Gary Kirsten speaking on the Wisden Cricket Patreon podcast:

"It was a tumultuous few months. I realised quite quickly I wasn’t going to have much of an influence. Once I was taken off selection and asked to take a team and not be able to shape the team, it became very difficult as a coach then to have any sort of positive influence on the group."

"If I got invited back to Pakistan tomorrow, I would go, but I would want to go for the players, and I would want to go under the right circumstances."

"Cricket teams need to be run by cricket people. When that’s not happening and when there’s a lot of noise from the outside that’s very influential noise, it’s very difficult for leaders within the team to walk a journey that you feel like you need to walk in order to take this team to where it needs to go.”

"I’m too old now to be dealing with other agendas, I just want to coach a cricket team, work with the players – I love the Pakistan players, they’re great guys. I had a very short period of time with them and I feel for them. More than any other team in the world, they feel the pressure of performance massively, when they lose it’s hectic for them and they feel that.”

"But they’re professional cricketers and I’m a professional cricket coach. When we get into that environment, there are generally certain things you do to help a team be the best that they can be, and when there’s no interference, you go down the road, and if it’s a talented group of guys, you’re generally going to have success."

Come back for which players?

Guys like Rizwan who will secretly try to oust you in the background for realising he is the issue?

Succiently summed up

I don’t buy that at all.

There is no coincidence Rizwan was appointed white ball captain the day after Gary left.
There was no contender either. The only option was to appoint Babar or Shaheen which no one would have accepted. The other option was Agha, but unfortunately didn't have enough performances to back up during that time.

So appointment of Rizwan was nothing more than a compulsion. Not to forget, the new interim coach was Aqib Javed, who has been very critical for Babar and Rizwan on national TV, yet was ok with Rizwan being captain. Moreover Glesspie too revealed how he was sacked from coaching role, blaming Aqib.

Said it then when it happened, will say it again now.

Aqib Javed had everything to do with Kirsten and Gillespie's sacking. And Naqvi was stupid enough to believe everything Aqib fed him. Aqib got his reality check in the Champions Trophy, but the fact that he has still managed to maintain key positions tells you how close he is with Naqvi.

These are things that are out in the open and patently obvious.

I can't believe they let Aqib Javed weasel his way into power over Kirsten.

Hopefully, they will learn their lesson and give Hesson enough time to do his work in white ball cricket.

PCB will say Kirsten violated his contract by coaching in Oman during the time period when he should have been in Pakistan spending time at the NCA, Academies and working with the Pakistani players in the off season.

Tbh Kirsten is a much better coach and tacticians for tests rather LOIs. And Gary needs to become more stern if he is to succeed in coaching a lazy bunch of players like ours. I don't see things getting better under Naqvi. The last 4 reigns have set Pak Cricket back by 10-15 years. (Ramiz-Sethi-Zaka-Naqvi)

Aqib and the chairman really went abit over board. Still they retained Aqib and gave im NCA coaching.

Genius. If you keep setting back it'll be 1992 soon!
