ICC World Cup 2023: New Zealand (288/6) deliver a 149-run thrashing to Afghanistan (139) in Match 16

Afgh have thrown away all the advantage of bowling first here. Pitch will get better but seems too big an ask for them now

Most teams won't be chasing 288 on this pitch let alone Afghanistan. Happy to be proven wrong. But this is way way out of their reach by the look of it.

No this pitch won't get better until 20 or 25 overs are gone. You can't make up everything in the last 25 overs if you don't get a start in the first 25.

Very well played Afghans - they were just little behind in the finer parts of the game. Dropped crucial catches, allowed stolen singles, and made a blunder of not bringing muzeeb with attacking fielding just after Mitchel was out.

They took a bold decision to chase, but I think AFGs are always better team defending - they played a perfect game against Poms & that should be their play book. Bat first, Gurbaz attacks and get ahead of the game, then late middle order takes the target to a decent target, spinners take over from there on.

What’s gone is gone - 288 isn’t easy target, but they reached 291 in 37 overs against SRL, without much contribution from Gurbaz - it’s possible, Good luck.

Afg let NZ score 50 runs too many. They could have chased a 230-240 total. But 280 looks very difficult. Gurbaz needs to give them a really good start.

Don't think its happening for Afghans tonight.

Happy to be proven wrong.

140.2 kph Boult. This is the thing. You don't have to bowl every ball at that speed. Just bowl when you want to. That ability is more important.

NZ 40 runs short
On the contrary, I feel NZ quickly reassessed the par score and changed their batting approach accordingly and seem to have got a fighting score on the board. If they has still tried the get to 320 approach they have ended up 240.

Two down .what was Afghanistan thinking when there were chose to bowl first .

Good luck facing Boult & Henry under lights. Chennai pitch may look slow. But under lights it just zips off for atleast 10 overs. Hazlewood and Starc were good too.

Lol Afghanistan. Why on earth would you choose to bowl first?

It was very very dumb decision from Afghanistan think tank.

Too much of playing at Delhi has corrupted their thought process. They just finished winning a match defending the total.

All over for afg. 2 wickets down. Time to minimize the nrr damage I guess. Take it deep and lose by a respectable 45 runs ms dhoni style!🙂

Inexplicable decision to field first by Afghanistan. Clearly, they are better are defending targets. Their batting is their weaker point so why condemn the batting to a pressure run chase.

Senseless. Anyone can tell them strength is too defend with spin

Didn't they watch INdia vs Australia match where Hazlewood was seaming and swinging, Starc swinging. It is very hard to survive first 10 overs even if there is a case for dew. You have to survive till 25 th over for dew.

They win against England by restricting England in the chase.

Netherlands win by restricting South Africa in their chase.

It's the winning formula so why change it?

The way NZ mowed down 290 against England made everyone reluctant to let them chase

NZ is way more strategical in everything they do. Bowlers bowl to field with impeccable precision. That is why it is hard for minnows to upset them.

NZ clearly have shown they're a cut above rest, exceptional batting with dogged resistance and then the unleash and now pinpoint pacer with a miser spin bowler

They showed a stat on perecntage of short ball from various bowlers. Mark wood staggering 79% !! He did on the wrong surface. Ferguson 71%. Taskin and Shoriful are also on the list.

This is the kind of stuff elevates the quality of world cup. Not what we saw with Australia/Afghanistan.

Nah this was far superior
But this is not coming at speed. That one was hit flat and fast travelling by Rashid Khan. This one he just had to time his jump. Root had to run hard to latch on to it. Here he hardly had to run. He just had to leap.

Very very disappointing world cup so far. Most of the matches(almost every match)are one sided. It's disappointing to say the least.
