India (150 & 487/6d) beat Australia (104 & 238) by 295 runs in the 1st Test of Border-Gavaskar Trophy 2024-25

The lack of rotation by Australia is a bit mystifying. There was talk of some worthy players during the Ashes, Neser iirc , they declined and it backfired.

Boland has had his fun .

Spencer Johnson, though taw, could cause havoc on this type of pitch. Day 1 anyway

If these two openers add 83 more runs for the first wicket partnership....... then the opening partnership will be more than the two first innings totals combined!!!

India: 150
Aus: 104
Total: 254

Partnership is already 172 ..... 83 more runs, and opening stand will be of 255 runs.
Amazing turn of events!

I don't think, this has ever happened in the history of test cricket.

Simply great batting by two openers here. Proper test class batting. Aus pacers will get tired. I thought it won't be the case after Pujara retired, but these two openers are batting time as well.

This was desperately needed. Jaiswal after started playing T20 became more and more impatient A guy who was known for incredibel temperament started picking up bad habits going after balls that are not to be hit.

I think NZ series loss at home was a blessing and good wakeup call...! It shook them and they came up with a a spirited performance! If one home series loss can do this, then we will take it (bored of so much home dominance :) )

Especially the batting in 2nd innings... I told on the 1st day itself, how India bowls in Aus 1st innings and how they bat in 2nd innings will set the tone for this series... I am glad that they did just that...

A closer look at how the pitch has changed over the two days showcased the drastic change it underwent in merely a day of chaotic play.

Day 1 proved to be a pacer’s dream, with plenty of grass offering bounce and movement for the bowlers to have their hearts’s fill, while the pitch on Day 2 started showing signs of deterioration, seemingly favouring out the batters more.

Yah, it won't be easy for Indian bowlers as well, but India will have a huge lead here.

As per commies, normally cracks will appear on 4th day onwards as in the case of last test match against pak .so india have to bat till late tea tomorrow to eat out any batting advantage of Aussies.

Dukes ball. Different. In nz it's kookaburra ball.

Duke ball gets harder to play when it's older.

Duke's in England assist when the lacquer comes off, which is around 10th over mark, and then can assist throughout the shelf life.

That would mean Aus pacers would have bowled 6 sessions with small break. Thankfully, there is a big gap between tests.

There is time and if India can bat entire day then it will be worse for Aus. It's tiring to be on field for 3-4 days.

With brittle batting, India could have been easily 4-5 down if openers had departed early. So credit to them.

A few balls kept low today , if 172/0 goes to 350+ , Aussies are done & dusted . Having said that , seam movement was 40% less compared to day 1 . Wish Ashwin was playing in place of Washi !

That's a clear indication of excessive moisture during day 1, hence, nonone had a clue.

Day 2 is showing moisture has gone hence little seam movement, but india had to show application and skill to bat well

In nz Sachin has failed plenty of times.

Cause of issues with swing. First 20 30 overs vs kookaburra ball is really hard.

He often never lasted when it was seaming there.

Pitch is going to be deterious fast from day 3 .it won't be so easy for batters also, we will see more uneven bounce from tomorrow

In the last series down under too same thing happened.Langer admitted their bowlers got tired after using the same set for entire series. So india should try to eat time and score runs from strategic point of view.Jaiswal have the hunger to score daddy hundreds .so he is the idlea case to do it.tomorrow's first hour will be the telling tale.

This means there is moisture under the surface and hence the grass looks green and fresh... This is required to make sure that the pitch plays well for all 4 innings / all 5 days... If they start with like on the right (brown without any grass), then chances of pitch breaking up on 3rd / 4th day itself with some cracks & footmarks will be more... This makes batting too tough (and even more dangerous than green pitch - with uneven bounce & ball shooting up from cracks)...

Still this pitch can offer uneven bounce on 4th & 5th day (to lesser extent), so toss plays some role only... Australia after bowling well in the 1st innings should have batted well (like how India is batting now), then it would have meant that they took advantage of the fresh/green pitch. Their batsmen should have applied and stayed at the wicket (at least 80/2 by the end of yesterday), then they would have gotten a substaintial 1st innings lead today...

The pitches are alright, if both teams play properly then the match will definitely go into the 5th day like it happened last time in Gabba & Sydney tests... I am only doubtful of Pink Ball D/N Tests, because it is a kind of lottery with seamers taking advantage of peculiar sessions (twilight time)...

