Afghanistan and Netherlands are still in the race to reach the knockout stages of the ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup 2023 following early triumphs over top-four contenders and clinical wins in their last start.

A fourth victory here for Afghanistan would have them draw level on eight points with both Australia and New Zealand in third and fourth-place, and firmly in the mix for a spot in the knockout stages.

With only two wins so far, Netherlands have a trickier path to the semi-finals but could give their chances a huge boost with two points from this crunch clash.

The sides have only met in nine previous ODIs with Netherlands winning the first of those in 2009 but only coming out on top once more in 2012.

Afghanistan won all three of their encounters in Doha at the start of last year when batting first and holding Netherlands at arm’s length in the chase, but the stakes are much higher this time for the two emerging sides both in good form.

When: November 03, 2023, 2:00 PM IST

Where: Ekana Cricket Stadium, Lucknow

Teams

Netherlands:

In light of the pacers' recent achievements in Lucknow matches, the Netherlands may contemplate replacing Shariz Ahmad with Ryan Klein.

In terms of tactical considerations, it's worth noting that Scott Edwards boasts an impressive average of 65.92 against spin in ODIs, having scored 791 runs from 794 balls faced. Edwards will play a pivotal role for the Netherlands when confronting the spin talents of Mujeeb Ur Rahman and Rashid Khan.

Afghanistan:

Rahmanullah Gurbaz had to assume wicket-keeping responsibilities early in the previous game due to Ikram Alikhil's injury to his right-hand little finger while attempting to collect the ball. Head coach Jonathan Trott has confirmed that Ikram is ready to return to play.

In terms of tactics and strategy, it's noteworthy that left-arm fast bowlers have proven to be a challenge for Netherlands' batters in recent years. Max O'Dowd and Vikramjit Singh have been dismissed by left-arm pacers six times each since 2021, while Bas de Leede and Teja Nidamanuru have fallen victim to them five times. Wesley Barresi has also been dismissed by left-arm pacers on three occasions, and all these players have an average of under 30 against left-arm quicks. Therefore, the in-form Fazalhaq Farooqi, who was named the player of the match in the last game, will be a crucial bowler when facing the Netherlands' top order.

Squads:

Netherlands Squad: Vikramjit Singh, Max ODowd, Wesley Barresi, Colin Ackermann, Scott Edwards(w/c), Bas de Leede, Sybrand Engelbrecht, Logan van Beek, Shariz Ahmad, Aryan Dutt, Paul van Meekeren, Saqib Zulfiqar, Teja Nidamanuru, Ryan Klein, Roelof van der Merwe

Afghanistan Squad: Rahmanullah Gurbaz, Ibrahim Zadran, Rahmat Shah, Hashmatullah Shahidi(c), Azmatullah Omarzai, Ikram Alikhil(w), Mohammad Nabi, Rashid Khan, Mujeeb Ur Rahman, Naveen-ul-Haq, Fazalhaq Farooqi, Noor Ahmad, Riaz Hassan, Abdul Rahman, Najibullah Zadran

Afghans should win and reach 8 points.

If Netherlands win, they can improve their chance of making it to CT 2025.

Afghanistan are firm favourites here because of their in form batting.

As we know how good they are with their bowling attack.

But Netherlands can also counter them, it would be an interesting encounter for sure.

Come on Afghanistan , rooting for you . If they win today then Afghanistan will reach at 5 position in point table by beating Top Teams unlike other who have beaten minnows Still celebrate like world beater . :ua

Even if Afghanistan win this match
They cannot possibly beat BOTH south Africa and Australia afterwards. Would win 1 at most

they win 2 more games
They would reach 10 points

Not enough for qualification considering their pathetic NRR

Play noor ahmed in every game from now on . Its must . Hoping afghans win two and qualify

Two completely different teams. Both teams have pretty solid bowling unit. Reasonably matured unit. Only difference is Netherlands is tactically excellent. Afghanistan goes in as favorites.

Honestly, rooting for Netherlands. I love the way they play the game and they’ve managed to do so much with not much opportunity given to them. Defeating South Africa in ODIs is no joke.

Netherlands won the toss and chose to bat first.

