I don't remember watching someone exploiting the home conditions as well as Shami has done. He has been impeccable. That channel and the seam position he has is something to be printed on Cricket's "How to Bowl" books.

Agree, Australia because of historical reasons, they are the GOAT team and mental giants.

Pak because if they make the SF, it will be on the back of an incredible momentum of 3 consecutive wins when all hope was lost. And yeah Fakhar, one guy who has the right mindset to counterattack this quality of bowling.

It was decided before tournament that Pak will play their semifinal at Eden Gardens only, and not travel to Mumbai. This was PCB's request by the way.
 
Unfortunately, could not watch our bowling today as I had to catch some sleep. But super happy with the results.

This is what I expected from our attack and that is exactly what they have given us fans.

Super happy to be living in an era when an Indian team boasts such phenomenal bowing attack and an amazing captain in Rohit.

Regardless who we are going to face in Wankhade, I am quietly confident of clearing that hurdle as well.

I was expecting SA to beat India today. India is bound to have a bad game soon. No team can dominate this way for too long. I just hope they continue this for another 4 games.
 
Virat Kohli slammed a record 49th ton on his 35th birthday, even as his compatriots showed fine form against South Africa in the ICC Men's Cricket World Cup 2023.

An attacking start from Rohit Sharma and Shubman Gill was supplemented by a brilliant ton from Virat Kohli and an attacking fifty from Shreyas Iyer. Courtesy of some late blows from Suryakumar Yadav and Ravindra Jadeja, India finished over 300.

South Africa showed good fight in the field, plugging the flow of runs in the middle overs, but India were helped by a bright start and a strong finish.

This was Kohli's 49th ODI century, making him the joint-highest century-maker in ODIs.

India bowlers struck immediately with the new ball, accounting for South Africa's top-order in the first Powerplay.

Ravindra Jadeja (5/33) took centre stage thereafter, picking regular wickets to derail the Proteas' effort.

Match 37: India won by 243 runs against South Africa

Mohammed Siraj struck for India early on, when he got Quinton de Kock to play on in the very second over. The batter had just completed 1000 runs in Cricket World Cup, off the previous ball.

India pacers further upped the pressure by stringing together a series of dot balls. Understanding the amount of turn available in the wicket, Rohit Sharma employed Ravindra Jadeja in the Powerplay. The move brought immediate dividends, as Jadeja cleaned the stumps of Temba Bavuma.

And Mohammed Shami finished the Powerplay with yet another wicket, getting Aiden Markram (9) to nick one behind the wicket.

Disciplined bowling ensured that India struck at regular intervals. Jadeja and Shami benefitted from sharp reviews that were taken on their behalf by Rohit.

When Jadeja cleaned up David Miller for 11, the South Africa chase was all but over. They were eventually bowled out in the 28th over.

In the first innings, India batters were among the boundaries from the very first over, hitting eight fours in the first four overs. Rohit hit five of these boundaries.

He added another four and two beautiful sixes in the very next over, off Lungi Ngidi to lift India even further.

However, the skipper's aggressive takedown of the South Africa bowling lineup was eventually brought to an end in the sixth over. Rohit tried to take on Kagiso Rabada but was brilliantly caught by his opposite number, Temba Bavuma.

However, the run flow didn't stop as Virat Kohli, celebrating his 35th birthday, came to the crease and continued going for his shots.

It took Keshav Maharaj's excellence to dismiss Shubman Gill. He delivered a beauty which made Gill go towards the on-side and then beat his bat to trim the off-stump.

As the South African spinners started making better use of the wicket, the scoring opportunities for the Indian batters reduced. From Gill's wicket up until the 25-over mark, Kohli and Iyer scored only three more boundaries.

Shackles were broken in the 28th over when Iyer hit Tabraiz Shamsi for a towering six. A set of boundaries flew from his bat as India upped their rate to over six an over.

Kohli too picked pace, and India looked set for a total in excess of 300. However, Iyer's dismissal in the 37th over slowed down India's scoring rate.

The teams were tangled in a closely fought battle in the death overs, even as India tried to lift the scoring rate at the back of some attacking stroke-play from Suryakumar Yadav (22 from 13), while South Africa tried to pull things back with some tidy work in the field.

Big blows from Ravindra Jadeja helped India to 326/5, even as Kohli finished at 101*.

Rohit Sharma won the toss and opted to bat first in Kolkata. Temba Bavuma too wanted to bat first. There was only one change in the South Africa setup, with Tabraiz Shamsi coming in for Gerald Coetzee.

