If Afghanistan can win their two remaining matches at the World Cup they will qualify for the semi-finals, but their task will not be easy with a tough encounter first-up against Australia.

Afghanistan will be buoyed entering the clash following three consecutive victories that have breathed life into their campaign that started with what now looms as a costly defeat at the hands of Bangladesh in their tournament opener.

The five-time champions also made a slow start to the tournament with losses in their opening two fixtures, but have since found form to win five matches on the trot and move within striking distance of booking a place in the semi-finals.

Australia's hopes of qualifying look set to be boosted with the likely availability of key players Mitch Marsh and Glenn Maxwell after the pair missed the victory over England on Saturday, though it would leave Pat Cummins' side with a selection dilemma as they try and squeeze all their stars into the XI.

It remains to be seen whether all-rounders Marcus Stoinis and Cameron Green make way for Marsh and Maxwell, or whether one of the specialist batters is set for a stint on the sidelines.

Australia have class players in every department, so Afghanistan will need to be at their best if they are to push the 2015 World Cup champions.

When: November 07, 2023, 2:00 PM IST

Where: Wankhede Stadium, Mumbai

Teams

Australia:

Australia's hopes of fielding their strongest XI are in doubt due to Steve Smith's vertigo issue, and his availability for the upcoming match depends on how he feels on the match morning. On a positive note, Glenn Maxwell has been active in the nets, and Mitchell Marsh has returned to India after his grandfather's unfortunate passing.

In terms of tactics and strategy, Australia has been most effective when batting first and setting substantial scores, and they intend to maintain this approach despite Afghanistan's spin threat. The conditions under lights will also be a crucial factor, even though Adam Zampa has been their standout bowler in the tournament.

Afghanistan:

Afghanistan is expected to stick with their spin-heavy bowling attack, regardless of the prevailing conditions. It was evident when Hashmatullah Shahidi, with an engaging smile, expressed his desire for a turning pitch.

In terms of tactics and strategy, the Afghanistan captain was reluctant to divulge specifics, even when questioned twice about his plans for using spinners against Australia's strong hitters. He did mention having four options for opening the bowling, including the influential Mujeeb-ur-Rahman, who has been vital in the powerplay phase, which represents Afghanistan's best opportunity to exert early pressure on the Australian team.

Squads:

Australia Squad: Travis Head, David Warner, Steven Smith, Marnus Labuschagne, Josh Inglis(w), Cameron Green, Marcus Stoinis, Pat Cummins(c), Mitchell Starc, Adam Zampa, Josh Hazlewood, Mitchell Marsh, Glenn Maxwell, Sean Abbott, Alex Carey

Afghanistan Squad: Rahmanullah Gurbaz, Ibrahim Zadran, Rahmat Shah, Hashmatullah Shahidi(c), Azmatullah Omarzai, Ikram Alikhil(w), Mohammad Nabi, Rashid Khan, Mujeeb Ur Rahman, Fazalhaq Farooqi, Noor Ahmad, Najibullah Zadran, Naveen-ul-Haq, Abdul Rahman, Riaz Hassan

If game was in Lucknow, Chennai, or even Kolkata, Afghans would've had a good chance.

On a flat Mumbai pitch, Aussies are overwhelming favorites.

AFG have a chance , Australia are suspectable to spin , AFG needs to control Warner and Maxwell in particular. Trott is working hard on their batting

Not flat in the evening there under lights in Mumbai, more difficult to bat compared to Chennai.

So if Afghans bat first and score 280-290 who knows.

Never thought I'd see the day where minnow Afghans are somewhat favorites in some people's eyes against the Aussies, how times have changed.
They have earned this status bro.

Apart from minows or what, they are eventually playing wonderful cricket these days.

They're minnows in majority of the circumstances, test matches, ODI's anywhere outside South Asia, playing India at any time, etc.

Have to play 4 spinners in both games . No matter what the conditions .

As much as I want Afghanistan to win this game, I am afraid this is a bridge too far for them.