Lol. You are trying to compare deficiencies of hacks to one of the GOATS. have a good day.

Old WACA is known for formation of devots (indentation) as the match goes on you will start seeing huge cracks. They are using the same clay here. Hope the deterioration is similar as well with sun baking the pitch.

I am not comparing. I am saying it's normal to fail. Young players will fail often in tough conditions.

So it's ok considering even greats have failed. Like Sachin.

They will get better over time. That was my point. Facing swing against high quality attack is extremely difficult.

‘Unacceptable’: Aussies slammed for body language in field as McDonald defends missing bowling coach

Perth: Australia’s vaunted bowling cartel received a rude shock and harsh reality check on a contrasting day of cricket at Perth Stadium that belonged to rising star Yashasvi Jaiswal as the home side was accused of “unacceptable” body language in the field.

Australian head coach Andrew McDonald was forced to defend the team’s decision to let bowling coach Daniel Vettori miss the opening Test of the summer and travel to Saudi Arabia for the Indian Premier League auction after a sobering and wicketless stint in the field.

Indian openers Jaiswal and KL Rahul nullified Australia’s fired-up bowlers and helped build an important and morale-boosting lead on day two of the first Test of the Border-Gavaskar Trophy in Perth.
After a chaotic opening day where 17 wickets fell in just 76.4 overs of play, Australia lost three wickets in the two hours before lunch to be all out for 104, still 46 runs shy of India’s modest total of 150.

In need of quick wickets, Australia were flat and inaccurate with the ball as Jaiswal (90) and Rahul (62) rammed home their side’s advantage by reaching stumps at 0-172 with a 218-run lead.

Frontline bowlers Pat Cummins, Mitch Starc, Josh Hazlewood and Nathan Lyon all went wicketless across 57 draining overs in the field, which prompted former Test opener Greg Blewett to slam the team’s body language while in commentary for Seven.

“Well, I have been critical of it for a while,” Blewett said. “That hour leading into tea I just thought they looked like they were going through the motions. It’s unacceptable really. It’s day two of an important series [between] Australia and India.”

Asked whether he thought Blewett had a point, McDonald replied: “Didn’t notice the body language at all.”

Former Australian bowler Damien Fleming said on SEN the home side were finding themselves on the end of an “absolute thrashing”.

The Australian coach was also asked about the absence of Vettori, who is overseas about to take part in the IPL auction as head coach of Sunrisers Hyderabad, and whether his presence would have made a difference.

CA’s national development coach Lachlan Stevens is in Perth as extra support for the team.

“He [Vettori] is still connected with us. A lot of pre-planning, prep work gone in. The answer is no [it didn’t make a difference], he’s got some commitments elsewhere,” McDonald said.

“I think the wicket’s changed considerably. The seam and swing was down compared to yesterday. I thought KL and Jaiswal played extremely well.

“The morale is always good. It’s a pretty level team. We’ve got some problems to solve. There’s no doubt we’re clearly well behind the game at this stage. India are in the driver’s seat.”

Jaiswal and Rahul showed excellent application, having come off respective scores of zero and 26 in the first innings.

Jaiswal, who has shown great promise in his short career, grew with confidence every over as Australia’s quicks failed to make inroads with the new ball. So too did part-timer Marnus Labuschagne, who resorted to sending down bouncers at speeds of up to 135km/h.

Had Australia’s top order given a better account of themselves on Friday night, the home side could have taken a first-innings advantage but will now be chasing a game that slowed down significantly once players adjusted to the bouncy Perth surface.

It was only the sixth time an Indian opening batting pair has produced a triple-figure partnership against Australia in Australia. The record stands at 191 from Sunil Gavaskar and Kris Srikkanth in 1986.

In terms of all touring teams, not since Andrew Strauss and Alistair Cook in 2010 at the Gabba (188 runs) has an opening pair contributed more for the first wicket.

Earlier, India captain Jasprit Bumrah took the prized wicket of Alex Carey with his first ball of the day, but a rearguard 10th-wicket partnership between Starc and Hazlewood frustrated the tourists’ attempts to clean up Australia’s tail.
Australia avoided further humiliation by going past their lowest total against India (83 in 1981) and bringing up triple figures, to the relief of the local crowd hoping this match continues until at least the end of the weekend.
In home Tests, Australia have been bowled out for fewer than 104 runs on just 11 occasions. The last time that happened was in 2016, when Australia were skittled for 85 in Hobart.
Bumrah, who took four wickets on Friday during a scintillating pace-bowling performance, struck immediately by removing Carey for 21, caught behind by wicketkeeper Rishabh Pant.