India are the only undefeated side in the tournament thus far but will be wary of Temba Bavuma's men, who have gone from strength to strength since their upset against the Netherlands in Dharamsala.

While the Men in Blue have been rocked by the loss of all-rounder Hardik Pandya, Mohammed Shami's form has been a big boost for them. The pacer has picked 14 wickets at a mind-boggling average of 6.71, especially bamboozling the batters under the lights.

South Africa's only concern, thus far, has been their form while chasing. In their two instances of batting second, they've lost a low-scoring encounter to the Dutch, while in the second game, they emerged victorious against Pakistan in Chennai by a wicket in hand.

See jansen couldn't hit past 30 m apart from one fluke 4. He became like chahal in this game.

Sometimes it hard to believe that you are Pakistani. Most of the members here are Pro-Pakistan team and anti-India. But you seem the exact opposite which is Pro-Indian team and anti-Pakistani team.

I think unless they win the WC it cannot be better than the teams of 1983, 1992, 1996 and 2011. GOAT teams also need to produce results. So this team has to win this and also the 2025 CT like Dhoni's team did in 2011 and 2013.

India bowled exceptionally well in 2015 bar one game. In 2019 too bar one game. They were deasly. Bowlinf that is. But batsmen let them down in 2019 and 2021. Also in 2014 batsmen let them down.

Collectively both batsmen and bowling have been at their best only in this one I agree. Before it was mostly bowling and occasionally batting.

That’s not the only reason they are skilled. They aren’t playing Ranji games, they practice in the nets and play on the same pitches as all other IPL players. If there is anyone for whom these conditions are not as familiar as the Indian bowlers then it is their Pakistani counterparts.

Yea choke was when for example India in 2019 where they were unfortunate to play on a day 2 pitch. Close tight game and they let it slip.

Or choke would be us losing the plot vs india in 2011 semis in a somewhat winnable game.

I didn't want to post this earlier because India still have a World Cup to win, but in terms of complete sides they are up there with Australia of 2003-2007.

This dominance has nothing to do with home conditions. They'd top the log in any continent. That bowling attack will dominate any conditions. Ridiculous side

I don’t recall anytime during the Pakistani innings in the 2011 game where Pakistan appeared to be in a commanding situation. Certainly not during their batting, maybe, ephemeral when wahab struck twice in quick succession.

Maybe bad example. Say nz vs SA 2011. That was a choke lol. Saffers oh saffers.

I mean we dropped some dollies and somewhat had a chance to win if we accelerated better but India bowled well

In every bowling unit there was always one weak link or the other. Not all 5 bowlers were good at the same time. Australian tracks are not exactly conducive to spin as much as asian tracks.

Obviously, things went wrong out there, but why did they go wrong?

[Rob Walter:]

Good question and an understatement altogether. To be fair, just a day that we were out-skilled really. I didn't feel that was a 320 pitch. They obviously got off to a flyer and we pulled it back nicely. I thought Keshav bowled beautifully today along with KG. And yeah, 320 was too much on that deck and then from a bowling point of view they put us under pressure right from the word go. Couldn't claw our way back in, and as I said, just got out-skilled on the day.

[Reporter:]

I just wondered about the nerves that appeared to be on display at the start of the match. There was a lot of talk from three or four of the players before the game about it just being another game of cricket, which evidently it wasn't going to be. Playing India in a World Cup game at Eden Gardens in front of 70,000. And I just wondered whether that was a deliberate thing to try and treat it like a normal game of cricket rather than sort of impress the fact that it obviously wouldn't be.

[Rob Walter:]

To be dead honest, I mean, in the lead up to the game as well as just before the game I didn't have a sense of the guys being overawed or nervous by the situation - I mean the whole thing we spoke about this week was actually being excited by the occasion. It's not very often you get to play the full Eden Gardens against India in a World Cup. So, from that point of view, it was exciting for me more than anything else. And I genuinely felt that the players were excited by the occasion.

I mean, I can't speak for them individually, but I didn't get a sense of a huge amount of nerves prior to the game. That said, our execution probably let us down more than anything else and put us on the back foot.

[Reporter:]

If you were to meet this Indian team again, I know there's still a lot that needs to happen for that, from today's game, do you have a sense that there are areas that you can target them or do they feel a bit unbeatable at the moment?

[Rob Walter:]

I mean, they're a hell of a team. And very well balanced and highly skilled. There's no way around it. They've won every game and they've won it well.