I just hope they put up as much a fight as possible and doesn’t surrender meekly to mighty Aussies.

Since it is Mumbai with hot weather predictions, team winning the toss would want to bat first.

If it's a pancake of a wicket and Australia is batting first. I expect 400+ score.

Aaron Finch: Zampa ‘probably the premier white ball spinner in the world’

Australia have found what they were missing earlier on in the tournament – their energy.

In the first two games, they looked like a flat cricket team in all three facets of the game. The last five games, in particular, there has been a lot more energy in the field and to me that's always a sign that a team is really up to the contest.

Energy plays a huge role in the success of a team and that is what has contributed to the success of Australia’s next opponents, Afghanistan.

They are a very good cricket team and what they have brought with their energy is second to none. They are obviously a highly skilled team. They still perhaps rely on their spinners quite a bit but the thing that I've loved is that they have been consistent with their batting.

The one question mark for me was if they had to chase runs. In the past, it would tend to be a bit shaky at times and they could falter but at this World Cup, they have been flawless in chases.

Australia’s win over England on Saturday was a really good game and they will have been happy to get over the line with their top order not firing.

England have had the wood over Australia over the last couple of years but we are beginning to see a bit of a change there and I was interested by Joe Root’s comment that England are still a better team man-for-man, given how the tournament has played out.

England have got some great players who in a couple of years will go down in history amongst the best ever in the format. Jos Buttler is a brilliant player in both white ball formats and man-for-man I think they match up against most teams, but they just haven't got it right at this World Cup.

I don’t think Australia will really care that they have knocked England out, that’s more one for the fans than anything else.

Australia came here with the aim of winning the World Cup and it’s not about which teams you beat, it is about making the semi-final as the first real tick. Australia will just be satisfied to be one step closer.

Adam Zampa was outstanding again for Australia. I wrote in my last column about how impressive he has been and what stands out for me is how well he is reading the batters.

With spin, half the battle is knowing when to bowl your variations based on reading the batters and the conditions. He is bowling so beautifully at the moment and he has taken so many crucial wickets.

There will be a lot of work that goes into reading batters, from the backroom staff and the senior players, but the preparation that he puts in himself is right up there as well.

At times, you can get caught when you play against teams or individuals so much that you just sort of go through the motions of preparation at times because you get comfortable but Zamps dots his I's and crosses his T's each and every game.

That has shone through in his unbelievable consistency, taking at least three wickets in five consecutive games. He has been probably the premier white-ball spinner for a couple of years across the two white-ball formats around the world, so this is really good recognition of the skill of his craft.

Against Afghanistan, however, I think it will be the pace bowlers who will have more of a say. They are playing at the Wankhede, which probably plays into Australia's hands.

It is a really good cricket wicket; it helps pace a little bit more than it does spin. It bounces traditionally which can make it very good for batting once you get in, but it can be a difficult place to start your innings.

As Australia prepare for the game, they will inevitably think about what is riding on the game and know a win will guarantee qualification for the knockout stages.

But once you turn up to the game you tend not to think of the ramifications of your performance too much, and instead be a lot more focused on the opposition.

If Australia qualify for the semi-finals against Afghanistan, they will likely face South Africa, and I think they have what it takes to beat them.

The Proteas’ loss against India will have given a lot of teams confidence that if they get it right, they can be all over South Africa.

Australia quick bowlers are a key on batting pitches. Afghanistan batter will find very hard to score runs against them.

If Afghanistan somehow managed to topple Australia here, this would not be an upset for me. Afghanistan has played excellent cricket in this World Cup. This win will also send tremors in Pakistan's and New Zealand's camps.