TEAMS:

Afghanistan (Playing XI): Rahmanullah Gurbaz, Ibrahim Zadran, Rahmat Shah, Hashmatullah Shahidi(c), Azmatullah Omarzai, Ikram Alikhil(w), Mohammad Nabi, Rashid Khan, Mujeeb Ur Rahman, Fazalhaq Farooqi, Noor Ahmad

SA are vulnerable while chasing . Pakistan almost won it .had that drs gone their way .

Have to say, impressed by the Dutch amateurs. They dropped a game against SRL, otherwise indeed was in contention for a SF. They are going to thrash Poms as well if they can bat first.

Good team Dutch Bangladesh have de valued so many tournaments hope to see Dutch at CT next year.

NL batters made to look better than they are by poor Afghan bowling and captaincy. So much legside bowling ending up in boundaries. Afghan under pressure as today they were favourites

Max ODowd was playing nicely but he got Run-out for 42 runs. Netharlands is 2 down for 78 after 14 overs.

Probably 250 was enough here and the Dutch were on their way, inexperience costing them. They bat deep though - bottom half scored more than twice that top 5 against SRL, SAF & BD; but against AFG spinners might not be easy.

Still three more capable batters remain in the shed for Netherlands. Lucknow is a nightmarish ground to chase anything over 240.

The way afghans batting in this tournament they can chase anything below 300.

If AFG go on to win this match they will be in serious contention for KOs. Their next matches is against a weakened AUS and a SA if made to chase will fall flat. AFG cannot make it via NRR if they end up on 10 points and tie with NZ/PAK unless NZ/PAK stay on 8 points.

They don't have any chance vs aus tbh and against SA yes if afghans bats first.

Not here - this is a different surface where swing, seem & spin comes into play. But, Dutch might not post even 200 here because every time when their bottom half scored runs, they had their best player (Edwards) in middle. They started the game exactly the way it should be there - attack new ball in day light and get a head start, but lost their track.

Noor is weaving magic. On some pitches Afghans are perfectly capable of slaying one of t he big guns they are yet to meet.

This is what Bangladesh lacks. X factor bowlers like Rashid, Noor. Always standard finger spinners. Off spin or left arm spin.

Lol 4thb run out . Ikram has been wonderful with his glove work

Another Netherlands batter ends up short! What is happening with their running.

AFG are playing Noor again. Good move.

They should always play 4 spinners on this type of surface.

that is one hell of a fielding effort by the Afghans

I can’t recall any game where 4 of top 5 getting run out. 1975 WC Final Viv alone got three Aussies run out (& 5 in total were rung out that day), but four out of top five…!!

Is it only me that feels
Netherlands is playing better against this Afghanistan spin than the rest of the teams barring India.

When batters 2-5 all get run out it's going to be very difficult to put on a big total. Not a great day for the Netherlands.

If Tomorrow's game is a washout

NZ will be on 9 points
Pakistan will be on 7 points

If NZ-SL also is a washout or NZ loses, then NZ will finish on maximum 10 points. While Afghanistan can get 10 points if they can win today and beat SA.

In this case, NRR doesn't matter as Afghanistan would have 5 wins and NZ just 4 wins so Afg would qualify

Netherlands normally very professional. I think mental tiredness as not used to playing so often.

Afghanistan is in such good form that i won't be surprised if they beat one of the big guns. Australia is missing a lot of players for different reasons.

What if pak win tomorrow and against eng and SL-NZ game washout?

Netherlands all out for 179

The lowest total Afghanistan have bowled out an opposition in ICC ODI World Cup

hope afg chase this in 20 overs and get their rr up

So the Dutchies are skittled out for 179.

I expect the Afghans to win quite comfortably.

Pak would be on 10 points
NZ on 9 points
Afg 10 points

It would come down to NRR. At the moment Pakistan's is better.
If AFG chase 180 in 36 Overs They will surpass Pakistan's NRR
To surpass NZ NRR they have to win in 8 Overs which is impossible

They have to win in less than 34 Overs to bring their NRR in Positive (currently there NRR is -0.718)

They can definitely chase this down in less than 34 overs.

180 in 33.5 overs is quite easy in modern day cricket.

If they start well without much damage in power play they can shift through gears during the middle phase. Hope Trott has made them aware of it.

Incredible maturity in the last 2 chases by them. Can they do it third time. So far their body language looks good. But Netherlands is very strategical. They can catch you by surprise

Don't think 179 is enough. 220-230 (like the BD game) could've made things interesting.
