Imran Khan meets Donald Trump at the White House (July 2019)

week ahead of Pakistan Prime Minister Imran Khan's first official visit to Washington, his party has launched another attack on the press, linking critical coverage to potential "treason."

Khan, a cricket hero who captained Pakistan’s national team to a World Cup victory in 1992, was elected last summer after running a fiery campaign -- vowing to crack down on corruption and build an Islamic welfare state.

But, nearly one year later, his rule has been marred by a crackdown on civil rights activists, the rounding-up of opposition leaders, and increased pressure on the news media.

In the latest development, the official account of the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) party fired off over two dozen tweets in English and Urdu late Tuesday, lambasting the press for coverage criticizing the government and Khan which it deemed "Anti-State".

"Freedom of Expression is beauty of Democracy. Expressing Enemy's Stance is Not Freedom of speech but treason against its people," read one tweet.

"Media houses & journalists must take care that in their quest for criticism on State, they intentionally or unintentionally do not end up propagating enemy's stance," read another, with the hashtag: #JournalismNotAgenda.

Pakistan routinely ranks among the world's most dangerous countries for media workers, and reporters have frequently been detained, beaten and even killed for being critical of the government or powerful military.

In recent years the space for dissent has shrunk further, with the government announcing a crackdown on social networks and traditional media houses decrying pressure from authorities that they say has resulted in widespread self-censorship.

Khan will meet President Trump at the White House on July 22. While his supporters are planning to host a big event at DC's Capital One Arena, several anti-government protests are planned around town.

The PTM has been critical of Pakistan's powerful military establishment and accuses it of killing and abducting Pashtuns. There is a blackout of all PTM activities in Pakistani news media.

Khan's government is struggling to right the country's floundering economy, with ballooning deficits, soaring inflation, and a sinking rupee stirring discontent.

Media watchdog groups also have been vocal in criticism.

Reporters Without Borders recently warned of "disturbing dictatorial tendencies" after three Pakistani TV stations were briefly taken off air in what it called "brazen censorship."

The Committee to Protect Journalist last year warned that the powerful Pakistani military had "quietly, but effectively, set restrictions on reporting."

The government has defended its record, and last week Foreign Minister Shah Mehmood Qureshi told a media freedom conference in London that there was "no question of gagging" journalists after being challenged on his country's record.

Among other tweets, the PTI also warned that the media was a "powerful tool of depicting the positive image of our country. Anti-State actions not only impact the credibility of our journalism community but also sends out a wrong message to the world."

Pakistan PM to meet Trump hoping to mend fences, attract investment

ISLAMABAD, July 19 (Reuters) - Pakistani Prime Minister Imran Khan travels to the United States on Sunday hoping the arrest of a militant leader with a $10 million U.S. bounty on his head and progress in Afghan peace talks will help secure a favourable reception.

Khan is expected to try to mend fences and attract much needed investment during his meeting with U.S. President Donald Trump in exchange for assurances of full cooperation in ending the war in Afghanistan and fighting militant threats.

Trump, a property developer turned reality TV star, and Khan, World Cup-winning captain of the Pakistan cricket team, both came to office after achieving fame away from politics and the personal chemistry between the two may be decisive.

"A lot will depend on the kind of mood that President Trump and indeed Prime Minister Imran Khan find themselves in," said Farzana Sheikh, associate fellow at the Royal Institute of International Affairs in London.

"Neither of them is known to be particularly predictable."

Battling to stave off a balance of payments crisis and forced to seek a bailout from the International Monetary Fund, Pakistan is badly in need of foreign investment but security is likely to be the main focus of the visit.

Khan will be accompanied by the powerful army chief, General Qamar Javed Bajwa. Analysts believe he will play a key role in behind-the-scenes discussions where much of the serious business of the visit will take place, with the military looking to persuade Washington to restore aid and cooperation.

"It's a visit which is closely being monitored by the military which is in desperate need for money," said author and analyst Ayesha Siddiqa.

