing Muzarabani

West Indies (Playing XI): Kyle Mayers, Johnson Charles, Evin Lewis, Nicholas Pooran(w/c), Shamarh Brooks, Rovman Powell, Jason Holder, Akeal Hosein, Alzarri Joseph, Odean Smith, Obed McCoy

I hope WI wins as that would make all the remaining matches knockoff matches. 7 of the 8 teams wiil be able to qualify by winning their 3rd match.

Not too bad - atleast not collapsed in a heap!

Let's go Zimbabwe. I m loving this....
Another one bites the dust.
Burraaaahhhhhhh.....
97-5 Sikandar Raza at it again. He is having amazing tournament.

If West Indies get knocked out it means Blessing Muzarabani v Babar all over again!!

West Indies no longer the force they were in T20s looks like they will need improvement in the future to win the tournament again at the moment they are behind the top teams.

No Gayle Russell Pollard Braithwaite Bravo and others who were regulars in the best leagues around the world its a changed team.

West Indies - 127/6 (18 overs).

Zimbabwe are looking good to win this one.

A Zimbabwe win means West Indies are probably eliminated. Their NRR is very poor.

Gayle is finished. He is 40+ now. Even T20 leagues no longer want him.

Of course the older players cannot play at the same level now they haven’t replaced them yet being 2 time world champions they have gone of the boil recently they need to find more power hitters.

West Indies got good score unfortunately.
Zimbabwe will need another sikandar raza special.

Two sixes.

WI - 150/6 (19.3 overs).

West Indies are giving their bowlers something to defend here.

Hopefully west indies gets knocked out soon. Team of mercenaries should not be playing world cup ahead of these talented teams.

Merc brigade have retired now. These are their regulars who've been playing for a while.

They remain comically poor against spin, but Powell is a good hitter of pace and is getting them to a competitive total here.

West Indies finish at 153/7 (20 overs).

Zimbabwe need 154 to win.

Zimbabwe should win this.

If West Indies get knocked out it means Blessing Muzarabani v Babar all over again!!

He's the best Zimbabwean pacer since Heath Streak. Vividly remember his debut in a D/N Test vs South Africa and although he didn't take a wicket, he looked promising then.

Good bowler.

Curtis Campher and George Dockrell combined for a 119-run partnership to guide Ireland to an unlikely six-wicket victory over Scotland in Hobart on Wednesday.

Dynamic duo get the job done for Ireland

Curtis Campher and George Dockrell may not yet have the accolades that Batman and Robin collected over the years, but the pair worked superbly in tandem to successfully guide Ireland’s run chase home.

The duo came to the crease with their side in a spot of bother at 61/4 and needing to score at greater than 10 runs per over to claim an unlikely victory.

But Campher (72* off 32 deliveries) and Dockrell (39* off 27) kept their cool, running hard between the wickets, finding the gap when required and even clearing the fence with some massive hitting to help Ireland to their first victory of the tournament.

Their 119-run stand was achieved from just 57 deliveries, with Campher – who was also the pick of the Ireland bowlers with figures of 2/9 - hitting a trio of consecutive boundaries from the penultimate over to clinch a famous triumph for the European side.

Records fall for Ireland during run chase

While Campher's innings was his best so far of his T20I career, it was also the highest of any Ireland player in the history of the T20 World Cup.

But that was just the beginning of a host of records that fell on a memorable day for Ireland.

The run chase was Ireland's highest ever successful run chase in T20I cricket and Campher and Dockrell’s stand of 119 was the highest ever partnership by Ireland in T20 World Cup history.

It also comes in as the third highest T20I partnership ever for Ireland and one would expect the Guinness to be flowing deep into the night in Hobart.

Curtis Campher was the hero for IrelandCurtis Campher was the hero for Ireland
Jones' masterclass not enough for brave Scots

Michael Jones' scintillating knock earlier in the day seemed distant after Ireland's memorable run chase, but the Scotland opener batted beautifully to help his side post a competitive total of 176/5.

The right-hander hit six fours and four sixes during an entertaining knock of 86 from just 55 deliveries as Scotland posted the then biggest score of the tournament at the time in perfect batting conditions at Bellerive Oval.

Jones found the middle of the bat throughout his innings, as the right-hander overcame the early loss of fellow opener George Munsey (1) to have valuable partnerships with Matthew Cross (28) and skipper Richie Berrington (37).

But it was all in vain as Campher and Dockrell combined to provide Ireland with one of their best wins of their cricketing journey.
