Under a new captain and coach, India signaled the dawn of a new era going 1-0 up in the three-match T20I series and will be looking to take an unassailable lead when they face New Zealand in the second match on Friday, 19 November in Ranchi.

Overview

India vs New Zealand, 2nd T20I
JSCA International Stadium Complex, Ranchi
19 November, 7pm local time

While a win did not come easy for India in the first match, they will be backing their chances of sealing the series in the second T20I. Keeping the heartbreak of an early exit from the ICC Men's T20 World Cup aside, they will be backing a young Indian side to deliver in the final two T20Is.

Under Rohit Sharma's strong leadership, India ended a seven-match losing streak against New Zealand across formats. With several young and upcoming players on the bench, the hosts will be looking to make the most of this opportunity and give them a chance to shine, considering the next T20 World Cup is less than a year away.

New Zealand might be missing the services of regular captain Kane Williamson, but they are fielding their usual side and would want to quickly shrug off the disappointment of their last two matches. Their batting is firing but the middle-order needs to step up. The visitors would be looking to work on their consistency and ironing out the few chinks in the upcoming matches.

Remember the last time:

It was a dramatic win for new India as they held their nerve in the final over to register a five-wicket victory over New Zealand in the first T20I. New Zealand, who were asked to bat first, put up 164/6, thanks to a stunning 42-ball 70 from Martin Guptill. He was ably assisted by Mark Chapman, who made a half-century of his own. After Guptill-Chapman's century-stand, the visitors faltered towards the end, probably 20 short of what they were expecting.

In reply, India cruised in the initial overs, registering half-century stands for the first and second wicket. New Zealand, however, fought back with Suryakumar's wicket in the 17th over and turned the screws on the hosts, giving away just 11 runs in the next 2.2 overs to bring the equation down to 10 off the last over. Despite Daryl Mitchell snaring a wicket, a couple of fours sealed the deal for India.

What they said:

Rohit Sharma, India captain (after the first T20I win): "As a team we are happy that the guys got to bat in that situation and finished the game off. Technically was a good game, (we were) missing a few players and to come and see what the new players have in terms of ability and I think the way we pulled it back in the last 3-4 overs was magnificent."

Tim Southee, New Zealand skipper (after the first T20I defeat): "You always want to come out on the right side of the result. We played our best cricket and took it deep. Mark Chapman hasn't played a lot of cricket of late, and to play the way he played was very pleasing to the side. It was a game of fine margins."

Squads:

India Squad: KL Rahul, Rohit Sharma(c), Suryakumar Yadav, Rishabh Pant(w), Shreyas Iyer, Venkatesh Iyer, Axar Patel, Ravichandran Ashwin, Bhuvneshwar Kumar, Deepak Chahar, Mohammed Siraj, Yuzvendra Chahal, Harshal Patel, Avesh Khan, Ishan Kishan, Ruturaj Gaikwad

New Zealand Squad: Martin Guptill, Daryl Mitchell, Mark Chapman, Glenn Phillips, Tim Seifert(w), Rachin Ravindra, Mitchell Santner, Tim Southee(c), Todd Astle, Lockie Ferguson, Trent Boult, Adam Milne, Ish Sodhi, James Neesham

Virat Kohli's elite record in T20I cricket can very well be broken when India host New Zealand in the 2nd T20I of the three-match series in Ranchi today (November 19). With 3217 runs, NZ opener Martin Guptill presently sits at the 2nd spot on the list of highest run-getters in the shortest format at the highest level.

Kohli has 3227 runs in 95 T20Is and only holds a 10-run lead over the senior batsman. Should Guptill score 11 runs in the remainder of the series, he will pip Kohli to become the highest run-scorer in the shortest format. Kohli isn't part of the ongoing series.

Guptill's tally includes 2 centuries and 19 half-centuries. Kohli has yet to score a century but has recorded 29 half-centuries.

Rohit Sharma, the newly-appointed T20I skipper, sits at the third spot with 3086 runs. The opening batsman will have to end his century drought in order to hold an outside chance of leapfrogging both Guptill and Kohli. Rohit, who has 4 T20I centuries, hasn't breached the three-figure mark in this format since 2018.