Last year, Trump cut off hundreds of millions of dollars in security assistance to Pakistan, accusing Islamabad of offering "nothing but lies and deceit" while giving safe haven to terrorists, a charge angrily rejected by Islamabad.

But Khan will believe the arrest on Wednesday of Hafiz Saeed, the alleged mastermind of a four-day militant attack on the Indian city of Mumbai in 2008, will send the right signals to Trump, who exuberantly welcomed the news on Twitter.

More than 160 people were killed in the four-day militant attacks. Saeed is designated a terrorist by the United States and the United Nations.

Trump said Saeed's arrest "after a 10-year search", was the result of pressure from his administration on Pakistan to get tougher on militants.

But Saeed has been in and out of Pakistan prisons for the last decade and even addressed public rallies.

As well as assurances that it is cracking down on militants, Khan is likely to stress Pakistan's role in bringing the Taliban to the negotiating table with the United States.

Trump has made no secret of his desire to end U.S. military involvement in Afghanistan and Pakistan's cooperation will be essential to any deal to end the war and ensure the country does not become a base for militant groups like Islamic State.

"The United States, Russia and China know that without Pakistan's co-operation, there can be no settlement in Afghanistan," Sheikh said.

India, which in February came close to war with Pakistan over the disputed region of Kashmir and which accuses Islamabad of supporting militants, will be watching the talks closely.

New Delhi has pushed the Financial Action Task Force, global money laundering and terror finance watchdog, to put Pakistan on a blacklist of countries that fail to meet international standards in stopping financial crime.

But it has had its own problems with the Trump administration over trade and is concerned about being shut out of the peace process in Afghanistan. (Writing by Saad Sayeed; Editing by Nick Macfie)

I see the anti IK and anti pakistan shills have started their nonsense before khans visit..these so called civil rights activists are known terrorist sympathisers..I would love to see what would happen to people like cyril almeida if they printed US state secrets in teh UK press..he would be extradited immediatley..look at what they did to Julian assange?

this is a concentrated campaign by the very forces that have tried to malign and destroy the very fabric of the country over the last ten years..

People who live in glass houses shouldn't throw stones...Slavery was permitted in Islam as well.

Permitted: Yes
Encouraged: No

The Prophet(PBUH) himself freed slaves. Hazrat Bilal being a good example of this.

Also, slavery had no racial component in Islamic Law.

Just read the above two posts and I am like what’s going on here.

Anyways, this trip is going to be funny. Can we trust IK to deliver a bigger blunder than Nawaz reading from a chit or Modi making a fool of himself by bear hugging a clearly bemused trump?

This would be an interesting trip . IK and Trump are alike in a lot of ways. I can see them being friends . If IK plays his cards right he can get a lot for Pakistan .

As expected these guys were quick to see Trump and criticise Pakistan before the visit of IK.

Trump has a vision to make America great again. As I said before, all of his policies will benefit America. That makes him a patriot for me. He does not have to go to Iraq and fight an unnecessary war to prove it.

You gotta be kidding me lol. If Trump is making America great again, then I have no idea what greatness stands for. He's a douche who has no sense of moral and intellectual grounds. He's the extreme opposite of a patriot. Guy openly calls people of color who are born in America to go back to "your country" His regular tweets are disgusting and comical. The claims that he makes of better economy and lower unemployment has been debunked as they were based on the policies of past administrators. If he wasn't for war then he would be calling his troops back, so don't be fooled by just starting up a war. fact. He isn't a peacemaker either and loves poking his nose where it doesn't belong. You seriously need to learn and review the meaning of a true patriot.

No coverage of the trip so far on American media. I know the trip hasn’t started yet but still there seems to be no pre-hype.

Can't wait for the press conferences and to see how IK deals with Trumps volatility. More than discussing the issues, it is more vital for the leaders to develop a personal rapport and connection, that will lead to frequent phonecalls, whatsapp messages, emails, letters and future meetings

What hype do you think there should be?
Lol. You're acting like we're a global superpower so there should be hype when we meet trump.
It's a routine appointment for trump and the us.

