I don’t think Afghanistan can strike gold a second time, but I sure do hope they do! I think the greatest south asian rivalries now are Afghanistan vs Pakistan and India vs Bangladesh. On paper and record one team is significantly stronger than the other and yet the lesser of the two teams always fancies their chances against the other.

In the near future I hope to see a strong Nepal vs India or Nepal vs Bangladesh rivalry.

Most likely it will be a comfortable win for Pakistan. They have played against Afghanistan plenty of matches in recent past and very well aware of their strengths and weaknesses and they have a psychological edge over them.

No way.

Afghanistan is the team where Babar and Rizwan have a chance to shine and all the meek kittens in our team come out roaring.

You can even imagine them dreaming about knocking over Hashmatullah, Gurbaz, Rahmat and Ibrahim Zadran.

Babar probably has a post match speech ready about how the team played well and everyone is good and united.

Afghanistan have a clear advantage here. No Malik, Imad, Naseem and Asif Ali to save Pakistan and also no Gulbadin Naib as Pakistan’s 12th man.

This World Cup is about to get a lot worse for Pakistan, but when things look black there’s always a silver lining.

We’ll get the team we’ve been asking for after the WC, we’ll also get a new captain and hopefully the PCB has now learnt a lesson on how to manage your pace bowlers ahead of a World Cup.

Having said that, nothing can ever be as special as my bonding with my Pakistani brothers.

With Afghans i am more emotionally attached because of our shared values of Mohobbat & respect.

But with Pakistanis i share a bond of Bharat. I never in my heart considered them separate because they were and will always be our own. Pakistan’s sovereignty we totally respect , but Pakistanis will always be considered our own by some Bharatiyas like me no matter what. It’s like the love of Jesus Christ for his followers. You may crucify me but i will always love you.

Many Bharatis fail to appreciate the value Pakistan has provided to their nation. Pakistan is like a buffer zone which protects Bharat from their ancient foe Afghanistan where land was fought over both ways. Now Bharat has no need to hate Afghans and they can concentrate their enmity on a Pakistan which will always have one hand tied behind it's back.

Afghanistan has a dead awful middle order. All you need is get rid of Gurbaz before he does too much damage and they'll struggle to get even close to a par total or chase a decent target.

Pakistan needs to underperform (like England did) to lose this.
They clearly don't. They scored 270 odd against India and 280 odd against England.

Hashmat, Azmat, Ikram is a solid middle order for them with Nabi and Rashid as lower middle order. They can have an off-day but if they don't, they have the ability to score big runs. And Pakistan's bowling attack isn't anything to write home about. Rule them out at your own peril.

Trust me, we never chose hatred for Pakistan. It was forced on us for reasons that need not be discussed here else my brother @MenInG will mind. And I would say same for Pakistan, the kids over there and you all did not chose hatred for Bharat but the situation created by politicians, army and certain sections of our people made you hate us and now we are just in a loop of never ending hatred that we are finding very hard to get out of. Hatred has consumed us and we both plate its biggest victims. I am forced to say so many things I always regret saying but such is the sad situation and the loop that I am part of.

I will always consider Pakistanis one of us.

If the story of Bharatiyas and Afghans is that of Khuda Gawah (the immortal love tale of Badshah Kham & Benazir) then the story of Bharatiyas and Pakistanis is that of Karan-Arjun. The greatest brotherly story of all time.

Pakistan and AFG will be a very closely fought game. Best scenario for Pakistan is that our pacers bully the AFG on a 220ish score and we chase it down due to dew factor. But Chennai may ne low and slow and while batting first Pakistan may crawl to a 240ish score

I'd still back Pakistan - no matter how well Afghans play, Pak seemingly believe themselves to be superior and are thus unaffected mentally by whatever Afghanistan does on the day. That doesn't mean they can't lose. Inevitably they will one day.

Compared with say India, no matter how good Pak is or isn't, there will always be a mental complex that will not allow them to excel against the padosis.

Inshallah Afghanistan will win this

Full support to Afghanistan
I know Afghanistan will get lot of support from Indian crowd. Some of Afghanistan players spending more time in India than Afghanistan and they are treated like local players in India. I feel it would be a tight match between Afghanistan and Pakistan.

That pitch is certainly gonna turn. Pakistan should bat first and score 270-280.

Most important thing for Pakistan is to drop shadab the allrounder Khan. If he is in the playing 11 then Pakistan is already playing with one man down.
Pakistan batsmen struggle against mujeeb a lot.He will create a lot of problems for them.
It should be an exciting match

I believe Pakistan are facing Australia, which happens to be a much tougher opponent than Afghanistan before this game. So why are people so hung up on this fixture? Did Afghans really scar the psyche of Pak fans that much even without ever winning an ODI against them?

Or have Pak fans already accepted defeat to the Aussies?

