Team India managed to level their three-match T20I series against South Africa in the final fixture, ending it at 1-1 on Thursday. Now in the ODI scheduled to begin today on Sunday, they will look to start on a winning note. KL Rahul will don the captain’s armband in the absence of regular skipper Rohit Sharma as India continue their tour of South Africa with the ODI series.

The last ODI the Men in Blue played was the ill-fated World Cup 2023 final against Australia which they lost in heartbreaking fashion after staying 10 games unbeaten. Even though it’s going to be pretty difficult to dust themselves off from the ground, India will still look to put on a brave face against the Proteas in the 1st ODI of the 3-match series.

A new-look Indian team will be going in for the kill on Sunday with fresh faces like Rinku Singh, Rajat Patidar and Sai Sudharsan hoping to make a good impression in the series with the 2025 Champions Trophy just over a year away.

India suffered another blow on Saturday when Mohammed Shami, one of their three pacers who lit up the World Cup had to withdraw due to injury. With Deepak Chahar also out of the ODI series after sitting out the T20I one, all eyes will be on Avesh Khan, Mukesh Kumar, and Arshdeep Singh to slot in alongside Jasprit Bumrah and Mohammed Siraj in the lineup.

South Africa had a horrendous start but they have stabilized a bit now.
42/2 after 7.2 overs now

Arshdeep has thrashed the batting line-up of SA with his 4th wicket. SOuth Africa is 57/6 now.

Why was Arshdeep dropped for the WC?
He could have complemented Shami, Siraj and Burmah quite nicely in a few games.

4 wickets each for Arshdepp and Avesh khan so far. South Africa is 77/8.
What a dominating display of bowling from Indian bowlers.

Look at the crowd for this ODI. That too just after a World Cup

This format is far from dead.

On the other hand , Perth attendances were poor for a nation where, supposedly , Test cricket is the pinnacle of the sport.

We need more ODIs with context and fewer Test matches..

The India-SA Tests will hardly be attended in comparison except maybe for the Boxing Day tradition.

Sensational bowling performance from India

South Africa bowled out for 116 in 27.3 overs.

No matter which team they field. India continues bowling out oppositions for low scores. Although they freeze in important matches, it is not a reflection of quality. More a reflection of mental scars. So it is good to see bench strength doing well.

Will be unwise to overstate the bowling performance from India today. It was a mix of conditions and frenetic approach from the Saffer batters that undid them. The bowling attack fielded by India is barely serviceable.

Yep. The moisture in the pitch is what has allowed this bowling performance. Wickets have come from every part of the pitch.

Little to do with the bowlers' skills

Until you get rid of players like sky rahul and even kohli who poop their pants in big games india won't win finals or even semis at times.

Also kuldeep is poor under pressure. When you get rid of these non clutch players and select clutch players you will win.

Reminds me of those nz green seamers I used to see in early 2000 simon doull bond wreaked havoc.

South Africa Vs India ODI Series

First ODI

South Africa: 116/10 (27.3)

India: 117/2 (16.4)

India win by 8 wickets

Good win.

I see South Africa didn't play Rabada, Ngidi, and Jansen.

India are also resting some of the main players.

Both sides seem to be experimenting/giving rests to main players.

Both teams were rested main Playes becouse much important test series is coming so they are preparing for test series

That's a good strategy.

This ODI series has no meaning. It is not even a part of any Super League (like last time).

Test series is part of the WTC.

IND Vs RSA, 1st ODI Match Report: India Thrash South Africa By 8 Wickets, Lead Series 1-0

Pacer Arshdeep Singh bowled a dream first spell and found an ally in equally menacing Avesh Khan as a second-string Indian team annihilated South Africa by eight wickets in the opening ODI in Johannesburg on Sunday.

India now lead the three-match series 1-0.

Having gone into the match without a single wicket in his previous three ODI appearances, Arshdeep more than made up for it with his maiden five-wicket haul as South Africa were all out for 116 in 27.3 overs. The target was surpassed in only 16.4 overs.

Playing their first 50-over game post the World Cup final, it seemed that Arshdeep (5/37 in 10 overs) and Avesh (4/27 in 8 overs) had picked up a cue from their seniors Mohammed Shami and Jasprit Bumrah as quality Proteas batting line-up was made to look like novices on a track that offered a lot of help due to underlying moisture.

In reply, debutant B Sai Sudharsan (55 not out off 43 balls) showed during his stay at the wicket why he is rated so highly. He made the chase look like a cakewalk.

The sinewy southpaw looked elegant and upright while driving on the up and looked strong off the back foot while pulling the short ball. Against spinners, he put a big stride forward, which is the hallmark of a good player. The on-drive off Tabraiz Shamsi was a treat for the eyes.