You have to believe that on a day if you execute your skills, you've also got a chance and we just didn't right from the word go. We know already what Marco Jansen can do with a new ball, today was an off day, the guy's a young guy playing in a World Cup, he's played seven excellent games to point and didn't have a great start today and could just as easily bowl very well the next time we find ourselves against him if we're able to.

So yeah, this game is a funny game and you get taught new lessons every single day and get surprised every single day. So, it wouldn't surprise me if the tables turned the next time around. The beauty of it is that there may well be another shot for us and we've been given an opportunity to learn from that.

[Reporter:]

Is there any room to say that maybe things aren't so bad because you didn't beat yourselves as South African teams have done in the past, that you were completely clapped by a vastly superior team, or is that just mission statement talk?

[Rob Walter:]

No, I mean, the scoreboard will tell you everything you need to know. India were far superior than we were today. There's no two ways about that. Just like we've played in this tournament, we've been far superior than other teams that on a piece of paper look evenly matched or potentially superior. Once you get your nose in front in international cricket, I believe that anyone can beat anyone. And today, the Indian side got their nose in front, highly skilled team, and we weren't able to get back into the game.

[Reporter:]

Just on Marco, you spoke about him being young and he's had such a good game so far, before today. How will you handle him after this now? This was a really tough lesson for him and he came apart a little bit.

[Rob Walter:]

To be honest, it's a gift, isn't it? Being able to run out in front of 75,000 in a game like today and so many learning opportunities out there. Fortunately for us you know today wasn't a must-win fixture. It was just an opportunity to play against a really good team and yeah, he struggled today but as I said he's got the skill set to bounce back and be effective the next time around and what he does have now is the value of having already run out, competed, felt what it's like to be in a cauldron with 70,000 people cheering against you. And you'll have that as experience that's invaluable. You can't get that anywhere else but here.

[Reporter:]

You mentioned that it probably, as it turned out, wasn't necessarily your guys' fault, it's just how the results panned out. This game sort of turned into more of an exhibition where you could showcase your skills instead of being a must-win. But do you think that perhaps it did weigh on the guys' minds, the fact that the semi-final is secured now and two-pronged?

Do you believe now that four days in between the Afghan game might actually be a good thing after the lessons that were learned here?

[Rob Walter:]

I think if you walk into that changing room now, you're going to find a group of guys highly disappointed that we weren't able to pay tribute to what was an awesome occasion, like a great opportunity for us to showcase our skill. We played so well throughout this entire World Cup and we would have wanted nothing more than this to be a great contest.

As far as the next four days go, for us it's really about doing what we've done the whole time, using the time we've got available to us to get ready for the next fixture, and then into a semi-final. So, nothing changes there.

The guys have worked incredibly hard to this point. We worked incredibly hard on our game, invested a huge amount of time into our preparation and so now it's really about just mentally recovering, physically recovering and being ready to compete and compete like we have the whole tournament.

[Reporter:]

Do you think that the pitch is the key factor that the batting strength of South Africa succumbed to the spin attack of Indian squad?

[Rob Walter:]

I think it would be very short-sighted and unfair of me to blame the pitch. One side gets 320, and we get bowled out for 80. That doesn't sound right, does it?

So, to be fair, as I said, 320 was too much on that pitch. I think we'll all reflect on that and say that that was probably 70 or 80 too many. But on the other side, I think India were excellent. And I wouldn't blame the pitch on that part.

[Reporter:]

I know there's been questions about nerves. I'm sure between in the innings break you might have had and to the innings you might have had a chat with your bowlers. Was it actually nerves or did they come across something they didn't expect because they have been starting really quickly? What was it in those first 10 overs? Because after that, you actually pulled them back pretty well.

[Rob Walter:]

Look, I think the one thing that was different today certainly is we've been able to swing the ball, the new ball, and most of the time we've been doing it at night. So, we were bowling first, so it wasn't as much swing as we've been used to, but along with that our execution was off, and with that if you've got a guy like Rohit Sharma who's on the other end, if you miss your areas, you're going to fetch. And we did, so 91 after 10, you're behind the 8 ball already. And then you're busy clawing back from there, which we did, I thought we did exceptionally well. As I said, Keshav was outstanding today and KG as well. So yeah, I mean, I don't want to look too far or too more deeply into it than that.

We had asked Rohit Sharma about which players are doing well. He took your name, he said that Jadeja is under the radar. He is doing very well. He is underappreciated. Did you hear that? That people are not talking about me today I will show them with my ball and bat.

[Ravindra Jadeja:]

No, I don't know honestly, but it's good that I am contributing well in the past 3-4 matches, in batting and bowling. I feel happy that in an important tournament, in important matches I am delivering with the bat and ball. It feels good. Important games are coming up - I am more confident about my individual performance.