Afghanistan has already inflicted an upset on the Defending Champions and when it is their day, they can do that again. The main reason that I think they are not gonna beat Pakistan is their Batting line. Their bowling can do wonders but their batting is not lup to the mark. It will be a good contest but I don't see Pakistan losing to them.

Pakistan should thank BCCi 100x times that Govt of India didn't grant visa to their citizen
2 pro.

1.Pakistani fan would've crumbled seeing their team performance in Modi stadium.

2. There are a lot of Afganis in India a few are my friends , 😁 They were eagerly waiting for this clash with hockey sticks and chairs and were in full mood to welcome pakistanis in stadium ,Guess what Afganis would've beaten them black and blue. They know here police' won't take strict action against them ,Government would'vd helped them to get away with it behind the doors so all in all it's worked for pakistan

But few here poster complaining not getting visas etc ,you shouldn't.

That is actually shameful and disgusting, no surprise they are in India saying that where that third class mentality is appreciated and shared. Perhaps you should have reminded them that there are around 4 million Afghan refugees in Pakistan, where Pakistan still provides them shelter food and water, and many Afghans travel around the world through Pakistani passport. Shameful unthankful bunch how we still consider them our brothers and sisters and yet they talk like that.

BCCI/India wouldn't even let that happen as world cup will be in jeopardy if the few actually end up attacking any Pak fans there. That will absolutely tarnish India's image from carrying out remainder of world cup

What image of England got tarnished when Afghans beat Pakistan fans with chairs in 2019.
No matter where Pakistanis play, Afghans are pretty angry with them and will try to fight with them at every opportunity.

People need to stop worrying. We beat Afghanistan 3-0 in the UAE a couple of months ago and now with Saud in the middle we have all the bases covered to not just win but to give them a proper mauling in order to up our net run rate

I recall fans in UAE went to jail and several actually got booted out of the country, so props to UAE, they don't allow and tolerant such people. Don't know about England incident (not surprised as some of them can't bear each and every cricket loss against Pakistan as Pakistan allows them to get so close yet they lose :naseem so perhaps they can't bear close losses lol). Any Pakistani fan getting attacked in India is of much more weight than anywhere else.

Afghan fans need to learn to act civil. India Pakistan have much worse political stance but their fans under the same roof act civil and behave like humans, unlike a few jahil thug Afghan fans. We don't even take those games serious and neither show any animosity towards them at the stadium or outside. Just their jahalat and lack of education comes out in the open, no wonder Pakistani families with kids had a surprised face when some Afghan fans were throwing verbal abuse for nothing at them at UAE stadium.

Yep, this should be an easy win for Pakistan, nothing to worry. Australia is a tough one

Rashid Mujeeb and Nabi that's 30 over of spin, it will be 3rd or 4th game at Chennai where the square will be already roughed up, Pakistan batsman gets stuck against spin since Yousuf retired the only player capable of playing spin ruthlessly is Sarfraz who is not in squad

I think we’ll win. However it becomes tough if we are chasing 280 odd without Naseem shah’s heroics. I am however expecting us to win somewhat comfortably v aghans.

Who has the ability to boss aFG spinners from Pakistan camp Rizwan Saud Iftikhar not mentioned Babar because Rashid clearly has his number

Pak will win, but they need to be careful and not complacent. AFG can do an upset, more so than BD and SRL mostly due to Chennai pitch. But AFG also doesn't have the batting depth to consistently score 275. Chennai pitch will actually help Pak batters if they put their head down and bat defensively as the most often do on flat pitches. Chennai rewards percentage cricket. That is why NZ is doing fine and Pak has potential to do well as their top 5 are essentially test batsmen.

Going by the way Afghanistan is playing now in Chennai, I think Pakistan will defeat them easily. As Amir Sohail would put it, Pakistan will have a walk in the park!

Lol you guys are yet to face a game against mighty SENA, yet are worried about a rank mediocre side like Afghanistan.

Man to man you outclass Afghanistan at least by a 7-4 margin.

Then how come england couldnt beat them with having the strongest batting line up
Poms made a blunder of putting AFGs in - with their bowling, without scoreboard pressure, they won’t do much bowling first on batting belters. Similarly, they have explosive hitters, but apart from Root no one technically good enough to counter high quality spin (not accurate darting). Every time Poms chasing over 250, if Root goes early - they’ll struggle.

Some guy just posted this.

As I mentioned earlier in my post, my office is next to a sports company, which has partnership with ICC for world cup and so they are kinda working 24 hours these days. My friend there predicted 3 upsets last week - Afghan defeating England, Netherlands defeating SA and third one which many won't like to hear Afghan defeating Pakistan. His analysis was based upon some stats he came up with, for yday match his point was that of all associates nations, Netherlands is one team which has played a lot of ODIs and not t20s and SA will be nervous wreck because of their t20 loss.

Thoughts?

It's mostly Indian hyping up Afghanistan here.