Sai had seasoned Shreyas Iyer (52 off 45 balls) for company, who looked in fine touch, something that augurs well for India, ahead of the upcoming Test series.
However, the story of the day was how Indian pacers rattled South Africa with the ball jagging around for the first hour and a half which spelled doom for the home side.

Arshdeep would certainly feel good having drawn a lot of flak for his inconsistency in the shortest format.

In their last encounter at Kolkata's Eden Gardens, South Africa were bowled out for 83 under lights on a slow deck but never would have Aiden Markram thought that he and his men would be bullied at the 'Bull Ring' which has been a haven for them in white ball cricket.

Only three players who played the World Cup final -- skipper KL Rahul, wrist spinner Kuldeep Yadav and middle-order batter Shreyas Iyer -- are a part of this current playing eleven, and India's backup pacers gave a good account of themselves.

The two Indian pacers pitched it up and ensured that most of the South African batters stayed rooted to the crease. Both were on hat-tricks with dismissals off successive deliveries.

Arshdeep would get more credit as he blew away the top-order within the first Powerplay with four wickets and then left it to Avesh, who bowled fast and full, hurrying the batters for pace.

In between, Avesh would slip in the occasional short ball for the tailenders, who were in two minds whether to go on the front foot or back foot.

It started with Reeza Hendricks (0), who dragged a delivery that was angled across the right-hander back onto the stumps and the dangerous Rassie van der Dussen (0) must have expected an away-going one but got one that darted back from the middle stump.

Tony de Zorzi (28 off 22 balls) chanced his arms and Mukesh Kumar (0/46 in 7 overs), who had an off-day, went for a few before Arshdeep showed his variation by digging one short and the ball ballooned for skipper Rahul to complete an easy catch.

However, the wicket that completely broke the home team's back was Heinrich Klaasen's (6) dismissal, which would have even made the great Wasim Akram proud.

Arshdeep bowled one slightly back of length but flicked his wrists in a manner that it turned into a vicious in-dipper which clipped the leg stump bail, leaving the right-hander in a complete daze.

The end of Powerplay didn't end Proteas' woes as skipper Markram played on, completely beaten for pace. David Miller (2) also fell prey to relentless pressure to a delivery pitched on drivable length while Wiaan Mulder and Keshav Maharaj found the speed of deliveries too hot to handle.

It was Andile Phehlukwayo, whose 33 coming in at No. 8, took the home team past the 100-run mark before Arshdeep, in his second spell, completed his coveted five-for.

Wow didn't even know there was an odi series after the T20s..klrahul as captain? Lol - that's rewarding mediocrity and tuk tuk batting. He is useless in pressure games and he's been made captain. Shreyas iyer could have been made the odi captain for this series..

'I can't accept this...it's nonsense': Pollock, Gavaskar lambast South Africa's horror batting show vs IND

To say South Africa were hammered would be an understatement of what unfolded in Johannesburg on Sunday evening in the opening ODI game of the three-match series. South Africa had more of their white-ball regulars than India, who were without the likes of Virat Kohli, Rohit Sharma, Jasprit Bumrah, Mohammed Shami, and Ravindra Jadeja. But that was just on paper. In the game, India were supreme, while South Africa never even arrived. They won the toss, opted to bat and then in a blink of an eye were folded for just 116 runs in 27.3 overs, courtesy of Arshdeep Singh's maiden five-wicket haul and Avesh Khan's four-fer.

India could have started the match with a wicket for Arshdeep in the very first ball but did not go for a review against Reeza Hendricks. And it hardly mattered as he dismissed the opener and Rassie van der Dussen off back-to-back deliveries, both for a duck. Tony de Zorzi then became the left-armer's third victim while Arshdeep single-handedly reduced the hosts to four down with the wicket of Heinrich Klaasen in the final ball of the powerplay.

Furious at South Africa's horror show in the opening game, former captain Shaun Pollock launched an attack questioning the need for a modern-day approach of an attacking brand of cricket when the team is losing wickets at regular intervals. Calling it "nonsense" and unacceptable, he cited the example of David Miller, who scored a century recently in the ODI World Cup, but lost his wicket to a needless cover drive when he could have stuck around for at least 10 overs.

"Try and work their way out of the situation and get themselves into trouble and get bowled up very cheaply. And you can't do that. I mean, I can't accept that. The modern player will say, oh, you've got to be positive, all that nonsense. I can't accept that as a former South African, that always when you get put into pressure, you just fall down," he told Star Sports after South Africa's eight-wicket loss. "For all honesty, what you could have been done there today is you could have just blocked out ten overs. You couldn't have scored a run for ten overs just to absorb some pressure and then you could have continued to bat and they would have posted 200 and something on the board. So, I mean, if you look at the class of...for example, David Miller, I mean, he walks to the crease, they're in trouble. He got a 100 in the World Cup semifinal in the same situation, but today he walks to the crease. He tries to execute a booming cover drive on the up and nicks off when his team needed him just to be there for a period of time.
