ICC World Cup 2023: Australia (286) beat England (253) by 33 runs to boost their chances of reaching the semi-finals

Teams are scoring effortlessly 350, 400 this edition. This bazball team is struggling to cross 200.

For sure (if it happens).

Pakistan still have a mountain to climb. Have to beat England, SL have to beat NZ, and then hope that NRR stays good enough.

Correction: If Pakistan win and NZ lose, Pakistan should be through. NRR will not be needed then.

Afghans are unlikely to beat Aus and SA.

I have no idea what happened to them how can a top team like that suddenly looks this awful
Many over-the-hill cricketers in the squad. Few fresh faces tried or given chances over the old ones.

Woakes needs to take this deep. Aggression is fine, but you have to play percentage cricket

Why did they even left out Liam Plunkett he was awesome during the middle overs but as soon as they won the last world cup they left him out of the squad

Finally Poms are trying to mend their NRR, might be too late - they’ll have to win both remaining games.

Both pace bowlers mark wood and Haris going for plenty of runs in this world cup

With Maxwell back Australia can bowl 2025 overs from zampa Maxwell head alone

New zealand's no show made the life of other teams a lot easier.
It was always on the cards; they had a few easier games at the start of the tournament.

Their shortcomings in the bowling department became open as the tournament progressed.

While their batting is quite impressive, their bowling attack is quite underwhelming and, in a way, overrated (IMHO).

This should be curtains for England (unless Adil and Wood somehow manage to score the remaining 34 off 12 balls, which seems very unlikely at the moment)

Painful to watch this English side. They tried to take it deep but still lost wickets

They missed a trick as the game went deep and the dew slowly started to become an Achilles heel for the bowlers and fielders. Still, Australia won this, thanks to some brainless batting by the English main batters.

You have to feel sorry for them at this stage. They simply could not compete. They really tried today but couldn't. It felt like they were trying to survive (or not get embarrassed) rather than competing. I feel sorry for them

One has to feel sorry for them at this point. You could tell their confidence is at an all time low

Thank you Australia.

CT25 hopes still alive for BD. Beat SL, hope Pak beats England because England will demolish Netherlands. Shakib and Co should still be ashamed of themselves losing to Netherlands.

England are knocked out as Australia continue their march towards semi-final spot

Nobody takes champions trophy seriously. It's not a wc.
Still and ICC event. It should be taken seriously since its there. I personally did not mind CT pre T20wc but now it seems irrelevant to have another 50ov tournament when there’s so much cricket as it is. But since it’s still around and cricket a sport which more recognised for international matches between countries, I guess it has to be kept afloat. Would not mind it being scrapped all together though.

Australia’s bowlers successfully defended 286 to beat England and strengthen their grip on a top-four spot at the ICC Men's Cricket World Cup 2023.

A patchy batting display saw Australia bowled out for 286, with Marnus Labuschagne top-scoring with 71 under the hot afternoon sun in Ahmedabad.

But a superb bowling display denied England a morale-boosting win, with Adam Zampa starring once again to become the tournament’s leading wicket-taker.

Dawid Malan (50), Ben Stokes (64) and Moeen Ali (42) were the pick of the batters in another disappointing display from the 2019 champions, but Zampa’s extraordinary figures of 3/21 helped tie England in knots.

Australia’s win sees them put one foot into the semi-finals, while England’s sixth defeat finally sees them mathematically out of contention to finish in the top four.

The Australian team returned to the field of play after the interval wearing black armbands in memory of Mitchell March's grandfather Ross, who passed away on Friday.

Mitch Marsh, having flown home to be with his family, will rejoin the squad in Mumbai by Monday.

Match 36: Australia beat England by 33 runs

The wicket of Jonny Bairstow to the very first ball of the second innings gave Australia's chances a significant boost, with the opener strangled down the leg side as he looked to clip Mitchell Starc’s wayward first ball away.

Joe Root and Dawid Malan looked to rebuild through the first powerplay. But Root’s run of low scores continued as a fine edge accounted for England’s number three on review to leave the team 19/2 and in big trouble.

Stokes and Malan ensured the game would at least go deep with a solid partnership worth 84 runs.

But the opener fell shortly after reaching his half-century, holing out to Pat Cummins to depart for 50 from 64 deliveries.

And Jos Buttler's disappointing tournament continued as he scored just one run before falling to Adam Zampa.

Not for the first time it was Ben Stokes who held the key for England, reaching his half-century in style with a six and helping England accelerate as the run rate began to climb, putting on a decent partnership
with Moeen Ali.

But Stokes fell to Adam Zampa, letting out a howling "no!" as he swept a catch to Marcus Stoinis to swing the match momentum firmly in Australia’s favour.

And Liam Livingstone’s dreadful run of form continued as he departed for just two runs, making rare clean contact but brilliantly caught by substitute fielder Sean Abbot off Cummins.

With the run rate climbing to close to ten an over, Moeen had to go big. But Australia set the trap and it did the job, with David Warner taking the catch in the deep off Adam Zampa to send the last recognised England batter back to the hutch for 42.

