ICC T20 World Cup 2022: Round 1 Matches discussion

West Indies is a terrible t20is team they have won only 8 t20is in 2022 out of 24 which is just terrible and they lost to Ireland and Scotland.

These guys are good for that low grade league IPL.

Wonderful support from the crowd to Ireland.
Brilliant display of batting bowling and fielding from Ireland.

Outside sub continent, Irish somehow always get fans in any country throng the stadia to support their teams. Quite a passionate bunch when it comes to country/ sports

Do they play only in IPL among other leagues or IPL is the only prominent league comes to your mind??

LOL man IPL gives them millions of dollars for their mediocre skills. They are horrible players at international level.

I like West Indian players like odean Smith Nicholas pooran alzarri Joseph Evin Lewis akeal Hossein and few others but they really lack performance at international level.

Unfortunately most of the west indies players don't have skills to succeed at international level.

I would be hoping these teams beat some of the teams in super 12.
Bangladesh is easily beatable and so is Afghanistan.
Go Ireland nederlands and Zimbabwe/Scotland.

Ireland have moved through to the Super 12 stage of the ICC Men's T20 World Cup and sent two-time champions West Indies crashing out with a dominant nine-wicket triumph over the Caribbean side in Hobart on Friday.

It was an impressive team performance from the European side, with veteran opener Paul Stirling (66* off 48 balls) guiding Ireland past the West Indies score of 146/5 with more than two overs remaining.

Stirling the hero with powerful knock

While the West Indies' total may have been slightly under par on a good batting pitch at Bellerive Oval, Stirling took the game away from the Caribbean side with a brilliant piece of batting.

The experienced right-hander may have had just eight runs heading into Friday's cut-throat encounter, but that mattered little as he smashed the West Indies' attack to all parts of the picturesque Hobart ground.

Stirling set the scene with a massive six off Alzarri Joseph (0/39) in the third over and skipper Andrew Balbirnie (37 off 23) got in on the act as Ireland raced to 64/0 within the Powerplay.

The loss of Balbirnie did little to dampen the mood, as Lorcan Tucker (45*) came to the crease and a more composed Stirling changed his approach to expertly guide Ireland home.

Thirteen-year wait over for Ireland

The victory sees Ireland make it past the First Round of a T20 World Cup for the first time since 2009 and their healthy group of supporters in Hobart started celebrating well before the final ball.

It was fitting that Stirling was at the crease at the end to ensure the 13-year wait was over for the Irish, given the 32-year-old was also in their squad in 2009 at the second T20 World Cup in England.

Much has changed over the years for Ireland, but Stirling's contribution at the top has been one constant that has remained and will continue over the coming weeks Down Under.

Where to now for the West Indies?

While the expectations for the West Indies in Australia were somewhat lower than normal given the absence of a host of former stars, the Caribbean side will still be bitterly disappointed they couldn't qualify for the Super 12 stage.

There were some positives for Nicholas Pooran's men, but the captain himself struggled for runs throughout the tournament and more consistency is needed if they are to once again reach the lofty heights they are capable of.

Veteran all-rounder Jason Holder (0/23) bowled well against Ireland and battled away powerfully all tournament, whole fellow pacer Alzarri Joseph also showed some good signs.

But it was left to too few, with the only two-time champions at this year's edition of the tournament bowing out at the first stage for the first time since the inaugural tournament in 2007.

How delighted I´m that Ireland are through to the next round, a team which truly deserves to go through. It may not sound good for me to be saying this, but I´m equally most happy and satisfied that the West Indies have been done away with for the tournament. A bunch of non-serious cricketers who, it seemed, didn´t even deserve to be playing the qualifying round! Their cricket will keep going downhill if they keep on treating the game as a joke. Good riddance for the time being, though.