Trump is a total idiot that loves flattery- he loves good looking people especially alpha males. IK will have to play it smart because as you say he is volatile, and IK is not averse to telling the truth, which is one thing Trump doesn't like to hear. Either way its box office

Heard MBS had to intervene and get Kushner involved so that Trump agrees to meet IK.

What's the need for an army general to be there??

Can any PTI supporter explain why Gen. Bajwa is accompanying Imran?

Did the Indian Army Chief accompany Modi when he met Trump in 2017?

Are all head of states accompanied by their chiefs when they meet Trump?

Does Gen. Bajwa not trust Imran on matters of security?

Is this not enough proof for you to realize who holds the real power in the country?

Raheel Sharif also visited the U.S. only a month after Nawaz.

The military is a major stake holder in Afghanistan.

Clearly this meeting is about U.S. withdrawal from Afghanistan as much as it is about anything else.

Makes sense to have military chief and ISI chief with you dont you think?

Imran is a politician, but he wont be able to answer specific logistical or operation matters.

Bajwa and ISI chief will meet their counterparts in the U.S.

Not surprised at the lack of U.S. officials to receive Imran.

Nooners will claim this is because Imran is a weak PM.

It has more to do with the relationship between Pakistan and America. It has never been this low before.

It will take time to rebuild the relationship, which might not even happen as Pakistan is firmly in China's axis now.

WASHINGTON: As Prime Minister Imran Khan reached Washington on Saturday on a three-day, official working visit, a senior US administration official indicated that Washington may consider making some “changes to the suspension” of US security assistance to Pakistan if Islamabad readjusts some of its policies.

Briefing journalists on Prime Minister Imran Khan’s visit, the official also said that by extending an invitation to the Pakistani leader to visit the White House, the United States has sent a message to Islamabad that the “door is open to repairing relations” and building an enduring partnership.

“By and large that security assistance is still suspended,” said the official while responding to a question on the continued suspension of US security assistance to Pakistan. The Trump administration suspended security assistance to Pakistan in January 2018, and this marks the first time a US official has discussed the possibility — even though remote — of removing that suspension if Pakistan takes certain measures.

Official says Islamabad will have to ‘change its policies’ towards militancy and regional peace

“We will consider changing that suspension on certain items if Pakistan meets our security concerns both in Afghanistan, and with regard to some of the externally focus groups like Lashkar-e-Taiba and Jaish-e-Mohammed,” the official told reporters during a conference call.

But so far, there “has been no change to that suspension and security assistance,” the official added.

The official also said that to avail the opportunity for restoring a close relationship with Washington, Islamabad will have to “change its policies” towards terrorism and militancy.

PM Khan, who began his official engagements soon after his arrival, goes to the White House on July 22 for an extensive three-hour visit, which includes a one-on-one meeting with President Donald Trump and two meetings and a working lunch with the president’s team.

Besides President Trump, the US team will include Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin, Commerce Secretary Wilbur Ross, Energy Secretary Rick Perry, Acting Secretary of Defence Richard Spencer and Chairman of Joint Chief of Staff General Joseph Dunford.

The prime minister’s team will include Foreign Minister Shah Mehmood Qureshi, Army Chief Gen Qamar Javed Bajwa and other senior civil and military officials.

The senior Trump administration official said that President Trump will be most interested in encouraging Pakistan to assist in the Afghan peace process and he hopes that “the discussions will be productive”.

The White House also sees the visit as an opportunity to incentivise Pakistan to use its leverage on the Taliban to advance the Afghan peace process.

“We see that this visit could incentivise Pakistan to continue down the path that they have started. They’ve facilitated contacts to Taliban and met some of our requests with regards to the Afghan peace process,” the official said.

“We’re at a critical juncture and we need to see more cooperation from Pakistan. They need to use their full leverage in this endeavour. And so, we see this visit as an opportunity to encourage them to do more,” said the official.

Apparently, Afghanistan will be the main item on the US agenda and Washington seems clear that it needs Pakistan’s support to achieve this objective.