It was a delivery at which Carey did not need to play, but his score was nearly double that of Australia’s next best in Travis Head (11). The tentative shot indicated that Carey was more worried about the bowler and not playing it on its merits.

The dismissal brought up Bumrah’s second five-wicket haul or better against Australia, having taken 6-33 in the 2018 Boxing Day Test.

They were missing their bowling coach! Who by the way is a spinner. I'm not having this.

But what i would say is why on earth hold a IPL Auction during a Test Match which could beca possible head spinner.

Do they need a bowling coach at a venue they have a 100% win record in 4 matches?

Starc 358 wickets
Hazlewood 273 wickets
Cummins 269 wickets
Lyon 530 wickets

Regading IPL auction that is about to happen on sunday only Starc will be the interested party. May be Marsh. Others were either picked already or not playing this test.

What has a league auction got to do with a Test match?

Aussies to win by an innings but not sure about The Apposition except india :kp

What is happening in this Test is an anomaly.

Aussies are #1 in ICC Test ranking (13 points ahead of 2nd positioned India). They also hold the WTC. They are the best Test team currently even if they lose this game.

Winning the four successive series against australia at home or away is not an anomaly but winning a one off game is called anomaly.

You need a ball that goes other way. Only Ashwin is capable of bowling that ball. Neither Sundar nor Jadeja can bowl doosra type deliveries. At best they can straighten it.

what are you talking about ?
1 win > 4 wins.
this is real analysis. he used topological properties of real numbers to arrive at that conclusion.

This is already a historic opening stand. I guess that’s too much to ask. They’ve done more than what was asked from them actually.
Hopefully the other batters can add at least 150 runs tomorrow

Someone was saying that the delivery on which Kohli was dismissed in the first innings was a jaffa.

Except that it wasn't. Such deliveries are commonplace on such pitches but Kohli is so hopelessly past it that it looked like a jaffa to his diehard fans

We are not yet out of woods in this test. A score of 0/172 can so easily proceed to 210 all out especially knowing our propensity to self destruct in past few years.

Need a minimum of 250 more runs to feel a bit secure.

STARC TO RANA: "I bowl faster than you."

JAISWAL to STARC: "It's Coming too slow"

:kp

Don't know why Aussies always try to intimidate India with their pace. Indian batters never had any issue facing even express pace and it's even more the case with our modern day batters..

Remember them hyping up Shaun Tait in Perth 2008 and how he's gonna blow away India with his wild pace, but he ended up with match figures that looked something like 0/110 in 25 overs and India ended up winning. :ROFLMAO:

23 overs till the new ball which can be doubly dangerous. Gotta make full use of these 23 overs and get the lead over 300

India needs to put up a 500 lead and put this game away for good.

Only two results possible are India win or a draw (doubt it with Australia's batting form).

Rahul is playing a career saving innings here.

Hope he can carry on. I still have some hope for him that he can turn around his career.

Pitch is nice and flat. Sun is beating down on the ground.
It is India’s game to lose from here.

The stage is perfectly set for Kohli to score some good runs and contribute to the lead.

Rahul needs to talk with jaiswal after every delivery. Jaiswal is nervous to score his first century in australia .

100 for Yashu.

What a moment for him. A 100 in his first test in Australia after a duck in the first innings.👍

The stage was set for him so many times over last few years but he hardly looked to cash those chances.

Hope I'm proved wrong this time.

What a way to get your first ton in Australia especially against their most miserly bowler!

With players like Jaiswal, I think Indian cricket's future is in safe hands.

Imagine playing his first test match in Australia, got out on a duck in the first innings but still went on to score a hundred. Yashasvi Jaiswal will never forget this knock. Generational telent .

Starc gets Rahul very lucky he was bowling hit me balls all spell

Unlucky good innings by Rahul

Floodgates can open now.

Well played KL. Absolutely fantastic knock

Has the pitch quickened a bit or is it just Starc bowling fast? The ball is fizzing past the bat to the keeper.
