ICC World Cup 2023: New Zealand (288/6) deliver a 149-run thrashing to Afghanistan (139) in Match 16

As the WC progresses score will be reduced to 280ish etc Broadcasters knew where there money is

50 up for Afghanistan after 16 overs
In a spot of bother after losing 3 wickets
Required RR is about 7 now

They win against England by restricting England in the chase.

Netherlands win by restricting South Africa in their chase.

It's the winning formula so why change it?
Yeah why would they change that winning formula especially on this Chennai wicket. Especially when they have batsmen who have strike rates in 60s and 70s. Afghanistan should always bat first irrespective of conditions.

Very stupid decision by Afghanistan management.

Very very disappointing world cup so far. Most of the matches(almost every match)are one sided. It's disappointing to say the least.

Sometimes two bad teams are needed for thrillers or two good teams are needed. IN almost all the matches one team completely went missing. Basically they are struggling to come to terms with variety of pitches, conditions. For a world cup in India you have to come with all your bases covered. If not come with strategy. NZ has some holes in their line up. But they are able to mask their weakness much better than others.

This will be z good lesson for afg though. Don't think they will ever chase again this WC if they win the toss 😂

I don't midn them taking it deep. But how can you have 67 dot balls in 17 overs. Where are the singles, twos

Add 20 runs to pressure while chasing. No team will entertain chasing going forward unless they are confident of rolling the opposition under 200

Some of the pitches have been disappointing like Delhi ones where South Africa scored 428 but most of these pitches have been supportive for bowlers as well as batsmen.

There has not been much disparity between bat and ball which is good to see.

Hopefully we see more of these 250-300 scores.

New Zealand make the least number of unforced errors among all teams, in all departments including selection, field setting, tactics. Very very smart and efficient unit, there's a reason upsets against them are so rare.
Yes, by my knowledge they have never choked to a minnow in any of the icc tournaments; world cup, t20 world or champions trophy. The only exception being their defeat to BD in 17 ct. But I am not sure if you can call that an upset. BD had already whitewashed them twice in previous six years, so it was hardly a shocker. I think they never let their guard off even against minnows, never take casual approach. That's the reason why upsets are very difficult against them.

Afghans are going through the Indian syndrome of 90s - if Tendulkar goes out cheaply, shoulder down for players & gallery starts to become silent, eventually empty. The moment Gurbaz gets out, Afghans go into a shell…

Pitches will assist less and less to batsmen. This was predicted right at the start as the pitch at Delhi was relaid pitch.

Dew is probably coming down. Also part timers are in action. If only they had preserved the wicket and taken singles they would be like 115/1 or something. They would still be in the game

After all they are minnows so they don't access the condition .now dew came or not is doesn't matter as Afghanistan already lost the match

Boult back again. NZ is not a side that won't give them even a sniff like SA did other day after having them at 112/6

Afghanistan have the ability to win periods of the game.

But across 100 overs the big teams should have enough wits about them to come through.

Pakistan just need to make sure they do not underestimate them and they’ll be fine.

Afghanistan should keep simple just bat first don’t get into pitch conditions etc . Bat first score 270-300

NZ look like an excellent side. Experienced bowlers, genuine all rounders and some good players of spin. Really look like the only side capable of beating India atm

Watch out for the kiwis . Too clinical
Nz still hasn't met the big teams yet- ind aus Pak sa sl. They have to win 3 of these or atleast 2. Not an easy passage. And they are clinical efficient like sa of the 90s - they don't have the x factor to win WCs. Will be knocked out in sf if they reach it

Mentally they can't win a final. India are unbeatable.

Another big win for NZ will he on the top and I think they are hot favorites alongside india to win it all

Whoever in the Afghan think tank decided that bowling first was a good idea needs to be sacked.

Check out Nz net run rate they are flying and still playing without southee and williamson

Another exceptionally clinical performance by NZ for NRR boost.

If the equation comes down to possibly qualifying with 5 wins, NZ will be in pole position because they are definitely crushing SL as well.

No team has maximised their resources and adapted to the conditions than NZ. Great catching , great match up planning, good reading of pitches and batting as per conditions .

This Kiwi side might have only one vulnerability - a sudden collapse in odd day. Williamson is to cover for that - today, at # 3, the way RR got out, almost changed the game, would have changed it had it been against a more experienced side. Otherwise, they should play Shodhi, but don’t know in whose place - their pacers trio are arguably the best pace combination in this WC.

India play Shami then they are better

India play Shami then they are better
Could be, but I don’t think India will play 3 out & out pacers who are 9, 10 & Jack with bat - they’ll play all-rounder Thakur; Pandeya is already there. India will rotate three pacers for two slots.