“We are calling on Pakistan for assistance in moving the peace process forward,” said the official, adding that the US “appreciates initial steps that Pakistan has taken to facilitate” the US-Taliban talks but at this “critical juncture in the peace process,” it needs more support.

“We are asking Pakistan to pressure the Taliban into a permanent ceasefire and participation in intra-Afghan negotiations that would include the Afghan government,” the official said.

The United States would also ask Pakistan to take irreversible action against terrorist and militant groups, and to facilitate peace talks with the Taliban for an intra-Afghan dialogue, the official added.

The Trump administration is making arrangements for a warm welcome to the prime minister, who will be the first Pakistani leader in four years to meet a US president when he visits the White House.

For the United States, the purpose of the visit “is to press for concrete cooperation from Pakistan to advance the Afghan peace process, and to encourage Pakistan to deepen and sustain its recent effort to crack down on terrorist and militants within its territory,” the official said.

But the official also said that the United States would not take “the initial steps” that Pakistan has so far taken at their “face value”.

“We are monitoring the situation. We will wait and see if the steps are made irreversible and sustainable,” the official said.

Discussions with Pakistan will also include potential cooperation on trade and energy and the White House will encourage Pakistan to “create” opportunity for enhancing regional economic development and connectivity, the official added.

The United States, the official added, would continue to “encourage Pakistan to ease restrictions on transit trade between India and Afghanistan”.

“We think this would be a very positive step and will demonstrate Pakistan’s commitment to a peaceful, prosperous South Asia.”

On all major issues, the civilian head can only function after he gets approval from the military supremo.

Good to see our neighbours and patwari biraadraan e millat on the same page.

Trump is mostly interested in withdrawal of American forces in Afghanistan, in fact he wouldn't even bother to meet if he didn't have this interest and obviously they would need military presence there (i won't be surprised if American military officials are also present at meeting).

Just a bit of bad news for patwaris and our neighbours that around 20,000 Pakistanis are going to welcome Imran Khan and watch him speak so your cheap shots mean nothing. You can keep sulking that Imran Khan is the man in control and if anything the Army generals can learn few things from him. None of these generals can match his charismatic personality, he has image of an honest fighter who depends on his character and dignity. Maryam and her illogical supporters are making it sound like Imran Khan knows NOTHING about anything and gets fed everything....yes this coming from Nawaz Sharif's party who is known for holding parchis even to greet head of states :))
One thing is for sure, Imran Khan won't be hugging Trump like a Koala unlike Modi.

Why not? Afghanistan will be the primary issue that the two countries will discuss and COAS needs to be. Stop overthinking everything.

Even the US Secretary of Defence Jim Mattis visited Pakistan back in September. What’s the big deal? The military has to be present in any discussions related to Afghanistan.

Not a PTI supporter but I agree, Gen Bajwa's presence there makes complete sense. Every head of state brings his experts when dealing with USA on such an important visits to make appropriate decision on a certain matters. I'm sure USA wanted Pak army chief's presence to make some concrete decision about withdrawal from Afghanistan and peace talk with Taliban. Better to be realistic than politically correct on the eyes of some IK bashers.

The US President, head of state, is the commander in chief of the US Military.

Let this sink in.

Paindu Nawaja supporters should watch this and cry.

In a meeting at the Embassy of Pakistan in Washington DC, Prime Minister Imran Khan invited businessmen and investors to benefit from economic and business opportunities in Pakistan.

The premier is on a three-day official working visit to the US.

The premier, who began his official engagements soon after his arrival in the US capital on Saturday, will go to the White House on July 22 for an extensive three-hour visit, which includes a one-on-one meeting with President Donald Trump, and two meetings and a working lunch with the president’s team.

PM Imran met with Tahir Javed, a Texas-based Pakistani businessman and a member of the Democratic Party, Javaid Anwar, a Pakistani American businessman, as well as a group of prospective investors.

According to a post shared by the government's official Twitter account, the premier invited the businessmen to "benefit from the economic and business opportunities afforded by Pakistan's strategic location and the connectivity to the broader region".