[Reporter:]

Can we expect that after the Australia and West Indies, if there is an unbeaten champion, it will be India in this World Cup.

[Ravindra Jadeja:]

We don't think much about what will happen in a match, we plan match by match. The upcoming knockout stage will be very important. The way the teams momentum is right now, with batting, bowling, in every department, we are clicking as a team. So, we will continue and try to make it the same in the semifinal and final.

[Reporter:]

If you could tell us about the pitch. The South African coach said that the wicket was not one where you could score 320. You’ll scored a lot that way.

How did the wicket behave in the first half? In the second half, when you bowled and took the punches, tell us about the wicket.

[Ravindra Jadeja:]

I think when they were bowling, it was more healthy. I think the turn was more and the bounce of the wicket was less. But now, if you ask me personally, the wicket in the afternoon and now - now it was a little easier. I won't say easy, but it was fine. But in the afternoon, there was turn and it was slow, so batsmen can't hit. But credit to Virat and the middle order batsmen who handled their spinners, it was very good.

We have an idea that whenever we come to Kolkata, the bounce is less and the spin is also there. So maybe that was an advantage that we knew that there will be spin and the wicket will be played slowly. Mentally we were prepared with this.

[Reporter:]

In the last 2-3 matches, we are seeing that from the new ball, they are taking wickets with the new ball. As a spinner, when you come after that, how easy is it for you and Kuldeep? Tell us a little bit about this.

[Ravindra Jadeja:]

See, always, in any format that you are playing, when your fast bowler takes 2-3 wickets from the top, it becomes easier for the spinner. Because a batsman who comes on slow wickets cannot play big shots straight away. He needs time. And the spinner can bowl with more confidence. He can bowl with speed and variation.

I think it's good that all three fast bowlers are giving us 2-3 wickets in every match. Sometimes more than that. It's good.

Hopefully in the upcoming knockout stage if our team performs like this it will be very good

[Reporter:]

In the tournament, you won the last match with 300 runs, now again one sided. All 8 matches that India have won have been almost always one sided. This was thought to be the toughest match, but it was not proved.

So, don't you think that before going for a knockout, one more tough test was necessary for India?

And second, were you extra motivated for the birthday on the field?

[Ravindra Jadeja:]

No, no. Playing for India and birthday is not related. Whenever we play for India in the jersey it is always a birthday. Very few people get a chance to wear Indian jersey so it is a big thing but if you do a good performance on your birthday and the team wins then it becomes double special and like you asked why no tough match was made - so it is good that there should not be any tough match, if the opponent team comes to play, they should feel that they are under more pressure and panic.

Their preparation is that they will go to play in front of India, their team is performing very well in batting, bowling, fielding. So, this should happen. And I will say that the stage that will come now is more important. So, if we are winning one side matches, then there will be more pressure on the other team.

[Reporter:]

Continuing the same question. Virat's 49th century, Sachin Tendulkar's record of ODI 100, he has equalised, everywhere it was talk of the town, talk of the nation, somewhere Indian team will also know about it, how will you’ll celebrate, is there any special arrangement, will they plan anything?

[Ravindra Jadeja:]

No, there is nothing like that. But whatever it is, 49 - 50, whatever it is, this joy is falling in the same plate. So, it's good. It's not going anywhere else. So let it be. What else?

The good news is that it is an important tournament and important games and it is happening in India. So whatever record is broken, runs are made, wickets are taken, it is good for us, so let it be, don't cast an evil eye on anyone.

[Reporter:]

Thinking in place of a captain - if you have a player like you who is bowling 10 overs in every match, 50 runs in every match, batting, and fielding. So how happy would you be?

[Ravindra Jadeja:]

I would be very happy. And you said I should think like a captain – I have been thinking like the captain since the first match, it’s just that I've never become one.

As an all-rounder – it is our role that if in a tough situation, they have to make 30, 35, 40 runs, and when the partnership is in place, they can change the game by taking one or two wickets. That's their role.

I always try to give an impactful performance in batting or bowling. When the team needs me, in any department. And I never take fielding for granted. I also feel that I can miss a catch. So, I am always more prepared, that if I get a catch, I don't relax on the field.

So, I just keep trying. Sometimes I do, sometimes I don't. But I keep trying.

[Reporter:]

When you won the toss, it must have been very easy to bat first, seeing their record.

And second, did you have any idea that the wicket would be a little slow for spinners?