Moeen’s departure ended England’s realistic hopes, and, after a brief flurry from David Willey (14), Chris Woakes (32) and Adil Rashid (20), Australia wrapped up the win with 33 runs to spare.

Earlier, England fielded first and bowled nicely after captain Jos Buttler won the toss in their clash with Australia in Ahmedabad.

Chris Woakes struck early, removing the dangerous Travis Head (11) in his very first over.

Head's partner, David Warner, looked to keep up the attack from the other end, but Woakes accounted for him as well in the sixth over to leave Australia at 38/2.

Steve Smith and Marnus Labuschagne were watchful thereafter, bedding in during a period of accumulation that yielded a 75-run partnership from 96 balls.

But Australia failed to build on that platform, with Adil Rashid coming into the attack to take two quick wickets.

First the spinner accounted for Smith (44) with a miscue to backward point, before Inglis fell with a clip to the same area – with both catches taken by Moeen Ali.

Australia again looked to rebuild after the double strike, with Labuschagne joined by Cameron Green out in the middle and challenged by a high-speed barrage from Mark Wood.

Labuschagne eventually succumbed to the paceman, trapped lbw for 71 from 83 balls, with the decision upheld on review, much to the batter’s dissatisfaction.

Green’s frenetic start to his innings looked far from secure, but he survived a tricky stretch to put together another helpful partnership with Marcus Stoinis to take the total beyond 200.

Just as Australia looked to launch, so a wicket fell again, with Green swiping across the line and being cleaned up by the excellent David Willey for 47 from 52 balls.

And Australia struggled to accelerate towards the close. Liam Livingstone came back in the attack as a match-up option and was smashed for ten runs off the first three balls of his crucial over.

But a brilliant catch by Jonny Bairstow accounted for Stoinis (35) to halt that momentum, and Wood removed captain Cummins (10) as the wickets continued to fall.

Five wickets fell in total during the final powerplay, as England bowled Australia out with three balls of the final over still remaining.

A fortuitous but helpful contribution from Adam Zampa came to an end when he was caught behind off Woakes for 29, and Mitchell Starc was the final wicket to fall two deliveries later when he was caught by Moeen in the circle.

Woakes finished with 4/54 from his 9.3 overs, with Rashid’s 2/38 from ten the most economical figures.

But, for the third time in succession, England’s batters failed to back up the bowlers’ fine work, sliding to yet another disappointing defeat to stay rooted to the foot of the standings.

It is not about winning. it will be embarrassing not even being able to take part in it.

Thank you Australia.

CT25 hopes still alive for BD. Beat SL, hope Pak beats England because England will demolish Netherlands. Shakib and Co should still be ashamed of themselves losing to Netherlands.
They don’t deserve it - CT qualification means few mn $ to loot for BAL Papon & Co. It’s better SRL or the Dutch get it this time - it’ll be better utilised.

politics aside. BD needs to get in CT somehow. Because CT25 surely theyll have sorted things out. Dutch will make CT boring tbh. Yes they beat SA and BD but still an associate and dont bring much to it. SL will still make it if they even lose BD but beat NZ. So BD beating SL will be good for Pak that means SL has to beat NZ to get CT25 because even if Pak beats England, England will smash Netherlands and if SL lose to both BD and SL, it will mean SL AND Netherlands miss out.

Its puzzling how gun batsmen like Bairstow and Buttler can be this badly out of form at the same time. Not to mention their star batsman Root.
Watching them I feel if they are even interested in this tournament. They looked like this right from their opening match against NZ. Something is seriously wrong with their dressing room I feel.

Dutch are out & Poms are in - icc won’t like an ICC event without England. So…… if somehow Dutch beats Poms, means it’s bad luck for PAK, BD & SRL.

Now say ENG thrashes NED, who will also loose big to IND - their NRR will be shattered & they are out. Poms will beat NED large enough to pull their NRR - probably over BD.

Now, before that if SRL beats BD - fun over, they qualify and Poms qualify as well by thrashing NED.

If, some how our pathetic lot wins the game, it has to be inside 43 overs or by 45/46 runs to cross SRL on table (via NRR, with 4 points each)

Then the last game - who looses better to Aussies and Kiwis. I believe both will loose - SRL has an easier opponent, but higher difficulty because before PAK - ENG game, Kiwis will try to maximise that NRR gap, while Aussies might rest few players, particularly their pacers - they’ll finish 3rd by beating BD by narrowest of margins if they can beat AFGs, which they should do comfortably. And, IND-SAF game will confirm who’ll take Aussies at Mumbai. PAK/NZ can’t go to 12 points means they’ll finish at 4th (whoever), and take on winners of IND/SAF at Eden. If AFGs beat Aussies somehow, then Aussies will need to thrash us so that they don’t miss out in a possible 3 of 4 (AFG) way tie on 10 points.

I love this format so much for this last round (s) drama.

All will be quiet in our western front if our golden boys loose to SRL and bring the wooden spoon from Pune.