How bitterly disappointing it must be for Namibia to be losing to the UAE today and having lost to the Netherlands already, having downed a much stronger team in Sri Lanka in the very opening game of the tournament. What a sad turn the events have taken for them! However, if I may say without sounding biased, I rate the Netherlands team higher than a lot of other associate teams and, in my opinion, it'll in fact be good for the tournament, if they happen to qualify for the next round.
Although what I said regarding the Netherlands still stands, but that was one brilliant fightback by Namibia - David Wiese, to be precise. above 80 or close to it were required off seven overs, and they had only three wickets in hand. What an incredible, fighting, innings by Wiese. Namibia are lucky that he plays for them.

Toss: Scotland won the toss and decided to bat

Namibia should have qualified instead of SL. They lost out on run rate :(

Nope, brother. Namibia won only one match, whereas both Sri Lanka and the Netherlands won two and lost one.

So we are getting Netherlands in our group and Ireland or Zimbabwe/Scotland?

Or is it not decided yet?

What is wrong with this Sharif guy?

Saw this in the last game too. He just comes on and releases the pressure applied by the opening bowlers

Looks like Namibia and Scotland ran out of gas after hammering SL and WI..that's why they will be associates

Sikandar Raza is an absolutely quality player.
I would love to have someone like him in Pakistan side.

14 runs are needed from 18 balls.

Zimbabwe have to win the game by 19.1 overs to top the group.

All over. Zimbabwe win by 5 wickets.

I think the group in which India and Pakistan are, have got easier teams to play against - Netherlands and Zimbabwe.

While Sri Lanka and Ireland are relatively tougher deals in the other group.

Wow westindies is out! Westindians play in leagues around the world and produce excellent players but more often than not fail as a team.

Zimbabwe registered a comprehensive five-wicket win over Scotland in their ICC Men's T20 World Cup encounter in Hobart on Friday to book their berth in the Super 12 stage of the mega event.

Zimbabwe bowlers keep the Scotland batters quiet

Richie Berrington's decision to bat first after winning the toss didn't turn out well for Scotland as they lost the wickets of Michael Jones and Matthew Cross quite early in the innings.

The likes of George Munsey, Berrington and Calum MacLeod tried their best to lead Scotland's recovery but they never got the necessary momentum and acceleration they needed. Munsey batted well to buld stands of 40 and 34 runs with Berrington and Macleod respectively, but the partnerships didn't come at a swift scoring rate. Munsey, who scored 54, also consumed 51 deliveries without providing any useful impetus to the innings.

Craig Ervine and his men needed a steady start to lay the foundation for this chase. But they suffered two early jolts as they lost the wickets of Regis Chakabva and Wesley Madhevere with just seven runs on the board.

Scotland got the early breakthroughs they needed to defend their total and they had to thank Brad Wheal and Mark Watt for helping them get those wickets.

Skipper Ervine leads from the front

Craig Ervine stood tall when his side needed him the most as he played a superb knock of 58 from 54 deliveries to get Zimbabwe home. He was involved in three crucial stands of 35 and 64 with Sean Williams and Sikandar Raza respectively, which helped in steadying Zimbabwe's ship.

Raza shines with both bat and ball

Sikandar Raza has made it a habit of delivering consistently with both bat and ball. The veteran all-rounder bowled a super spell of 4-0-20-1 earlier in the match and then followed it up with an unbeaten knock of 40 from just 23 balls to take Zimbabwe into the Super 12s. He made a huge impact on the result of this match with his all-round contribution.

They also finished at bottom of the table. Not just out.

West Indies do not seem serious about international cricket. They need a serious team with a serious captain.

They are serious and want to freeze out their mercenaries

Pakistan is kind of doing the same since Misbah took over

This WC is not likely to be that competitive. In G1, England & Australia are almost certain to qualify. In G2, 2 out of India, RSA and Pakistan will qualify. The games between these teams will assure the winners qualification barring a shocking series of events.

Sadly WI are finished.

What great progress has Sikandar Raza Butt made in his game this year! What a beast he has become within the space of just a year. I really hope that he goes on to perform well in the remainder of the tournament as well. Pure joy watching him bat!