New Zealand continue winning run as Afghanistan rue missed chances

New Zealand successfully defended 288/6 to win their ICC Men's Cricket World Cup clash at MA Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai against Afghanistan.

The Black Caps appeared to be in a spot of trouble at 110/4 in the first innings after three quick wickets derailed a solid start.

But a partnership worth 144 between Glenn Phillips (71) and Tom Latham (68) helped New Zealand up to a challenging total, aided by some sloppy fielding from Afghanistan.

And in reply, New Zealand’s pace bowlers got among the wickets to limit Afghanistan’s chasing effort, with Mitchell Santner also starring both with the ball and in the field.

Afghanistan captain Hashmatullah Shahidi won the toss and elected to bowl first, and his side spilled an early chance when Will Young was dropped off the bowling of Fazalhaq Farooqi – the first missed opportunity of many. Conway was trapped lbw by Mujeeb Ur Rahman in the seventh over for 20, and Afghanistan bowled with discipline and kept the New Zealand scoring rate under check until the end of the first Powerplay.

Positive batting from Young and Rachin Ravindra helped the Black Caps pick up pace, and they added 66 runs over the next 10 overs, taking 26 runs from Mohammed Nabi's three overs in this period.

New Zealand's smooth run was rocked by a brilliant double-wicket charge from Azmatullah Omarzai. Rachin Ravindra tried to go across the line and had his middle stump uprooted off Azmatullah's second ball. And the very last ball of that over saw the other set batter, Young, fall to a brilliant diving take from the Afghanistan keeper, Iram Alikhil. An inside edge swerved toward Alikhil's left and the keeper pounced at it while staying low to complete the take.

New Zealand had barely recovered when Rashid Khan struck for the Asian side. He had Daryl Mitchell pull one to midwicket and Afghanistan were well and truly in the game.

With Afghanistan bowling beautifully and sensing the opportunity to set up their second shock result in a matter of days, Latham and Phillips settled in to build the innings' decisive partnership, taking the game into the final ten overs before unleashing a number of big shots.

The pair put on 144 in a game-turning contribution, although Afghanistan gave the two New Zealand batters a number of extra lives thanks to some particularly average efforts in the field.

Naveen-ul-Haq struck to remove both in the 48th over, but finisher Mark Chapman stepped up to smash 25 from 12 balls at the death to boost New Zealand's total up to 288/6.

Afghanistan’s reply got off to a steady start as the two openers attempted to see off the big threat of Trent Boult and Matt Henry in the Powerplay.

But just as the pair looked to be getting set, two wickets fell in the space of three balls, with Henry cleaning up the key batter Rahmanullah Gurbaz for 11, and Boult having Ibrahin Zadran caught for 14.

Knowing that there were at least ten overs of part-time bowling to come, Afghanistan were happy to rebuild and give their middle order a chance.

But the chase suffered another blow when Mitchell Santner pulled off a brilliant catch to remove the skipper Hashmatullah Shahidi for a conservative 29-ball 8. A 54-run partnership saw Afghanistan build a platform that had the potential to turn into a launchpad for their lower order hitters, but there was still a lot of work to do when Boult returned to prize out Azmatullah Omarzai for 27.

And the otherwise expensive Rachin Ravindra picked up the wicket of Rahmat Shah, via a lengthy third-umpire decision on a bump ball, to leave Afghanistan five down and with a mountain to climb.

Afghanistan needed something big from their powerful all-rounders, but Mohammad Nabi was the next wicket to fall, leaving his team 125/6.

It was Santner who got it, picking up his 100th ODI wicket in style, drifting one past the batter’s outside edge to rattle the stumps.

And it was a combination of Lockie Ferguson and Santner who wrapped the game up quickly to secure a big net run rate boost for the Black Caps, taking the last four wickets in the space of just eight deliveries as Afghanistan were bowled out for 139, still 149 runs short.

Victory puts New Zealand top of the table with four wins from four and the tournament's best net run rate, while Afghanistan will look to bounce back when they take on Pakistan next up on Monday.

Didn't watch the match but uhh, can someone explain Afghanistan's decision to bowl first. Makes little sense considering they simply cannot chase but are always in the game if they can put up a decent total and choke the game from their spinners.

Add 50 runs to total when you chase in Chennai. Players just get obsessed with this dew. Hello the dew won't fall until 25th over. If you lose 5 wickets before that what is the use of dew.

Was expecting better from the Afghans. They now have 3 big losses and 1 big win.

Poor NRR overall.