Additionally, the investors appreciated the improved security situation in Pakistan and identified areas of interest for investment in key sectors such as energy and tourism sectors.

PM welcomed to DC
Americans of Pakistani origin braved sweltering heat on Saturday to welcome the premier to Washington DC.

Hundreds of members of the community belonging to Washington metro area and other states came to the US capital and lined up along Massachusetts Avenue near Pakistan House, where the prime minister is staying during the visit.

"We are so excited that our leader is here. Pakistani-Americans are here to show their love for him," Johny Bashir, a Virginia-based PTI enthusiast said, as people waved the Pakistani and American flags to express their support for the visit.

"I am so happy as a Pakistani-American that PM [Imran] Khan is here.

"I am sure he will bridge disconnect between the two countries and bring them together in a strong bond of friendship," said Virginia-based Imran Butt.

Saadat Rana, a Woodbridge-based businessman, said the community is waiting anxiously to hear the premier address them at the Capital One Arena.

"We are so happy and believe that the visit will be historic in fostering close relations and creating understanding between [the] peoples of two countries," he said.

"We take pride in the fact that Pakistan has a dignified prime minister now. And the expatriate business community looks forward to investing in Pakistan," Imran Igra, a New York-based entrepreneur who drove to DC for the visit, said.

The gathered supporters changed slogans of 'Pakistan Zindabad'.

A rally of over 100 cars followed the prime minister from Dulles Airport to Washington DC to greet the leader.

PM Imran's itinerary
Earlier, Foreign Minister Shah Mahmood Qureshi, while discussing the prime minister's schedule, said Prime Minister Imran on Sunday will meet IMF chief David Lipton and his delegation and will later have a similar meeting with the World Bank president. Later in the evening, he will attend a community event at Washington’s Capital One Arena.

"We are expecting between 15,000 and 20,000 people," said the chief organiser of the event, Dr Abdullah Riar.

His other engagements include a meeting of Pakistani-Americans investors, media interviews, addressing the US-Pakistani Business Council and a dinner meeting with selected leaders of America’s corporate sector.

On Monday, the prime minister will arrive at the White House and after the book signing ceremony, he will attend two sessions: a small group meeting and an extended meeting. The first meeting will be in the Oval Office and the second in the cabinet room.

Prime Minister Imran will also have a one-on-one meeting with President Trump. The US leader will accompany him on a White House tour that will give them more time "to mingle and chat", the foreign minister said.

On July 23, US Secretary of State Michael Pompeo will call on the prime minister. Prime Minister Imran will also address a meeting at the US Institute of Peace and have lunch with newspaper editors. Later, he will go to Capitol Hill for a meeting with the Foreign Relations Committee of the Senate and later address the bipartisan Pakistani American Caucus. So far, 40-plus lawmakers have reportedly already signed up for this meeting.

PM Imran will also meet Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi before returning home on July 23.

Paindu Nawaja supporters should watch this and cry.

They will be too tired after doing dhamaals on baaji's vote ko izat do jalsa today in faislabad. One should ask her supporters why she was silent for 8 months before going nuts?

The US President, head of state, is the commander in chief of the US Military.

Let this sink in.

Now you are overdoing it Mamoon for once see it as a neutral observer after removing your Anti-IK glasses. Afghanistan/Taliban and American exit is going to be a major point in these talks so COAS need to be there.

Thanks guys this answers my question (post 100) and makes sense for Gen. Bajwa to be there.

Whenever the federal government is considered to be on the same page as the military, it actually means that the federal government is merging into the military page, thus making it even stronger.

Kaptaan traveled on a commercial airliner and was received by the fake Pir masquerading as a Foreign Minister. He was then taken to our embassy where a "dholak" was arranged by the buffalos auctioneer thanks to the the expat Pakistanis, i.e. the only people happy with him because they now get to spend more when they grace us with their presence in Pakistan.

On the contrary, the generals took a special flight and were received by officially by the Pentagon. It appears that they were in no mood for the dramay-baazi of boarding a commercial flight.