Good Afghanistan batting first . 4 spinners. Navin ahead of fazal today

Afghanistan won the toss and chose to bat first

TEAMS:
Afghanistan (Playing XI):
Rahmanullah Gurbaz, Ibrahim Zadran, Rahmat Shah, Hashmatullah Shahidi(c), Azmatullah Omarzai, Mohammad Nabi, Ikram Alikhil(w), Rashid Khan, Mujeeb Ur Rahman, Noor Ahmad, Naveen-ul-Haq

Australia (Playing XI): Travis Head, David Warner, Mitchell Marsh, Marnus Labuschagne, Josh Inglis(w), Glenn Maxwell, Marcus Stoinis, Pat Cummins(c), Mitchell Starc, Adam Zampa, Josh Hazlewood

I know AFG beating Australia today won’t be good for Pakistan’s chances of making semis but I honestly believe AFG has a decent chance. Fully supporting them today.

I don't think Afghanistan can score 200 against Starc, Cummins,Hazelwood and Zampa . Easy win for Australia

Afghanistan is trying to make a rivalry out of nothing with Australia. These chinnu minnu players are flying on a moon. Time to bring them again to earth. Come on Aussies.

After 5 overs, Afghanistan is 27/0. Good start against the Aussies.

I am quite surprised by the Afghans quick singles. They learnt basics and implementing then flawlessly. I am puzzled why does pak never learn or bothers to learn even though both are close neighbours and other similar factors.

Hazlewood has got his man. Gurbaz is gone. Afghanistan is 1 down now for 38 after 8 overs.

Rahmat Shah has faced 3rd most balls at the number 3 slot since the 2019 world cup. He is surely the one who can grind the opposition.

Some shot by Zadran, Afghhan have got more 360 players than Pak.

Afghanistan have taken West Indies’ place as a full member nation for good, performance wise. Easily better than SL, BD and on par with Pakistan as sad as it is to say for me as a Pak fan in this tournament.

Can’t call them a minnow anymore. If Pakistan doesn’t make it to semis, would like to see Afghani jalebi to make it.

Apparently the average first innings score here for the last 2 years is 380+? I guess we’re in for a massive first innings score followed by Travis Head and Warner going ballistic to try to chase it down.

Mate, we just whitewashed them in a 3 match ODI series. They are good and I am glad that cricket is growing but they are nowhere near Pakistan. Need a lot more consistency than that.

They were white-washed by an average Pakistan team two months ago. They couldn't qualify for the second round of the Asia cup, over two really poor teams in Bangladesh and Sri Lanka. Some perspective please.

Afghanistan is playing way too slow here, they’re gonna need 350+ for a flat pitch like this unless Australia just straight up chokes to spin

Rahmat shah was trying to up the scoring rate. but he failed in the process.

Afghanistan's run rate is only 4.72 and they have 8 wickets in hands

Though AFG have done brilliantly so far as per their ability they are way below achieving the par score. They need atleast 330 to defend on this highway. These too are taking too much time and both are not power hitters. Its better if one of them gets out and Nabi can come in and play a blinder for AFG to have any chance of making a respectable score.

33 overs, 157/2 and a run-rate of just 4.76. Really need to put their foot on paddle now.

Isn't this guy Ibrahim also a statpadder?
Yes, he even bats at a s/r of 80-90 in t20s. Shahidi is also a test player. Their partnership is going at 4.32 per over. In the next 100 balls they need to score atleast 180 runs for a par score.

Haha. What a performance by AFG so far. Totally unexpected.

AFG is going to win this.
There is no way this Aus team is chasing 270+ against the top spinning lineup of AFG.

Are they going to spoil the party for us and make the semis?

50 Partnership. Ibrahim Zadran and skipper Hashmatullah Shahidi bring up their fifty run-stand against the Aussies as they fight for a spot in the top-4.

Score: AFG 173/2 in 37 Overs (Zadran 86, Hashmat 26)

The pressure becomes too much and Starc rips the thew yorker in!

AFG 173/3 (37.2 overs)

LOL at you thinking AFG will get 270+ to begin with.

Afghans lack power tbh. All pretty slender as well.

Batting slow but they are doing as well as expected given their limitations.

Whoever said Afghans have natural power should probably think again.

Yeah there was a post or two I came across bragging about current Afghan/Pathans teams natural strength after their last few wins and comparison with "weak" Pathans in Pakistan, clinical stuff.