Both Rohit and Guptill have held the top spot on the elite list in past. Both the batsmen were at the top in different months in 2018. They were pipped by Kohli, who continues to hold the spot, in 2019.

Australia's white-ball skipper Aaron Finch (2608 runs) and Ireland's Paul Stirling (2570 runs) sit at the 4th and 5th spots, respectively.

Talking of the ongoing three-match series, the Men in Blue hold a 1-0 lead and a win in Ranchi will see them register another series win over the Black Caps. India have been the dominant force against NZ in bilateral series and have defeated them in 2 out of the past 3 series.

Both the teams are unlikely to change their respective playing XIs for the all-important fixture, which kicks at 7:00 PM IST.

Positive start by the tourists.

Lol at two trundlers starting for India. What kind of selection is this?

Bhuvi must leave. Start with Siraj and Deepak Chahar and pick a death over specialist or someone who does both like Avesh Khan.

Siraj is injured. Harshal Patel is top wicket taker in IPL 2021. They gotta try him somewhere.

Another trundler yet to come - Harshal Patel

Guys like Harshal Patel should be backed at the right time (when they are in form).

Only if Harshal Patel was there in T20 world cup. This is what happens when you dont pick the team based on IPL stats. Harshal Patel was purple cap holder and should have been in the team.

Rahul looks so damn good when in the zone. Problem with him is his consistency and failure to deliver in big games.

To win against India in India you need to get wickets , Ashwin batting at number 8 shows deep batting

The question is can you drop him whether or not he does bad in big games . No selector can drop Rahul , sharma or kohli , no matter how much they score

They are our best batsman...so no question of dropping them from all 3 formats. Rest of the batting line up is just hype, especially now that Dhawan is gone.

Rahul is a bilateral bully.

I rate him in Tests only.

Don't care about this useless T20 and ODI. Just win a test series in South Africa ( next month) and NZ ( early next year ) to be considered one of the greatest Test side ever.

The issue is that unless you drop some players you cannot have a look at new players , this is the dilema Indian selectors will have to deal with.

India has always been good at bilaterals and home series. But the lack of a ICC trophy is glaring.

Need to win at least one of the 2022 T20 WC and 2023 WC

Home series? Did you not see our performance in Australia and England test series? They were more precious and tougher than ICC trophy.

Rahul is a mental midget. Slightest pressure he will catch cold feet. I mean in Tests he has played some good knocks under pressure. But in LOIs he fails in the most important matches. Hope he fixes that.

2nd T20I • New Zealand tour of India, 2021

IND 155/3 (17.2)

NZ 153/6 (20)

India won by 7 wkts

India are looking good to complete a whitewash.

Kiwis are missing Williamson badly.

Atleast Kiwis didn’t suddenly start dropping catches , fielding miserably and then not reviewing not being caught.

Boult dropped one that you would normally expect him to take from Hitman. Though the issue was the batting which seemed suspect and NZ were never gonna defend 150.

Nahh not really. Indians have won a 60 over WC, 50 over WC and a 20 over WC. Their legacy is stamped...

India clinch the series with an unassailable lead of 2-0 after a seven-wicket win against New Zealand powered by half-centuries from KL Rahul and Rohit Sharma.

Chasing 154 for a series win, India cruised along with the help of a 117-run opening stand between KL Rahul and Rohit Sharma.

Despite Tim Southee's attempt to rescue New Zealand with the ball, the total fell below par to make a match out of it in tough bowling conditions.

Earlier, New Zealand started their innings with a flier, however, India bowlers at the death restored parity to restrict the visitors within achievable limits.

Lethal opening pair

New Zealand were put in to bat, and the opening pair of Martin Guptill and Daryl Mitchell ensured they were on track to post a competitive target with conditions suggesting heavy dew in Ranchi.

Bhuvneshwar Kumar - bowling the first over - was taken apart by Guptill for 14. India did get an opportunity within the first over as Rahul ran back from mid-off in an attempt to send Guptill packing, but spilling out of his hands.