[Ravindra Jadeja:]

No, after winning toss, we were trying to challenge ourselves. Because if we had bowled in the afternoon, we might not have scored so many runs.

As I said, the ball was stopping a lot, and there was no bounce. And the turn was increasing. It was continuously turning.

So, it was a challenge for us to take first batting and in the second innings if the dew comes, how can we bowl with the dew? Because if such a situation comes in the knockout stage, we should know how to handle that situation. That was the only reason.

[Reporter:]

You have played with Virat's maximum during these 49 hundreds. You have seen him from the sidelines. So, looking at this pitch, how do you assess this 100? Where do you keep this 100 as a player?

[Ravindra Jadeja:]

I would say this is special for him as well as tough because the way the wicket was in the afternoon, at one time it felt like 260-270 is also fine and at that time, rotating the strike and taking boundaries I think that must have been very challenging.

So, specially I would say that when the team was not getting a run, both their spinners were bowling well, and at such a time to rotate the strike, to take boundaries, and to get a score of above 300 and be not out - that is a very big achievement and a very big effort for him.

[Reporter:]

So far you have been unbeaten in the tournament, but before the tournament started, which team were you considering more tough or more competitive in terms of your planning or preparation, team wise, who do you think will face the biggest challenge from this team or from these teams?

[Ravindra Jadeja:]

See, in white ball cricket, sometimes due to the factor of dew, the situation becomes completely different. If we would have bowled in the afternoon and if dew would have come at night, then the ball would not have spinned maybe - as the ball was moving so much in the afternoon.

So sometimes in white ball, the main reason for dew is that any normal team also looks big and if there is no dew then everything can go in our favour, no team looks big, it looks like we will defeat them easily.

So, all that factors a lot and in which situation you make your game plan, that also matters.

I am not sure but it seems there is some clause in WC that allows host nation to choose the semi finals venue.

Kolkata being a better bowling surface making India choosing it over Mumbai if there is a chance, I believe.

This might be Shami's last WC, what a world cup for him. He giving it all.

I don't see any team defeating India unless India underperforms or its gets a lot easier batting second(opposition team chasing total) . A bit like Sri Lanka in 1996 final where there was massive dew in Lahore. Dew hasn't played much of a role in this tournament.
 
Things are going to perfectly for India. At some point the law of averages will catch up and they will have a really bad day at the office.

Sorry but this law of averages is just media trope. If you are good you are good. If you are bad then you are bad. Aus won 7 on the trot in 99, then undefeated 22 games in 03 and 07 to win. Total 29 undefeated games for 3 WC wins. Simple. WC ko games are all about nerves and pressure.

If you play as a team and continue playing as a team that factor can be negated. Several players have to have a no show. If soem team can do that so be it. So far they have made their fans proud.

Jadeja - 14 wickets + 111 runs
Shami - 16 wickets
Bumrah - 15 wickets

They will rest some of the bowlers I reckon, batters nope, they all need as much game time as possible. Maybe shuffle the order, promote Rahul to open, Shreyas one down etc...

But I don't think they are due a bad game...playing at home, no rain on horizon, familiar pitches etc etc...

More a matter of keeping the nerve and after the heartbreaks of last 10 years 15,17,19, the teams ready now
 
BTW for all the online amateur pundits who think they are the real deal...a certain Fraudeja took a 5er against the most dangerous batting line up...such that haters....

The conditions were ideal. But his bowling was dead accurate.

I think the hate against Sir Jadeja is motivated by the expectation that he a late order, hard hitting batsman who is not known for the hard hits. or atleast he does not hit them as hard as often and as reliably as some would desire.

There have been countless games where the follies of the top order result in challenging or near impossible equations for the lower order where individuals such as jadeja, from whom much is expected, do not deliver.

That dissatisfaction translates into a strong disliking. Absolutely unwarranted if you ask me.

Why, wont that predictable? This Pakistani side is low on morale, arguably low on talent, and certainly low on execution. If they make it to the semifinal they would do so by the skin of their teeth. how would that prepare us for the final against either australia or south africa? mind you the winner of which will certainly come better prepared, better structured, and with a bit of luck could present some questions we dont have answers for!

So lets say Pakistan makes it 4th and so the Mumbai match is moved to Kolkata.

Does that mean the other match, which was meant to be in Kolkata, now gets moved to Mumbai?

Because if not, then I wonder how they are going to deal with all the fans who got tickets for the Mumbai semi-final match.

India is domination this World Cup and i doubt that they will lose if they continue to play like this. Total dominance in last 2 games. Fabulous stuff.