More importantly, the COAS will supervise the meeting of the two Trumps (and will provide the script to Imran), but when he will visit Pentagon later, Imran will be reduced to meeting some Pakistan delegations. A good way of keeping the government out of strategic decisions.

Sink in what?

That is exactly how it should be. This means that the only the President has the power to impose martial law, and the military will always be subservient to the elected government. The president holds the real power. In Pakistan, the President, the Prime Minister and the Minister of Defence is constitutionally superior to the COAS, but in truth, they are nothing but mere puppets. Pakistan belongs to its military, but it should be other way round.

Also heard for the first time state of Pakistan has hired a lobby firm. Before not the state but the individual looters would hire lobby firms to further their own personal interests.

But only a few weeks ago you were calling IK a fascist dictator, and today you are singing a different tune. Maybe you can make up your very confused mind.

I was wondering why there is no thread here on PP or discussion on Geo and Dawn and other channels about PPP+PMLN pathetic performance in FATA elections? There were elections on 16 seats and there is not a single seat where these 2 so called national parties are in top 3. Billo even had 3/4 jalsas for these elections still no fruits? Why this pathetic performance of these 2 parties is being ignored.

Can you paste the extract?

By early October, there were four outstanding issues: when would Musharraf shed his military uniform (before or after the elections); would Bhutto and her party colleagues be immunized in the multiple corruption cases against them (including the one against her husband); could she become prime minister despite a constitutional prohibition against a third term (she’d already had two terms); and finally, would Musharraf support her return to Pakistan before the elections?

I yet to see a single Noora discussion on the policy issues involved with these visits- its seems they are obsessed with who came to the airport and what clothes they were wearing.

Trump, Pakistani leader Imran Khan will try to ease volatile relations for peace in Afghanistan

President Trump has tweeted, as recently as this year, that the U.S. “foolishly” gave Pakistan tens of billions of dollars in aid over the decades, only to receive “lies & deceit” and failure to help fight terrorists in Afghanistan.

Prime Minister Imran Khan has called Mr. Trump’s criticisms of his country “ignorant and ungrateful” and complained repeatedly that Washington doesn’t appreciate Islamabad’s contribution to the war on terror.

But the mood and the conversation may be considerably warmer when Mr. Khan, a former cricket star, makes his first trip to the White House on Monday since his election 11 months ago. Oval Office talks with Mr. Trump are expected to center on the future of Afghanistan, counterterrorism, defense, energy and trade.

Pakistani Foreign Minister Shah Mahmood Qureshi, who will accompany Mr. Khan, told reporters in Islamabad that Pakistan sees the visit as a way to reset relations. The meeting itself is an “acknowledgment of the inherent importance” of better bilateral ties, he said.

The Khan government offered a pre-summit olive branch with the arrest Wednesday of Hafiz Saeed, a radical cleric and U.S.-wanted terrorist suspect implicated in the 2008 Mumbai attacks. Saeed was arrested in Punjab Province while traveling from Lahore to Gujranwala, Pakistani officials told The Associated Press.

Mr. Trump hailed the arrest on Twitter, but, like many other aspects of the U.S.-Pakistani relationship, it’s complicated. Saeed has been living openly in Lahore for years, preaching and even giving interviews to foreign media. U.S. and Indian officials have complained that Saeed has been detained repeatedly when Pakistan gives in to foreign pressure.

Analysts are not discounting the potential for surprises, and a discordant note or two, when Mr. Khan and Mr. Trump meet.

Moeed Yusuf, associate vice president of the Asia Center at the U.S. Institute of Peace, said the meeting is the least predictable in memory between leaders of the two countries, which are longtime wary partners in one of the world’s most volatile regions.

“Both individuals are very unconventional in how they approach diplomacy. Both like to not follow the bureaucratic script,” Mr. Yusuf said. “And, quite frankly, this is a relationship that has had so many ups and downs.”

A clash between the two countries came to a head last fall when Mr. Trump canceled $300 million in aid and tweeted that Pakistan would “take our money and do nothing for us.”