The way Afghanistan has played yesterday, I don't think that they will be able to beat any top team now. England one was a big upset but I don't think that there will be 1 again from Afghanistan.

The only way Afgans can remotely come close to cause the upset is by batting first & posting around /over 250. That's it, no other way. If Babar wins the toss, without any hesitation he should opt to bat. Keep it simple, no need to act oversmart. Afgans shot themselves on the foot by being oversmart against Nz. This is the only probable pitch where Pak can follow their usual tuktuk template & get away. Meanwhile Babar may consider dropping one of his buddies for Mir.

India’s top 5 are also test batsmen. Aussies are also test batsmen. SA are also test Batsmen. Most of NZ top 5 are also test batsmen.

Afghans had a pretty bad day yesterday - may drive them to do better against Pakistan!

Doubt it.

But if it happens I predict it will be a combination of Pakistan panicking and Afghanistan just struggling over the line.

They should just drop Babar before this match.

Save him from embarrassment in Chennai. A loss is on the cards if he’s in the XI.

Afg has came close so many times before when we had a better team, I be very surprised if we win against them, two bad games, mentally we are down and Afg is on a high, they have already punched above their weight. With our bowling not working, Afg has very high odds of getting their second win.

Pakistan will take on Afghanistan in their fifth match of the 2023 World Cup on 23 October in Chennai.

Afghanistan lost their first two matches of the World Cup to Asian rivals Bangladesh and India, before pulling off a shock 69-run win over England in Delhi. They were defeated by New Zealand in their fourth game, but will be looking to beat the odds again when they take on Pakistan.

Pakistan's batting has been the more impressive half of their game so far in this World Cup, but they will face a more difficult challenge on a Chepauk pitch that tends to be a bit slow. If the bowlers can get their act together quickly, they should look like a more dangerous unit.

Afghanistan were very poor in the field against New Zealand, and will be looking to rectify that against Pakistan. As usual, Rashid Khan and Mujeeb Ur Rehman will be their wicket-taking options and if they have a good day, they have a very good chance of upsetting the odds.

On paper, Pakistan should get the win but Afghanistan will not simply roll over.

Afghan Lions will roar! 🦁

Pakistan is going down in Chennai. That spin attack of Mujeeb, Rashid & Nabi is too much to handle for Babar, Iftikhar, Shafique, Saud, etc.

Get the pitchforks ready.

Make sure someone in Playing XI wears mask of Naseem Shah on the field

The gamechanger in those Afghan contests. Will be interesting to see what happen without his heroics. If we have to chase 280+ vs afghans, then they are favs. I’d be comfortable chasing around 250-260.

Pakistan need to bat first , forget about dew.

Our only chance is to get them out cheaply, if they put on 250 we are in danger. If we bat first we need to put at least 275 on board and make early in-roads, unless it's curtains and I am leaning towards it being curtains for us.

If it's a big spin wicket then play Shadab for Hasan or Haris. Also someone needs to get someone in squad injured to pave way for Abrar to be selected in this team.

Must win & by a very big margin for Pakistan. Afghanistan is only in the World Cup to beat Pakistan, and they have challenged Pakistan consistently. With drop dead confidence, Pakistan might be prime candidate for some afghani drubbing.

I will improvise and go for this line.

  1. Imam
  2. Shafique
  3. Babar
  4. Fakhr zaman
  5. Rizwan
  6. Saud
  7. Ifty
  8. Shadab
  9. Hassan
  10. Shaheen
  11. Rauf

At the start of the tournament I would have said 90% in favour of Pakistan, but the way this tournament has gone, I would say 60% in favour of Pakistan.

Not only does Pak need to win Monday, it also needs to be a big margin. NRR will come into play for them for sure, and Afg and Bangla are the only 2 teams they can improve their NRR upon.

Afghanistan batting is hit and miss. If they bat first and put 260-270 then Pakistan may find it hard.

It can also happen that Afghanistan and Bangladesh will improve their NRR against Pakistan :ROFLMAO:

Not sure if Afg's known for it's lions... Wolves and Jackals maybe, but not lions....

1. Abdullah Shafique
2. Imam Ul Haq
3. Babar Azam
4. Mohammad Rizwan
5. Saud Shakeel
6. Fakhar Zaman
7. Iftikhar Ahmed
8. Usama Mir
9. Hasan Ali
10. Shaheen Shah Afridi
11. Haris Rauf

Iftikhar and Saud Shakeel as the 5th bowlers.

Naseem Shah who saved pakistan a couple of times against AFG is not there now. So AFG may actually fancyu their chance this time. Off late they are stumbling at the finish line against PAK. So this may be their best chance especially on a pitch thatmay suit their bowling.

9. Hasan Ali

It's a good lineup.

I would be tempted to switch Fakhar Zaman with Agha Salman though

Time for Agha in place of Usama.

Shadab v Nawaz still a toss up for me. Nawaz can bowl at 6 an over while Shadab can go at 8.