With difficulty in gripping the ball making life tougher for the bowlers, New Zealand openers made the most of it with a 48-run opening stand. Guptill batted clinically for his 15-ball 31, clattering 3 fours and 2 sixes before Deepak Chahar snared his wicket in the fifth over.

The blow did not cap the scoring rate as much as India would have hoped for. The visitors finished the Powerplay with 64/1 as the in-form Mark Chapman joined Mitchell on the crease to keep the board ticking.

Ashwin, Axar steer India to safe waters

Ravichandran Ashwin and Axar Patel bowled in tandem during the middle overs. In the second over of his spell, Axar got hold of Chapman's wicket who walked back looking to clear the long-off but found KL Rahul who swallowed the catch.

Mitchell's stay at the crease was brought to an end by debutant Harshal Patel who got his man with a well-disguised cutter - Mitchell heaved it long-on where Suryakumar Yadav completed the catch.

Glenn Phillips and Tim Seifert undertook the rebuilding but as the scoreboard pressure mounted, Seifert succumbed to Ashwin after the reverse sweep didn't go according to plan.

At the fifteen over mark, New Zealand had the platform set for a big finish with 125 runs and seven wickets intact. However, a masterful display of death bowling architected by Patel, Kumar and Chahar allowed only 28 runs in the final five.

Phillips' cameo of 34 off 21 balls came to end after he holed out to deep square leg off Patel's bowling. With runs hard to come by for James Neesham, Kumar's economical over yielded the wicket in the final ball of his spell -- edge and caught by Rishabh Pant.

The final 23 balls of New Zealand innings saw zero boundaries. The tremors were evidently felt on the final score -- New Zealand finishing with 153/6.

The India openers meant business when they set up an opening stand of 117 runs. Rahul led the assault with a 49-ball 65 but it was Rohit in the tenth over who pivoted the impetus in India's favour. Rohit walloped a couple of sixes off Mitchell Santner's bowling - one over mid-wicket and another across wide long-on.

Rahul carried forward the momentum to up the ante with a floury of boundaries against Adam Milne and Trent Boult in subsequent overs.

Southee rebels but Pant takes India home

New Zealand captain returned with a stand out performance of 3/16, snaring the all-important wickets of Rahul, Rohit and Suryakumar Yadav.

Rahul attempted to take Southee down but the deception of pace employed by the bowler meant the ball fell short of the boundary into the hands of the fielder at deep square leg.

Southee then picked Rohit with a slower bouncer who departed for 55 runs off 36 deliveries and Suryakumar (1) in the space of three deliveries.

However, Venkatesh Iyer and Rishabh Pant took India over the finish line with seven wickets in hand and 16 balls to spare, courtesy of back-to-back sixes from Pant.

The sides will play each other in Kolkata in the third and final T20I of the series on 21 November.

Revenge completed. Fans in general are now satisfied. All hail India.

All of us saw the gold standard of IPL and their online cheerleaders during the T20 World Cup 2021. :inti

Actually players who performed well in IPL were not picked in T20 world cup. This was one of the main reason we didnt do well. Harshal Patel and Yuzi Chahal were IPLs best bowlers (from India) but both got dropped from world cup squad. They picked Rahul Chahar whom even Mumbai Indians dropped and out of form Bhuvneshwar Kumar.

Had we picked the team based on IPL performance we would have fared much better.

Paytm trophy winners are back to their best only to choke in crucial matches of ICC events..
No one takes these meaningless t20i bilaterals seriously.

Don't rate the Indian LOI team. The test team is excellent though, having won the series twice in Australia and are 2-1 ahead in England and also beating everyone at home.

Lets be honest even if india had performed well or even won world cup, the usual arguments would be Ofcourse they have to do well because of playing ipl in uae, because of billion population, because of rich board they might have bought few teams ..

So as a Indian fan never expect opposition Asian fans to given any credit irrespective of win or loss lol
As a true Indian fan accept team did bad last time and give full support irrespective of format. Cheers
