England have endured a horror campaign as they look to defend the ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup trophy that they famously won for the first time in 2019.

The titleholders have slumped to five defeats in six matches to be all but out of contention for a spot in the semi-finals ahead of what is always a mouth-watering clash between the heated rivals.

England have to win all of their three remaining matches convincingly enough to also boost their net run rate to a reasonable level, while hoping that other results go their way to keep their faint hopes alive.

But form counts for little when the arch-rivals meet and England can like their chances against an Australia outfit suddenly hit hard by a freak injury and more personal concerns.

Australia have won four on the trot to surge into third in the standings and the semi-final places, though will take on their old foes without dynamic duo Glenn Maxwell and Mitchell Marsh.

Both will be missed though there will also be frustration with Maxwell after he sustained a concussion in a golf cart incident, while Marsh has returned home for personal reasons.

It means another shake up for the Australia side that has recently accommodated the return of Travis Head, with all-rounders Cameron Green and Marcus Stoinis both putting their hands up for a recall.

England have their own concerns with fitness as well as form, and are yet to find an answer for replacing pacer Reece Topley who was one of their few strong performers but has now been ruled out of the tournament.

When: November 04, 2023, 2:00 PM IST

Where: Narendra Modi Stadium, Ahmedabad

Teams

Australia:

Australia has encountered a rather unusual situation in the World Cup, as they have not been able to field their full squad of 15 players for any game so far. Just when it seemed like they were on track to do so, unexpected events occurred. Glenn Maxwell had an unfortunate slip and fall from a golf cart, while Mitchell Marsh had to leave for Perth due to family reasons. As a result, Marcus Stoinis is set to make a comeback after recovering from a calf injury, and Cameron Green returns after being left out in the last match against New Zealand.

In terms of tactics and strategy, Australia has had to constantly shuffle their batting order, and this trend is likely to continue. Steve Smith will return to his preferred No. 3 position, and Marnus Labuschagne will regain his No. 4 spot. With Maxwell absent, the responsibility for providing firepower in the lower order will fall on Green and Stoinis. Australia will continue their aggressive approach with David Warner and Travis Head opening the innings, and they will also hope for Mitchell Starc, who has not had a standout performance with the ball yet, to find his rhythm after a less impressive day in Dharamsala.

England:

England's bowlers delivered a solid performance in their match against India, making it unlikely for any changes in the bowling attack. It's also improbable that one of their senior players will be omitted to make way for Harry Brook.

In terms of tactics and strategy, England is facing a challenging situation, as articulated by Stokes on Friday, November 3. The team hasn't yet identified a clear solution to the various issues that have plagued their World Cup campaign. Their approach will revolve around fundamental plans, such as their batsmen finally finding their form and ensuring that their bowlers either have a substantial target to defend or make the most of their efforts, regardless of the conditions.

Squads:

England Squad: Jonny Bairstow, Dawid Malan, Joe Root, Ben Stokes, Jos Buttler(w/c), Moeen Ali, Liam Livingstone, Chris Woakes, David Willey, Adil Rashid, Mark Wood, Sam Curran, Harry Brook, Gus Atkinson, Brydon Carse

Australia Squad: David Warner, Travis Head, Mitchell Marsh, Steven Smith, Marnus Labuschagne, Glenn Maxwell, Josh Inglis(w), Pat Cummins(c), Mitchell Starc, Adam Zampa, Josh Hazlewood, Marcus Stoinis, Alex Carey, Cameron Green, Sean Abbott

its a dead rubber! England is already out of the tournament, so how it could be a game of the tournament?

Must win for England. They are not eliminated yet (mathematically).

Aussies can formally eliminate them tomorrow.

Their CT 2025 qualification is on the line.

They are currently #10 in points table. They need to finish among top 8 to secure qualification.

England won the toss and chose to field first.

TEAMS:
England
(Playing XI): Jonny Bairstow, Dawid Malan, Joe Root, Ben Stokes, Jos Buttler(w/c), Moeen Ali, Liam Livingstone, Chris Woakes, David Willey, Adil Rashid, Mark Wood

Australia (Playing XI): David Warner, Travis Head, Steven Smith, Marnus Labuschagne, Josh Inglis(w), Cameron Green, Marcus Stoinis, Pat Cummins(c), Mitchell Starc, Adam Zampa, Josh Hazlewood

So, England are expected to floor Australia?

Wow, Australia have a long tail. If England can manage to break this partnership then it's Inglis and the tail left. Basically if you get Warner and Head early you have a chance against this Australian side. Smith and Labu aren't explosive enough. Stoinis and co are more like your cameo players rather than players that can construct the innings in difficult conditions/circumstances

Considering England's form and Aussie bowling attack, I think Aussies should win if they can reach 280.

After 17 overs, Australia is 82/2. Labuschane and Smith have steadied the ship for Australia but have to score some quick runs here to increase the Run-Rate.

adil rashid has got smith. Australia is 3 down now for 115 after 22.2 overs

Adil has another one. 4 down now for Australia for 119. they are in trouble,

24 overs and 119/4. going at around 5 an over is not a good outing for Aussie batter atm.

If you get the openers early, Australia don't seem nearly as impressive. Its manifested in almost all of their innings once Warner, Marsh, Head have gone. Be it 10-2 or 210-2; Once the openers go they look far less threatening as a batting unit.

Labuschagne gone for 71.

A well-made knock comes to an end and now Australia need their all rounders to do the job.

Massive opportunity for England to clean this tail. They'll miss Archer in situations like this

Livingstone dishing out pies and half trackers but gets Stoinis in the end. What a rubbish bowling attack

just when I was supporting Austrlia for the first time ever. They are failing! Need Aus to win for BD to have any chance for CT, not that they deserve it. Because I think Pak will beat Eng. BD if with a miracle beats the mighty lanka lions, will get CT instead of England!

Aussies letting me down!

Liam Livingstone Removes Marcus Stoinis for 35

Australia are 8 down

Omds! Aussies gifting the wickets! Cummings is wth plenty overs left

Australia bowled out for 286 runs in 49.3 overs

Smith and Green fell just short of their half-centuries, while Marnus went to score a crucial 71.

Well Zampa did well in the end to take it beyond 280. One stage looked England would get the last two ans bowl them out less than 260

Australia got 40 odd handy runs for their last 2 wickets! I think this is 20 more than what England would have liked.:)

England basically fluked a World Cup win inspite of being mediocre in white ball cricket for so many year.

In contrast, South Africa have always come up with strong team but failed to fluke a World Cup win inspite of numerous attempts, half of them ending up in dramatic fashion.

Good game bubbling up here.

England behind the 8-ball but Malan and Stokes have endured a tricky little period and are fighting it out.

If England chases this, it will become an absolutely massive day for Pakistan's chances.

English batters are struggling to find gap. Hitting everything to the fielders in the ring.

Hoping for a English win as this will keep the remaining matches even more interesting.

England went for so being exciting to a boring lacklustre side

England need a refresh. Malan and Ali will be gone after this past 36yo. Butler, Rashid, Bairstow, Stokes should be gone after CT. Next world cup should have new captain.

So an Australia win here to completely crush englands morale before the Pakistan game? Or an England win to give Pakistan a chance of passing Australia given everything goes their way…

England are clearly shot of confidence. They have lost their way due to their awful performance in this tournament and no longer has the interest to show any fight.

Australia will win this despite not posting a huge total.
